Mona Lisa (Marisa Tomei) proves her automotive knowledge to the dismissive D.A. (Lane Smith).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When sweet Northern college kid Bill (Ralph Macchio) and his buddy Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) are picked up and thrown into the slammer in a hick Southern town, at first it looks like no big deal. Then they are informed that they are accused of murder. Penniless and without a single friend in the area, Bill decides to call his goofy cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who has somehow recently become a lawyer. Full of family feeling and bravado, Vinny, who has never tried a criminal case in his short life as a lawyer, rides south to defend his trusting relative. He's an expert motormouth and street-level logician from the wilder reaches of metropolitan New York, complete with a thick accent and the attitude to go with it. Otherwise, he's much less well qualified than your average public defender. When he arrives on the scene with his equally brassy girlfriend Lisa (Marisa Tomei), Bill is fairly sure he's going to be sentenced to death. His buddy Stan is even less confident of his legal representative, if that's possible, and the first thing Vinny has to do is to regain the consent of his clients to represent them. The local judge doesn't seem any too sympathetic to Vinny's verbal shenanigans either, and even the most optimistic supporter of the boys would begin to have doubts at this point -- and Vinny's no exception. With the insistent moral encouragement of his girlfriend, Vinny somehow accomplishes the impossible and wins grudging (if very irritated) respect from all concerned, for once studying as if his life depended on it.

My dad was a high level engineer for Chevy for 38 years (also one of the creators of the Corvair). I remember getting him to watch this scene and asking him if it was right. He said it was absolutely accurate.
"one of the creators of the Corvair" so very cool, my 2nd car, loved it. As long as I kept a case of oil in the (front) trunk it handled great, had pep too with a modded engine.

Corvairs are cool. Most people don't like them, but I like the design, it was very bold.

"My Cousin Vinny" is supposedly one of the most accurate portrayals of actual courtroom processes ever put on film. So much so that some law schools use it as part of their introductory curriculum. Turns out the director had a law degree, and went for realism.
The only thing I question is the rush for a murder trial. Especially where the death penalty was attached.

@@Lord_Bibulous Because they are on trial in ALABAMA. Many southern states are known to impose stiffer penalties for certain crimes. We don't have a lot of big city liberals down here that let criminals go right after they catch them.
The best thing about this scene is that he genuinely believed he would be able to embarrass her and it massively backfired.

Marisa really killed it. I can watch this movie a hundred times and not get tired of it. Joe Pesci and Marisa's chemistry was spot on.
Joe should have gotten a best supporting actor nod for this film. She was so amazing but their chemistry was off the charts. I never doubted for second that they were a real couple.

It's amazing when you look at Legally Blond, a movie I generally enjoy, and see how many things they get wrong about the actual practice of law.
This movie is well researched on a few levels. It’s actually used in Law School as a teaching tool. The director was a Lawyer and wanted to get it right.

Tweekedout I’ve watched a video where a real lawyer did a quick analysis over the accuracy in this movie and one of the only inaccuracies he brought up was how the lawyers walked in the well. I feel movies do that to get framing right and make it a little more cinematic

As several commentators note, this film is actually very accurate when it comes to courtroom procedure; one of the subtle tics that non-lawyers don't notice is that Vinny knows as much about cars as Mona Lisa does, but he needs her because he can't call himself to the stand.
Vinny definitely didn't know as much as she does.
But, he figured out his "theory" was wrong and that he could call her to explain it to the jury, and that she would get it in a matter of seconds.
Actually, this was the only thing about the movie that bothered me. it's the same problem with Legally Blonde. The main character, Vinnie (and Elle Woods) had to have their own expertise knowledge to solve the issue themselves. Love both movies and I don't think this detracts, but it's just a little personal annoyance

I love the camera angles immediately after Marissa Tormay delivers her retort. The stammering of Lane Smith (the prosecutor), the smug look on Joe Pesci, and the blank stare from Fred Gwynne. Classical.
Tomei gets shade for this movie from arm chair critics because it’s a comedy and she won the Oscar but she deserved it. Her timing was impeccable. Her accent was perfection and she walked away with the movie!

