  • The official grading day for our herd has finally arrived. Despite having a serious flu we head off to the farm and see what we have to work with. The most important question is answered at the end... WILL OUR HERD-SIRE "KETTIE" BE GRADED A STUD ANIMAL?

Hello again Dirk just seen your goat grading vid .do the judges grade for showing purposes or meat production.the ram looks like a good natured animal is he the right type for the breed .is he average or very good type is he producing good stuff.idont anything about goats but trying to breed quality stock of any kind has certain rules attached.we have family in Australia who keep goats on a commercial scale I think they might be a cross of your type of goat with another I have seen pictures of them they look a little bit taller than yours but same colour are the white goats white brown head the same type .I think they use the white Billy's on another type of goat but not sure .I have not been over there .they keep some sheep a few cattle work dogs to work the goats .I think they have about just under a million acres .in Britain that is unknown but out there very common .he tells me that because his stock is spread out they become a bit wild in nature and handling the Billy's can get a bit physical to say the least.ypur Billy looks nice and steady a nice thing to pass to his offspring.do you keep work dogs if so what are they . Sorry to be so inquisitive but stock of any type interests me . especially if someone is trying to produce top draw stuff. Thanks for now Ian Birkett.

Hi Ian. Yes these are Kalahari Reds, which were bred in the Western parts of the country where it is much drier than in the east. Boer Goats are very distantly related to them and more likely the ones that you describe as "white" as seen in AUS, but will have red heads most likely so the pigment protects them their fragile gaces from the sun. South Africa has developed a great number of World-regarded breeds, such as Dorper sheep, Boergoats, Kalahari reds, Bonsmara cattle etc. The common story is normally a bunch of farmers getting together and setting ideals in terms of productivity, functionality, ideal shapes etc and then breeding towards that goal and creating some kind of study group or something. In the case of Kalahari reds and Boer goats a person (the procedures are guided by the SA Boer Goat Breeders Association, www.boerboksa.co.za/ )will go through a number of courses on the breed, the first junior courses being mostly academical/theory, the more and more practical. Once these are done a person may or may not be invited to act as a ring official at a national show or three, and then after that be invited to register as a registered judge. These judges then go around annually and grade the animals on the farms into stud (close to the ideal), flock (can breed with, small improvements necessary) or culls(to be slaughtered). Whatever they class the animals at is then how registered animals are entered onto the national registration system (Stamboek/Studbook). My Ram was classed as a stud ram, which was great, most of my ewes were flock, with a stud here and there, but they should in future improve every generation now. Hope that helps!

Your relatives in Aus will probably know these breeds if they farm goats. They commonly muster the wild goats and the replace the young rams/billies with our goats. At 6 months the babies are then heavier than their feral moms.

Yes we did it on purpose not to confuse people on the comments since we mostly spoke Afrikaans, but we will do a proper dscussion on the grading etc at some point
