I have followed the video and have made many many masks. Her instructions on the video are excellent and very very easy to follow. She also includes templates which are again very easy to download and print. This is the BEST video I have watched for mask making. Who needs written instructions when the video is so very very easy to follow

I've made close to 90 masks of various patterns for family, friends, elderly. I've tried many different styles, all with filters made from Filti material. I wanted a fittable nose piece, a filter pocket, no-gap fit and the mask should be high enough to help keep glasses from fogging. Either the filter pocket was hard to access or was too small to cover the mouth and nose. This is the best and easiest pattern by far. Fits like a glove without puckering under the chin or at the sides. It also fits up under my glasses (I used the XL pattern and a 1" fold for the elastic side channels instead of 1/2" so it wouldn't extend past my ears). My ears are too small to keep ear loops from slipping off with my glasses but it was easy to insert a 27" piece of elastic, run it through both side channels and convert it from ear loops to over the head and behind the neck fit. A tip. Iron over the ends before sewing around the curved piece so that you can sew them at the same time. It saves time. I've made hundreds of these and everyone loves them. Thank you for the video, it's very clear. x
My favorite mask to date!!! As added protection I sewed water resistant interfacing on the face lining (all four layers right side to right side) at once; turned and cut back the water resistant interfacing by 1/2 inch so it wouldn't show under the lining. Thank you for this! The easiest of all masks with much less fabric waste!

The best facemask pattern and the best clear instructions I have seen and heard. Will definitely share this. Thank you so much. Made six of these today in about 2 hours from start to finish. This might be slow for some but it does not matter as long as it gets done and I was so happy with it.

I'm so glad you made a larger version and a child's version. I love making this mask but the original pattern was, sadly, a tad too small for my face. I just printed it out, however, and it's really a lot larger than the original. I would love it if you could create one in-between the two. thanks
Happy to hear you like the larger and child version. I did make just a tad bit change to the original but not much in size. You might double check to make sure you are not printing the XL or XXl. here is the Adult size lelesdesigns.com/olsonmask2.pdf . If you need to make adjustment you can print at 90% if you need it smaller or print 110% to make it larger. Hope this helps.

I followed your video step by step and found it very easy to follow. The face mask turned out nicely, no pucker. I did find the regular size a tad too big for my face so will try decreasing the pattern size as you recommend. I also found the cheek portion too long for my face, and think I will shorten the ends by 1 inch. Thanks again for the great tutorial.
@@Lelesdesigns so just a followup. I did sew a mask at a 90 % decrease from the original size and it is a tad to small.....so today I'll try a decrease of 95 %. The nice thing is this takes very little time to whip up.

I did the same thing. On the last fold to insert elastic I folded over that 1" extra and works great! I like a little extra room over the nose & mouth after inserting a filter. Feels less suffocating that way.
Your teaching is excellent - very easy to understand. Great mask and thanks for free patterns. I found that the nose bridges break with just a little pressure and must be removed before washing. A friend left one in the mask and the glue stuck, the bridge broke and could not be removed. Just a heads-up.
Thank You so much! Yes I would suggest not putting these in the dryer if you are putting the nose bridge in. I hand wash mine and hang dry. Then I press them to kill any germs. Once in awhile I throw them in the wash. so far they have held up without any bridge broken. I do need to update this pattern to make it easier to take the nose piece out as there are some really cheap nose bridge on the market and not everyone has the time to hand wash. I would suggest to maybe stick the nose bridge on the outside for now. Thank You for your sweet comment and bringing this to my attention.