This movie was made by real professionals - great acting, great writing, the information is well researched - both legal and mechanical. And it is very funny.
Shame so many movies are ruined these days for the opposite reasons. Poor writing, bad acting and writers who not only don't know about source material, but actively hate it.
@@SarthorS I remember hearing how the creators of She Hulk had no clue how to make a courtroom drama and that was confirmed pretty quickly when TH-camrs who happen to be lawyers as well mentioned how rediculous the scenes were..
@@richards1708 They have no idea how to write comedy or superhero scenes either. They were essentially writing about their own sad little lives and the rest was awkwardly tacked on.
The writer/director was formerly a practicing attorney. Not a real case for him but these things happen. And yes, my law school did use the movie to train us on several points.
What I love in this scene is Pesci's open dare to the prosecutor, in front of the jury, to test his expert.
This entire court room scene with Marissa taking the stand and testifying is just one of the most SATISFYING and entertaining and enjoyable 5 minutes of film! The writing, her performance, EVERYTHING was just perfect. Can watch it over and over again.
My most favorite part was when Vinny went "Watch this" cause he knew that guy was about to OWNED
mine was when he was in prison trying to release his nephew (i think) and the communication got confusing about being gay and he didnt have a clue. that was funny
this one line is my favorite point in this movie.

Fred Gwynne is great in this (as is everyone). The little suspicious glance he gives the prosecutor when he asks Tomei why it's a trick question is a lovely touch.

Nobody knew that he was dying of cancer and in tremendous pain while making this film.

lol...I grew up in Cocoa Beach in the 60's and 70's and we had a girl transfer into our Jr. High School in like '70 or '71 and she was from Brooklyn...she had that accent...I thought it was very cute but a lot of the kids made fun of her, plus she dressed in like black clothes a lot, which back then in Florida was unheard of...I think going from Brooklyn to Cocoa Beach was quite the culture shock.
I was from Brooklyn & visited Cocoa Beach FL one summer to see family... I agree; it was a culture shock, lol.

The best part of the clip is Fred Gwynne's reaction. What a great actor and so little used for his talents. In this movie he was a delight to watch. And yes, the whole cast and screen play are great.

Absolutely well-deserved. There was a long-standing conspiracy theory at the time of Marisa Tomei winning the Oscar that it was a mistake, but the Academy let her keep it to save face. That theory was finally put to rest in 2017 when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope. The mistake was corrected on the spot and the two Pricewaterhouse Coopers accountants were shown the door.

I was born, raised, and have lived my whole life in life the deep south. A lot of the professionals that I’ve known try to lose our accent became it’s deemed to be ignorant Accents are cultural and beautiful.
@@MistyCunard I love accents and dialects they enrich our languges. Interestingly, my language does not have a dialect that would be so different that people from other regions or those raised in a different countries but still speaking Hungarian would not understand it. It is a miracle, unique, to our language. Wherever a Hungarian lives even if his accent is different he cannot have such a dialect I could not understand it. I love many accents and some I do not, and I agree with you that they are mostly wonderful. I do not understand why people are so haughty and hateful to look down on people of different backgrounds and accents. I love many American accents and many British ones too, and a few I dislike a lot. Bu that would never move me to be unkind ot someone.

There's a conspiracy regarding Marisa Tomei's Oscar. Because My Cousin Vinny wasn't an "Oscar type" movie, people have alleged Jack Palance read the wrong name on award night!
Best female lead had four heavy dramas and the lightweight comedy My cousin Vinny nominated. The heavy dramas cannibalized each other. Ms Tomei DID come out on top but it was a close four-way battle.
The academy broke protocol by putting out this statement, clearing Palance and Tomei of suspicion.
Didn't know that, but fully deserved indeed. Very underrated actress, Marisa Tomei, and in this film does a fantastic N.Y. accent. I know, I know, she was born there. But hams up the accent a treat. Gotta love this movie, a classic! Joe Pesci strays from his regular 'gangster' roles and does a fantastic job too!
What did jack Palance say when presenting Best Supporting Actress category ... something to the effect of ..... "first time in Oscar history that all nominees are foreigners. 4 from other countries and 1 from Brooklyn."

I always loved the faces of the jurors in the background when she's explaining why it was a trick question. The looks of stunned disbelief on a couple of them, after she proves she knows her stuff, is priceless.
Except for the smiling woman in green (right end of the first row), who seems to be genuinely enjoying the scene. It doesn't look like she's acting at all. :)

"Watch this!" with the nudge, and then when she has the prosecutor stuttering because she figured out his scam, he puts his feet up with that smug look.
It wasn't a "scam" -- he just didn't know anything about cars but thought he did.

