Such a cool video! Can't wait for part 2 :) Also I'm not sure if someone has already said this but Moghedien mentions in chapter 54 of "The Shadow Rising" that during the Age of Legends, interplanetary travel was possible! It gets cut off a little in the book because that part is from Nynaeve's POV and she's not really listening to Moghedien. Here's the quote: " 'The Age of Legends. Such a quaint name you have given my time. Yet even your wildest tales no more than hint at the half. [...] Your legends are but pale imitations of what we could do. Why...' [...] Moghedien smiled and took a step nearer. '... travel to other worlds, even worlds in the sky. Do you know that the stars are...' "
I loved reading the Wheel of Time Encyclopedia when it came out to get the in depth back story of this age. I think in a separate part 3 Age of Legends video you could dive into professions of the Cosen and their turning points in their lives ;)
I loved The Wheel of Time. I can transport myself to this world when l read/listen to the books. The age of legends data really gives me a better picture of what some of the forsaken were like leading up to their choices to give their allegiance to the Dark lord. Thanks for you devotion in putting together these great videos and educating us further regarding the history of the Wheel of Time world.
I would like to hear you make/talk about a theory that we are currently living in the first age. Supporters to this is that the AoL has some of our tech (just vastly improved), seems to be largely a secular society (our world seems to be moving away from religion), and when Thom refers to legends from the age before the AoL, he talks of Mosk and Merk and their lances of fire that reached around the world (nuclear weapons?) and their battles with Albaset Queen of All (Germany?), and of Lenn traveling to the moon in the belly of an eagle. I am sure there is more and I would like to hear it. I would also like to hear postulations on the other ages. Like how channeling (probably) gets lost in the 7th age, and the progression of how things may have changed from the 4th age to forgetting the Dark One to the 7th age
I always figured this was Canon. The first age is the age of science, learning about the world and coming out of ignorance (Clearly the 7th age is a real Charlie Foxtrot, and basically resets everything, makes sense, its the "last" in the cycle). The first age ends with the discovery of the pattern, the nature of reality and channeling. This happens to a world with advanced technology, and so their power, knowledge and wealth only grows from there as they start to learn about their new power and integrating it into their tech. This is the story of the 2nd age, basically reaching the pinnacle of our potential, with crazy advanced techmagic/bubble universes/unlimited energy/instant teleportation. The 2nd age ends BECAUSE we reach our peak, and our confidence and hubris is what dooms us. The 3rd age is all about coming to grips with this, as we are set back to having almost no knowledge about technology OR the one power. The 3rd age ends with humanity learning from their previous mistakes and fixing them. I think there is a similar argument to be had with the similarity of connection with the 7th age and the 1st age, as the first age also seems like a reset from reaching too high (could be argued from our mythology, first sin/garden of eden) I'm curious what people think the 4th age will look like. It seems to me that it feels like the 2nd age, but with the progressions reversed, where this time around their knowledge will be in the one power, as we've seen that they have now discovered weaves that weren't even known about during the age of legends. They will begin to learn and develop technology along side this, since most of the population still can't channel. I think I recall a few instances in the series causally mentioning some new invention, or something that sounded similar to a steam engine or motor.
@@epederson92 The beginning of the 4th age is well described in various visions in the books. There are various possible futures but in general it will involve a bridging of all the world cultures
there were the relics of the first age housed in the palace in Lugard iirc... one of the described relics was a three pointed star enclosed in a perfect circle that felt of arrogance and elitism... imo a mercedes-benz hood ornament.
Makes complete sense based on the audio book interview where he (Robert Jordan) describes the changes in story over space and time from the actual event. I'd guess in our future yet since no Aes Sedai openly existing 😔
One thing I wondered - re the Collam Daan (or more accurately the Sharom), the site of the explosion where Lanfear bored the initial hole into the Dark One's prison: does this become the Pit of Doom in Shayol Ghul? Makes sense since this is where the prison is thinnest.
No, though you'd think that would be the case. The Forsaken mention at one point that Shayol Ghul used to be an island resort in the Age of Legends, and sources outside the book confirmed that Shayol Ghul and the Sharom were two separate locations. Apparently, while the Bore was created in the Sharom, that wasn't necessarily the location where the Pattern was thinnest. When the Dark One was released, his influence twisted the island where Shayol Ghul is located instead. It makes sense if we accept that the Bore was a metaphysical phenomenon, not limited by physical distance or location.
