    Not a good example really. The woman on the left isn't forced to wear what she's wearing. She had the freedom to choose what to wear whereas the woman on the right is wearing what's required for her to wear based on her political ideology. The question is, would the woman on the right choose to wear what she is wearing if not for the religion imposed on her?

      are you saying that muslims are forced to wear the Hijab? Islam has NEVER forced a woman on something like that, infact, islam FORBIDS forcing a woman to wear a scarf, and it states that woman should only wear it if they're 100% aware of why they should wear it and WANT to wear it. Yes we do beleve that there are circumstances for those who decide to not wear it, however it is wrong to force a woman to wear these type of clothes. Do not draw your own conclusions on something you are not aware of.

      Why is it normal for girls to walk half naked, but if a girl is full covered it's wrong. Even if i was given the option to not wear a scarf, i wouldn't feel comfortable wearing something as revealing as this. There are people who treasure their PRIVACY, and i am one of those people, in my OPINION.

      Islam actually denies the reality any value higher than Islam itself. Islam essentially acts as a substitute God because it is presented as the will of God for all mankind for all time. Religion, as normally conceived, regards the will of God, outside a few general moral injunctions, as a matter for each individual to discover. In Islam, the “will of God” is a set of rules governing the most minute and personal aspects of behavior. The individual is sacrificed at every stage of his life for the sake of Islam. All of life is thought to be a test of the willingness to sacrifice happiness (which means, in effect, the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty) for a promise of life in the hereafter. The exercise of individual freedom and the pursuit of value through either the questioning of Islam or leaving Islam are both viewed as treason and are punishable by death. That way, ideas dangerous to Islam are not spread among the collective - which is often described as one body. In Islam the collective is always elevated above the individual. The rough edges of individuality must be suppressed in order that Islamic society will run smoothly. We can see quite clearly that for women, at least in public, individuality is entirely erased by the veil.

    • @HammerheadGuitar
      @HammerheadGuitar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@akilfletcher4157 No ethnocentrism is the opposite of cultural relativism. Ethnocentrism means that we judge people of other cultures based on our culture, cultural relativism is when you refuse to hold people of other cultures to the standards of your culture. So cultural relativism tells us that throwing gays of buildings, slavery and genocide are okay as long as the people doing it are from a different culture.

    Serious question here. Judging someone in light of the cause and effect they've experienced within their particular culture...sounds healthy and correct. But since CULTURES ARE MADE OF IDEAS, and not all ideas are equally painful/less, aren't some cultures better than others? Thx.

    Cultures are not all equal. There are simple ways to determine which cultures are better than others. We can and should judge cultures. The British judged and stopped the practice of Sati in India. The West African cultural practice of abandoning new born baby twins in the forest to die should be judged and criticized. Lets stop pretending that there is no way to tell which practices are better and offer better results. Your feelings are getting in the way of your logic.

    • @cecib91

      The problem is that we cannot step outside our own culture, so inevitably, even if we try our best to be impartial, we are always judging cultures from the point of view of our own, which is just one among many.
      This doesn't mean that everything should be considered acceptable, though, but maybe we could try to adress this issue in a different way. Instead of saying "this culture is better than the other" we could simply say "well, we consider this practice to be wrong an unacceptable, even considered its cultural background, so we are going to banish it or act against it".
      My point is: there is really no need to judge other cultures in order to stop things from happening.

    There certainly is some truth to your example of how the two women are judging each other based on their own cultural beliefs. The example is maybe a little bit exaggerated, but it gets your point across. I just wanted to add that these two different viewpoints could also exist between members of the same culture. The fact that people tend to compare others actions and decisions to their own is undeniable, but the problem I have with cultural relativism is that it tries too hard to generalize and group people into specific cultures and determine what the shared beliefs of that culture are. For example, you say how people in France drink wine with almost every meal, yet there most certainly is people in France who do not drink wine at all.
    I understand that you are just trying to make a point to explain what Cultural Relativism is, but I think your examples would be a little bit more realistic if they didn't generalize people's beliefs quite so much.

    Its wrong to say French do that. It happens but it is very rare and limited. When parents do that is because they are letting the kids explore and taking a small sip NOT drinking a whole bottle or glass. Please don t think that French people do that...every country in Europe could be doing it. Italians and Spanish also produce wine. Also saying all french drink wine with lunch and diner is also wrong. Drinking wine with food is common when it is enjoyable...don t generalize like that because it sounds like you could also say all french wear marine t shirt and berret, ride a bike with a baguette under their arms and garlic on their back. And before you ask yes I am French

    I really like the comic. Male tendency to attempt to control access to women and thereby optimize their reproductive success is extremely prevalent; however, the behaviors depicted in the comic do represent different attitudes towards women. If a woman is flaunting her skin she is soliciting the attention of males and inviting competition amongst suitors although one could argue that she is also lowering her value as if males know that she does this they may be less inclined to make a paternal investment. On the other hand, the islamic woman is in a society wherein women are prescribed much more modest clothing towards to the opposite end.

    • @tmjcbs
      @tmjcbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The comic suggests a sort of 'it doesn't really matter, it's equally right'. I would say the amount of freedom a western woman has is much greater than that of a muslim woman.
      OK, some young western women may feel forced to wear a bikini, but that's nowhere near as 'forced' as muslim women are to wear traditional clothing. And that's only talking about clothing, what about the choice what to do with your life and who to marry...

    Those who promote cultural relativism are complicit in all the atrocities done in the name of irrational traditions, such as female genital mutilation, honor killings, and religious persecution of religious minorities in Muslim majority countries. They are also complicit in the political persecution of dissidents by authoritarian governments who claim cultural relativism as a motivation for not following international human rights standards, such as the People's Republic of China.
