The guy asking Django to spell his name.. the actor is Franco Nero, he played Django in the original spaghetti western back in the sixties.. that's why he knows the D is silent 😏
There are a lot of references to Spaghetti Western in the movie, Franco Nero, the "son of a b..." said by Stephen before the explosion (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), the last theme (from They call me Trinity), the theme of Django whistled by Schultz, the scene with the snow reference to The Great Silence, Django walking through the dynamite smoke is an homage to A Fistful Of Dollars etc.
I laughed at the "Bye, Miss Lara." getting yeeted out of frame as an homage to women getting yanked out of frame like that in the oldies, cause women weren't able to be shown getting shot or something. I read in another Django reaction.
One detail that is never brought up, but is staring you right in the face for half the movie is that Candi is *not* Django's villain, that title goes to Stephen, he's *Schultz's villain* .
Ignoring the poetic irony of a *dentist* and a man named *Candi* despising each other, the two are polar opposites.
Schultz is highly intelligent, educated,patient, empathetic of others despite his morbid profession and has a disgust foe the slave trade and cruelty in general.
Candy on the other hand merely surrounds himself in a veneer of intelligence. Using French phrases despite not speaking a lick of the language and preferring to be called "Monsieur Candi" , using words who's meaning he doesn't even fully understand and ,most telling of all, not knowing that the writer of one of his supposed "favorite works" was of mixed ancestry and that he would have been appaled to see what Candi was doing and what he had done to someone he named after one of his protagonists.
And, of course, we have the fact that on top of all this Candi is a manchild. A slave trader who inherited a massive wealth and uses it to staunch his boredom , all the while perpetuating the idea that he and people like him are somehow "superior" or "meant to control" .
Hell, you could argue that its this same need to control and to present his own authority that got him killed, as its what pushed Schultz over the edge to just do the world a favor and kill him.
The only one he doesn't do any of this with tho is Stephen ,who he seems to treat more like a wise old uncle.
And while its arguable if Stephen *actually* cared deeply about Calvin or if he just saw him as a meal ticket while he basically ran Candiland from the shadows, its clear their relationship is based on *some* sort of respect and familiarity and even serves as a dark mirror of Django and Schultz's relationship.
Fun Fact:
Tarantino approached Samuel. L. Jackson and asked bim if he wanted to play one of the *most vile* characters he'd ever written and the latter practically jumped at the opportunity lol

Seeing that guy torn to shreds by those dogs was tearing Schultz up, mentally and emotionally; he had little exposure to the gruesome reality and cruelty of slavery.

I knew from the look on his face that he was gonna be a different man from then on. He kinda snapped.
My fav thing of the entire movie, (besides Christoph Waltz's performance), that a lot of people seem to miss is that after Django just slays two Brittle Brothers out in the open in broad daylight, the Doctor runs up and his first, and only words of reaction to the entire display in front of him is... "Who are they?" I've always smiled and laugh at that.

I love the idea that Django's first instinct is to wear fancy clothes symbolic of being rich/civilized after being forced to live as the opposite for so long. And only after coming up with a way to save his wife does he adopt the bounty hunter gettup thats more rugged
$12,000 dollars at that time was the upwards of $400,000+ today. It really paints the picture of why the situation was so dramatic.
Nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture but won for:
Best Supporting Actor, Christoph Waltz
Best Original Screenplay.
Jaime deserved a win but it was a tough year

I like seeing Nine Tailed experience these movies without realizing what a Tarantino movie is really like.
Christoph Waltz won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this and Inglorious Basterds. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and both Kill Bills are more Tarantino films to watch. His writing credits include True Romance, Desperado and From Disk til Dawn
He wrote "Natural born killers" too.

Leo cut his hand for real in the dinner scene but kept going. Everyone's shocked expression wasn't acted but a reaction to the blood on Leo's hand.
Leo was truly uncomfortable saying the N word even if it was just his role. Sam Jackson had to tell him to go ahead.....
So I won't mention those 😉🤣 but only say that I enjoyed your reaction to this amazing movie 😊

Not sure if anybodys mentioned yet, but although Tarantino is known for his flair for the drama, he wanted to keep the cruelty of the slave trade accurate. The Mandingo fighting, muzzle, branding, cutting genitalia, all historically accurate events
Another great, stylized work from Quentin Tarantino with snappy dialogue and fantastic action. It’s always good seeing evil humans get their comeuppance.

