@@sovichhaysam633 no a free fall is when is falling without anything slowing it down and the elevator was obviously being slowed down because it went down at a constant rate
As an elevator mechanic, this hurts to watch. The elevator worked properly and definitely did not free fall. NEVER try to pry the door open with your hands. You can try pressing the door open button but if it shut down your safest bet is to wait for someone trained to let you out. The town I live in literally had someone die from prying the doors open while stuck inside an elevator (in 2006) and my coworker had to give the paramedics access to the pit of the elevator shaft to get the guy out. He was still conscious and ended up dying in the hospital later but it was a very traumatic experience for everyone involved.
@@Gigachad-mc5qz Prying the doors open can be really bad for a few different reason. Elevators are set up with a mechanical device that will stop the doors from opening if it’s not within a few inches of a floor. They’re very strong but if you try to pry the doors open between floors you could break that device and still be stuck which just creates more problems for the mechanic trying to get you out. If you are within a few feet of a floor and manage to pry it open, you could open the hall door in front of you. If you are, let’s say 5 feet above the floor level for example, you could jump out of the elevator and into the hallway but if you lose your balance jumping out there will be a potential fall hazard behind you when you land for you to fall underneath the elevator and down the elevator shaft since the elevator is 5 feet above the floor. It also opens that fall hazard to the public and a curious child or person waiting for an elevator on that floor could end up falling down as well. Lastly, if the mechanic trying to get you out is in the middle of trying to get you out that can cause major issues. It’s always safest to stay inside and wait for someone to get you out, we come as fast as we can when we see a call come in for someone stuck.
@@Shahawnafasad ahh yeah makes sense. But most people wouldnt be able to do it then right? Youd think its in the design, i learned to make it so even the biggest "idiot" cant really hurt themselves. Its always possible but at some point its not your fault anymore
@@Gigachad-mc5qz Yup you’re right it’s not easy. If the elevator still has power to it then the motor that opens and closes your door will be trying to torque it shut the whole time as well. The mechanical device to stop the elevator door from opening when it’s not at a floor is a feature implemented around 15-20 years ago so there are still some old elevators that don’t have that device. Another device has been added over the years that is basically a flat piece of sheet metal on the underside of the elevator to eliminate that potential fall hazard if it’s above a floor as well. So over the years they have added lots of extra safety features to make it “idiot proof”. As time goes on and these older elevators get replaced with newer ones it will make it a lot more difficult for people to put themselves in a hazardous position. At the end of the day if the elevator is stuck your safest place to be is inside until someone gets you out. It’s physically impossible for an elevator to free fall unless there is a catastrophic failure to multiple components of the elevator at the exact same time (fun fact as well; if the elevator were to ever “free fall” it would actually go up and not down since it has a counterweight that goes the opposite direction of the elevator that weighs the same as the elevator plus ~50% of its rated load capacity). The movies make elevators seem a lot scarier than they actually are lol.

They wrote "free fall" not that the elevator hit the ground. Many elevators (the good ones) have brakes, so if there is a free fall, the brakes engage to safely stop the elevator. Movie-style deadly free falls are very rare.
Nah, some of us don't have the time to wait for that sort of thing. I'd rather save 50 hours not waiting for elevators than wasting time just because a free fall could hapen
Elevators are not a loose box. They have metal strings and parts that prevent it from freefalling even without power or during malfunctions. There's no way for an elevator to actually freefall.

That only happens in the movies. In an event that a real elvator would drop down, it has a built in brake mechanism that clamps down on the wires to stop it from descending. The only way for an elevator to plummet down is if someone cuts the wires which is almost impossible without the necessary tools to do so. In fact, it's safer to travel in an elevator than on an escalator or stairs.
He must've had an angel protecting him that day. To be in an elevator, and have it plunge 60.96 centimeters, going 0.000379 mph, is certainly a terrifying thought!!

I doubt, HIGHLY doubt that the lift free falled at all. It's just the lift descending and emergency braking, every action was controlled by the lift. Descending because the ground floor button was pressed, and emergency stop as the lift detected that something was wrong.
@@clenonwolf hell nah he wouldn't The lift experience air resistance pushing against gravity, making the acceleration on the lift less than on the boi. As a result, the boy would always have his feet on the floor as he would be pulled down faster than the elevatorialism
@@indotravelguy2004 I agree, elevators have a built in limit to how long the doors can be held open, and an alarm will sound if the doors were held open for too long. The boy may have heard the alarm and assumed it was free falling, but the elevator was doing exactly what it was designed to do. If it was a free fall, it would have crashed into the basement. Also the umbrella moved up at the speed most elevators move at, not faster, which would be expected from a free fall.
all this video really taught me was the real reason i am stuck waiting for the elevator everyday in my apartment building - becasue people are constantly messing around 'holding' the elavator waiting for other family members etc instead of using it when they are actually ready to leave. might sound a bit pedantic but when you live on the 27th floor and people are doing this it is infuriating
At an office building I once worked at (20 floors) the elevators would be crammed with people leaving at the end of the day. And it was often faster, or as fast, to just walk down the stairs. Now the 4/5 floors were services floors where building equipment was located so the next floor to stop at going down was level 3. It was always annoying when we stopped at this floor, but more amusing was the look of disgust on some of the faces of level 3 inhabitants who were often young upon seeing that the elevator was full (again). Now the elevator, when it reached a particular weight limit was supposed to ignore all floor requests to stop and just continue going like a full bus to save time. But this often wouldn't happen and we used to wonder exactly how many people did they expect us to fit in there for those settings to activate. If it was somehow overweight, the doors would pop back open. We never could figure out the sweet spot.
Where were the boy's parents at the time?. Why did they leave him alone with an umbrella to tamper the elevator in the first place?. Bad parenting, Bad inquisitive kid. Luckily, no one was hurt, or no lives were lost
@@keith7174 He was holding the elevator waiting for his dad. He tried using the umbrella to stop it when it started to go. He wasn't bad he just panicked. Definitely bad parenting for leaving him.

I got stuck in an elevator once because my idiot friend was jumping up and down in it. We pried the door open and we’re between two floors we had to jump out.
No. If it was a "free fall", the child would have been weightless and floating in the elevator, and after a few seconds, when the elevator crashed into the concrete floor of the sub-basement at 300MPH, the boy would have been slammed violently against the floor of the elevator, rupturing all of his organs, shattering all of his bones, and killing him instantly, and the remainder of the elevator would have slammed down on top of him, encasing his crushed remains in mangled steel. None of that happened. Instead, when the door closed, the elevator continued normally to the next floor and stopped normally. The only reason the doors did not open again was that the child had been pressing buttons on the control panel. He probably pressed a "Door Close" button, which would have prevented the door from opening. The only damage was to the umbrella. Total cost of damage: $5 for the umbrella and about $5 in labor for the team who manually opened the elevator door. So please remove all of your click-bait references to "free fall" from your title, description, and closed captions.

Rest in Peace to him.
Why not pry them open? What happens when you try that?

The lift experience air resistance pushing against gravity, making the acceleration on the lift less than on the boi.