Great stuff! My jaw dropped when you mentioned the original use of what is later used for the Three Oaths by the Aes Sedai. That explains so much. Were you once a history teacher by any chance? I think you would be a good one.
You might be addressing this in the next video. But there was a lot of research into TAR and parallel worlds and vacuoles, etc that lots of AoL researchers looked in to.
I had an epiphany that no one else seems to mention about the age of legends, when the Aiel are given the store of ter’ angreal, san’ greal, and angreal I believe it was just to give them a purpose and get them away so they didn’t keep sacrificing themselves.
I have all of the wheel of time audiobooks and have had them since the day they came out… I had all the physical books as well, but I gave them all to my son for his library. Happily this is something we share…
It's insane to imagine how devastating the Breaking was that it took society from a sci-fi utopia level to almost middle-ages level. It's no wonder that the Forsaken/Chosen are so disgusted by the world in the 3rd Age. Imagine going from the world they were used to to such a primitive one.
I am pretty sure that the people who downvoted this video are just jealous they didn't get to live in the Age of Legends. Sorry guys, don't take it out on Nae'Blis. Looking forward to the second part. =)
Simple can be good, even a relief to someone who's been used to it their whole life. I imagine if someone from a more rustic age could see the year 2019, they might see that there's no escape from smartphones, constant news feeds, or A.D.D.-infused video games, and find it to be just too much.
I would say that the Aiel were a construct as well or at least they originally were because in Rand's flash back they are treated almost as other than human. They can survive extremely harsh environments where others cannot and had their own rules of law much like the laws that we would give AI if we get to that point; not allowed to harm or even pick up a sword to defend their own lives. Also they all essentially have the same look to them as if they were manufactured originally which is why Rand was mistaken for one in the first few books.

Interesting thought on population. If the 2nd age is a future earth, we can probably assume that population would not grow as you stated. There is no post industrial, modern society on earth today where population is growing (without immigration). If we assume every nation will advance to this point, we can also assume that population growth will stabilize and maybe even decline. There are many reasons for this, but the main reason is women entering the work force and society, as a whole, moving away from pre-industrial, family run agriculture where lots of “manpower” was required to produce enough food. Growth has already slowed considerably since WW2 when there was a doubling every couple decades. No UN forecast has the global population doubling again in the foreseeable future.
If 1-2% of the population has the ability to channel, that means that much less than 1-2% of the babies born have the ability to channel. Channelers live 5-10 times longer than non-channelers. It's interesting to consider the impact that living so long has. We obviously get some of this in the books, but I think it's sort of unexplored.
I've always wondered if we had a map of the world of the AoL and if any of the major cities of the time corresponded with the major cities of our own time.
Well, there's this: www.topsimages.com/images/westland-tear-wot-map-4a.htmlI cant see it too well on my phone, though it looks like it's in the same style as the book maps.
That's what it looks like on overlay with the real map of the world, sure. It looks ike Africa was smashed together north with Europe and east into India with a some compression as well to form some of the brand new mountains on the interior. I cant even imagine seeing entire mountain ranges only a mere few thousand years old.
I just saw your video. A bit late since it's 2 years old but I like your content :). I just think spotted one mistake. You said anything except for death and severing from the power could be healed. I can be wrong, but I seem to remember madnes couldn't be healed either. Keep up the great videos.
The age of legends is the 2nd age in the wheels pattern(present in the books being 990ish of the 3rd age, 3a started in the prologue of book 1, during the breaking of the world). The 1st age is supposedly a mirror of our modern reality(circa 1990), it ended with the discovery of magic leading into the second age, the age of legends. It would be a future world with the addition of great magic power
It's a good thing they had the One Power and genetic engineering considering how weak the Age of Legends would have otherwise made them. Too bad, the ancient Aes Sedai's list for power made them drill into the bore. Even if it had just been an alternative source of power, how could they not have known that it must have been sealed away for a reason?
It is exactly that, though it does grasp the fantasy literature trope that a basically medieval technology society would continue for thousands of years without its own technological growth.
@@mrgrumblebum7613 Are you sure? We don't get all that much info on say the Trolloc wars. We dont know what tech they were using and Hawking is fairly clearly Akexander the Great. When the books are set is early renaissance late mid evil. Its totally possible that the Trolloc Wars were Iron age and the 10 nations bronze. If that's the case they have had a decent amount of advancement. That's just conjecture though.