In the Julio Cesar room, the man Django spells his name for, the actor, is the one who played Django in the 1966 movie. That's why when Django says the J is silent, he responds with "I know".

Even though I think Inglorious Bastards is a little better than Django Unchained imo I have rewatched Django Unchained more than Inglorious Bastards but I love both films equally.
Crazy how in both films Christophe Waltz played a Racist & an Anti-Racist in Bastards & Django respectively and won an Oscar for both roles!!! Legendary 🙌🏻

The only thing I honestly wish I saw more of in the film is the background of Steven and Calvin’s relationship and why Steven hated his own people so much.

He never hated them, he just thinks like a white folk and acts like hes above a normal slave
I like to believe it's a twisted survival instinct. Stephen probably grew up understanding that betraying his people and coddling up to the white man would be his best bet at a comfortable life. It's almost like self-defense. He interferes and investigates issues that could endanger Candi's business and livelihood - thus interfereling with his own. Stephen feels the need to repeat the points Candi makes just to seem agreeable. He looks at Django with jealousy and as a threat to his comfortable life that he built off the suffering of his own people.

After all the takes they took of the scene where DiCaprio slammed his hand on the table, the one where he cut his hand and stayed in character is the one they went with. He required stitches as well because of the incident. It's so impressive that DiCaprio stayed in character during that event. There are reports that the scene where he smeared the blood on Kerry Washington's face was a different cut and they used fake blood. This is something Kerry Washington has said, but no one can 100% confirm it.
It's been confirmed numerous times, but people love to add extra flair to situations so they say he really smeared blood on her face. That would've went far beyond acting and I'm sure would've provoked other consequences.
Of course Leo didn't smear real blood on a woman's face. That would be the peak of insanity.
It's 100% confirmed. The smashing his hand was real snd for a moment the blood was real but they cut the scene and cleaned it then added fake blood. There is no way a production team would allow real human blood to be smeared onto another human. That is a biohazard and I'm pretty sure is an OSHA violation.
Yeah the scenes weren't shot all at once (that'd be insane, to have a single shoot for such a long scene with so much change in it), but Dicaprio's wound was the inspiration for the blood smear

25:32 This quote is oddly intriguing. The fact that the reason Django gives (man ripped apart by dogs is uncomfortable) is as passable as the reason Candie likely suspected (man they sympathise with getting ripped apart by dogs is uncomfortable) highlights the fact that, whether we sympathise with them or not, humans are humans, and we innately despise the torture of our fellow humans. It's just that some people have tricked themselves into believing some people aren't human, and used that belief to excuse the otherwise undeniable wrong they see, and dull the otherwise visceral reaction.

Same all the cast did amazing my favorite Jamie fox movie he nailed it I also love Kerry Washington in this although my favorite role of hers will always be Olivia Pope on Scandal!

