People take artists artworks without consent, feed them into the AI programs and use those AI results created from other artists works and claim it as their own, faking that they drew it themselves or even sell them. Yeah, capitalism is an overarching issue but we are still allowed to criticize how the tech is being used. I think people who can't see why artists can take issue with that is deliberately being obtuse.

As an artist, I just hope that the 'creators' and people who made this technology public one day feel the same sense of doom, despair, nothingness and panic that artists are feeling. There is already AI that is creating code, and essentially being made to replace programmers. I'm not a professional coder, mostly a writer/artist and just someone who learned programming, and it takes a lot of work and skill to code. I can't imagine that all coders are happy with the idea of AI being able to create code quickly and efficiently.
Yall are just now being affected. Labor sectors has been at it and people rather be ceos and artist than farmers, maintenance workers, electricians, plumbers etc. there will be a significant lack of laborers in those areas. Its gonna get ugly if we dont bring up incentives. People panic buy and make a mess already now imagine not having enough ppl to bring all these resources to your community

@erickmiranda3600 It's not just about work. If it was, casual artists and those who do it as a hobbie wouldn't be as outraged as the rest of us. Art is something that makes humanity what it is. Creativity is one of the few ways to challenge the status quo. If that voice is taken from the people through surface level "art" by AI, there are even fewer ways to make the peoples voice heard. Yes, the industry side is important and is being affected greatly, but I would say it's shortsighted to see it only in regard to income.
I'm currently in art school to become a concept artist/character designer and seeing people program robots to do creative jobs like the one I'm studying to go into is really discouraging in a way I can't describe. It just really, really sucks that I'm so close to getting there, and there's a robot that's been programmed by stealing art from non-consenting parties that is actively working to take away my future job.
yeah, the way the AI is trained is very unethical. I don't think people should be allowed to train AIs with images/media that aren't theirs, images/media they didn't purchase, and images/media that they didn't get permission to train with

I've heard about there being precedent that only the human created parts of an image would be considered protected under copyright (as well as larger studios being very particular about having clear copyright to the things they're working with), which should help with keeping your job prospects rather secure(?)

I think a good way to slow down the AI race would be to make anything made with it automatically public domain, or atleast, cannot be copyrighted. You'll see companies drop it real quick if they can't selfishly keep it for themselves
Additionally, require every “artwork” generated through Ai to be clearly labeled as such. If the general population embraces it, fine- but if they don’t, and seek out human-made art, that should be a clear statement. A customer should be informed if they’re spending hard earned money, on a person’s lifetime labor, vs Midjourney. Of course, many Ai art enthusiasts wouldn’t like this type of transparency.... gee, wonder why?… Art aside, this disclosure is also important for news-related imagery, politically misleading stuff, and blackmailed adult content.

AI art is not art, and I will die on that hill. Art is not a "thing", it's a _process_ , specifically, it's a form of human expression and cultural communication. Even ignoring the HUGE ethical issue with AI bots scraping uncredited and uncompesnated material to create their output, it almost completely removes the human from the equation. But too many humans have lost that understanding of art, and see it only as "pretty pictures" or "entertaining stories". We've been taught most of our lives to see art as a commodity, as a _thing_ to _own_ , rather than a method of connecting to our community and creating a shared culture, as an *essential part of our humanity* . And that's the core problem, the whole point of AI-generated "art" is to create commodities for a capitalist market, and for individuals to garner ego-boosting acclaim and other rewards without making the effort to actually develop their skill and imagination and express their personhood. Plugging prompts into a bot and then claiming to be an artist is like ordering a pizza with personalized toppings from a restaurant and then claiming to be a chef. It is not "democratizing" art as so many techbros like to say, since there is no "democratization" needed; literally *anyone* can make art of some sort. It doesn't matter if someone else considers it "good" or "bad", the important thing is creative expression, regardless of the result. Keep in mind that the same people who are pushing AI "art" as the Next Big Thing, and deriding anyone opposed to it, are mostly the same people who have been shilling NFTs and cryptocurrency.
I think you are completely missing the point here. Proponents of AI entertainment don't want it because they think it will make them an artist. They want it precisely because they are not artists and AI is the only way they can generate an image, song, or movie that they do want. That's why it doesn't matter if AI can write a better script or draw a better picture than a human.

No computer will ever benefit from painting. I can draw all day and burn my art so nobody sees it, and still get a sense of catharsis and satisfaction that no machine can. When a robot gets depressed because it can't come up with an idea, then I'll be worried.

