    The difference isn't in the video quality, it's the difference in editing potential. Both files are filmed with the same color science, it's what you can do with ProRes that makes it worth it. But ultimately 99% of users don't need it.

    There are moments when you can really see the difference if you're looking at the right area. Nice variety of shots to compare in this demo. Some examples:
    - 0:34 the tree bark is flattened quite a bit without prorez.
    - 0:58 The beach grass in the foreground doesn't get lost to compression
    - 1:47 The gradient around the sun has more dynamic range, as does the ground
    It's not night and day, but if you're looking to maximize your video quality, especially in high contrast, ProRes is a step up. Plan to do a similar test this weekend on some fall hikes.

      The bark shot is (inadvertently) deceptive. The standard shows a different, less craggy part of the tree trunk. Downloaded 8K version to check carefully. I.e. almost no advantage to ProRes. Great test, btw, Nate. Thank you.

  • @KarlRaats
    @KarlRaats 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    A trained eye and the context of direct comparison help to spot the subtle differences in detail and dynamic range. This means that for just about any content on social media, (and given the joys of something like youtube compression to name one thing) for 99% of the time and 99% of audience on those platforms I'd stick with standard. Great job btw!

      Wdym, there is almost no differences between prores and standart shots. The only difference that i noticed was grass at 0:55, it's a little bit better. Like 5% better maybe. As someone that shoots a lot of shows. The Prores isn't worth the massive file sizes. I made the mistake of shooting a hour long video on Prores. You can't get the file off your phone. Plus you cannot convert to a smaller file in camera. I had to do a screen recording to get the footage off my phone. So be-careful when shooting Prores.

Lightning should manage 500 GB in about 5 hours. If something goes wrong, ouch. Literally impossible for me to distinguish the difference between Standard and Pro Res unless: a) we zoom in to 500% which already defeats the whole point or b) we are talking about extremely close shots were the extra detail can be seen in Pro Res (like the shot with the tree trunk here).

    Is there any visible difference between filming in ProRes vs Standard for Instagram?

    • @NatesFilmTutorials
      @NatesFilmTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrés, short answer: no
      Longer answer. If you film pro res on your phone and upload to Instagram. It won’t be noticeable since Instagram will compress the video anyway, in fact it could make it worse.
      However if you shoot pro res, apply a heavy color grade and effects to your footage you will get better quality since pro res has more data for those effects to use.
      By the time you upload to Instagram it will compress your footage, but pro res will allow you to retain quality when editing

    • @NatesFilmTutorials

      I have the 256gb option, which is the minimum you need for Pro Res 4K (128gb only allows for 1080 Pro Res) I think that’s a comfortable size, if you plan on offloading footage every now and then.
