      I do it every day. A leisurely stroll in the garden with a coffee? Big joke on me as there is always a job screaming to be done. An hour later and a long way from the coffee, well, with all the plant growth it is a wonder we don't have abundant mug trees.

    i was just browsing "how to overcome depression and laziness/motivate yourself and be more productive" videos and i gotta say... its more centering and inspiring to watch your videos than to listen to conversations between patients and therapists.

      I agree! After some family tragedies and relocating myself from my family I fell to clinical depression taking me over last year and that’s how I found these amazing homesteaders in TH-cam who help me smile and feel good as I fight a new battle in life so keep fighting and find good happy educational things here to help you out :)

      If you’re looking for more videos on mental health, I found ‘the school of life’ channel helpful, the videos are animated & short but super informative :) there are also a few therapists with channels like Kati Morton or Tracey Marks, if you’re looking for something packed with information. I don’t really watch them, but I like to watch Mel Robbins to learn how to motivate myself 💪

    Years ago I had to go to the court house in town for some business, and by the front door were lots of hollyhocks growing and most were dry with seed heads on them. I didn't dare to pick one, come on, after all I was at the courthouse and it felt like I would be stealing! All day I couldn't forget those seed heads and the next day neither, so I figured they would be thrown into the dumpster anyway, so I went back and picked some seed heads from different plants (I didn't get into trouble!). The next year I planted those seeds and I had the the most colorful hollyhock bed ever, in every color that hollyhock grow! It was my most crazy, successful seed saving experience ever!

      There are a lot of them.💞 A few months ago I took my 92 year old mom to the doctor and they had a beautiful plant in the office. My mom wanted to take a cutting from it but the nurse called her in for her appointment. While she was in with the doctor a lady came in to water and care for the plants and we got talking. She said THIS plant! Someone keeps nipping off pieces of it and I can't get it to bush out like I'd like. I thought ooops, glad mom got interrupted.🙄

    I am probably your Mom's age and everywhere I go I have baggies with paper towels and a small pruner. If I can't get seeds I take cuttings home and root them. I do shrubs, perennials to root which is really not hard and saved so much money. Then I have envelopes and baggies for seeds. My kids used to get so embarrassed. One time we were at a wedding reception in one of the old mansions in Rhode Island. The had some gorgeous hydrangeas and another shrub I had never seen before. I pu!led out my little black bag and out came the mini pruners. One daughter was sent for ice water, the other was trying to hide me whisperin Mom, Mom put it away, there going to see you! Well I took them home and rooted them and they were gorgeous. I was able to give the bride a nice hydrangea on her anniversary when they got a house. Funny now twenty years later they brag about how I can grow anything and tell the story of that wedding. Save seeds, take cuttings, keep your clippers and baggies handy. You never know when your going to need them!

    • @lilyxciv5637
      @lilyxciv5637 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have any advice on rooting cuttings? I’ve been trying to do so this year and I got exactly ONE cutting to take, out of about 40 I’ve tried throughout the summer that all died (other than tomato suckers and mint which I’ve been rooting continuously without issues).

    • @colliecoform4854
      @colliecoform4854 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lilyxciv5637 I use a hormone powder. Take a cutting about 6 inches, can be less, demos all but too set of leaves. Dip the bottom 2 inches in the powder. Make sure there is at least one set of leaf nodes. I use plastic cups, 8 oz for perennials, 16 oz. for shrubs like hydrangeas but it really doesn't matter. Clear cups let you see root development without pulling the cutting to check.
      Moisten the potting soil then use a pencil or chop stick to make hole, out cutting in and then press the soil around it. To keep it moist I will put it in a clear plastic bag, zip lock, or a clear Rubbermaid container and place in the shade, or filtered light. During the summer when it is hot you may have to open and vent just make sure it stays moist. I have rooted without the plastic bags but they do seem to go faster in plastic. I have some perennials going right now that are not in plastic and they are doing fine. We have been having really not temps and I knew I would just have the bags open most of the time so I didn't bother. Woody shrubs work better in the spring with new growth but you can still use them later, just scrape the back in places and make sure you have leaf nodes. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm doing this while having my morning coffee and waking up. Lol.

She would just laugh & say it will only make it grow fuller. She could grow anything. If she’d had a wooden fence, it would have sprouted, I’m sure. You just always make my days brighter. You are such a light in what is becoming a darker world. Keep doin what you’re doin, it’s good. 🙏Philippians 1:3🙏 Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏

One of my favorite quotes, which is actually from a book on fermentation, is, “Reject the cult of expertise.” I love that. Great share. My old rooster was named Jack-Ralphie, the kids combined two names that we couldn't agree on just one. Lol. Might want to check on those tomatoes, maybe they are determinates. Determinate tomatoes will die after producing even if there's still tomatoes on the vines. Also, check you water intake at the end of that bed. Just stick a probe into that soil and check to see if they are getting enough water or not. And maybe plugging in a giant box fan in that area, you might have some excess muggy conditions that don't have adequate air flow for the plants so they're essentially rotting away because they can't get dry enough. Just some ideas to check on why you could have diseased plants in that area of your greenhouse. I am also like that about seed saving. I tend to find seeds even when I'm not even looking for them. Lol. Thank you for sharing, take care.

    I hope y'all had a joyful family celebration this today! Family weddings are some of my favorite memories.
    Your "try it and see what happens" approach to gardening has been very encouraging to me. I planted a garden for the first time in 6 or 8 years this year. I was really late getting started, and without having listened to you I probably wouldn't have gone for it.
    Now I have 20 something tomatoes ripening, more basil that I'll ever use and some pretty flowers along with a few other assorted herbs. I may even get a pepper or 2. My 8 year old daughter has had a great time gardening with me. We went on a horn worm hunt with a black light last night. It's been great. So thank you for your encouragement!! It has enriched my life during what is otherwise a pretty tough season.

    I found joy in your story today, about being a compulsive seed saver. It made me think about the seeds of joy that you are always planting in the lives of those around you. I find contentment in your videos. Also, I had my very first tomato sandwich using home grown tomatoes this weekend, and it was AMAZING! You inspire so much happiness. Thank you.

    I've always heard that 'hot house' tomatoes aren't as good. Would the high tunnel be considered a hot house? If so, is the taste any different from the high tunnel as compared to outside?

    I maintain that anyone's first year of gardening (indoor or outdoor doesn't matter) in a new place is really their trial and error year. I was an indoor gardener for many years (almost 20), and I have just started outdoor gardening. Nothing has worked right for me, but I've learned a ton about gardening in my climate. Don't quit.

    I am so happy you mentioned that letting one fruit get completely grown out would not "tell the plant to stop producing". I've always been too paranoid to let one go to seed because I thought I wouldn't get any more produce. I am hoping this is true for squash too! Guess I will try it on my round 2 squash just starting to produce.

    Love the seed saving! Been doing that alot lately. My uncle was up here from El Paso. He's in Arkansas right now visiting a half sister. I was trying to convince him to drive south after and visit your garden. If I could have gone with him, we would be stopping by to say hello! He grew a garden this year as well and the hours and days out in the heat, he lost 80 lbs! He feels so much better and is so motivated to keep gardening. ❤ You never know your influence and how infectious it can be for others!