A less patient/understanding judge would have caused a very different outcome to this scene
@@thatguyfromhendon344 A judge is obligated to have the evidence presented as well as have the expertise of an "expert witness" examined for the jury to be able to have all the facts prior to rendering a decision. It's all fairly standard. This is relatively close to what an actual courtroom and trial is like, minus the obviously enhanced comedic scenes.
He threw a bunch of random stats together and got called on it. He thought she was a phony, she thought it was exactly as stated, a trick. Talk about a blistering call-out. Man almost sounds like just wants to get away now.
this was one of the last movies I watched with my dad. he passed away aug 15th of this year, and really couldn't leave the house so I spent lots of time finding DVDs and movies he'd never seen, that I thought he might like. and this was one of them.. HE LOVED IT

"Ms. Vito" on the witness stand is one of the greatest and most memorable gems of American film comedy ever. The writing, performances, directing, and editing are all brilliant. Howeva, Ms. Tomei, here, is an acting godess.

Besides how funny Pesci is, I enjoyed how throughout the entire movie she kept asking how can she help then she ends up saving the day!
I remember watching this for the first time and thinking, “So that’s why she won the Oscar.” She annihilated everyone in this scene.
She was great, but the casting director was perfect. Every actor in this movie, from the witnesses to the jury to the stars, were pure perfection. There is not one character in this movie who is out of place.

What an excellent movie! Marisa Tomei was fantastic in this role! One of THE BEST comedies ever made!
What a film! Everything came together - from the actors, the acting, the storyline, the script, the direction, etc., etc. Loved it - and always will.
She was incredible in this movie. She gave a perfect performance, entirely worthy of the Oscar it brought her.
The best part about Vinny putting her on the stand as a witness is that he not only let her help with the case, which she genuinely wanted to do (and he shut her down just prior to this in the restaurant in an epic argument), but he made use of her knowledge genuinely instead of an attempt to just placate her. She really did break the case, and he was able to publicly laud her to make up for the fiasco at the diner at lunch.
THAT is how you make it up to your woman. ;)

But it seemed as though Vinny broke the case, when he was looking at the photo of the tire marks on the road, and obviously became aware of a game-changing revelation, leading to his calling Ms. Vito to the stand, where she confirmed his own discoveries. Question is, how did he learn such intricate details about old engine and chassie designs?

But how in the name of Jehovah did his tinkering in a garage make him more knowledgable about axles, tires, suspensions, paint colors for year models, etc. than the expert who was called to testify by the DA? Vinnie recognized the clues as much as Lisa did, while the expert? Not so much.
Truly excellent comedy, brilliantly written and acted by everyone involved. But she absolutely made the perfect surprise witness that truly stole the show and blew the prosecution apart. A very richly deserved Oscar for a fantastic performance. Great film.
Best moment! Pesci says "watch this!". Perfection, the hand nudge, the voice, the look, the smile. Definitely the best actor ever (not that everyone else isn't terrific too). The master of small touches at work!!
Imho he should also have gotten an Oscar too. & I love that she did. It would have been a crime if she hadn't. But he also. Their chemistry together was absolute.

Hard to believe that Tomei who was a small bit player in a Different World just 4 years earlier would burst on the scene with such a fantastic performance with My Cousin Vinny. This women was a gem in the making.
The best thing about this movie is how legally accurate it is. I mean, save for some minor issues with lawyers in the well, the legal accuracy is astounding.
It is even accurate in that everything she said was correct on cars as well
Writing standards were much higher back then. Today's crap writing is lazy and full of politics and identity signalling.

Tomei won the Academy Award for one simple reason: she gave her role so much snap and spunk she out-spunked and out-snapped the other actresses in 1992. Her impatience for everyone and everything is infectious: you half-hallucinate sparks shooting out of her even she stands very still (she's like a Mexican jumping bean crossed with a firecracker).
She is so freaking brilliant.

