Saw this in the theater in '92 when none of us knew Tarantino from a can of paint. The shock of it was seeing a crime film that didn't need wall-to-wall pyrotechnics or giant set pieces to thrill us, just great characters, ingenious storytelling and a faith in the spectacle of realistic conversations rather than sitcomy banter passing as clever dialogue.
I can't hear Stuck in The Middle With You without picturing the ear-cutting scene. After my first time seeing this, I could never get that scene out of my head once I hear that song.
Legendary actors. Every single one of them. Damn. What an amazing film it still holds up great. Tarantino talent showing all throughout from this early film. What a messy piece of a film! Raw and gritty too.
One of the best directorial debuts ever. Even though I personally think Pulp Fiction is Tarantino’s best film, Reservoir Dogs is and will always be, hands down, my personal favorite Tarantino film of all time. The acting, performances, cinematography, dialogue, writing, and of course the amazing badass soundtrack (which I have on vinyl) are all top tier!!!! Not only is it one of the best films of the 90’s but it’s one of the best films ever made!!!!
“Alabama”, the woman in Joe’s scene with Mr Blonde is a character in another film Tarantino wrote, not directed, called “True Romance” You guys should watch True Romance. You’ll definitely recognize the dialogue and characteristics of the roles. The casting in that movie is stellar!
that was how he originally intended it, but that's actually not how it turned out. In the original ending of True Romance Clarence died at the end. the idea was that after clarence dies, Alabama turns to a life of crime, becoming a thief which leads her to cross paths with Mr White. As it goes True Romance got made AFTER Reservoir dogs. During the filming of True Romance, Tony Scott convinced Tarantino to change the ending so that Clarence lives. Thus changing Alabama's fate from a life of crime to marrying Clarence, having a child and leaving her life of crime behind.... as a result as a result of this she never actually meets Mr White.
In Mr Blonde’s backstory segment, it’s implied that this job isn’t what he usually does for Joe. I think Mr Blonde’s talents are more along the lines of straight out intimidation or killing. Not usually a member of a team. But, he wants to get back to work and crowd control is very important to this job that Joe puts him in the group. Great reaction guys! My favorite Tarantino movie is this one.
If you hear closely, in the last scene when mr white and and cop are talking before they both die, you can hear mr pink get shot by the cops outside, so no one really survived this heist. This movie in my opinion has no protagonists and no antagonists, and Tarantino also flipped other cinema rules and made an awesome first film.

Aside from the brilliant writing, stellar cast, and bitchin' soundtrack, one of the things I love most about this movie is that it could fairly easily be performed as a stage play. Great reaction to the beginning of a Dynasty. 👍✌❤
It's amazing to watch again and see the subtle hits that Mister Orange is the rat... Like he rats out that Mr Pink is the the one that didn't tip immediately when Joe asks... The Orange jugs of liquid right behind Mr Pink and White when they're discussing "who did it"
If you guys haven’t seen it yet, you should check out Rashomon. It’s very influential film that informed a lot of Quentin Tarantino’s narrative style. It also influenced pretty much any movie with unconventional storytelling involving multiple vantage points of the same event. Very interesting stuff.
@@penoyer79 - It was both. Tarantino explained himself all during that movies process, even during the debacle beforehand when the movie almost didn't get made due to the script leak. Both movies feature in a close-natured location with doubts of who the rat/the thing was. And he actually wrote/directed one of them...
I think Tim Roth should have won an Oscar for his Mr Orange. He was phenomenal, so visceral here. And his dynamic with Mr White was just amazing (and so freaking sad)

