Tony Gilroy has one of the most interesting resumes: The Cutting Edge, The Devil's Advocate, The Bourne movies, Michael Clayton, Rogue One.

Of all the pundits I've watched about screenwriting, Tony Gilroy is the most human, most passionate and the most honest writer I've seen. I love this guy.

Wish it was an hour long so that he could talk about the outlining process more, which he said was key.

I love this whole thing. But if you want to just get the essential wisdom (to me) in just under 10 minutes, watch from 5:56 (where he talks about starting from nothing) up until 15:30. The key points: 1) Start small, and specific; 2) Look for "DNA scenes" that are small and specific, but give you a gateway into the story's larger themes; and when you know you've got one of those scenes, build the movie around it.

'It has to come from dialouge.' Very good point - I often begin a fiction project the same way.

I love his point about finding the *problems* and *difficulties* about situations to make it interesting. Too many movies nowadays make everything too easy for the hero or make the location all glamorized and idealized, so I really love how he keeps things grounded 'cause that's, as he puts it, where the interesting stuff is at.

The pitch of the voices is higher because in the US it’s 24 frames and in the UK it’s 25. The sound goes up in pitch as the whole movie gets slightly shorter.
    From ntsc to pal.

Great lecture. Tony Gilroy could also be DeNiro's brother

I love this writer. I can identify fully with him, increasing the impact of his lecture. He talks about his process in absolutes, as if it is the only way to write a good screenplay. It is essentially the same as my own but I hear there are other ways by which one can create.

Such a brilliant writer!! The Bourne Identity and Bourne Legacy -- Two of my all time favourite action movies!! (The former possibly my favourite) and when I saw Cutting Edge (moons ago), it was one of my favourite rom coms. Wish there was somewhere to learn from him or that he was on Masterclass or something like it.

I'm always amazed at Zhang Yimou's screenplay especially "House of Flying daggers".
    Mei Dances...dance , dance , dance...
They fight, fight , fight...the fight stops...Jin says to Mei, "I came back for you, my love"...then they hold hands and continue fighting. Guards then chases them and they fight, fight , fight...Mei says, "You said you were going to take me where the real flowers grow". After that...they fight , fight , fight and while fighting they fall in love. She is actually in love with someone else...so two guys fight , fight , fight.
And Yimou makes it work! That is the amazing part. In the upcoming "The Great Wall"...Tony Gilroy and Yimou working with Matt Damon! Call me excited!
