    I have owned and ridden Suzuki, Honda, Triumph and most recently Harley. As I watch you and others on BMW I wished I had owned one. Unfortunately age and slow reaction now forbids it. Thanks for taking us along on a beautiful California ride.

      Thank you for the nice words. I’ve also had dozens of bikes over my 40 years of riding but I have so say that this K1600 is my first BMW , and it is a special motorcycle. It’s ticking all the boxes for me so for now it’s a keeper! Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching.

      You are the first one to notice those ! They are red led flashing bicycle lights - see attached link for a better description. They just attach with a rubber gripper and either are on or strobe .... the more lights you project the more you are likely to be seen = the safe you will be. Ride safely !! www.walmart.com/ip/120-Lumens-Bicycle-Rear-Light-USB-Rechargeable-Cycling-LED-Tail-Light/3661222064

    I had spent 48 years driving those Southern California freeways before retiring in 2019, and I don’t miss the traffic.

    • @thebritonabike
      @thebritonabike  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      And the traffic is just getting worse - now my daily ride is an ex police bike - Honda ST1300 P - th-cam.com/video/Za_m39Zr2GA/w-d-xo.html - I find most cars give me much more room on the freeway when I am riding it - which in my mind keeps me just a little bit safer. Stay safe out there on 2 wheels!

    Back when i was 16 years old, i rode my BMW R/51/3 from Menifee , California to Ventura which is almost the same trip youre on right now. I didnt ride as fast as you are on this ride, but it took most of the day to do it. I rode straight through, non-stop. When i arrived to Ventura my 6 1/2 gallon tank was on empty and i pulled into a fuel station. My hands didnt want to release as i pulled in and stopped infront of a pump. I actually had to ask an attendant to pry my fingers off the grips on the handlebars before i could even shut the bike down and refuel it. Those were the days! On the way back, i learned to stop at Garden Grove at a fuel station there on the 91 freeway. If you can relate. It was heavy fog right about there was the main reason i stopped for awhile. The attendant wasnt happy i stopped because he was busy trying to open his shop for business. As soon as the fog lifted i was gone. That was a fun bike to ride, and i rode the wheels off of it. Quite a bit of difference in power as mine was only a 500cc twin, but still fun to ride.

    Wow, I watched your entire video! I really enjoyed it! My father used to own a 2012 BMW K1600 GTL with navigation + his had the trunk LED lighting that you'd have to unplug when taking the trunk off. He bought it new and kept that bike until he stopped riding in 2016 when he moved to Georgia and got sick of so many people texting and driving. Plus, all his riding buddies were still up north. He and my mother moved to GA to be close to family after my father retired. Anyway, I heard you say you had a Bandit... I currently own a very rare in the US, Suzuki GSX650F. I really enjoy this bike, but I'm looking to upgrade to a cruising bike now that I'm in my mid 40's and prefer something more comfortable with more features and newer tech. BMW, Harley-Davidson, Indian, and one bike from Yamaha are at the top of my list... That Yamaha is a 2020 or newer, FJR1300ES. I do also like the 2018 and newer Honda Goldwing, but not with the DCT. I only want a 6-speed manual on my motorcycles. Thanks for uploading this! I gave your video a like, and I'll subscribe after this comment. Safe travels,
    -Chris

    • @thebritonabike
      @thebritonabike  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Cheers Chis - Thank you for the kind words - very much appreciated ! If I were you I'd be taking a serious look at the FJR which would be at the top of my list ..... but if you want total reliability perhaps a late model low milage 2016 Honda ST1300 ? I ride the police model and absolutely love it! I did upgrade the ST's suspension which totally transformed the bike. The K series BMW's are wonderfully and are reliable .. but expensive to repair if you don't get a good one. Plus the newer high tech computer electronics are having a few issues with reliability on the BMW's. Anyway whatever you end up getting please gear up MAX for every ride and look out for the numpties !

      My K1600 still gives me 35 - 40 mpg as long as I don't get silly with the throttle so it's still an economical ride considering the power , HP and weight ! But yeah - I get ya ... I just noticed you hardly use the fast lane and when you got on the 15 south to Lake Elsinore your on the slow lane.is there any reason for it or its just safer?

    • @thebritonabike
      @thebritonabike  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I typically choose to ride in the lane with the least traffic and the most visibility - this is simply the safest option for all riders. Unless I am lane splitting in heavy traffic; then I choose the lane with the most space between the cars which is typically between the carpool lane (HOV) lane and the No.1 lane. Another consideration is the road surface which I am riding on .. if a lane is very rutted or full of pot holes I avoid it ... hence I stay out of the truck lane or slowest lane as it is usually the most weathered / worn and bumpy. Continued safe riding to you!

      Simple bike lights …. They strobe, or are on solid. They just add to my visibility . If drivers see me they get out of the way and I am safer. Here’s a link to them , they take one AAA battery and are super bright. www.amazon.com/dp/B08MTRPF37/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&aaxitk=b29d14d30955a4a0422e9b5339602bd2&hsa_cr_id=2305653950201&pd_rd_plhdr=t&pd_rd_r=4fa9ba5f-6e87-452b-9fb0-c6e65e57d97e&pd_rd_w=rW6Lk&pd_rd_wg=vtAit&ref_=sbx_be_s_sparkle_mcd_asin_0_img. I am considering either this or the Harley Davidson Ultra Ltd. Which would you recommend?