@@mrgrumblebum7613 Can't recall where I read this, but I do remember reading somewhere that because Ishamael was not fully sealed in the Dark One's prison for some reason he continued to exert influence on the world and deliberately slowed advancement by instigating things like the fall of Hawkwing's empire and the Trolloc Wars. The less advanced humanity was the harder it would be for them to resist the Dark One when he eventually broke free. *Spoiler* They only just re-invented canons ("dragons") a matter of months before the Last Battle, and they made a huge difference.
So are you saying that basic needs were provided for all? Because I think you mean that basic needs were provided for all. (joking about an editing blip at 9:50+)
One of the few things that kind of annoy me about the WoT is it dipping into that "there used to be better times" well. It rings too close to how people in real life pine for "the old days", a fictional past that never was and which they didn't live in, ignoring the great benefits of living in the modern day in favour of some BS notions of men being real men, women being real women, and small furry creatures from alpha centauri being real small furry creatures from alpha centauri.
Brandon Sanderson seems to share this view that the nostalgia for the AoL “utopia” is overblown. When Aviendha tells Lews Therin/Rand in “A Memory of Light” that she can’t imagine living in the AoL, she responds by telling her that the government was ignoring problems that contradicted the idea that their society was perfect and that a return to armed conflict might have been close at hand before the Bore presented a bigger problem.
I always wondered about the time before that... the first age that was supposedly our Earth. I continue to believe that the WoT world was never meant to actually be "our" Earth even with the Mosk Merk thing and the possible allusions to nuclear weapons. Even considering the breaking the continents are all wrong plus did the One Power exist in the first age (supposedly our age) or did it come about in the transition between the first and second ages.
Maybe because they didn't need it and weren't interested. It kinda sounds like Earth was a paradise. They likely did have some space travel though, but presumably no off-world colonization.
I still remember picking the hints out when the books were relatively new, one of the most memorable things with the series. "Wait... is he really suggesting...?" It was so cool. :) For some reason, in my head it's always had this kind of futuristic Japan vibe in my imagination, although I am not entirely sure why that is. Perhaps it's due to all the small influences from east-asian cultures in the series?
Wow so I looked up this information because I had a dream last night that I was doing a past life regression with my spiritual teacher. I told her I was ready to see my past and so she held my hand and a voice told me “you were a Sedai” O woke up and I was like wtf does that even mean! So I looked up the word Sedai and the Age of Legends came up. This is pretty cool knowing that my career is based on healing.

It's been a long time since I read the series but I can't remember AoL being described as this level of detail - I don't think heat exchangers were mentioned for instance. Half this guys stuff seems to be made up.
No, it is all mentioned, here and there throughout the books, most of it when Rand experiences the lives of his Aiel ancestors in Rhuidean but much else in the conversations and thought expositions of the Forsaken.
Since the Great Chism was created by the Breaking of the World, are we to assume Shaara was part of the"world" during the Age of Legends. They had highly advanced methods of transportation, so there would be no reason that they would be isolated as they are in the current age.
I think the breaking reorganized the map with some people going nutz and springing up mountains where oceans used to be and such established the world as we saw it in the books

I kinda envisioned the Age as a Steam Punk, slash Great New World , or Final Fantasy type. As demonstrated in some of your current video games.
And then there was the other thing about the "chora's." Aka. "Tree's of Life."
sounds like the age of legends is similar to the star trek timeline where money and material wealth wasnt currency but reputation was?
It's a good thing they had the One Power and genetic engineering considering how weak the Age of Legends would have otherwise made them. Too bad, the ancient Aes Sedai's list for power made them drill into the bore. Even if it had just been an alternative source of power, how could they not have known that it must have been sealed away for a reason?
And while the Age of Legends existed there were "researcher's," or ("sciencetist,") that worked at "universities," or "laboratories."
So The Wheel of Time is actually a post apocalyptic story rather than a mideval fantasy story 🤔
*Spoiler*
They only just re-invented canons ("dragons") a matter of months before the Last Battle, and they made a huge difference.
And it is similar a little bit to, "our own time."
Was the giant floating sphere functional or arsthetic?
So are you saying that basic needs were provided for all? Because I think you mean that basic needs were provided for all.
(joking about an editing blip at 9:50+)
Lol...that white board 😂😂
Something like the world that we live in now.
They truly had a utopia and then they went and poked at the Dark One's prison...
I got obssesed with the Amazon series since 2021 and now there's no turning back 😅 thanks for these videos ❤️
Like El Dorado the city of gold. Or Atlantis
Who else is hear after hearing about a new “Age of Legends” film trilogy in the works?
🤚
Hey do you play wotmud?