I've been losing my mind seeing so many uninformed takes about AI, and one of the biggest things that people miss is the fact that AI generators don't do anything "on purpose". it's hard not to anthropomorphize it, but it's really just very advanced text prediction (or image prediction, etc. depending on the generator) and it doesn't understand a single thing that it's saying. the word "intelligence" is misleading and vague imo, since the computer doesn't "know" what an apple is. it just knows what humans usually say in response to "what is an apple" based on the text it has ingested from the internet. and god, we really need to correct misinformation about AI functioning like a human brain and other stuff like that. I also feel like we're getting ahead of ourselves in these conversations, like imagining what terrible things AI might do instead of figuring out what to do right now. we should all advocate really hard to pause and focus on things that we could actually change, like limitations on the datasets that train these computers. I get that it's super scary to imagine AI taking jobs and becoming an evil force in the world, but I feel like that broad view is really missing the specific points about what we can do to combat AI misuse. social media companies were allowed to invade our privacy and use our data unchecked for a very long time (and they still are) so knowing that, we should push to impose limitations on that data for both privacy and copyright reasons! I think using data they've scraped without permission is 100% copyright infringement and I'm really hoping for some favorable court decisions that will set the precedent that it's not fair use.

I'm so glad someone finally said that, I still cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on with all of the fearmongering around AI (the actual "gaining sentience" kind, I understand why e.g. artists are mad at AI). LLMs like ChatGPT are basically just (complex) text generators and (some) people were freaking the fuck out over it. I don't understand the stupid "AI said it will control/kill/whatever-bad-word humanity", "AI said this and that" clickbait bullshit that people are eating up. Our current "AI"s don't understand what the fuck they're saying. Guys like Musk (whose Neurolink I still find way more questionable and dangerous, btw) and that one ex-Google-employee jumping on the fearmonger train while not really providing any information as to HOW exactly these AIs that are actually intelligent in a human sense would even function and never providing any specifics, but rather just throwing out scary-sounding buzzwords left and right and seemingly not touching on the actual, current issues we have with AI right now. And yeah, why is everyone scared of AI, if it ever even comes into being, becoming evil? Can we not have safety measures? Like in the end it's still just something powered by electricity and all kinds of technology that can fail (or be brought to failure). For us humans, our thoughts etc. tie heavily into our biology - hormones, DNA etc. - an AI doesn't have that. How would a machine without biology "think"? You could probably argue that we become greedy, hateful etc. because of our biology, so why would AI, something without biology, act like we do? This reminds me of when I saw someone play Detroid become Human and let ChatGPT make the choices and in the comments people were like "oh, it makes sense it would choose the cold, logical path..." like no, ChatGPT isn't choosing shit. It doesn't know what it's saying, for fuck's sake. It doesn't even know what the words "cold" and "logical" mean, let alone anything else it's spitting out. In a way it's almost fascinating how you can just throw out THE most surface-level information about something and people will come up with the most crazy Sci-Fi scenarios about how it will end us.
unrelated tangent but, this is mostly why I feel like the idea of intelligence is highly misunderstood. AI isnt intelligent; it simply performs number calculations and some other text prediction stuff. I think intelligence shouldnt be measured by what you can do, but how you can grow and learn; AI /cannot/ learn. AI cannot learn in a conventional sense; if I put 20 pictures in front of a robot capable of processing jpegs, the robot will not be able to create a jpeg. I have to code it to observe the features of each of the jpeg, and then code it to create an image. I have to teach it how to do those things. AI cannot learn. it can only be taught how to parse information. so HOW is that intelligence? intelligence should be classified by your ability to make sense and learn about new topics-- it should be defined by your ability to problem solve. AI cannot solve problems. they can just assess them and regurgitate a pre-programmed solution.
As a newbie of the art community, I hope artists will be done justice. I hope that their creativity as wonderful, complex, human beings, with true experiences and emotions, will be more valued and win over AI. And that applies to anyone who expresses their emotions, and themselves, through any kind of form, and is threatened by being replaced with a robot's souless, empty work. Keep living and growing people❤

