Smithy and his minions could come back because you have the Machine Mades which are basically Smithy's minions in clone bodies and yes they do retain their memories. Mack when scanned as a Machine Made says "Mario I'm baaaack." Also when scanning Yaridovitch he says the same thing his original counterpart did "My promotion is at stake." So basically Smithy would just implant his memories in a new body and presto Smithy returns. Heck in the boiler room that supposedly powers the entire factory you see numerous Smithy heads meaning that Smithy may have been prepared for a failure so he created backup robot bodies to upload his data in case he was defeated.
Super Mario RPG is one of my favourite games: funny story, incredible battles, the fantastic SNES graphic and much more! I liked over all Smithy and Culex: in general, I like Mario games where Bowser goes with Mario against another boss!
