In 1970 I attended my first road race at Laguna. I was 15 yo and didn't have a driver's license and took a bus to the race track. The AMC Javelin with Mark Donohue was my favorite race car.

Owned a 69 and later in life a 70 Boss 302. Great cars. Raised in Souther California so Parnelli. Jones was no stranger to me. Great series.

Hall was a Chevy man that knew his advantages. Good to see him win...

Mark Donahue and Peter Revson as teammates driving Javelins for Roger Penske
It didn’t get any better than that
    A special time for sure!!

What engine was used in those Javlins?

      @@TD-ce5ru They ran the 390 in 1970

Was that a Ford made 390 or did American motors have their own 390.

      @@TD-ce5ru
AMC V8 engines of the era were by AMC..all had the same external dimensions, they were available in 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, and 401 cubic inch displacements.
They ran a 304 cid engine (due to the 5.0 liter class limit) that was based on the stronger 390/401 block.
They literally had no relation to the Ford 390..AMC's engine was closer to a small block Chevy in external dimensions and weight.

So was the cylinder bore all the same and they just changed stroke, or was the bore different on each. I lived the muscle car era, but I paid little attention to AMC.

Ahhh. The last of the real American Auto Racing. I was a boy with a year or two before I got my drivers license. Watch as the pony cars of Detroit punched it out on road courses across America. Today’s racing is just so sanitized and corrupted with big money. Then as you can see in this video. Raw talent and shoestring budgets brought out the best racing ever. SCCA Trans-Am racing was a nitch in time. Now all we have are the memories of what was an awesome time to witness live in real time. When Detroit ruled and young boys dreamed of owning a piece of that pie. I lived in NASCAR country NC. But even I understood what a great platform SCCA had.

That's great to hear of your memories of that special era. I was only six years old in 1970 , and living in New Zealand, so I knew nothing of the Trans Am series at that time. But in NZ we had the same sort of racing, with 1960's and early seventies Camaro's, mustang's, etc ? ,well into the 1970's, and despite not having direct contact with this racing, and very little of it on TV , somehow I just knew about what was going on . I recommend checking out on TH-cam, the current muscle car racing in Australia and NZ , "Touring car masters " in Australia, and "Central muscle cars" in New Zealand. The cars are, old , Mustang's, Camaros, a couple of Challenger's, a Cuda , Falcon's, Comet's, ect , modified with modern NASCAR type high horsepower engines, modern brakes, steering etc .They race very hard , and plenty of damage is done .🙂

Man that was some great footage. I'm a PJ fan and Boss 302 fan. I was 10 then 'Jones won the SCCA championship in 69 and 70. Though Donahue was no less a driver.

Good to see a Camaro winning in 1970 since Penske switched with Javelin that year. I attended the Mont-Tremblant race this same year.

Parnelli Jones. The best all around driver of ALL time. He drove Transam. NASCAR. Indy . Drag cars. Off road. Grand national boats.

You can really see how the changes to the 70 Javelin's suspension really shine. This was done even before Donahue's/Penske's team took over the car.

The sound must have been unbelievable! 20 or more little nasty V8 small blocks pushing way over 400hp, unmuffled, and the throttle pushed through the firewall...
Nothing could've sounded better ever, except for Nascar big Blocks maybe?!?

On a race car, who on the wide world of W.T.F. would think different diameter tires would work other than some guy that thinks a different tire ratio would work? Other than a speedway course?

We loved the 'Cuda with its 2 year old engine design. While the Ford's & Chevy's had decades of research.the MOPAR's had to compete with a new small V8 being the 340....or 302 in the racecar. It had oil issues. Still, that was the most beautiful car making the Mustang & Camaro look like grandma cars. Basically....Ford & GM had the ugliest commoner cars.....while the "Cuda was the hottie with the best looking lines.

    • @zrxdoug
      @zrxdoug ปีที่แล้ว +2

Maybe..until a Javelin pulled up next door and made the 'cuda look all clown shoes by comparison.
