This shopping experience obviously isn't for someone on my humble money, but I refuse to ignore the value of this collection.
It's nearly invaluable, one of a kinds, and items that won't ever be made exactly the same way again.
There's something romantic and precious about what this retailer has achieved.
I support them, if not by wallet by well-wishes.

"The Way We Wore" is a better shop in L.A. ran by a lovely woman named Doris Raymond. She also has 2 floors, but no vetting. If u truly care about fashion and fashion history, Doris will welcome you.

Estate sales, auctions, thrift stores that don't know the value of what they've got, major inside connections in the fashion and entertainment industries...
Maybe the shop is not hers? Maybe she works for that shop owner who is rich enough to collect this stuff...

I lived at the Hotel Chelsea and worked at a vintage store on 28th street in the 1990s. Must have been just before this shop opened. We loaned tons of items every day for editorial, except 1920s dresses had paillettes made of gelatin, so they disintegrated like crazy. This shop is like a museum!

They're clothes. People wear them. There's limited point to wearing gloves to handle something that's going to be worn by someone, unless you're concerned about sterility.
I agree. Didnt get the impression that the antique fabrics were handled with care as they could be. Everyone has oils on their fingers and the expensive, old real fabrics should be better preserved and handled.

These are items to be worn. They are not locked away. Maybe one day they will be taken off the wearable market, but they are still viable and present a piece of history in today’s world.
Even if items are worn eventually there is a difference between one or two people touching a historic item compared to hundreds
Heavily beaded garments should never be stored on a hanger, even with support straps. The weight of the beads will cause the fabric to simply disintegrate. Many vintage pieces have been found lying on closet floors after having been in storage over time. Most beading is done on silk and the fibers simply can not withstand gravity.

She should hire some sort of consultant to property educate her on how to store this stuff. Honestly, a lot of it should probably be in a museum where they have every preservation technique available to them. It'd be a shame for any of these pieces to waste away because of irresponsibility. What's more important, the visual impact of the showroom with its hanging racks or ensuring that 100 year old items are still here in another 100 years?

Old theaters have collections like this too. My mother still works as a tailor at one. The clothes dampen sound a lot, so you feel like you are in an anechoic chamber. It is a surreal experience.
My old highschool has a wardrobe, as well. It was fun!
I think it’s the same as Oldtimers . Nobody would say : uhhhh they are just old cars ! Because those cars have a history you can see and feel . And that’s the same as those rare vintage pieces .

I love vintage. I have one designer piece and cherish it. However, I hit some estate sales and Goodwill for the rest. You find done surprising things at Goodwill. Especially if it's in an affluential area.

I know that my local goodwill regularly stocks stuff like giant North Face parkas that are pretty much pristine for like 20 bucks. My friend does all her shopping there uwu

Wow, having pieces made by Worth sounds so ethereal. I mean he put the bases of what we know today as Haute Couture. Is like having a Da Vinci around your house somewhere. I would love to see those garments and just be amazed by them!❤️❤️❤️❤️

I once found and purchased a 1970s Bottega Veneta handbag for $15.00, in mint condition. Love thrift shopping. My most enjoyable job was working in a vintage boutique.
That woman seems so lovely. Usually places like this or designer stores the workers are usually snobby. Even while talking about the very rare pieces she’s not snobby about it

I love vintage-inspired designs & anytime I see coutfits that are somewhat vintage at an affordable price/discount, I buy it( Yes esp. on the website Modclth when discounts are available that is lol). Loved how the owner described as a fashion time capsule & she couldn’t be more correct. Despite being old, the design, style, & condition of those props, accesories, & clothing still look as inspiring and amazing since they were created. Almost like wearing and appreciating history in an intimate level💃

Wow nasty comments from miserable people who seem to have no love of fashion. The craftsmanship of the high end houses is obvious when vintage garb is still in such good condition. It seems like a museum people can buy and rent from which is an interesting concept. I usually like vintage style rather than feel the need to wear something because a celebrity has but it is nice to see the artistry being preserved and appreciated.
We live in an era of cheap disposable clothing. Of course the dim-witted of this era have no appreciation of handmade garments by masters of their craft that have shaped fashion.
Anna Vajda There's this new trend of being super proud of one's own provincial livelihood. You'll find the bumpkins on every gourmet food video, making it everyone else's fault that they can't get black sesame seeds at the dollar store. If they're so proud, and so much more authentic, why are they watching gourmet food videos?
@@seigeengine I think they do understand the quality of such garments but as they prefer to wear cheap unstylish clothes they act as though that is somehow superior and attempt to minimize genuine craftsmanship.
tbh i dont think most have the money to rent the amazing vintage clothing you are talking about. secondly style is a matter of perspective
If you have experience seeing how incredibly rude she can be to people in her store you would feel disgusted by her behavior too.
My high school fashion club stopped here spontaneously on our way to visit FIT. The guy behind the counter was totally great and told us all about the pieces. They have beautiful pieces and everyone there was genuinely dedicated to the collection.

One my last trip to NYC I walked in here not knowing anything about it. The pieces here are beautiful and pricey for my budget. Just walking threw there gave me a lot of inspiration and I hope this place lasts for a long time.

I have been to this store and just going in is an experience but if u walk just another 15min up the street u will find a goodwill with amazing clothes

I moved to NYC about 6 mos before COVID hit, and I wish I knew of this store. My grandmother sewed couture for Adrian when he had his sown salon in Beverly Hills. Maybe that will help me get a research appt since I am a fashion history grad. student Hopefully, it will open for appts after COVID. It's not great that so many costumes are not stored upstairs to prevent damage.

This is great for fashion history but I doubt u can call it the greatest given how much more fashion history dates back too in England and France. It would be interesting if they had something like this in London or Paris, that would be a treat to see.

@@1..0w0..3 The market for bird headpieces is quite small....rental or otherwise. She's not renting that singular item out very often... The only people who would rent it are stylists for fashion editorials and eccentric socialites and aristocrats and there are very few of the latter. Its not been seen on Daphne Guinness...its not been seen in any editorial ive seen in the past decade...

She's not making six figures on any single item regardless but certainly not something like that. Movie prop, socialite, popstar or fashion editor. Thats it. Im Brazilian and i have a ask , i buy somethings in a store called Birmingham 1919 vintage , i saw a info that store was situated in Las vegas and Nevada , but i dont find info about that store... and i buy a hat in credit card and have two days and still processing is that normal ?

History is best taught by engaging the senses and the imagination.
What do they do about fitting the Vintage stuff? What if someone is teeny weeny? Do they cut away and tailor it or do they find something that fits them? The same if someone is larger than the outfit they want to rent? Does anyone know?

While the shop might be very expensive and very exclusive, it has one of a kind items. You’ll spend your whole life waiting to come across items like these in thrift stores.
I cringed when she mentioned letting her kids run around the showroom. Imagine if they ruined something irreplaceable?
Not all children are ill mannered. As a vintage clothing retailer my children were taught early on about clothing and accessories. Some of the best things in my store were items found by my children. The value and history of the items was instilled early on.

The only thing irreplaceable IS the kids. The rest is old clothes. Albeit, very lovely, inspired pieces, but still clothes. I would gather ( due to her attitude in the video ) that she has taught her children the value of the pieces as historical documentation and the work of highly skilled artisans. Regardless, parents are responsible for the upbringing of thier children period.
