I find it funny that Death of the Endless gets offended that everyone is willing to visit her sibling's realm (Dream, Desire, etc.), but no one wants to enter hers. Plus, everyone meets her twice. One when they're born and another when they die.

I remember my older brother talking about Vertigo’s Sandman when he was studying comics in an English class. My brother was never much a comics fan. But I remember when DC’s Metal came out, my brother was interested in how he tied into the comics.
And that tells you how good Sandman is.
But disappointed that he didn't do much in DC metal. He should have be the one host "tale from the dark multiverse". Instead of making up a bootleg watcher

Exactly, I wish people would realize this, just because they live in the Godsphere, doesn't mean their influence isn't present outside of their own respective universes. Everyone universe and story contains some form of Destiny and Death, as well as all the other Endless, they cannot be avoided and will just return when said concept or idea is needed or utilized. They're high up in heiarchal status imho in terms of power, they transcend the concepts of power, while Lucifer may have destroyed Dream of the Endless, Dream just returned in a new form.

And heck Destiny doesn't even live in the Godsphere!, in the Sandmad it is said that he exists outside creation and his realm is where the very fabric of reality is weaved. Some people say Lucifer can destroy Destiny, but I think not, Destiny is just is.

I enjoyed this episode of the "explained" series, but I really hope that the "beyond omega level" next is also about Dream. As much as I love The Sandman comics and this was fun to listen too, I'm really excited to hear the discussion of how powerful Dream is. There's so many cool things he's done and accomplished, things that he is and represent, that are mind boggling!

Power that can't really be scaled against anything else. The Presence is more powerful, almost certainly. Lucifer might be, it's problematic. Everything else is chickenfeed, basically. You don't mess with the Endless unless you're tired of happy/healthy/sane/alive.
@@MrBendylaw the endless are “stronger” than Lucifer. Their powers just aren’t used for conventional fighting. They’re more like a dirt while Lucifer is a human. A human can chip and dig the dirt but it’ll always still be around in one form or another. And without the parts that make up that dirt, the human would cease to exist.

@James Scalzo The idea that Lucifer is created by dreams and beliefs is left pretty vague within the comics. There is evidence for it and against it. Like take Odin and Lucifer's conversation in recent Lucifer comic; Odin assumes that Lucifer was formed through dreams but Lucifer is dismissive of the theory.
However we do know for a fact that Lucifer is much stronger than Dream, as shown in that scan by the guy above me.
The Endless are well beyond infinite dimensional
Desire, despair, and delirium all had very interesting stories, and their characters have been explored with some depth. From the outside looking in, it might look like only dream and death got any real shine, but honestly, that's only if you haven't read the books.
Of all the comics I love, this is the only series I read start to finish over and over. There is something poetic about them not making more, as if the story literally continues in dream.
I'm surprised that the new Series weren't even mentioned. "the dreaming", "books of magic" and "House of whispers" continue the saga of Dream not written by Neil Gaiman but under his Direction
me too. but then again, Dream isn't even in "The Dreaming" all that much is he.
Honestly there were large sections of the Sandman where Dream was kind of a bit player. Heck the whole run of A Dream of You he's barely present, same with Brief Lives which was really more of a Delrium story, or World's End. That's what made it so good though. You could have all these things happening and you could see how they're wrapped in the Sandman's sphere, but he didn't have to be the main character in every story.
That's because Rob is not a fan of such deeper themes and titles.

I love the character of Morpheus, but what really, truly speaks to his importance and his scope is the fact that all these other things can be going on, but his presence can still be felt front and center, despite him not even being present in the literal sense. Such a fascinating character.
A nice overview, Rob. However, I think you undersold how good Gaiman was writing it ... so good that one of the issues (the one involving Shakespeare writing Midsummer Night"s Dream) won the first, and only, Hugo Award ever awarded to a comic book (they changed the rules afterwards to ensure it wouldnt happen again).
The whole series was amazing. Very deep, very creative, very original. Totally drew me in.
Neil Gaiman has written some of the best stories ever! The whole sandman series was the absolute best. Neil Gaimam inspired me in high school to try my hand at creative writing.