Your welcome! Sorry to hear the nose is frustrating. You might try sewing the front facing up and use a thread that matches the fabric this way it will blend in with the fabric.
When you cut around the pattern, do you leave extra space, or do you cut exactly to the size of the pattern? Sorry for asking, normal dressmaking rules are that you leave half an inch for turning but I am not sure if you did as it is not shown how you cut the fabric. Thank you
I thought I’d try your pattern. Wow it is so easy however I tried the XL but I had to trim the sides back by about 1/2” on the bottom because it was too low on the side. By doing this the mask fit perfectly. Thank you so much..the easiest pattern!
I did make it but it was too small. The chin part came up too high..guess I have a fat chin haha. No problem though I’ll give it to my daughter. It really was amazingly so easy to make. I have an order for 10 masks for my son in Yellowknife so I’m trying to hone the pattern for him. Thanks so much for your interest.
Yes, That is the great thing on the mask if it don't fit. You can always find someone to give it too. Glad to hear you figured out a way to make it work.
Thank you for the great pattern. I also needed a size between the regular and Xlarge, so I printed the Xlarge at 90 percent. That seems to work. I do something a little different for the nose piece. After doing the topstitching, I again stitch 1/4" to 3/8" from the topstitching. I like to do this second row on the reverse side to eliminate puckering. This creates a tube to insert the nosepiece. Works great. The wire is then removable if desired.
I made one of these but must have used the XL pattern by mistake - it was enormous on me! Going to try one of the smaller sizes - I really like the shape of it. It was just way too big on me

Thank you. I am a novice and have not tried an Olson mask yet. Your teaching video is excellent. Very clear and understandable. Great commentary! Helps so much better then annoying music. Anxious to try it. Could you suggest a way to modify so I could use the comfort elastic but go around the head rather than behind the ears like a standard respirator type mask. My ears get so sore. I did try a band to attach the ear elastic but that isn't ideal. Thank you again. Excellent!! \
You are so welcome! yes with this ear channel you will be able to use the elastic behind the head just run it though the hole then take it to the other side and run it though that ear channel. th-cam.com/video/FCQWA3Jtucw/w-d-xo.html in this video I show how to do that. which is the exact same pattern as this one. This is an updated version and shorter video.
I found a way to help the nose stand away from the face. You'll need small strips of Oly-Fun fabric. It's a polyurethane fabric that washes well. Anyway just cut a small strip about 1/2 wide (you can make it wider and then trim away too much excess) and I sew this right into the center curved seam. It provides a bit of stabilization that seems to help keep that seam from puckering and sticking to the face. I have used it on both the liner and the outer fabric. JoAnn fabrics might have this Oly-Fun fabric. You can also buy some at Amazon. Just a tip that might help someone else.
This sounds like a great tip. I am definitely going to try it as soon as I finish organizing my craft room. is it polypropylene or polyurethane? I have both.
Your pattern makes this mask so much easier to sew. (1) I find that the narrowest part of the Olson mask - top to bottom at the part where the ties attach - is too tall. The mask gathers instead of lying flat so I want to make it narrower at this point. (This gathering is obvious when you look at a picture of someone wearing the mask). Should I reduce the height at this point by taking away from the top or bottom or both? (2) When the mask cups the chin, it easily pulls down to uncover the nose, especially when talking. I think that it should be a bit less fitted under the chin. Your thoughts? Many thanks, Lele and others.
I bought the travel iron. Much easier than heating up my bigger iron which heats up my whole room. I’ve made several masks using this pattern. No kidding, this is the easiest and quickest method to make a GREAT fitting mask. Stay Safe everyone

It’s actually a better fit than the original Olsen Masks. Your tweaking has made this a perfect fit. I am so happy with this. I am shocked at a comment made by Angela Garnto. I was just wondering about making this just a touch larger. This is the only pattern I’ve used that allows me to wear glasses over the nose wire, preventing fogging. I told my brother I’d make him one, sooo...I’ll print the larger one. Thanks
I love your patterns and the mini iron! Perfect for masks and crafting projects. The travel iron saved the day when my daughter’s wedding veil did not travel well. Planning ahead I brought the iron and her wrinkled veil was no more. By any chance do you have a look for the blue pointer thingy you were using? I see it has a rubber like tip on one side and I can really use one of those to guide my fabric. Thanks for your videos and patterns!

This is a very nice and easy mask pattern. However, I made up two in the XL size for two large men. The sides go way up over the ears. Before fitting it to the man, I had to fold over the ends twice with a generous fold. After the one man tried it on, I had to take the sides apart and put in a pleat on each side to make the sides a little shorter, and then refolded twice. The face part of the mask is also very large and moves up and down when he talks. I will try again after I've altered the pattern some on the sides, and will probably take much larger seam allowances. I've made almost 200 masks, so I THINK I know what I'm doing. Just don't know what went wrong with this one.
Thank You! Have you tried to see if the lelesdesigns.com/olsonmask2.pdf mask fit him as that mask will fit some men as long as it covers the nose, mouth and chin you might have to add more elastic to it for him.
if the one that fits most don't fit. I just made a new size that is smaller than the XL you used. It is here lelesdesigns.com/olsonmaskxl2.pdf I think this should fit better if you are folding in the sides.