As a lifelong artist, I strongly disagree with the common rhetoric treating AI as some kind of evil entity that must be fought against. I believe it's born from severe misunderstandings about what AI art really is and how generative art tools can be used. I am happy to discuss my perspective with you if you want.
I will just carry on with my silly flawed human-made art. What I appreciate about this video is how it makes an honest attempt at both taking the threats seriously AND also questioning if the fear has possibly gone too far. Personally I don't think art or even digital art are dead, what I do believe is that it's going to be another excuse to demand more efficiency for less pay across all the affected industries, even in cases where the new tools may not magically speeding things up by as much as they think.
I am highly concerned about AI under our finance capital system, will be used against people instead of helping(increasing accessibility). We have known for some time how oppressive and insidious white supremacy is and I feel AI upholds this status quo. The status quo of white supremacy (the power system/social structures) and its control mechanism of culturalist, ableism, classism, sexism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia. Knowing how much corporations etc hate paying people what they are worth, and a political system that hates oppressed populations, AI is something that should concern us all.

Your video essays are so creative, thought compelling and interesting. Could AI replace what you make, what you make me feel and ponder? No way! AI should be a tool to help, like with editing and such, not be used to replace creators. I live in Japan, and here, the sale of AI generated images was made illegal. You can make those images and post them online, but you cant sell them.
In the US our Copyright Office has ruled that you can make the images using AI but you cannot own the copyright to them, because writing a prompt isn’t sufficient to meet the legal standard for ownership. That means corporations probably won’t use the current image generators. It’s a pretty significant legal decision. Imagine if a court ruled that you couldn’t own copyright in any document you wrote in Microsoft Word- then nobody would use Word. Of course that’s not the case- you’re still an author of a story you write in Word. But the difference is that typing a short prompt into AI image generator doesn’t make you the artist
At this point, I blame the capitalists misdirecting AI more than I do the actual AI. Not to mention the very human-driven devaluation of art as a whole in recent years. This is inevitable and we will it so.
I have an AI that boils eggs for me! I guess technically it's an appliance, but it knows when the eggs are done and I like calling it EggBot 😂 I bought it at a second hand store for $6 and it's amazing. It uses maybe a few tablespoons of water and is done in under 15 minutes with much less waste heat.
AI has shown us just how quickly people are willing to use new technology to screw creatives over - artists, writers, anyone who requires a salary that could be cut out of the budget by replacing their incredible content with free knock-offs. I don't fear AI. I fear what humans with AI will do, because we have already proven how little we care about harming other humans with this or any other tool at our disposal.
About the AI question with art, my sister and I have a different opinions. My sister believes that the fact that we can make art with AIs democratises art in a certain way, a field that is basically elitist and to which few have access. So she says "yeah thats great for people and they can enjoy art through their own vision without the need of skills". She also thinks that when artists publish their work, unless it's on a platform that protects the rights of others (not insta or pinterest lol), well that's a risk. Also, she thinks it's up to people who use AI to find out about the provenance of each pieces of work, used to create the AI artwork. As an artist I have a much less positive view of the matter: I understand this approach and agree with it but I can't help but feel bad for the work, time, energy, esteem, and skills that went into certain works or creations that ended up being stolen/used. I know people and how much they don't care: they'll never try to find out how many works were used to get the creation they have in front of them. And just the morals behind it are questionable..I just hope some laws or some measures will be taken to better protect the work of artists.
This argument about democratization: I see it again, and again. It’s not really valid. What exactly, needed to be liberated, so badly? It wasn’t learning resources, because TH-cam itself is overflowing with excellent free tutorials. It wasn’t tools, because even a simple, ballpoint pen, and a scrap of paper is enough to get started. Obviously, anyone who can afford Ai software subscriptions and internet access, could have downloaded the multiple free digital art platforms available online. So, was it time requirement? Everything worth learning requires time.. Have we really reached the point where we DON’T actually want to internalize skill? Skill, which will remain in your brain and muscle memory, whenever you step away from a device? 90% of these people will see only miniscule improvement in actual ability, the moment you take away their Ai software. Having a good curator’s eye, is probably the most it will grant them. Meanwhile, most digital artists would still able to create, even if you remove their computers, because they learned key fundamentals. At its core, the excuse boils down to laziness and greed. The ones most excited to use it, invariably are plugging in the names of artists and authors, to skinwalk the veneer of success. The mere fact, so many grifters, even on Etsy, don’t openly advertise they are using Ai, shows they know it’s innately less valuable. I do think Ai can be used as a tool for artists, but it’s so obvious that’s not how these companies prioritized the release of this tech. Just look at how Adobe has stabbed their own userbase ( of decades ), in the back.
I hate the democratization argument, people are just too lazy to learn how to produce art. They assume that artists are born with innate abilities to create art, and it is impossible to learn, so it can justify their laziness and their unwillingness to try to learn. If you want to make something you have to learn how to make it. I also find the entitlement of being able to make art, without putting in the work to be so annoying. No one is stopping anyone from producing any art. There have been countless artists/writers who make art/comics/animation/books/games without the skills to make it, and eventually, they do learn those skills and improve. No one became an artist overnight, even so-called prodigies still had to put some effort in to learn their craft. I find art to be one of the most accessible mediums, anyone can learn art there are so many resources and tools available, many of them which are free. You need a digital art program there are so many open-source programs just as advanced as commercial products. Heck, there's even a free clone of Photoshop available online. You can buy good digital tablets for under $30. Go traditional and you can literally start with a pen/pencil and paper. I think the real problem for these defenders is that they want to create something instantly, and get the same amount of praise. I love that I can produce art, and I can make anything I want, even if it takes hours.