    • @thebritonabike
      @thebritonabike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a tough question - Both bikes are awesome ... and I have ridden the HD Ultra - just never owned one. I am biased towards the big BMW because it is so incredibly smooth and powerful. The Harley has considerably more vibration and engine sway when running .. typical Harley rumble .... if I was going to buy another I'd still lean towards the K1600 GT over the GTL as I don't need the rear top box or extra touring gizmos that the GTL gives you. But to be honest the BEST advice I can give you is go ride both or rent them for 24 hrs and live with them for a day and see which suits you best ... and then BUY the bike that puts the biggest smile on your face when riding it. Buy the one that when you look it it parked it just makes you happy ! Buy the bike that ticks the most boxes for the things YOU want and need .... there is no perfect bike .. but there is the right bike for you .. right now ... Bets of luck and let me know what you decide on! Continued safe riding!

    • @peterboczan2116
      @peterboczan2116 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Absolutely! I actually test rode the K1600 GT as well as an R1250RT last summer and was very impressed. I preferred the K1600 because it was like the R1250 but a bit "grander", mainly thanks to that fabulous 6 cylinder engine. I also test rode a Harley Street Glide and could not come to terms with the bike. Admittedly its not quite the model I want. The best analogy I can give is that the BMW is like a Japanese bullet train. Smooth, ,fast and efficient. Whereas the Harley is more like the Flying Scotsman. It is old fashioned in comparison, but has a certain charm all of its own.@@thebritonabike

      In the USA it is legal to overtake or undertake ... however in most of Europe although it's not technically illegal to undertake it can and will get you a ticket / fine and points on your license for careless or reckless driving. The UK Highway Code says…
      Rule 267 states that you should "Overtake only on the right” and is complemented by Rule 268 which adds "Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions, you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.”
      Rule 163 states "only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do so”.

      @@thebritonabike thank you for your quick reply. I always like to learn new things. Yes I hate to have to move to the right/middle lane to pass someone that will not move over .

    I worked on the roads for 40 years and have been riding motorcycles for almost 60 years... great video except for you stopping on the side of the live freeway for no real reason...That’s asking for an accident!! The absolute worst thing you could do!! Otherwise nice video!!

      Whilst I agree in principle, you will note that there was very little very little traffic and a wide hard shoulder to pull over on to. But 100% getting off the freeway and finding a gas station or rest stop to stop at would be a safer option. As a safety instructor with 40+ years of riding experience I have stopped and will continue to stop and help stranded motorists and motorcyclists whenever I can or am needed. It’s all a question of making good judgment calls and safe decisions. Thank you for watching - ride safely!

    “…heading down to help instruct at an intermediate class…..” and within a minute of riding contravenes a rule of the road. Amber light clearly displayed and low enough speed to stop decides to blast it through. Even US road law cites to stop on an amber and not to speed up….. couldn’t be bothered with the rest of the video as if this is his standard of skills then huge doubt on everything else he does and he even cites himself as a motorcycle safety instructor on his profile. Suggest a rethink matey.

      Of course you are correct, except to say that going through a yellow light is not illegal. It's not a 'rule of the road', an amber light is more a warning light /precaution or safety recommendation to get ready to stop for a red light. A decision to run a yellow light or speed up through an intersection should be based on available safety factors, experience and a riders skill level. I have 43 years of riding and over 600K miles on street bikes and have never had an accident. And as an instructor for the Highway patrol I am well aware of the laws and the need to set a good example with my riding. I am in fact forbidden to show myself speeding or breaking any traffic laws in my videos. I apologize if you my felt my riding was offensive in any way. I do appreciate you pointing it out to me and in any future videos I'll try to do better. I wish you continued safe riding.

      @@thebritonabike I was not offended by your riding, just saddened that so early on you dropped the standard and validity of your experience you are trying to pass on. CA traffic cites you are to stop on yellow if you had plenty of time. You did have time and the attitude you showed after saying you didn’t want to wait didn’t help. Any video that increases skill, awareness and confidence is great and that’s why I watch them. I rode my first police bike in ‘93 and have recently retired. I still ride, instruct and assess advanced riders and advanced masters. I attended and investigated all too many fatal motorcycle accidents and a common factor was someone riding outside their skill level and emulating others who give or demonstrated poor advice or behaviour. Posting videos and face to face instruction is an incredibly responsible privilege where you could and do influence someone’s decisions and behaviour in the saddle. I would hate to see someone gamble with a traffic light and get it wrong as having seen the results first hand and the effect on the families is something that should never be repeated. Any positive instruction you give, and by example, can and will keep a rider alive to enjoy the ride and continue into old age, just as you an I are doing. I no way do I hope you feel I’m talking down to you or disrespecting you in my comment as I can only wish you well at all times. Ride safe brother and keep your bike pointing at nothing and may your rubber always stick to the road.

      Thank you for the insightful reply and I agree with you on all points. As you point out my responsibility as a motorcycle safety instructor is to always set a good example and to teach lesser experienced riders better riding skills by my own example. Anyway like I said in my previous comment I'll try to do better and ensure that any future riding videos I post don't exhibit that kind of riding behavior. If you are based in So Cal perhaps we could meet up and ride together ? I'd love to interview you as an experienced professional rider and instructor, and I am sure your knowledge and experience is vast. As always I wish you continued safe riding. @@jamesmclellan6301