When they say (regarding Vega) that they can “count on him”, they simply mean that they know he is 100% loyal to them. That is the only thing that allows him to get away with his psychotic shenanigans.
Mr Blondes probation officer, Scagnetti, is played by Tommy Lee Jones in Natural Born Killers, another Tarantino script directed by someone else (Stone).
All the actors put on such a great performance in this movie. But the one line from one character really gets to me, when Nice Guy Eddie breaks and screams, "Larry, stop pointing that gun at my dad!". That is one fine bit of acting. You can really feel him there. Up until then, he was on the edge, almost losing his cool entirely. But in that moment, he loses it and even uses Mr. White's real name. Fantastic.
Mr. White was a seasoned Vietnam vet so seeing Mr. Orange being so much younger than him & bleeding to death , it gave Mr. White flashbacks of seeing his comrades like that hence his extreme empathy for Mr. Orange & causing him to over cloud his own judgement!!!! This film has very detailed back stories that Quentin wrote for each character but unfortunately he didn't have a big enough budget to actually show everything & that's also why we never see the actual heist go down either but thank Harvey Keitel (Mr. White) for believing in Quintin enough to finance this entire film which basically gave Quentin Tarantino his chance in the business & everything we got later from him👍 If u want to learn more about each characters backstory, just buy the 10th anniversary DVD & go to the Special features & u can read Mr. Pink , Mr. Brown , Mr. White & Mr. Blondes complete back stories 👍
Missed it in the theater. My dad and I rented it on VHS and started watching in my parent's bedroom. My mom was so sickened by the violence that she made us go into another room to finish it 😆
My elder brother's friend happened to run a small cinema in our old school (yep a proper cinema!) so we got to see this before official release. Everything about it was so shocking and impressive at that time, I knew it would change film making in a big way. Sure enough, got a lot more brilliant movies during the 90s. I think a lot of Gen X had enough of 80s Sly and Arnie movies (although they have done some good stuff) with 1 dimensional action stuff. IMO. :)
So many times I saw this movie on stream and thought: I'm not in the mood for a war movie - because of the title, then I saw the actuality of it and I thought maybe but not today and that not today always had it eventually gone from stream, so now I can say minus the edited away parts I've seen it and it's a number one. I love Tarantino's uniqueness. It's very random. It's the lines of the jigsaw puzzle rather than the picture. It's very cool, and not easy to do.
this movie is so well done. the dialogue is great, the idea is good, the style of the shots works well, andthe actors all killed it. the cast is stacked with great actors. i feel so bad for mr white at the end. he really cared about hsi friend and tried to protect him and theguy was a cop. like he risked his life for him and was betrayed and i feel sad for him. you wilkl never hear stuck in the middle with you again without thinking of mr blonde dancing around to it torturing that guy. thats just how life is now. youd probably enjoy the hateful eight. if you havent seen pulp fiction thats a classic and should be watched for sure. another stacked cast.

So even though Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs as movies- are NOT connected, when writing his 2nd movie Pulp Fiction, Tarantino had the idea of making VIC and VINCENT brothers....just in different movies

Tarantino took a lot from John Woo’s “A Beter Tomorrow 2” in this, from the black suit, tie, sunglasses, & white shirt look to the 3 men Mexican standoff at gunpoint which is quintessential of Woo.
I have the 10th anniversary DVD of this. And in the special features in an interview with Quentin he talked about his writing and about taking his characters and making them sound like real people....making references that movie characters don't necessarily make, and talked about things other then the plot. 'Most people don't talk about the plot in their life. They talk all around things. They talk about what interests them. They talk about the tv show there watching or a song on the radio' I always think about that interview when watching a qt movie

-as far as the diner scene at the beginning... as tarantino says - crime, robbery is just their every day job. there's nothing big about it. so they're just guys having breakfast together before going to work and the conversation content represents as much. -it wasn't just a random lady Mr Orange killed... if you look closely - there's a child's car seat in the back of her car and Mr Orange is kicking at it. he says when they first get to the warehouse "She had a baby!"
If I could make a suggestion that you do a series of apocalyptic/end of world movies. If you can find streams for them such as 2012, Armageddon, A day after tomorrow, Greenland, Dante's Peak, Volcano, San Andreas, Deep Impact would be pretty awesome
I think the word you're looking for regarding Tarantino's dialog is "stylized". He has a style. David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, House Of Games) is similar (and definitely an influence). And so is the dialog in old film noir and all kinds of genres. Rooted in reality but completely movie-like. (The out-of-order story telling comes from "The Killing", although it really goes back to "Citizen Kane"!!!!)
FASCINATING post-film discussion. You are both right: he is steeped in the realism of late 60s/70s cinema (Scorsese, Altman, et al) He's also steeped in UNREALISM: genre, exploitation films, Mamet-esque dialog, etc. If he was more unrealistic, he'd be David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart). If he was MORE realistic, he'd be Scorsese (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, etc) or Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon). Yeah, this is a great first movie for sure. Go watch the special features which you can get on You Tube. The short featurette about the cast remembering Lawrence Tierney (who played Joe) is HILARIOUS. And Quentin telling you how the movie got made.......very inspiring!

