My first olson mask was too big for me. This video was so helpful. I am a complete beginner and I can't believe it worked. It's annoying that you won't really know if the modified pattern is right until you finish the final product. I was like... This looks too small..... Oh well, let's just do what Gail says..... I put on the original olson mask and I measured the extra fabric on my face. I took off a bit over half an inch in length and half inch in width. The pattern looked significantly smaller, but after making the new mask, it came up right for my face!

Awesome and definitely informative! So many instructors (not all) seem to make resizing complicated, like they’re not wanting to give away any secrets.
So helpful! I kept trying to redraw the mask template with the larger size where I "thought" the increases should be and kept getting frustrated. Also, great tip for practicing with the poly blends first than cutting into my cotton fabrics.
Thank you! I started mask making about two months ago with the Olson, which I like as an overal construction, but in my opinion not a great fit nor has attractive shaped curves. I then downloaded dozens of other patterns in all shapes and designs with some success but not happy with one detail or another. So, I have since come back to the Olson to adjust. Your tutorial was EXTREMELY HELPFUL! Thanks again!
Oh I totally hear ya! my personal favorite was the 10 by 8 rectangle however the top of the mask came too close to my eyes
what I don't like about the Olson mask is the needle holes through the center of the mask this could be letting in particles this way.
I am hoping that using the stretch chiffon what she recommends in her most recent video that the needle holes actually won't be holes if that makes any sense
my filter will be a solid piece so that should solve that problem but I'm not going to make the filter pocket and the cheek pieces just too much fabric. I will be attaching the filter with either the double-sided Wonder tape or the Lite steam a seam which is only permanent if you iron it on

Thank you. I added a little bottom point and a little length close to the front. Hopefully this time I'll end up with something that goes just slightly under my chin instead of right at it, won't get sucked into my mouth, and will have enough slack to make a nose wire extend through part of the cheeks so I don't get steam blowing up into my eyes. Maybe I should make another mock-up with the length added past instead of at the top point to achieve less chance of fabric in my mouth, without compromising effectiveness. Anyway, this beginning sewer thanks you. My mom made most of my masks, and I only have four, so this is the first one I'm making.

The combination of glasses and a somewhat prominent nose means my the top of my nose HURTS after wearing a mask. But I also have a small head. This would help. My husband's face is too big for XL masks in stores. This technique will help both of us. Thanks!

I have made multiple "prototypes" in an effort to ensure fit. Have you worked with a style that makes a deeper dip from the nose to lower on the cheek? I have thought it might help with staying closer to my check and below my glasses. Thoughts?
I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago, but am thrilled to have found your information and teaching. I haven't sewn in years so appreciate your careful instructions including the reasons for your decisions. I am very aware that without fit, the mask is simply a decoration and comfort is a major factor in safety.
I would just go ahead and take your scissors and cut a deeper profile from the nose point down as low as you wish to go and then over to the cheek corner. So instead of having a more gradual curve you will have more of the ski jump curve.make sure you have the same profile on your mouthpiece and cheek pieces as well. This is one situation where cutting the perimeter actually works pretty well.

Thank YOU for sharing! Recently I received a free pattern for a FM and I made several masks, instead of making a sample first. The masks were all too small. 😩, I’m sorry I hadn’t seen your fantastic video before I started, but I can now go back to making the right size for myself and my sisters....we are not all ‘One size fits all’.
I am also confused as to which section is the nose and which is the chin on the pattern. Please me id which is which. Thanks again❣️
If you are looking at the words the top of the curved line above the words is the nose and the bottom of the curved line below the words is the chin. I hope that helps.

Thanks for sharing this information! I had to alter a mask because it didn't cover the chin enough and I just extended the bottom cut line by 1". I now see that probably wasn't the right way to do it.
If you wanted to know if a pattern needed to be altered before sewing, what are the areas to measure on the face? How would those measurements be compared to the pattern to make the alterations in the correct area(s) of the pattern?

Yes, glad you asked, bc I need that info too. Making masks for relatives in other states and mailing them. Really need a way for them to just measure their faces and send me the info. Please let me know the answer to this if any of you find out 😍

I had my mother's care worker just measure from the bridge of her nose down to her chin. And then I had her measure from the center of her nose to just in front of the ear
you could also ask them to take a measurement from the bridge of the nose to the tip of the nose. that would give you an idea whether or not you needed to make the adjustment higher up or down towards the chin
I think if you follow her most recent video where she is using the stretch chiffon that will allow for some measurements that might be off a little bit

I wish so too, but have found that it is not just the measurements, but the proportions of the face and the angle/ tilt of the nose and chin that also bear on the way its worn and the comfort of the final result. Please let me know if you have an epiphany for a formula or golden measurement that predicts final wearing comfort for many faces. Thanks!

If you need more space near the chin perhaps you want to redraw the curved centerline profile. I might start where the nose is most curvy and then just follow that down a little bit more straight before curving back in for the chin point. That will probably give you more three-dimensional space. I hope that makes sense. Good luck and happy sewing!
Thank you so much. I was happy with the fit of my mask (after much fiddling with the pattern) but couldn't get the area where the elastic goes not to bunch up. I was resizing that area all wrong. Now it fits perfectly without any gaps or bunching.

@Gail Kollmar This was an excellent explanation on resizing a mask. I'm a novice and have been trying to learn to sew masks.
The one thing my "guinea pigs" ask for is more breathing room, they want it not so close to the mouth... if that makes sense. Could you tell me how I should resize the pattern to accomplish that?
I would definitely start with the “Getting Started Enlarged Mask Pattern” that is linked below the video for download. Perhaps that will work just fine. If not, then you will have a better idea of how to adjust from there for a perfect fit. Please let me know how that works out.

Brilliant! And just what I needed as so many family members have different shaped faces! Question tho. I will be modifying your original Olson mask pattern and have taken nose to chin and nose to ear measurements of each family member. How do I find what the nose to chin and nose to ear measurements are on your original Olson pattern pieces so I know how much to alter them? Also...thanks so very much for the most recent video on a cooler mask! That will be my next project!
The original Unity Point Health Olson Mask pattern is linked below the video. Make sure you print to scale (the gauge block will measure 1” if printed properly). You can just measure the pattern pieces between the dotted seam lines for the finished size nose to chin. You can subtract about an inch on each side of the cheek for the elastic channels. @@gailkollmar8174 in a way that was one of my questions so I guess you have to put the paper pattern up to your face.
I'm thinking that now that we will be using the silkystretch chiffon that may help with making generic masks or being a little bit off on measurements for friends or family
I do think that the stretch chiffon with the knit hem fits a variety of faces better than the cotton. I think that little bit of stretch helps and then the different straps help a lot too!
So to be clear, if I want a finished length of say 16cms (nose to under chin) I measure this final measurement from dotted line to dotted line? Many thanks for a great video🙏🏻
