The vocals were recorded 6 weeks after the birth of their second daughter. It is clear that she was not yet in full possession of her strength, but she still delivers a performance that very few people can achieve when they are 100% fit. Two weeks were planned for the recording, but she completed it in 6 days. She probably wasn't trying that hard. Tuomas also said that she was perfectly prepared. What would she be able to do if she was in top shape?
Absolutely in love with this track! It's probaboy the best song of all of Floor era for me. Give it a few more listens... it's so complex it takes a few gos to take all in. It gets better every listen. Most songs get boring after you've heard them twice, Nightwish needs 10 listens until you actually get everything and even then there will be more. What a band, what a composition! Lyrics are so multilayered and I keep finding different meanings. This is exactly what I've been hoping for.
Nightwish is constantly evolving and exploring their boundaries. As a band of nearly 30 years, that is applaudable. This song opens new venues, and I can't wait for more
In the middle of the lyrics: "Lords of a single fly" Lord of the Flies is a book inspired by a true story. Rutger Bregman told the real story behind the book in his book "Alle mensen deugen" and this inspired Tuomas for one of the songs of Yesterwynde. I don't know if it's this song. This song is also ending with a Troy solo, this time his Uilleann pipes, not his voice. I've heard it now for the second time and it's growing on me. Of course the music, the whole composition is brilliant and every musician has it's own part dedicated to the song. Love it.
I think this is a great track. The fast sections are a challenge to her and she rises to that challenge. Her performance is terrific and the variation in the song, while retaining coherence, is a signature of Tuomas's writing.
This is essentially Once epic instrumentals combined with Floors 'blow your face off'-Belts and some Imaginearum-references built in as well (anyone caught the Scaretale sidekick? ;) ) I love everything about this. And what might feel rushed the first time will flow much easier the following times. The faster vocals with highly difficult placement I think are a thing that Floor and Toumas figured out with Shoemaker on Human::Nature. It might be offputting at first but it unfolds a very unique dynmic I'm not sure I've heard anywhere else yet.
For the quiet "deserted in Ocean drifting" part I had a strong "Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner" vibe, like the part when the lyrics are "Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink.." - I could be totally wrong if there are any inspiration out of it or not, but I know Tuomas likes both Iron Maiden and poetry (Iron Maiden’s song “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is indeed based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem of the same name, written in 1797-98 and the middle part spoken chapter in the song is the words from the poem. Also Tuomas likes Coleridge’s poetry among other great poets)..
I really liked this. The imagery of the butterfly reminds me of the butterfly effect, in the way it gave me the feeling of the ship weathering a storm. Which is also a human trait, imo.
Tuomas said this song is about people we meet along the way in life, each person represent a island.. and the one steering the ship, Tuomas, or maybe you.. it could be your story right, but Tuomas proberly did write it as him steering the ship. feel some imaginarium vibes here, also some melody parts reminds a bit if the NW song Sahara, and the part singing Mad despair is very Scaretale.. i do think its a great song, i didnt catch it at first listen, i was also pretty tired, maybe thats why, but now i get on a journeu with it, sailing this ship.. love it!!
Nope you're not alone in the "rushed feel" dept. An issue during the pre-prod of H:N already, when Tuomas got criticized by Floor/Marko for just throwing out too many syllables to sing, leaving it up to Floor to match way too many words to the rhythm. His rather offhanded answer was that Floor would find a way to "make it work". In the verses of e.g. Shoemaker, the "unnatural phrasing" is already apparent. This is why Floor made light of the situation by calling it a "sing-along". Her recent Aardschok metal mag interview however, signals that the Valkyrie Goddess has had enough.
It doesn't feel rushed to me - but then again I come from an area where speech is generally faster. I like to sing along with this song. Floor recorded the vocals for this album six weeks after giving birth and completed them in roughly a week (she had practiced them while she was pregnant with Lucy). If she could sing them while pregnant and her diaphragm was compressed, I feel it's fine. If I can appreciate the lyrics and sing along, I feel it's fine.
Obviously, your opinion is valid, but it's weird to criticize Floor's vocals by saying you love when she windmills. Floor only windmills in the instrumental sections anyway. 🤷♂️
Great reaction! You absolutely summed up what I thought of this track. Apart from the frenetic vocals in the first part of the song the rest was awesome.
This song gets better every time I listen to it. Which says a lot, because I loved it the first time I heard it. I wonder if there is a point where Floor can breath in between. But her technique is out of this world and her lung capacity makes this possible. This is musical top sports. I Find the mix a bit " the wall of sound" like we hear at Devin Townsend. You really need a good sound system or a good headphone to enjoy everything beautiful that comes along. But from the point of view of composing.......nothing beats this. Absolutely stunning. And that last part with Troy? They play that in heaven.
