As a former race driver I've been on this track, with the old layout, many times and the one turn I seemed to always have a problem with, was turn 2. It seemed to have a slight off camber towards the outside of the turn. In my personal opinion, Parnelli Jones (same last name as mine) was a "driver's driver". Very aggressive and relentless during the whole race. He never lets up. A true professional race driver.

Thanks for sharing, Sir....P.J.? (no P.J. must've been too young).
As an European with monopoly TV broadcasting right up to late eighties in my country and only sparse news from the other side of the pond by the time (unless doing a real effort digging up on own hand), it was really first round last Riverside show my eyes really opened for the great american sports car series.
Myself visited modern Laguna Seca back in 2001, the old layout I've only enjoyed through simracing, however better than nothing.
Raced lower class sports cars snd Reynard SF '84, I can imagine the blast throwing big blocks round the old layout. I envy you.

I’m glad you had the opportunity to race at such a great track.
      Thanks for sharing your insight.
Watching film from the golden years is a true pleasure, and you lived it - cool.

@193322009 . . . I was there for the 1969 Trans Am race when Parnelli dominated the field in his Bud Moore Mustang . . . that is until he blew up the transmission. The race was won by Mark Donohue in a Penske prepared Camaro.
In the 1970 Trans Am race, Parnelli walked away from the field to an easy victory.
Supposedly, Mario Andretti was quoted to saying that when Jones's car was set up right, he was unbeatable . . . in any race car.

This was great! I first attended Laguna in 1970. Cool to see what it looked like just a few years earlier. Great Can-Am racing. PJ was a hot shoe.

Great stuff!!! I always treasure seeing footage from just about any racing in the 60s, but having gone to Laguna Seca regularly from 88 to 02, it's a real treat to see how it was before my time. Would have loved to have been at this event!

Phil Hill won on aggregate. Great film! Thanks for posting! Jim Hall built spaceships while the others were building race cars! 👍

Absolutely insane grid 😮 several champions, multiple innovators, some of the purist drivers to touch a steering wheel

Whenever the announcer says John SirTEASE it sounds like he runs a risque dancing club.

I don't understand what race this actually was. 1966 Laguna Seca Can Am was not won by Parnelli. He is my all time favorite driver. I have raced on the old laguna track and the new. The old one was so much better.

In the two-heat format, the winner was the driver with the best combined finish. Phil Hill won the overall victory (Chaparral's only Can-Am victory), based on finishing first and third in the two heats, with Jim Hall second in both. I guess Hill winning the first heat was the tie-breaker between those two. Jones dropped out of the first heat, so even winning the second heat wasn't enough for him to win the overall event. None of this was explained in the film, of course...
