This is an interesting video from David Goyer (screenwriter of Blade and Batman Begins).
Goyer has some interesting advice for screenwriters. The first is that screenwriters nowadays really don’t need to go to film school, it’s not necessary, especially with access to the Internet and all the free resources and information that you can get nowadays.
After Goyer started screenwriting, he said it took him about five years before he actually “got it” and understood the craft and how to make a screenplay work.
So what about Goyer’s writing process and how does he work?
When he was writing Batman Begins he said he locked himself in his room for a week and just read and re-read the Batman comics and made notes of all the cool moments and lines. Then he asked himself this question, if you boil the characters down to their essence, what are the elements that have to be there?
This questioning provided a lot of insight for when he actually went about writing the Batman Begins screenplay.