You can drop the spoiler warnings if you're on TH-cam that should be enough of a warning that there spoilers in every corner
Why did this culture not have widespread space travel?
Maybe because they didn't need it and weren't interested. It kinda sounds like Earth was a paradise. They likely did have some space travel though, but presumably no off-world colonization.
"Dum duh-dum duh-dum-duh-dum Duh-dum duh-dum duh-dum."
- the little acoustic thing that plays in your segues.
I have all the books but look like a chore to read them.. Do you think the book is worth my time?
100% yes James. Best book series I’ve ever read and I read a lot. Read the first two books and there’s no way you aren’t hooked
After reading them you will wish there were more.
So basically L U X U R Y S P A C E C O M M U N I S M
I still remember picking the hints out when the books were relatively new, one of the most memorable things with the series. "Wait... is he really suggesting...?" It was so cool. :)
For some reason, in my head it's always had this kind of futuristic Japan vibe in my imagination, although I am not entirely sure why that is. Perhaps it's due to all the small influences from east-asian cultures in the series?
I always pictured the Cairherin (including Moraine) as Japanese crossed with French. That's the impression I got off them anyway.
Sacrificial comment to the algorithm gods.
Oh, yes
Wow so I looked up this information because I had a dream last night that I was doing a past life regression with my spiritual teacher. I told her I was ready to see my past and so she held my hand and a voice told me “you were a Sedai” O woke up and I was like wtf does that even mean! So I looked up the word Sedai and the Age of Legends came up. This is pretty cool knowing that my career is based on healing.
Does it bother anyone else how he say aes sedai??? I? I say e....
Eyes, Said eye?
What is wrong with the way he says it?
@@Violetsoul6 ,that's how I have always said it but what do I know. haha
The pronunciation n the back of book ee.... Idk just sounds weird to me 😂😂😂.... It's just grins and giggled guys nobody get upset.... I still love the videos and will watch u pronounce the words however u want brother..... Keep up the good work!!!!!
Yeah we dont have any idea how the continents looked pre breaking. Its possible that it looked like now as WOT is set in our future.
Do spoilers even count when the books have been out for so long?
There are a lot of people in the middle of reading for the first time. I don’t want to ruin it for them!
@@NaeBlis Hmmmm, yeah i can see why you want the spoiler warning but i think its a bit like not saying Darth Vader is Luke Skywalkers old man in case someone hasnt seen the films. But hey ho its your video your rules.
Yes
In my opinion the Age of Legends = Star Trek universe
haha, got some Taint?...lol
need more spoiler warnings red bro! 75% of your subs have read all the books. quit coddling the slow learners!
Fun video, but they couldn't of had 10's of billions, the geographic wasn't anywhere near as big as our planet and we don't even have 10 billion
We are on the same planet. Our time is the 1st Age. The Age of Legends is the 2nd Age of the Wheel. Same planet, but better healthcare, more food, no disasters. Natural assumption that the population would be higher
we're extremely close to 10 billion. you have fucking asians to thank for that
They had interplanetary travel dude Mogedian talks about it. With the whole planet and space colonies they could easily hit 10s of billions.
You begin with "There are going to be no plot spoilers at all" and move on to explaining the Aiel's role in the age of legends?".
A big disappointment.
It was a Yellow rating my friend. I said no major spoilers but there would be minor ones
More than half of what you say are your interpretation. I assume you're an american socialist?
I am not happy with this story. The author died before it was finished. That shit stain of a person did not use his notes compentally at all.
yes he did use the notes... its competently not compentally by the way
I couldn’t make it past the first two minutes of selling out and dry blah blah blah
How dare somebody who puts time and effort into content as a side hobby want to monetize their efforts... shame on him, right?
Everyone pray for T Combs, hope u find some braincells soon 😔 Nae’blis puts a lot of time and energy into his videos, and has managed to get himself a brand deal with Audible which is a huge achievement. And we’re benefiting from it! “Selling out” is such a dumb term. We all have to make a living somehow.
First of all, Sell Out is a great freaking song so chill. And second, who the EFF do you think you are? No seriously, link us to your awesome, shiny, never dull, kick ass video where you dig into a whole bunch of interesting shit that fans of the series probably didn't know so they could better enjoy the story and get better understand it. Please, we'll wait. Better yet, nah. Just move along.
I'm revoking your combs name. Why hate on the dude for trying to make an extra buck. Clearly he's not making a living from this and puts his time and effort into making these videos for WoT fans.
You guys get butthurt much?
Are there any maps of the age of legends?