Tim Roth is one my favorite actors. I haven't watched it in probably a decade, but I remember Gridlock'd was pretty good with Tim Roth and Tupac Shakur. One of my staff picks working at the video store was Reservoir Dogs.

I think Joe knows that Vic is crazy but knows that he gets jobs done. The only reason the job fucked up this time in their eyes was because the workers hit the alarm. So they know he’s reliable and even though this shit went sideways they don’t see it as his fault.
If Scagnetti from Natural Born Killers is Mr. White's parole officer then we know that the prison he was in was awful and probably changed him a lot, he was probably trustworthy before he went in but crazy when he came out

I get that about Shakespeare. The dialog often seems a bit grandiose or poetic but the dialog is always the driving force in Tarantino movies.

Even the cop telling his story and his colleagues mesmerized by it did a great job. Hell, even the dog was a good boy .

-as far as the diner scene at the beginning... as tarantino says - crime, robbery is just their every day job. there's nothing big about it. so they're just guys having breakfast together before going to work and the conversation content represents as much.
-it wasn't just a random lady Mr Orange killed... if you look closely - there's a child's car seat in the back of her car and Mr Orange is kicking at it. he says when they first get to the warehouse "She had a baby!"
My FAVORITE Tarantino movie, slightly above Pulp fiction and Django. I LOVE the minimal scenery, dialogue, and character development.
I always assumed that Mr. Blonde was more of a hitman for them instead of pulling jobs like this one. Also sounds like he usually worked solo.
If I could make a suggestion that you do a series of apocalyptic/end of world movies. If you can find streams for them such as 2012, Armageddon, A day after tomorrow, Greenland, Dante's Peak, Volcano, San Andreas, Deep Impact would be pretty awesome
I think the word you're looking for regarding Tarantino's dialog is "stylized". He has a style. David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, House Of Games) is similar (and definitely an influence). And so is the dialog in old film noir and all kinds of genres. Rooted in reality but completely movie-like. (The out-of-order story telling comes from "The Killing", although it really goes back to "Citizen Kane"!!!!)

FASCINATING post-film discussion. You are both right: he is steeped in the realism of late 60s/70s cinema (Scorsese, Altman, et al) He's also steeped in UNREALISM: genre, exploitation films, Mamet-esque dialog, etc. If he was more unrealistic, he'd be David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart). If he was MORE realistic, he'd be Scorsese (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, etc) or Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon). Yeah, this is a great first movie for sure. Go watch the special features which you can get on You Tube. The short featurette about the cast remembering Lawrence Tierney (who played Joe) is HILARIOUS. And Quentin telling you how the movie got made.......very inspiring!

Tim Roth is one my favorite actors. I haven't watched it in probably a decade, but I remember Gridlock'd was pretty good with Tim Roth and Tupac Shakur.

I think Joe knows that Vic is crazy but knows that he gets jobs done. The only reason the job fucked up this time in their eyes was because the workers hit the alarm. So they know he’s reliable and even though this shit went sideways they don’t see it as his fault.
The sad truth is that QT's movies regressed narratively after Jackie Brown. Such a shame. His first 3 movies are stellar.
If Scagnetti from Natural Born Killers is Mr. White's parole officer then we know that the prison he was in was awful and probably changed him a lot, he was probably trustworthy before he went in but crazy when he came out
