  • I discovered the concept for this video from a few TH-camrs including Liane Likes, Little Coco Studio and Seemownay (linked below) who are creating a curated list of videos with other fountain pen lover creators. While I consider myself a beginner I think that I have insights that could be helpful for other beginners in the fountain pen rabbit hole. I’m really excited about where my fountain pen hobby is going and I think there’s room for beginners in this conversation!
The one thing I probably forgot to mention is that I navigate toward Extra Fine and Fine nibs because they are usually closest to my preferred line width for gel pens which is .38 and .4

Sujey, I am So so glad that you added your voice to the conversation! I love that the hobby brought you into an ink world of color, though Take Sumi is a wonderful color on its own. Your responses were so fun to listen to, and continued proof that everyone has their own unique journey that is interesting and important!!!

I have enjoyed your answers so much! I’m so glad that seemownay and liane likes have put on this event and opened the invite to the rest of us to share our answers.
We had a similar journey of the one leading to searching for better paper. I can relate to the feelings of this hobby feeling scary. I put off getting into it for a while, because of how overwhelmingly and vast it seemed. Happy we both took the step, and are navigating it at a pace that feels comfortable for us. I am excited to follow along and see how your collection changes and evolves over time. 🥰

Thanks for sharing your journey thus far :) I have been exploring this world for a couple of years now and definitely agree with you that there is so much to learn and enjoy. I also think that there is a place for all of us along the way and you should not feel as though you dont belong or know enough - I felt like this at the SF Pen Show last year (and even now) as I do not have an extensive pen budget so I cant really get too deep into trying all the high end makes and models and custom nibs grinds. I agree with going for the samples, although I am bit a biased as I am definitely a collector of color and most of my joy comes from swatching and exploring ink properties. I can say that I am so grateful for this welcoming and creative community, and its good to have you here :)

Everyone has a seat at the table :) For a few years I only had a handful of pens and a handful of inks and I was happy with that. My fountain pen journey has been very gradual over 8 to 9 years.

Everything seems intimidating at first. Rarely will you find someone turn their nose at even the cheapest pen, or won't help out.
I love how you said, "I, ......, can't WAIT for another pen and ink to come along." Loved it. Great video, good luck with learning about pens, meeting new people, maybe attending a pen show or pen meet. We hope you enjoy it here. :)

Any level FP user/collector deserves a seat at the table. If you don’t show your experience, there will be someone out there that thinks the only starting point is 100 inks and pens that start at $500. Your perception is valuable and I liked watch in your video! It can be an overwhelming hobby and it CAN be very expensive if you allow it. I have girlfriends that are super knowledgeable about what they like and don’t like and haven’t gotten beyond TWSBI. Even though I do have some expensive pens, almost a decade in, I just ordered a $20 Kaigelu and I love it. My daily “driver” is a platinum preppy that is always inked with platinum carbon black. Keep making updates as you’ve evolved. I do think it would be a really interesting video to see what you like and don’t like about each of those pens!

I loved hearing about your journey, and I definitely think hearing your perspective was really valuable. I've found that one of the best thing about this hobby is that there's always something new to discover - whether you've been writing with a fountain pen for decades or just starting out. I too am a bottle buyer, so I can definitely understand picking up a ton of shade in a new line. I'm trying (pretty unsuccessfully) to pick up samples more often these days, but I think I'm just a go big or go home kind of girl, though, and I really do love seeing all the bottles lined up in a row. Thank you so much for sharing. Wonder video!

Awesome video, Sujey! Thanks for sharing your perspective as a beginner, and I love the color palette of pens that you're already creating for yourself. If you have the opportunity to attend a pen show near you, I encourage you to go and try ALL the pens you can! Even after having been in the fountain pen hobby for almost 3 years before my first pen show, that experience was invaluable. P.S., I love a good black ink, too.

Thank you for sharing. Since you are interested in sheen, you might already know but in case you don't let me suggest a wet broad nib if you want to see sheen and Tomoe River 52g. If you are curious about trying gold, the Vanishing Point is a very good pen. TBH I started in fountain pen with only gold nib and these days the steel nibs are so good that all my latest purchases where steel nibs and they do compare very well to any of my gold nibs.

I think your first two fountain pens were excellent choices! I have the white Safari and the Iris 580 also, and I still think they look great and write well despite having 109 other pens in my collection to compare them to. Also, your first ink was an amazing choice. It’s my favorite black ink: so velvety looking with great flow. Thanks for the video!