@@SabrielBlack That seems somewhat ableist. Not everyone can acquire the fine motor skills necessary to draw well. But even if we are talking about someone who could, eventually, learn them, I fail to see why we should require such a large investment into acquiring technical skills for something that is supposed to be about expressing one's creativity. Almost everyone can learn to play a number of instruments with a lot of time and effort, but modern music software allows one to produce a song without having to do so. Do you see that as a bad thing, as well?
I use Chat GPT almost everyday. I love using it to organize information. I also use it when I draw tarot cards. I like to input my readings and ask for patterns and see if there was anything it thought I overlooked or if it thinks I should expand upon a subject.

The point about stagnation is such an important one. The current economical system thrives on stagnation. An endless stream of new versions of the same old stuff, sold in a different packaging at a slightly higher price point. Efficiency equals selling more and more with less and less effort.
Ai art has effected my outlook as an artist but I feel like me and my friends will always still have an appreciation for the art that came from my real hand which has so much life behind it

I'm a young artist, for the past year since AI started to get big I completely stopped drawing because of the existential crisis it had me going through. I know now that it's okay for me to draw just for fun, but it's the most crushing feeling in the world to have your lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist completely crushed in a few weeks' time.
My husband uses Chat all the time. He loves it but I know that there will never be anything like a human being creating, sharing, producing information, art , etc…. I am someone who does a lot of creative things (mainly writing but I also draw every once in a while). When I first heard of Chat GPT I felt this sense of despair. For me, my writing abilities were my asset and something I spent years of my life building up even if I never intended for it to be. The idea that my skills would no longer be necessary because a computer could do it instead was just painful. I really understand the frustration of many creative people but then I paused and I thought about it. We look at AI so destructively, we ignore its benefits and think of it as something that takes away our livelihoods and our purpose for living even but this is mainly just fear. We're afraid our talents will be obsolete and that they'll no longer matter. On this point I want to disagree. AI won't mean the end of creatives. Just like with the panic about calculators and photographs, in the future these things can co-exist. There will always be more opportunities and as artists I think we should all take a moment to remember why we started in the first place. I don't know if these words will reach anyone but anger and fear won't serve us any purpose. We have to look forward and realise that this advancement is no different from anything else.
Anger, fear, protest: Yes, they do matter. Both artists and the general public, should’ve had more say in the release of this technology. A small subset of tech entrepreneurs and engineers should not speak for everyone. There’s no reason to just surrender and take it, lying down. Yes, the tech is now here to stay, but it doesn’t mean it should be left unregulated. If everyone can sudden “create” 300+ Davinci paintings in minutes, what value will digital art even have? Monetary or symbolically? Realistically, will the average viewer even care anymore? Not likely. ..there’s nothing good about numbing people to the struggle and journey of art. Traditional media may continue to exist, and possibly rise in value, but let’s be real- we live in a digitally oriented world, so the effect here, is extremely skewed. Traditional artists also need to market themselves online, and there are few ways to protect themselves from getting scraped, outside of programs like Glaze.
People won't stop making art, but we may stop being paid for it, and under capitalism, money is time, which means less time to do what we love. And that sucks. I think AI could be an awesome creative tool, but I worry that it will be wielded to minimize cost and maximize profit, and that art - and artists and other creatives - will suffer for that penny-pinching motive. We're already suffering under excessive copyright periods and the current deluge of remakes and milquetoast derivative storytelling. Yes, there is still great art being made, but we all need to eat and pay rent, so if creative jobs start going to AI, we'll need to find other work, probably not creative. Which, again, sucks.