37:26 So both as a black man and as a descendant of slaves, yes Alexandre Dumas's approval would be dubious at best:
His paternal grandmother was a slave of afro-caribbean descent bought by a French marquis on a French colony to be his concubine, she had two daughters and a son with him, Thomas-Alexandre. When the marquis returned to France he sold her and their daughters (to a baron I think) but took their son with him (selling him at first but buying him back a little while later). Thomas-Alexandre eventually was given his freedom and was educated as a 'gentleman', but he had a falling out with his father when he joined the army and started at the bottom as a private like you're supposed to rather than using the family name to get a higher position - around that time he started using the name Dumas which was apparently his mothers name which apparently signified that she was farm property. During the French Reovlution Thomas-Alexandre Dumas ended up becoming the first man of African descent to rise to the position of General in the French army, and at one point had 50,000 men under his command. He led a victory against either German or Austrian troops during one minor war so they started referring to him as 'der schwarzer Teufel'/'the black devil' so it makes sense that Dr Schulz would know about him. General Dumas married a white woman (an innkeepers daughter) and had two three daughters (I think, all I know for a fact is that one of them died in infancy) and a son, Alexandre Dumas. General Dumas had a falling out with Napoleon over both personal and racial reasons (when Napoleon took power over France he reinstated a lot of the pre-revolution laws regarded different races and slavery including laws against interracial marriage) and so when he died of cancer Napoleon refused to pay his widow the pension promised to widows of Generals, so she was left to raise her children by herself in a struggle.
Their son Alexandre Dumas, went without a secondary education, but as we know, ended up becoming one of the most popular authors of the century whose books have been adapted into movies since movies were invented, and it's long been rumoured that he based his most iconic characters on his memories of and the stories he heard about his father.
Grand reaction gentleman and one of the many thing I love in this movie is the subtlety of “who actually runs Candiland”.
Yes Candi owns it and runs it, but when you see Stephen. Where does he sit in there meeting together?
He sits in the position of power even having poured his “master” a drink and himself one before that.
Same applies with when Candi returns to candiland who’s the one primarily running things while he’s away? Not his sister or another white figure but Stephen.
And the same goes for the last scenes. When all is done and said, we see Stephen reveal his true self.
He isn’t some old cripple who is weak and submissive, he’s commanding and in control. He acts this way to imprint in Candi and his sister and those “above him” what he think should happen/be done. They think they come up with the idea so enact it but in truth he runs Candi land.
It’s what makes his character so unique in that he truly is the evil bad guy of the movie and not Candi.
Candi is but a small adversary to Shultz and Django - a young man who’s inherited everything and tries to push himself as a wealthy, cultured and intelligent man. However as we see, he isnt that cultured, barely understands what’s happening around him and requires Stephen to essentially run the show for him and save his ass, and as Shultz points out, his “favourite book” is literally wrote by people he would have seen as completely submissive and unintelligent.
It’s the great contrast of him.
And like above, it contrasts with Candi and Stephen too. As like I said, who’s truly in control, Candi or Stephen.
Also shows how much nonsens reading physiognomie and sculles was but even some scientists followed those methodes.
The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are both a must watch. Especially The Hateful Eight, it's super underrated between all the Tarantino movies.
Obviously Pulp Fiction is up there with the all time classics.
I mostly don’t like much Tarantino movies because of the comicalness and unrealistic level of violence. But Hateful Eight is pretty much the one And probably only one that I actually really like

@@nsasupporter7557 I respect your opinion, but in my opinion, I really liked hateful 8, and Django was honestly alright, but I’m not a big fan of Tarantino, because idk, I guess I’m just a bit more into the more serious westerns and I’m also not really into the dark comedy thing and unrealistic amounts of blood. But hateful 8 feels slightly less comical than a lot of the other Tarantino stuff, and it feels fairly straightforward. Idk, I really liked hateful 8 personally

There’s a few reasons why I didn’t like Hateful 8, but the most obvious reason is because it was boring as hell. Also the usual senseless violence like in all Quentin Tarantino movies. Pulp Fiction is unbelievably overrated!! 🙄 it’s suffocating how much everybody worships that movie. I take it you didn’t like Pulp Fiction sense you said you didn’t like Tarantino.

What's crazy to me is that Stephen, even though he was the worst a black man could be in that period, he was playing Candie. The whole time we see him he's geriatric, shaking, speaking poorly and using a cane. All until EVERYONE is dead or out of the house except for him and Django. That's when he throws the cane to the side showing he CAN stand and move without it, and is speaking a lot more proper to Django. It's interesting that he only does that when its just him and Django, he's almost humbled by Django and affirming that he is his equal.

I "like" the detail that Django doesn't react to the dogs because, as a slave, he probably HAS witnessed a man taken apart by dogs too many times

So the scene when Leonardo breaks the glass and cuts his hand open that was completely unscripted as the part where he wipes the blood all over her face because that's her actual terrified reaction all of that was unscripted he was so in character he just did it

I’d also recommend: “Meet Joe Black”, “Bicentennial Man”, “Rustler’s Rhapsody”, “Powder”, “Michael”, “Phenomenon”, “Daylight”, and/or “Vertical Limit”
If I remember right, Four Rooms had a different director for the different rooms with Tarantino directing the last. What a great one, though.
Tarantino has invented an interesting genre - not over-the-top violence, though he does work in that like a sculptor works clay - he's invented a genre of "imagine if history had unfolded differently." It's cathartic to see some of the most wicked and unsavory characters of history get punished or killed (even though it doesn't track with reality). It's sort of history-revenge-porn.