Almost everything you said about Neil Gaiman's career and how he began with DC Comics, and the entire British Invasion of DC was wildly inaccurate.
The Sandman series is some of the best comic stories to date. Character development, meta commentary, motivation, story, eveything. It's such a great read and if your tired of everyday hero/villain concepts then you go here.
I mean comics are mostly artistic it's just that the ones that get popular are the big war ones that have great story but yeah its war and villains stuff but they're not bad at all
And it has history, philosophy, religion, literature and nord, greek, roman and japanese mythology. Neil Gaiman really made some researchers to write this

The Endless are probably my favorite DC character since i watched Tyler from The Imaginary Axis video about them. They are so interesting and way more than simple character, arguably some of the most powerful characters in fiction period. They have to exist as long as existence itself exist.

Lucifer is canonically more powerful than them. So is The Presence, of course. And the Great Evil Beast. And the Overvoid.

If you get rid of the endless they will basically just reborn . The Endless are universal concepts of a living cosmos. As such they cannot permanently die or be destroyed .

He doesn't represent dreams, he IS Dream. The Black Racer is a New God representation of death. Black Flash the representation of death who comes for speedsters. Death of the Endless is what they represent. Wes Dobbs was a semi representation of dream as the Sandman, maybe. But Dream IS Dream, not a representation. Like all the Endless.

For those who don't know the story, Daniel is more than an heir picking up the title of Dream of The Endless. Morpheus sort of explains it in the Kindly ones. Every aspect (incarnation) of Dream is a facet of a greater whole, a sort of great crystalline entity. You see all these different aspects of Dream in Overture. It's harder to explain than just saying Heir but Daniel is Dream and has that ten billion years or so worth of knowledge even though he's not actually Morpheus, he's a different facet or aspect of Dream.

They are endless, they can't not exist while something is a thing. To kill the Endless, the Beyonder would literally need to completely annihilate the whole multiverse including themselves. And even then I can't say for sure that the Endless would be gone.
Well if beyonder are really strong enought to beat a mistress death , they can defeat them without destroying endless.

I don't think he died becuase he wanted to protect the Dreaming. That was for sure a factor, but I think Dream let Death take him because of all the conflicts he was having with himself, mainly. Since he was freed from his imprisioment, Dream started to change and to see other perspectives (on the matters of Nada and Hob, for example); after he killed Orpheus, it was kinda like the last straw (that's why Death says he's been "making preparations for that moment for a long time, even without realising"): Dream couldn't really change, but also couldn't live with himself anymore, his older self, so he just went away.

Bringing up Black Orchid reminds me of the time one of my mom's friends showed me an article that highlighted some of Mckean's work of mixed mediums, basically a mix of traditional art and digital art. His art really raised the bar in my opinion.

@@goldenxp9404 Think of Dream as being like Nightmare from Marvel if he had a bit of a redemption arc. A great deal of Sandman is Morpheus AKA Dream evolving, growing as a character, and you do learn he was once kind of a major bastard and a screw up. A lot of Sandman is him setting right the sins of his own past.
Weirdly though that thumbnail version is Daniel and Daniel was supposed to be a kinder / more human incarnation...
To be fair though, Death is the kindest of all the Endless.

There's a comicbook (Action Comics issue 894) where Death of the Endless told Lex Luthor that she's aware of dead people coming back to life, she was like, "It's no big deal. They'll come back to me regardless." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Considering how often the dead have come back to life and/or people have near-death experiences in DC universes, it makes sense that she'd have a supreme amount of nonchalant patience, lolz.