I think you can but I have not tried it. I would test it on some junky shirt first before cutting your favorite shirt. You might have to make it a tad bit smaller as knit will stretch so printing at 90% might work. The good is these take no time to make. For the test You should only have to make the front of the mask and sew the curve part then fold ends in and pin temporily. then check in the mirror to see if it fits before proceeding.

Before you placed the pink cloth for us to be able to see better, I noticed that you were using your iron on your quilt and press I may be wrong. If so, could you please tell me what kind of quilt and press that is?
Do you have a medium size pattern for this mask? Would you consider doing a video using directional fabric for these masks? Could you show how to cut the directional fabric out? I have a problem every time I use directional fabric. I have had to scrap a few masks due to the fabric going the wrong way. I get very frustrated with myself as I can't wrap my head around it. I really like this pattern, very easy to make. Your instruction is very clear and easy to follow.
I love that pink fabric you use as a table-top. And the very cute little iron, I saw that in another vid just today. This is the simplest mask design I've seen! I also love how you sew one then immediately start the next without even cutting the thread. Do you not need a backstitch or doesn't it matter? My mum bought real pipe cleaners from a tobacconist shop and they are longer and work really well as a nose stabilser.

Yes, You need a back stitch I mention in the beginning of the sewing that I cut out the the beginning and ending back stitch but now I think maybe others are missing where I stated that. next time I will leave the back stitch in the video. I found this breathable wearing on a airplane that was 3 hour flight. Total time wearing it 5 hours I did not use a filter as I have a hard time breathing with any mask. I just recently made this expandable one th-cam.com/video/GJe3fNVEaI8/w-d-xo.html but only tried it for 30 minutes which is a little easier to pull down. Though I think it is a matter of preference.

Great tutorial! Do you have a pattern for petite women? I have a very small face, but the child mask is too small and the next size up is way too big. I read through the comments looking for a similar question. My apologies if I missed it.
I just finished making my first mask using your pattern. Wow, so easy! What a great tutorial! I also found a solution to my sizing issue. When I printed out the pattern I decreased the scale by 10%. Worked perfectly!
Happy to hear this worked. Another thing if you made the first one and did not prewash the 100% cotton fabric. Maybe throw it the wash and dryer and see if if it fits better as it should shrink a little. Hopefully others will see your great idea and if anyone ask I will share you info. Thank You
Do these masks fit without puckering in middle. I have made several masks and they pucker right around the mouth. I've sewn straight down thru middle which helps. Now have about quarter-size pucker. The pleated masks do not do this but then they are not rated as high. I prefer this type. It's driving my OCD brain crazy. I wish I was an engineer. Any suggestions?
I'm sorry these video take so much time. You could follow along with most of the video. You will need to sew the nose bridge and topstitch with a sewing machine or hand sew it.

Hi Lisa. Thank you for an amazing tutorial. Could you please guide me how I can size the pattern for my grand daughters age 10 and almost 13. I read in another tutorial of yours to resize the pattern but am having difficulty deciding what percentage to increase the child’s pattern in this video. Also not sure what size and length elastic I should use. Thank you so much.
Your Welcome! It is really difficult to determine the size without seeing the face. My granddaughter is 9 and she has a wider face and the adult size fits her. My guess would be the adult size. The child size pattern will probably be too small. If your looking for a custom fit. I would suggest making 1 adult and determining if you need to make it smaller. If you do then print at 95% - 90% or how much you think will work. For the elastic follow my instructions toward the end of the video where you use a safety pin to determine the size. If you are sending out of town then just send them the elastic separate and have them put it in.

