    Just to let you know when you heat up PVC and sintra foam board, they both release hydrochloric gas. It's best to do this outside or in an area with an industrial powered vent. Also great work!

    You are borderline insane for being this dedicated to your costume. I give you ultra bonus points for having the dedication to make this crazy outfit! How much did Dad contribute to the electronics/motion part of this contraption? A lot I think yes? He is clearly a Technologist/engineer perhaps?

    • @AxcelerationDesigns
      @AxcelerationDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +Lightwish Light he showed me how to solder and helped with the volts and battery conversion. But all the design and placement and configuration of the wings move was me :) and he's just an artist like me. His focus was more drafting and technical drawing though

    • @Lightwish01
      @Lightwish01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I knew he had some mechanical designer in him! I am a Technologist myself so I notice those kind of details in people sometimes.
      All in all I am very impressed with your attention to detail and the use of the actuators. Awesome.

    One thing I found REALLY helpful when trying to make these wings is once you have the wing frame shape you want from the PVC pipe, before actually drilling the holes and playing trial and error with the brackets is to do the following.
    I connected the actuator to the brackets and then put painters tape on the back of the bracket and placed it on the PVC pipe where I wanted. then for extra support, I put another strip of painters tape around the bracket and the PVC pipe.
    It's really easy to move around and it holds as you test the open and closed options on the actuator.
    Saves you the mess of creating holes in the PVC pipe that could possibly end with you having to start over.
    :)

    When you want to shape it to your body,
    I good test is to see how long you must hold before it becomes solid again.
    Take a small section of extra material, put it in the oven to warm and then lay it on a plate to cool.
    Test it's flexibility every couple of minutes.
    When working with the final material, I suggest adding a thin towel between it an you and then wrap it to you with plastic wrap.
    I suggest making more than one, so that you have a back-up in case of damage.

  • @markdmac

    This is such a great design. Thank you so much for sharing the parts you used. I can see two ways to possibly improve this design when I try it myself. I would run all wires inside the PVC to eliminate the need for the wire ties. I would also move the switch to sit on my belt so I could control it from the front.

    • @AxcelerationDesigns
      @AxcelerationDesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all those sound like great ideas! i also thought about doing those things, so ill tell you why i didn't... but if you end up doing them thats still great!
      first i didn't put the wires in the pvc because if there was a problem or if one broke there would be no of repairing it without taking apart the entire frame. Also, youre going to be drilling bolts into the pvc to hold on the feathers so its be really hard not to mess up any wires in there, or to thread wires through after with all the bolts in the way.
      then for the switch... its true its not in the most inconspicuous spot when i have to reach up to the wing and flip it... the only reason i didn't put it somewhere else is because i wanted the wings to be easy to take on and off. that way i could go to the bathroom. or take them off to sit down at a panel. not having the wires go down to a belt or down my arm to my hand made for sense for ease at a con. HOWEVER! i did end up installing a wireless remote to move them up and down remotely. and it works great! i highly recommend that if you want to discreetly open and close them
      Good luck on your build!!!!!

    8:00 Yeah you definitely wanna have a fuse. Setting yourself on fire is _exactly_ what will happen without one if a short-circuit happens. I'm not even joking. 👍

    • @markdmac
      @markdmac 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is only 12v DC. You can lick that and it won't hurt you. There is nearly any amperage. I got hit twice while examining an old gas plasma display. 10K volts, but no amperage. Hurt like hell but not at all deadly. I doubt that a fuse was really needed here. The same batter pack would be used in kids toys without a fuse. It doesn't hurt to have it either so I am not knocking it. But I don't think there is any real chance of fire with this.

    Unless your linear actuators have internal limit switches you're leaving them powered all the time. That will burn through the batteries pretty quick. Either way anyone looking to reproduce your work would certainly benefit from a discussion of the topic.

    • @AxcelerationDesigns
      @AxcelerationDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do. It's all listed in the specs on the website. But yes there are lots of factors that go into buying actuators.

  • @cosarmorprops3906

    Great video! I like the gate hinge idea, I may use that for mine. I am making a set of wings for an Oryx (Destiny) cosplay, but not only do they have to open like yours, they will be opening in about 1 second, and they will be able to do kind of a slow flap motion as well (still working out the design for that part). I already have the actuator, it's 12V with a 4" stroke, and it opens/closes in 1 second. It's big though, about 14" long closed, but it will be center-mounted and will connect to cables and pulleys to open both wings so I just need the one. The wing frame will be carbon fiber tubes, and I will have spandex for the membrane instead of feathers, so they will be super light.
    One tip for you if you plan to use those very much, instead of burning through AA's, you can get 12V with more amp-hours from this LI-Ion pack, and be able to recharge it hundreds of times: www.amazon.com/TalentCell-Rechargeable-11000mAh-20000mAh-Portable/dp/B01337QXMA Cheers! @cosarmor

    I know a little bit about electronics and well done. Just a thought you could have also added a gauntlet and put the switch there. In my opinion it would have looked awesome and easy to reach. good job.
