    I work with elevators all the time, I can pretty much tell you what happened here.
    The kid held the door open for so long that it "timed out". Meaning it was gonna close and reset "no matter what was blocking it".
    After closing the elevator would do 1 of 3 things:
    - stop at the midway point between the highest and lowest floors
    - go to the main lobby
    - sit there until it figured out what floor it was on.
    That elevator didn't drop. Speed looked normal to me.
    Lesson to be learned here is never try and stop the doors by putting something in between them. If that was his arm, this would be a different story.

    • @roadmonitoroz
      @roadmonitoroz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1485

      I heard about that once (saw a documentary) explaining how elevators work and how they can overshoot slightly and adjust etc etc.
      I've never seen them timeout and go though [ maybe different rules for different countries]. I would expect an alarm to sound and it to sit there awaiting a manual reset.

      @Gogito 875 well in physics what does free fall means? Accelerating towards the Earth due to gravitational acceleration right ? A life works on controlled descent. It's not a free fall as the tension on the ropes and the pulley system lowers the box at a controlled speed.
      But when the umbrella got stuck it caused the lift cables to loose tension and fall on it's own due to gravitational acceleration and the elevator's mass. There was no controlled force acting on the elevator to control the descen.
      But lifts have emergency braking systems in case this happens or the cables snap. And it brought the lift to a slow halt by adding friction to the railings through brakes and thus preventing the elevator from hitting the floor.
      So the frictional force is greater than the weight of the elevator so technically it's at a state of free fall stuck on the 25th floor.

  • @benolifts
    @benolifts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7595

    I am sick of people posting lies. This is a deliberate attempt to dumb people down. What happened is the lift went into nudge mode and ignored the beam sensors. The lift started moving as the doors closed enough for safety to connect. The lift started moving and when the umbrella hit the top it forced the doors open and broke safety leaving the lift stuck. The lift didn't freefall. Saying it free falled is very inaccurate and is unacceptable. Also if it freefalled it would have gone upwards because the lift is under half capacity.

      It's really odd because this channel is run by the Chinese government (like any other business in China is pretty much an extension of their government) and China actually does have problems with their elevators failing and free-falling because things there are made cheaply or with cut corners (search "tofu dreg construction") and China goes out of its way to cover these things up. I guess every now and then something slips through the cracks.

    As an elevator mechanic, this hurts to watch. The elevator worked properly and definitely did not free fall. NEVER try to pry the door open with your hands. You can try pressing the door open button but if it shut down your safest bet is to wait for someone trained to let you out. The town I live in literally had someone die from prying the doors open while stuck inside an elevator (in 2006) and my coworker had to give the paramedics access to the pit of the elevator shaft to get the guy out. He was still conscious and ended up dying in the hospital later but it was a very traumatic experience for everyone involved.

      Why not pry them open? What happens when you try that?

    • @Shahawnafasad
      @Shahawnafasad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1278

      @@Gigachad-mc5qz Prying the doors open can be really bad for a few different reason. Elevators are set up with a mechanical device that will stop the doors from opening if it’s not within a few inches of a floor. They’re very strong but if you try to pry the doors open between floors you could break that device and still be stuck which just creates more problems for the mechanic trying to get you out. If you are within a few feet of a floor and manage to pry it open, you could open the hall door in front of you. If you are, let’s say 5 feet above the floor level for example, you could jump out of the elevator and into the hallway but if you lose your balance jumping out there will be a potential fall hazard behind you when you land for you to fall underneath the elevator and down the elevator shaft since the elevator is 5 feet above the floor. It also opens that fall hazard to the public and a curious child or person waiting for an elevator on that floor could end up falling down as well. Lastly, if the mechanic trying to get you out is in the middle of trying to get you out that can cause major issues. It’s always safest to stay inside and wait for someone to get you out, we come as fast as we can when we see a call come in for someone stuck.

    • @Gigachad-mc5qz

      @@Shahawnafasad ahh yeah makes sense. But most people wouldnt be able to do it then right? Youd think its in the design, i learned to make it so even the biggest "idiot" cant really hurt themselves. Its always possible but at some point its not your fault anymore

    • @Shahawnafasad
      @Shahawnafasad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +574

      @@Gigachad-mc5qz Yup you’re right it’s not easy. If the elevator still has power to it then the motor that opens and closes your door will be trying to torque it shut the whole time as well. The mechanical device to stop the elevator door from opening when it’s not at a floor is a feature implemented around 15-20 years ago so there are still some old elevators that don’t have that device. Another device has been added over the years that is basically a flat piece of sheet metal on the underside of the elevator to eliminate that potential fall hazard if it’s above a floor as well. So over the years they have added lots of extra safety features to make it “idiot proof”. As time goes on and these older elevators get replaced with newer ones it will make it a lot more difficult for people to put themselves in a hazardous position. At the end of the day if the elevator is stuck your safest place to be is inside until someone gets you out. It’s physically impossible for an elevator to free fall unless there is a catastrophic failure to multiple components of the elevator at the exact same time (fun fact as well; if the elevator were to ever “free fall” it would actually go up and not down since it has a counterweight that goes the opposite direction of the elevator that weighs the same as the elevator plus ~50% of its rated load capacity). The movies make elevators seem a lot scarier than they actually are lol.

      Elevators are not a loose box. They have metal strings and parts that prevent it from freefalling even without power or during malfunctions. There's no way for an elevator to actually freefall.

    the elevator is a public good that have to be shared among everyone who are using the building facilities. The father should never asked the child to hold on the elevator that long, he could just wait for the elevator when he is ready to use, and let others to who needs it. I hope the father learn the lesson not to be selfish and putting his kid in such a position, just to save a few minutes.

      That only happens in the movies. In an event that a real elvator would drop down, it has a built in brake mechanism that clamps down on the wires to stop it from descending. The only way for an elevator to plummet down is if someone cuts the wires which is almost impossible without the necessary tools to do so. In fact, it's safer to travel in an elevator than on an escalator or stairs.

    • @markusgorelli5278

      At an office building I once worked at (20 floors) the elevators would be crammed with people leaving at the end of the day. And it was often faster, or as fast, to just walk down the stairs. Now the 4/5 floors were services floors where building equipment was located so the next floor to stop at going down was level 3. It was always annoying when we stopped at this floor, but more amusing was the look of disgust on some of the faces of level 3 inhabitants who were often young upon seeing that the elevator was full (again).
      Now the elevator, when it reached a particular weight limit was supposed to ignore all floor requests to stop and just continue going like a full bus to save time. But this often wouldn't happen and we used to wonder exactly how many people did they expect us to fit in there for those settings to activate. If it was somehow overweight, the doors would pop back open. We never could figure out the sweet spot.

    And to this day the boy never touched an umbrella again...

  • @Hatley-Software
    @Hatley-Software 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    No. If it was a "free fall", the child would have been weightless and floating in the elevator, and after a few seconds, when the elevator crashed into the concrete floor of the sub-basement at 300MPH, the boy would have been slammed violently against the floor of the elevator, rupturing all of his organs, shattering all of his bones, and killing him instantly, and the remainder of the elevator would have slammed down on top of him, encasing his crushed remains in mangled steel. None of that happened. Instead, when the door closed, the elevator continued normally to the next floor and stopped normally. The only reason the doors did not open again was that the child had been pressing buttons on the control panel. He probably pressed a "Door Close" button, which would have prevented the door from opening. The only damage was to the umbrella. Total cost of damage: $5 for the umbrella and about $5 in labor for the team who manually opened the elevator door. So please remove all of your click-bait references to "free fall" from your title, description, and closed captions.