Sorry Debbie did not see this message. It stinks I am only notified when I get a brand new message. I have to dig though to find these. Happy to hear this was faster for you. For the child size 8-12 I would try printing the adult at 90% You might have to adjust depending on width of face.
When you sew thevquarter in border at top, it gives you enough room to slide the nose pcs in and then you just so on each end to keep nose pcs from coming out.
Thank You for your input. I do these steps as some of my viewers are beginners and if they are off a tad bit it won't fit. So it easier for me to have them go though this step instead them texting me it didn't work and they have to pull out the top stitch.
I prefer making the metal nose piece removable, so I don't sew the ends closed. Additionally, before adding the channel for the nose piece, I also topstitch about 1/8" (rather than 1/4") from the edges of the mask and topstitch BEFORE folding the ends over & making the channels for the elastic; that way, the topstitching is continuous to the ends of the mask. After doing the topstitching, I then add stitching for the nose wire/metal; stitching for a length of approximately 2" on each side of the center, then insert the wire. (No concerns of accidentally hitting the nose piece when topstitching either.) :)
Are the nose pieces going to be okay going through a wash? I believe I purchased the same ones and have been trying to figure out if I need to make the mask to where it can be removed prior to washing.
The nose bridge is made of Aluminum so it will not rust. I believe they have a clear coating on them to protect from corrosion. I wash mine several times and had no problem.
I have made A LOT of these and make them so the nose bridge is removable for washing because I found they just get all bent out of shape during washing.

Hi Dana, it might be your firewall or AntiVirus blocking your computer, printer or WiFi. I have not heard any other customer experienced this and my site is verified and secure. I also just tested my phone ipad and computer and was able to print with no issue. If I email it to you. You would run into the same problem. I did google it and this is what I found "Your PDF files may also corrupt if you view them online directly instead of downloading them first".

You might double check to make sure you are not printing the XL or XXl. here is the Adult size lelesdesigns.com/olsonmask2.pdf . If you need to make adjustment you can print at 90% if you need it smaller or print 110% to make it larger. Hope this helps.

I followed your video step by step and found it very easy to follow. The face mask turned out nicely, no pucker. I did find the regular size a tad too big for my face so will try decreasing the pattern size as you recommend. I also found the cheek portion too long for my face, and think I will shorten the ends by 1 inch. Thanks again for the great tutorial.

@@Lelesdesigns so just a followup. I did sew a mask at a 90 % decrease from the original size and it is a tad to small.....so today I'll try a decrease of 95 %. The nice thing is this takes very little time to whip up.

I did the same thing. On the last fold to insert elastic I folded over that 1" extra and works great! I like a little extra room over the nose & mouth after inserting a filter. Feels less suffocating that way.

Your teaching is excellent - very easy to understand. Great mask and thanks for free patterns. I found that the nose bridges break with just a little pressure and must be removed before washing. A friend left one in the mask and the glue stuck, the bridge broke and could not be removed. Just a heads-up.
Thank You so much! Yes I would suggest not putting these in the dryer if you are putting the nose bridge in. I hand wash mine and hang dry. Then I press them to kill any germs. Once in awhile I throw them in the wash. so far they have held up without any bridge broken. I do need to update this pattern to make it easier to take the nose piece out as there are some really cheap nose bridge on the market and not everyone has the time to hand wash. I would suggest to maybe stick the nose bridge on the outside for now. Thank You for your sweet comment and bringing this to my attention.

Instead of clipping the curves I used my pinking shears and for the nose part I used a zipper foot and worked really good

When you cut around the pattern, do you leave extra space, or do you cut exactly to the size of the pattern? Sorry for asking, normal dressmaking rules are that you leave half an inch for turning but I am not sure if you did as it is not shown how you cut the fabric. Thank you

I thought I’d try your pattern. Wow it is so easy however I tried the XL but I had to trim the sides back by about 1/2” on the bottom because it was too low on the side. By doing this the mask fit perfectly. Thank you so much..the easiest pattern!

I did make it but it was too small. The chin part came up too high..guess I have a fat chin haha. No problem though I’ll give it to my daughter. It really was amazingly so easy to make. Thank you for the great pattern. I also needed a size between the regular and Xlarge, so I printed the Xlarge at 90 percent. That seems to work. I do something a little different for the nose piece. After doing the topstitching, I again stitch 1/4" to 3/8" from the topstitching. I like to do this second row on the reverse side to eliminate puckering. This creates a tube to insert the nosepiece. Works great. The wire is then removable if desired.