To me it's more like Tarantino's films take place in a slightly different alternate reality than our own. Events are largely congruent but unfold just a little bit differently.

If you're looking to change up the type of character that Christoph Waltz usually plays, both Water for Elephants and The Zero Theorem are great candidates to watch.
The guy at the Mandingo fight that asked Django his name was Franco Nero, who played the original Django in the series. Used to drag a Gatling gun in a coffin across country taking down enemies lol. One of the great Spaghetti Westerns. The marvelous Franco Nero.
I usually don't mind violence but when Django's stray bullet hit the delicious looking white cake at 38:56 I nearly cried.

Django is a perfect example of how perfectly a Tarantino Western could go and Hateful Eight is (IMO) a perfect example of how BADLY a Tarantino Western could go
Technically Schultz' story about Brunhilde is not accurate, for one it's a mixture of different stories whereby Brunhilde is daughter of Wotan (another name for Odin) rather than a princess or a valkyrie. It's true that she in many cases is kept atop a mountain and that Siegfried/Sigurd passes through a wall of fire but they are two separate moments, in fact Siegfried passes through the wall of fire (since he is fireproof having killed the dragon Fafnir) while posing as Gunnar/Gunter - the brother of his future wife Gudrun - since Brunhilde would only wed the one who would. The matter of the two not ending up together ends up in different ways ending the same way, with Brunhilde orchestrating Siegfried's death. I don’t believe he put blood on her. He may have cut his hand and later they used fake blood. I’m sure they wouldn’t allow actual blood.

One of my favourite Tarantino films, and the greatest over-the-top squib-work I've ever witnessed.
I remember enjoying Django Unchained when it was released in theaters, but it was 30 minutes too long for me, so I don't find myself rewatching it. The final act - where you think Django is in the clear but he ends up getting taken and then there's the extended sequence with Quentin Tarantino followed up by a return to the plantation for another climactic showdown - all felt too indulgent and self serving. This has been true of Tarantino films ever since his editor Sally Menke passed away (she was hiking in 113F degree LA heat). Menke kept his films tight. The Hateful Eight is even longer, but the tension of the chamber mystery and stunning visuals of the natural landscapes keep me coming back.

Zoë Bell plays a minor character in this (the tracker with the red bandana) and Tarantino had a whole background written out but it was put on the chopping block for the final cut.

Sally Menke was Quentin Tarantino's editor from Reservoir Dogs up until her death in 2010 marking Inglorious Basterds as her final film with him. Fred Raskin took over for Django and has been Tarantino's main editor since.
you know there's this idea that Tarantino movies happen in the same universe. i like to think Major Marquis Warren is actually Old Django (given Samuel L. Jackson always wanted to play a character like Django and was "mad" at Tarantino he made Django:unchained at a moment in time he was too old for the role and instead he got to play a despicable black man) and Jules from Pulp Fiction is his descendant. Also, I believe in this universe Kill Bill is the movie(s) the characters would go watch in cinema, like a movie inside a movie Universe. I think there's more to this theory, but I'm gonna leave it at that.

I really really enjoyed ‘Django’😆🔥. For me it’s a typical Tarantino movie. The shots and views to show the countryside of America was so well done. The whole cast was amazing as I loved the story and the action sequences in it❤️. In this film I adored ‘Samuel L. Jackson’s’ performance as the evil butler alongside DiCaprio who was brilliant as well as the antagonist. Jamie Foxx was fantastic as well playing this lone ranger hero🔥. Christoph Waltz is such an effortless actor. Loved your reaction, keep up the good work and have a good one👍
I like how Franco Nero got a role in the movie. Franco was the person who played Django in the 1966 movie.
So, the actress who played broomhilda had no idea that Leo was going to smear his blood on her face; that look of revolt is 100% real!
That blood was fake by that scene

Technically, this is a Robert Rodriguez film and not Tarantino, *but* maybe y’all could consider adding From Dusk Til Dawn to the Tarantino lineup. He’s in it with George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Juliet Lewis, and Salma Hayek.