No offence, but first tou say they are not using Floor's range and then you say the song doesnt call for that. I love Floor, have seen her about 14 times ( 5 times with Nightwish and 9 times solo) but Nightwish isn't Floor alone. She isn't rushing, Tuomas is pushing her to new levels every single time.
Btw there are enough parts where Floor can do her thing, raw metal without vocals parts, guitarsolo. Btw the driving insane beat is madness we’re drifting in. Love it.
Hello again, Joel. Personally, I love this track. Jeez... Kai must be exhausted at the end of 10 minutes, despite the slower interludes and ending. I didn't get the same feeling about Floor and the rapid lyrics... I thought Floor handled them fine and her range was great as always. This was a fantastic composition ... another of Tuomas's multi-movement masterpieces with Empuu and Jukka coming in heavy in two sections and then Troy killing it on the pipes at the end. Thank you for continuing to react to our beloved Nightwish. All the best from Phoenix.
I listened to this song several times before this video dropped and I can say trying to read the lyrics while processing everything that's happening is disorienting, you gotta get acclimated with the rhythm and melodies and then try to parse through the lyrics.
This second listen already sounded better. I agree about the fast singing tempo. Otherwise, a heart-warming ensemble. Wait for the full record to be completed and how this fits into context.
I love this song, and the way Tuomas wrote the lyrics. It's hectic, and what isn't hectic in these days...everyone trying to find a place to rest and enjoy life.....and it seems there is no place to find rest! ( This one kind of reminds me of the song " Noise"....just NY opinion.)
It is good interview. There he said that fifth song you need to do or know something of mathematics. I don't know just much mathematics but wait what he mean.
Nightwish, or rather Tuomas, are way past doing the easy and catchy pop song by now. It's been evident for the past few albums. Most of their new songs don't sound super good to me on a first listen. And I like them more and more each listen. By ten listens and a few weeks I've learned to really appreciate them. As this has been going on for a while, I've learned to trust them. If and when I don't love a new Nightwish song at first, I know I will.
I listened to the song earlier before the lyric video and said to myself, I need the lyric video. That has not helped. When I know the lyrics this will sit better. As far as the composition is concerned it's awesome, all you want from nightwish.
Exactly. They wouldn't release anything that would feel rushed or not meet their artistic standards. But this song live...my God kudo's to Flood for remembering all the lines.
Hi Joel, greetings from UK With the last two tracks I thought they got better with each listen, I hope this one does too I agree with you that it seemed rushed in the beginning. I wonder if the reason they are not touring with this album is that some of the tracks are not going to be played live? It is hard to imagine at the moment how this would sound live. It sounds more like a song to be enjoyed sitting at home with good headphones and a drink! 😁
This is one of the tracks that need a couple of listens to appreciate the full complexity and layers. I love it but I understand the first reaction "confusion".
Great new song. I know there's a bit of a wait, but I'd be interested in seeing this live, especially given how Floor has picked up a habit of messing up the lyrics to her own songs of late! 😆 This one's definitely gonna be a challenge to sing live...
Brilliant! Apart from minor & by now quite familiar issues like Emppu once again reduced to chugga-chugga; the redundant Troy appendix/epilogue; overbearing classical orchestration changing melodic metal into filmscorish folk rock; lyrics randomly thrown at a rhythm, cuz "Floor will make it work" (with unnatural phrasing, as in Shoemaker's verses), and the New Nightwish signature mix which seems geared towards drowning out Floor's vocals.. this song is a solid 10/10 🤘
I agree with you, in first three minutes lyrics go too fast and too many syllables that even Floor had to be too focused on fitting to the tempo that you can feel it. After all, Tuomas is not a singer and sometimes his ideas just do not fit with real singing. However the melody is great. I personally just do not think that Troy was needed to make already perfect song even better, it is just useless. Not bad, he plays that theme really nice, but... why? Because he has to be somewhere? Great song anyway.
The whole album is a masterpiece but (sorry Tuomas) let down by a mix that puts the wonderful orchestral and choral parts above the Kai, Empuu and Floor. There are moments when the beat changes but the drums are so low in the mix you don't notice for a couple of seconds. Shame, because the music and the performances are superb.
If you listen to older studio videos or listen to the songs, Floor's voice is more buried in those as well. I don't remember how the mix is in even older songs. I have not listened many studio versions from Floor's era, but those that I have, it has been like this. I think Tuomas wants to bring other elements more front in albums than in live shows. I might be wrong, but this is my limited impression.
@@kimmomatikainen1843 I can't speak to that as I prefer them live. Pushing the actual star of the band into the background seems remarkably stupid to me. Frankly I think the band has been in decline since Marko left.
Tuomas continues to challenge Floor and she continues to hit it out of the park.
This song is an absolute banger.
As a Nightwish fan...I can't speak for everyone, but this track is f****ing epic. Vintage NW
I love how they've show cased kai in this one just relentless drumming
I had a HUGE smile on my face listening to this for the first time...... and I'm still smiling
I concur 😊