I made one of these but must have used the XL pattern by mistake - it was enormous on me! Going to try one of the smaller sizes - I really like the shape of it. It was just way too big on me

Anxious to try it. Could you suggest a way to modify so I could use the comfort elastic but go around the head rather than behind the ears like a standard respirator type mask. My ears get so sore. I did try a band to attach the ear elastic but that isn't ideal. Thank you again. Excellent!!

You are so welcome! yes with this ear channel you will be able to use the elastic behind the head just run it though the hole then take it to the other side and run it though that ear channel. th-cam.com/video/FCQWA3Jtucw/w-d-xo.html in this video I show how to do that. which is the exact same pattern as this one. This is an updated version and shorter video.
I found a way to help the nose stand away from the face. You'll need small strips of Oly-Fun fabric. It's a polyurethane fabric that washes well. Anyway just cut a small strip about 1/2 wide (you can make it wider and then trim away too much excess) and I sew this right into the center curved seam. It provides a bit of stabilization that seems to help keep that seam from puckering and sticking to the face. I have used it on both the liner and the outer fabric. JoAnn fabrics might have this Oly-Fun fabric. You can also buy some at Amazon. Just a tip that might help someone else.
This sounds like a great tip. I am definitely going to try it as soon as I finish organizing my craft room. is it polypropylene or polyurethane? I have both.

Your pattern makes this mask so much easier to sew. (1) I find that the narrowest part of the Olson mask - top to bottom at the part where the ties attach - is too tall. The mask gathers instead of lying flat so I want to make it narrower at this point. (This gathering is obvious when you look at a picture of someone wearing the mask). Should I reduce the height at this point by taking away from the top or bottom or both? (2) When the mask cups the chin, it easily pulls down to uncover the nose, especially when talking. I think that it should be a bit less fitted under the chin. Your thoughts? Many thanks, Lele and others.

I was just wondering about making this just a touch larger. This is the only pattern I’ve used that allows me to wear glasses over the nose wire, preventing fogging. I told my brother I’d make him one, sooo...I’ll print the larger one. Thanks

I love your patterns and the mini iron! Perfect for masks and crafting projects. The travel iron saved the day when my daughter’s wedding veil did not travel well. Planning ahead I brought the iron and her wrinkled veil was no more. By any chance do you have a look for the blue pointer thingy you were using? This is a very nice and easy mask pattern. However, I made up two in the XL size for two large men. The sides go way up over the ears. Before fitting it to the man, I had to fold over the ends twice with a generous fold. After the one man tried it on, I had to take the sides apart and put in a pleat on each side to make the sides a little shorter, and then refolded twice. The face part of the mask is also very large and moves up and down when he talks. I will try again after I've altered the pattern some on the sides, and will probably take much larger seam allowances. I've made almost 200 masks, so I THINK I know what I'm doing. Just don't know what went wrong with this one.
Thank You! Have you tried to see if the lelesdesigns.com/olsonmask2.pdf mask fit him as that mask will fit some men as long as it covers the nose, mouth and chin you might have to add more elastic to it for him.
if the one that fits most don't fit. I just made a new size that is smaller than the XL you used. It is here lelesdesigns.com/olsonmaskxl2.pdf I think this should fit better if you are folding in the sides.

I think you can but I have not tried it. I would test it on some junky shirt first before cutting your favorite shirt. You might have to make it a tad bit smaller as knit will stretch so printing at 90% might work. The good is these take no time to make. For the test You should only have to make the front of the mask and sew the curve part then fold ends in and pin temporily. then check in the mirror to see if it fits before proceeding.

Do you have a medium size pattern for this mask? Would you consider doing a video using directional fabric for these masks? Could you show how to cut the directional fabric out? I have a problem every time I use directional fabric. I have had to scrap a few masks due to the fabric going the wrong way. I get very frustrated with myself as I can't wrap my head around it. I really like this pattern, very easy to make. Your instruction is very clear and easy to follow.