When this movie came out, Marisa Tomei was 28 and Joe Pesci was 49. And yet amazingly they don't seem mismatched at all. They actually seem like a good couple. Despite the huge age difference, they still feel like a natural pair.
I enjoyed this movie, and I am old enough to have watched it when it first came out, but I have to disagree with you on that one! The one thing that seemed ridiculous to me throughout was why someone as obviously young as her would be going out with someone so obviously old as him!! @@cwam1701e Joe Pesci was no stranger to having alterations made to his appearance in terms of makeup and hairpieces to make him appear ever so slightly younger than he was, so I don't feel like the character of Vinny was supposed to be as old as Joe Pesci actually is. They did the same thing to him in Goodfellas.
Forget the age...In real life someone who looks like Pesci isn't getting someone as hot as Tomei unless he pays for her.

A great comedy story: super writing and dialog, characters, subplots, acting, directing and most of all the writing. The author is the hero for me!

THANK you! Everyone keeps saying "my but the writers must have done sooo much research!" Lol. They knew and it inspired the plot. They couldn't have written it otherwise. It has to have started with that knowledge bc the rewrite otherwise, forget it!
& That wasn't intended to be a trick question. Lisa either can't imagine him not knowing or doesn't want to offend the prosecutor & announce he's wrong, or worse, not as bright as his smug attitude shows he assumes he is! (The prosecutor had been rather condescending, treating her like he was humoring her, that "little lady" bs presumption of inadequacy bc she's pretty, or younger, & gasp, a city, girl, Yankee, lol) Vinny's up against him & even though she's a hostile witness 😂, loyalty. Maybe she's being tactful. & Ya can't tell which, as it should be. Masterful bit, there too. & He's so surprised to learn he's not actually qualified to even question Vinny's choice of expert witness. "She's acceptable." Head down, walks quickly away. But this is also there to show that he would never have seen that the boys' car could not have made those tracks, nor had the sheriff look for the car of the body type & color that could, & it saves their lives. It's not just pivotal. It's the basis. The whole plot rests on that. & Nobody else got this. High five to you & me. 😂 & I am comforted by the fact someone else got that! 😂😂😂🤙
loved that movie and was thinking wow how the heck did she remember all the lines pertaining to car timing and such. she's such a great actress.

I watch this movie a few times a year because it is priceless. It todays world I NEED a good laugh and this film does the trick. And everybody in it is at their peak, nailing every character. And the one liners just make me drop. "What, do you have magic grits?" Even before that "What's a grit?" And the Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei interaction.....charming and funny and loving and brassy. Perfect.
The way she is nodding her head in assurance and attitude proved she deserved that Oscar
I love this character because the actor is brilliant. She is one of my favorites in anything the does. Not only for her physical beauty but because her beautiful soul comes out to dazzle the listener and the viewer of her performances ❤

Tomei was so good in that film!! One of the best comic performances ever. I know she does a lot of different kinds of work but I wish she'd do more comedy.
She got panned for winning an oscar for this movie but Marissa Tomeis performance was just incredible. Her chemistry with Joe Pesci was so believable
I especially enjoyed their "arguments" in the hotel room.
I'm a retired Master ASE tech and everything she says in this move (about cars) is correct. I'm impressed by the effort someone went to to research this information.
Well except there was another 1962 GM product that came with positraction besides the Tempest and the Corvette with perhaps enough power to make the tire marks and that is the 1962 Corvair Monza Spyder. But no one would ever mistake the Corvair for anything else and if you do it wrong you are sure to break something so I will cut them some slack on that bit of dialogue...

@@dodgeplow oh, they can, believe me. 2600lb curb weight, with most of the weight right over the drive wheels, 150 is plenty. The screenwriter has said he was fully aware of that, but left it out because it kept the dialogue punchier and most of the audience wouldnt notice.

@@wildwoodsgirl1706 In the movie she refers to the Corvette sports car as something one could not mistake for the Buick which is true but she fails to also mention the rear-engined Corvair which probably would be hard to mistake as well but which also came with optional positraction.
I love this scene mostly for the judge's reaction to her that is a mix of shock, awe, a dash of fear, and dollop of interest.
Such a great performance from marissa. And I was always struck by Pesci. For so long, I only remembered him as the volatile ammoral character from goodfellas. Than this came out. Not only did it show his range. But, he displayed such a sweet decency to a character that might have been a little naive, but wasn’t stupid by a mile.
I fell in love with Marisa when I saw this movie decades ago. She's a goddess.

The question made the lawyer appear dishonest and deceptive. Bad move.
And a witness should never, ever provide an answer to a question not asked.
