- Steelhead fishing can be tough, especially in California where the fish can be few and far in between. In this video, I show 4 different techniques that can be effective under the appropriate conditions. Thanks for watching! What technique should I try next?

Thank you for bringing us along in your Adventures and giving us Tips. Great Video!
Great job 👍! Thanks for taking us along!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for joining me!
Good job Adam. I’ve also been trying many different things for steelhead. I caught my first one on a bead this year. I caught one on a very small jig head with an artificial small helgramite, and one on a spinner. That blue and silver hammered spoon you were using is my favourite for salmon! Keep it up love the videos.
Glad it's working for you too! Always fun to try new stuff!
Adam; You gave so many steelhead fishing tips, that I'm reviewing and reviewing and studying 3-4 times not miss any. Followers pay close enough attention to all details. I think; in the recent past, Adam has fished that same roadside "Bridge" spot with success. In my very distant past In Alaska, if there was a great fishing spot; it would be elbow to elbow to elbow fishers the next day? WHY?
Back to catching steelhead: maybe the best rivers are in NOR CAL in the Arcata, CA area, in the early 60's, steelhead fishers mostly used: spin glows, Okie drifters, Silver flatfish and Mepps spinners. That's what friends/top line steelhead fishers at Humboldt State College used to catch natural, always super CHROME not colored, steelhead.
You bring up some good points!
Great video im a local to the river you are fishing it would be great to see you out there sometime, i catch them on worms and kastmasters myself its cool to see you catch them on different setups
Looks like mission accomplish Adam👍👍👍👍👍! Nice catch👌. Loved the snack.
Glad you liked the snack!
That was a beautiful fish Adam good cast . Nice when they jump .
Adam, beautiful fish! Appreciate the information about the fisheries. ❤
Great catches!
Well done! Great video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
We plug from the banks in small creeks here in Indiana and Michigan and the steelhead like it as well!
Nice bro.! Come up to Wa. and get on some centerpin steel. We got cold conditions now but in about a week we get precipitation! Nice plug fish! 🎣🤙👍
Would love to fish there sometime!
Amazing spot man!
Thanks! 👍
Using that plug with a small side planer board like a lure jensen side planet.
That’s the ticket here in Washington state when fishing from the shore. Keeps that plug in the strike zone longer
Do you ever just plunk it or do you prefer the planer?
@ I’ve plunked it before. Wrap the belly with tuna or sardine. Shallow rivers where Dan was fishing, side planers work great. Deep water like the columbia river. Better to just plunk it like everyone else
Thanks for the tip!
Plugs are awesome I have an assortment of different colors and I'll run through them all to see what color gets slammed plugs are very underrated for the shore guys.
You are absolutely right! I am going to add a few colors to my collection!
I got my first one yesterday nice size wild hen, a few hundred yards below where you’re at. On my 10ft okuma rockaway🤙🏽
Congrats!
Hey bud. Big fan of plug fishing for Steelhead and salmon. Violent take downs. If you are not already familiar, try a luge Jensen side planer. AKA $10 drift boat. Tight lines!
Luhr Jensen rather
I have a couple I plan to try out next time!
That fish was on its way out to the ocean, it's what we call red Fred's. Through back.
I did a similar technique at a pond in new jersey when there were rains.. there was a spillway where current developed and even during heavy rains when the current was kinda strong, i would just drop a little crankbait and let it drift out 50ft or so, close the bail and it would just do it's thing 3 or 4ft deep..
Sounds fun!
I wish this was still down south.
That plug is a descendant of the old flat fish bass plug.
this technique is one reason modern reels that lock out reverse take away a nice ability from a fisherman. By disengaging the A/R you can really work your baits in streams/rivers. It let's us reverse reel to better manage the bait as it floats downstream (obviously lures here). It's a lost feature and ability for some reason. To me permanently engaged anti-reverse clutch not only takes a useful skill away but also adds a fragile point of failure to modern reels. Just gimme reels with a manual A/R switch and I'm happy.
I have found the best way to fish plugs/ crank baits/ jerkbaits is to first see the fish stay upstream of him drop it down to him and bump his face(piss him off)usually only takes a couple trys if not immediate.
Thanks for the tip!
Nice job, how do you like that reel? I got the same reel
I love it!
You should go after some of Californias giant chromers way north of you. There are some impressive ones In Northern California. And I'm an oregonian so that's saying something.......
Oregon is the land of half pounders
🔥🔥🔥

4th one is yours!
💛...sacramento-ish?...
Closer to the bay
I thought it was a popper based on the thumbnail and was so perplexed. damn still a cool catch!
Nice
Gee, I thought back bouncing a plug in a small stream is a normal thing to do. We've been doing that for 40 years. We got one about 25 years ago just under twenty. Another one for finicky fish is to put a steelhead worm (I like orange) two to three feet under it. The wiggle from the plug gives a little action to the worm and seems to drive them nuts. and a derivative of THAT is to put a spin-n-glo on. You can do that with the worm or put some bait under the spin. So you are attracting with the plug, and using the worm or bait as you main piece. Leave the rear hook on the plug as you will still get fish that ignore the worm or bait and hit the plug. We like the F7 size flatfish but, in really clear water the T50 Hot Shot is great. If you are over a VERY rough bottom that you want to keep away from at all costs, use a set bobber above it to keep your depth under control. You can use a spoon or spinner under the bobber, also. I have a friend that exclusively uses a Spin-N-Glo under a bobber and sort of back drag it across a pool. My last fish was back dragging the smallest Needlefish, one upped on the hook size, behind a bobber.
Cheers.
Thanks for the tips!