This is the simplest mask design I've seen! I also love how you sew one then immediately start the next without even cutting the thread. Do you not need a backstitch or doesn't it matter?
My mum bought real pipe cleaners from a tobacconist shop and they are longer and work really well as a nose stabilser.

I found this breathable wearing on a airplane that was 3 hour flight. Total time wearing it 5 hours I did not use a filter as I have a hard time breathing with any mask. I just recently made this expandable one th-cam.com/video/GJe3fNVEaI8/w-d-xo.html but only tried it for 30 minutes which is a little easier to pull down. Though I think it is a matter of preference.

I just finished making my first mask using your pattern. Wow, so easy! What a great tutorial! I also found a solution to my sizing issue. When I printed out the pattern I decreased the scale by 10%. Worked perfectly!
Happy to hear this worked. Another thing if you made the first one and did not prewash the 100% cotton fabric. Maybe throw it the wash and dryer and see if if it fits better as it should shrink a little. Hopefully others will see your great idea and if anyone ask I will share you info. Thank You
Do these masks fit without puckering in middle. I have made several masks and they pucker right around the mouth. I've sewn straight down thru middle which helps. Now have about quarter-size pucker. The pleated masks do not do this but then they are not rated as high. I prefer this type. It's driving my OCD brain crazy. I wish I was an engineer. Any suggestions?
It might depend on how tight or loose you have the ears. I get very little pucker if any on mine but I have it a little more snugged

Hi Lisa. Thank you for an amazing tutorial. Could you please guide me how I can size the pattern for my grand daughters age 10 and almost 13. I read in another tutorial of yours to resize the pattern but am having difficulty deciding what percentage to increase the child’s pattern in this video. Also not sure what size and length elastic I should use. Thank you so much.
Your Welcome! It is really difficult to determine the size without seeing the face. My granddaughter is 9 and she has a wider face and the adult size fits her. My guess would be the adult size. The child size pattern will probably be too small. If your looking for a custom fit. I would suggest making 1 adult and determining if you need to make it smaller. If you do then print at 95% - 90% or how much you think will work. For the elastic follow my instructions toward the end of the video where you use a safety pin to determine the size. If you are sending out of town then just send them the elastic separate and have them put it in.

7" -8" inches usually a 4"-5" ear loop is good for kids

If I stretched it would be 8" on bottom and top is about 8 1/2"

What kind of fabric did you use for the liner or the white fabric?
I used 100% cotton
When you sew thevquarter in border at top, it gives you enough room to slide the nose pcs in and then you just so on each end to keep nose pcs from coming out.
Thank You for your input. I do these steps as some of my viewers are beginners and if they are off a tad bit it won't fit. So it easier for me to have them go though this step instead them texting me it didn't work and they have to pull out the top stitch.

I prefer making the metal nose piece removable, so I don't sew the ends closed. Additionally, before adding the channel for the nose piece, I also topstitch about 1/8" (rather than 1/4") from the edges of the mask and topstitch BEFORE folding the ends over & making the channels for the elastic; that way, the topstitching is continuous to the ends of the mask. After doing the topstitching, I then add stitching for the nose wire/metal; stitching for a length of approximately 2" on each side of the center, then insert the wire. (No concerns of accidentally hitting the nose piece when topstitching either.) :)

Are the nose pieces going to be okay going through a wash? I believe I purchased the same ones and have been trying to figure out if I need to make the mask to where it can be removed prior to washing.
The nose bridge is made of Aluminum so it will not rust. I believe they have a clear coating on them to protect from corrosion. I wash mine several times and had no problem.

I cannot find the instructions for the mask...I have printed out the pattern. Thank you, plz cause I need help!

I have downloaded your child sized pattern on multiple devices and it says I can't print it because it is corrupted. Can you send me the pattern? My child starts Pre-K on Monday and I want her to have 10 masks with filters. Can you help me?
Hi Dana, it might be your firewall or AntiVirus blocking your computer, printer or WiFi. I have not heard any other customer experienced this and my site is verified and secure. I also just tested my phone ipad and computer and was able to print with no issue. If I email it to you. You would run into the same problem. I did google it and this is what I found "Your PDF files may also corrupt if you view them online directly instead of downloading them first".