What an amazing journey. This song has it all and doesn't disappoint. I'm entirely in love with this. It's everything Nightwish is. 🥰🥰🥰
Thuomas: I have some difficult lyrics for you
Floor : hold my whiskey
Floor joked a while back about having to tell Tuomas, "You know I have to breathe, right?"
I think this may have been the song they were working on.
My favorite track. Just listen it 3 times. The lyrics are beautiful, we are all on our Island in a mad world….go and find your best spot in it. ❤
Floor is 1st class here, Tuomas really challeged here on this one but hey.....who else can do it...there's only one Floor
This song is ....... f*****g...... awesome!!!!!
A Human cant sing this lyrics .. But our Valkyrie do it. A new Masterpiece from Tuomas
This is a banger where the whole band shines…masterpiece🤟🤟🤟
Performed live it will be fantastic!

This is Nightwish! ❤
Stunning song. Best one in years to my ears.
Best one since Greatest Show imo
Don't you worry, Nightwish's new balls Kai Hahto and Jukka Koskinen from Wintersun will be able to keep up the tempo as long as necessary.
MAGNIFICIENT MUSIC - PERIOD. All the band imperious. Just wonderful.
Nightwish is constantly evolving and exploring their boundaries. As a band of nearly 30 years, that is applaudable. This song opens new venues, and I can't wait for more

Tuomas has a complex poetry story to be told for the world. How to do it? He writes a song. That is Nightwish.
What a banger, a smorgasbord of musical delights and EPICNESS 🙏😊👍❤️
I want to see it LIVE !!!!!!!!!!! EPIC - the symphony orchestra is fantastic
I think this is a great track. The fast sections are a challenge to her and she rises to that challenge. Her performance is terrific and the variation in the song, while retaining coherence, is a signature of Tuomas's writing.
Love it. Very heavy and progressive. One time in 2022. Awesome show in the States.
I personally love the lyrics! Floor is a musical chameleon. The guitar riff is everything

This is the first of their singles for this album that I loved right away, clicked with me so fast. I love it 🥹

@@Columbasta Wow, just read parts of the interview - apparently she hates the album. 😳
This track is outstanding!
FYI - I think Floor actually chose this to be the third single released.
She is obviously pretty comfortable with it. 👍🙃
Damn! Kai got a workout, actually they all did with this one! I can't wait to hear the whole album. The story continues.
Nightwish fan since 1996. This entire album, I think, is their best, start to finish! Still miss Marko, though....
Love it. Heard a tiny bit of "Master Passion Greed" and a little "Meadows of Heaven" and some side 2 of Humen !! Nature in it