To me the story of Morphius is a more complex plot, it gives hints throughout the volumes that Morphius is contemplating quitting his role, but he cannot abandon his responsabilities, he is trapped by his morals, so he elaborates a plot by manipulating those around him perhaps even unconciously, he names an heir for no apparent reason, he plays Desire's games, he convinces Lucifer to quit his duties - perhaps as an experiment- , and there is Death- we see in the Orpheus storyline that she exists outside of time, all this time she knew what Dream was doing

I'd contend that Despair, Desire, and Delirium are all pretty fleshed out as well in the context of the story of The Endless. Destruction has more of a McGuffin (MacGuffin?) feel to him. The only one we don't really get a comprehensive view of is Destiny, but Destiny's a difficult character to personify. Since people are talking about it, I'd like to see Rob try to research and tackle the whole CrossGen line of comics...that failing was a real shame and Disney owning the rights but doing nothing with them (last I heard anything) is a crime.

I'm glad you connected Vertigo and DC. I thought Vertigo was self contained, but Swamp Thing, Animal Man, and Doom Patrol crossing over and Lucifer Morningstar being in Etrigans book in the 90s had me confused.

Death also defines life, so for something to dream they had to be alive first so death came earlier than dream.

For anybody wondering Death is the most powerful DC character to my knowledge she is literally death, once the last living thing in the universe dies she will be there for that, she even will be there for when other DC personifications of death die as well
She isn't the strongest but she is definitely immortal since she will be there at the end
The thing I really like about the endless is that they are above the concept of strength and the nods that respect that over characters give them. My favourite incident when Dream goes to Hell to look for his items and that morning star who is top tier strong in the DC/Vertigo universe but even he understands that he is hopelessly outmatched so would opt to talk and bargain with him rather than any attempt to dominate or defeat him that he might be able to do with other characters.

The reason why Dream is terrible in his relationship as it feeds “Desire”, where Dream does not want to be controlled by.
Desire & Despair despise Dream, because of people’s dream, people tend not to desire nor to despair anymore.
Desire caused Corinthian to desire in living in the Waking world & to kill people, thus forcing Dream to walk on earth. Desire also pushed Roderick Burgess to want his dead son to be back, thus imprisoning Dream. Despair’s realm grew, while Dream is in prison, while people died in their sleep & Corinthian is killing & inspiring the Collectors.
Desire impregnated the sleeping Vortex while Dream in in prison, & Dream almost killed Grandniece of Desire & Vortex that could cause his life. Desire sets everything in motion for Dream’s demise.
In Season 2 Desire will set the motion by influencing Lucifer to want to be with humans, where Lucifer will handed the Key of hell to Dream, where he will face demons & entities that wished the key for themselves to rule Hell.

Very, very good video. The Daniel Hall thing is a bit difficult to explain when you really get into it. In The Kindly Ones you get a sort of explanation about Morpheus being just a facet of a greater jewel (Dream of The Endless) and how another facet can take its place. And also easily be mistaken as the entire whole. They are both Dream of The Endless but different aspects of the greater whole that is the true entity that is Dream.
In The Sandman Overture we see Morpheus co-exist autonomously with these other aspects of Dream. They are so autonomous that he gets tricked into thinking a certain cat is another aspect of Dream.

The sandman isn't a comicbook it's the greatest collection of stories and fairytales.

Yeah, but it wasn't 100% accurate. For example, he implied that the Endless are even above the Presence, and that's factually wrong. Even Lucifer is above them.

I love the lore that goes into The Endless, and Dream is just such a fascinating character.
To be honest, I kinda want you to cover more of the Sandman comics because it goes into so many other mythos, including Lucifer Morningstar.

There should be Beyond Omega Level characters in DC, Marvel,etc that have Characters who ARE the authors, creators, publishers,etc and have a story of them staying in production from being shut down by idk best buy or something and it can be like Crisis on Infinite Earffs but with the real creators of superheros.

You can change the thumbnail anytime you want :D He assumed everyone will be searching about it when it goes live on Netflix and he wants to make his old video appealing to searchers.

This is a good primer for Dream.... But there's a whole 2 year sandman universe series going on right now across multiple stories and people. Constantine, Lucifer, tons of stories happening now covering the entire Sandman universe.
Can't wait till DC writes a story about how Batman defeats all of them
