    Scotty is one of the last who knows how to build a Chesapeake Bay deadrise. Skilled craftsman there.

    As a “recovering Southerner” it always strikes me funny to hear different variations on the ole twang. I’d always hear that Tangiers and Smith boys had an “Elizabethan lilt” but I’d never heard it before personally. The way Scotty says words like night is very unique! Great job Scotty and Tim!

      Thank you for watching Sheila. It's kind of funny. I had a plan.... We were done discharging to ship and waiting to be released (paperwork). The sun was setting and I thought that if I could get back to the mooring, the sunset would be a great back drop. Well we ended getting released about 20 or 30 minutes later and the sun had set by the time I got to the mooring but thought we'd give it a go. I kind of like the colors that came out of it.

    Eklof's old Mary A. Whalen is a bunker tanker built in 1938. It is a bell boat with a 650 HP Fairbanks Morse Direct reversing engine. It is now a museum in Brooklyn.
    My favorite was docking at the cruise ship terminal the night before and going "up the street" when New York was real.

    Hi Tim. This was indeed a special treat and I learned a lot about crewing a barge. The barges that come into the River Tyne here in North East England carry legs (jackets?) for windfarm turbines to/from a company that fabricates them. As a result, the accommodation is below deck but those that bring in the large tubes used in the fabrication sometimes have container type cabins on deck. When fully loaded the barges draw about 5.5m. An overhead power line over the river adds an extra hazard depending on the weather and the state of the tide. Incidently, I have just started my own channel to show videos I am making of shipping in the Tyne; only two films so far but more already prepared. I am trying to add background music and some commentary but it is not easy to find Copyright Free music, although I have found some which I acknowledge at the end and in the description. The channel is called 'Norm TyneShips'. I now appreciate how much effort is put into editing! Thanks again for this one.

    Smith Islanders are a breed unique to themselves. I say that as a compliment. They were/are isolated from the mainland by miles of bay and marsh, and even their tie to the mainland is just a small seafood town in the middle of nowhere. Their accent is different from any others. Scotty seems like a likable enough guy. Thanks for sharing. TimB, have him bring you a cake from his island. They are a local favorite.

    I used to speak with a London accent, not real cockney but not finishing words and throwing in the odd rhyming slang. This I moderated when I started travelling around the world, so that others could understand. The tunneling industry employs guys from all over, accents are a part of working life, along with different ways again we all have to accept this and get along with co worked as best we can.
    I have no regrets other than shift work, we worked 12 hr. 7am to 7pm, with a meal break. 5 shifts per week. or 3 x 8hr shifts without a break. for 5 shifts, I suffered from depression when working the 12 hr. night shift, my doctor told me when working night to finish at 7am. travel home do some chores or hobby work till 10am. or so and go to bed, Get have a breakfast and go to work. The same as I would on day shift, this worked and I felt a lot happier.

In your early videos the sincerity you expressed about the concern for content quality of content and volume of content versus the costs you incurred to share that content, was heart felt. Now, you've discover Patreon revenue, maybe some TH-cam revenue and realized the value that presents in offsetting your costs. It shows...your eagerness for the added revenue stream, but in your case it is also clear, your interest is honest quality content...that's clearly exhibited also. Thanks for that. Now, the one thing you did perplex me about....you showed me I missed my calling in life....I shoulda been a tug captain...that checks all my boxes. 25 years as a tanker yanker, super B-train fuel hauler greater Toronto area...I watch your content and just sigh dejectedly. Tim I found your channel a few weeks ago and I've been catching up - and I've subbed. Your content is terrific because it is intelligent, interesting CONTENT, not a "show", and because it is so REAL - the editing & audio are a bit rough, and in my opinion that contributes to the sense of "this is how it is", rather than "Look how terrific I want you to think it is!". You are obviously not trying to produce the Tug version of The Deadliest Catch".....and you shouldn't! You are giving us a real look into a world we wouldn't otherwise be privy to. That's GOLD.
    I'm a NJ native who has lived in Japan for 20 years now. Your channel connects me to home and helps me to stay in touch with the feeling of being on the good ol' Raritan Bay, where I grew up.

    Tim , why are there bunker barges in the US rather than self propelled boats like in some other countries ? And do you always move barges or do you work with large ships some times as well?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching Marcus. I think most of the decisions made here are financially motivated. Engines are expensive and require a licensed and trained crew of 5 or more. Barges by being non propelled, don't need a crew. Also, it makes sense in one part of the world, but not as much in another because how each port works. For example, here in NYC, many if the docks we go to or come out of are what we call tide jobs. This means that because of the current, we can only go in or out at certain states of tide. Combine that with the 6 to 18 hours it may take to load or discharge and you will see that the barge spends most if it's time loading or discharging and very little time actually moving. So it make sense for companies here to invest in one Tugboat that may move 10 different barges in the time it would take for the first barge to load or discharge.
      The company I worked for 10 years ago did ship assist work, but the company I work for today does not. We do assist each other, but that's nothing like assisting a ship.
