I’m playing viola once again after 6 years of not playing!! I’ve missed it so much and definitely have to relearn some things. This was helpful and straight to the point, I love it!
I think this is a great explanation especially for someone who switches from violin to viola. When I get some students who want to switch, I'll point them here 😁
Thank you for what you do. I know this video is three years old but I just bought a viola to play with my little sister so she has someone to play with. I played drums growing up so needles to say the finesse of a viola is out of my comfort zone but there is nothing I wouldn't do for her. It's humbling having to start back at the beginning and struggle to move forward and improve. One step at a time
I've been struggling to learn how to read alto clef and seeing it all in different colours is so helpful I will draw it out on a piece of paper. Thank you so much! Now I have a way to memorise it better. Essentially if you see a note (e.g. G the first open space) its actually one whole tone from an F on treble clef, same with the F, its in the open space of the C clef instead of on the top line. So that way, all notes are shifted up by 1 whole space. That makes it so much easier to learn! Thank you so much.
Back after a hiatus with learning the alto as a first-time adult. Thank you so much for a quick and clear reference guide. Those chords played on two strings were so BEAUTIFUL. Thanks again!
Thank you I play violin but got a viola 7 months ago and was playing it by ear this really helped and you explained every thing perfectly. Thanks soi much you made readying the music much easier!
Thanks so much for this! I played the viola through high school but I haven't touched it since (nearly 15 years ago O.O) and I recently picked it up and would like to try and play again so this was a good refresher for me!
So helpful! Thank you! I play violin and thought reading viola notes were hard, but one lesson from you has really made it clear! I’m ready to pick up that viola!😀
I have a question, she plays the scale on two octaves but there is still space on the neck, are there positions to play the scale in higher pitch ? Thanks :D
thank you so much for this simple and straight forward explanation. I started writing a string quartet piece back in the late 80s when I was around 19 and I've set it aside for all these years for lack of inspiration and being busy raising a family. I picked it up again now and want to finish it, I was very familiar with treble and bass cleff notation, but didn't know the details about the viola part. Heck, I didn't even know about the alto cleff. Now I think I'll be able to get it done. Maybe it'll evolve into an orchestra piece. Your viola has such a beautiful rich tone and your smiles are contagious.
Hi, this is a great explanation, but I'm wondering why you've made it so playback on other websites is not allowed? I want to share it with my students, but my school district has banned TH-cam due to the ads. I have to imbed videos into Google Slides and share them that way, but I can't with your video. Thanks!

Yes you can, but switching positions can get confusing for a beginner
This was so very helpful. Thank you so much 💖
This was amazing, Thank you!
You should make your students write down what string they wish to know first and play all 4notes in that string and then move to the next note🙂
Thank you so much!
Wonderful. I’m an adult beginner. Do you offer lessons via Zoom?