However, ceramics have been made by machines for a long long time and the industry has still survived but is fairly rare and very expensive. My stance on AI is ismilar to other artists, I cannot condone a tool that has literally trained on stolen art. It's also annoying to see folks trying to claim they are artists, when they literally just give a AI a prompt. I think the only AI artists are those folks who actually add on to the generated image, and create something new, not someone who literally just threw the prompt hot anime girl with blue hair into a generator and is now claiming they spend hours on their artwork, and drew it themselves. Art is a skill like anything else, and should be learned. And besides with so many free resources available online, and the low cost of good digital tablets in the present, I think learning to draw is much more accessible. I hate that corporations are tying to replace artists with AI and already exploit and underpay them. We know coporporations like to weaponize creators's passion for the arts, and the scarcity of jobs, by basically pressuring them to work 16 hours days to be a good team player and also to secure their jobs. They already treat artists like machines. AI also adopts the biases of their programmers, which is huge problem, because you basically get racist/sexist notions built into AI, when ideally it should be more neutral because it's not a human. Honestly I missed the days when AI was more of a tool, and it focused on things like filters, reproducing classic art which was already in the public domain, or creating useful things for artist like making busts of imaginary humans, or being able to create multiple angles of a photo/or illustration. Those were much more harmless and useful of AI, and didn't step on other artists' toes. I remember these tools were often recommended by artists, and were useful. I know people like that AI has allowed people to make portraits of characters for free, but at the same time, there are so many avatar/portait makers freely available that are made by artists. There's also a lot of templates/bases out there for people to edit and make their own characters. On top of this I know a ton of artists who are just willing to make art for free or very cheaply, if they get excited about a prompt/idea. I'm no programmer, but I did study game design, and do know how to code. Quite frankly I still think all the doom and gloom of AI actually achieving human intelligence to be ridiculous. Computers are stupid. They need very clear instructions, and throw fits over things like capitalization and stray commas. I think about AI in videogames, that often have very limited functions (like being able to follow enemies) and they still mess up, even as complex as AI is. I certainly wouldn''t want AI to drive a car. I doubt we'll ever see the day when AI is able to replicate human speech/decision making without being heavily scripted. The only time I ever thought any chatbots sounded even remotely human like, was because the creators had written a ton of scripts/responses themselves. Often the ilustion is broken only after after a few minutes. I much prefer those silly Personality Forge chatbots, over watching corporations trying to replace coders, cs workers, artistw, and writers with AI.
I will never let AI art take my love away from a craft I so lovingly put my everything into. Don't let AI put you down, all types of artist included. Writing, music, fine arts, etc. Keep drawing, remixing, novel writing, and don't let hopelessness drive you away.
I feel that an interesting aspect of this idea of "replacement" is how much it clearly shows how much competition for survival has been structurally integrated at all levels of our society. If I feel like the Beatles or whomever are the best of all times, does that mean that music should stop, that nobody else should ever dare to play anything else, much less make a career out of it? No, of course not. When I play music, it is meaningful and interesting, and therefore "valuable", because I'm the one doing right here and now, regardless of how "good" or "new" it is. Sure, art that manages to be original or insightful is justly felt to be more meaningful, but that isn't a requirement for it to be art. Therefore, even if AI eventually cracked the art code and managed to be the "best" artist ever, why should we feel differently about it than we would for human "best artists"? I make art because I want to, regardless of how much "better" someone else might be at it, human or AI. The idea of replacement is only born from a context that makes art, and work in general, function like a competition for survival, where only some are selected to thrive (often via dubious criteria... Cough cough capitalism cough...) while the others are left not only in a rough spot economically, but also with this insidious brand of "not good enough", as if wanting to participate in art and work could only be meaningful and appropriate when arbitrary standards are met. So I feel that the conversation about AI should also include a conversation about how badly we're currently handling the concept of "worth". I mean, honestly, people genuinely claiming the death of human art because they could make more money out of AI art is such an admission of how little understanding and appreciation of humanity and of its lived experience hypercapitalism has...

Art doesn't have to be perfect, or even good (whatever those words mean), to be worthwhile and worthy. I think nowadays so many people believe that nothing short of excellence deserves praise or approval. This mindset is exemplified by the positivity bias in social media, where filters enhance an already highly selected image. People see amazing content and think they have to be just as good-right now!-or they're nothing, and nobody will ever care or even notice them. Maybe to them AI is just another filter, so they don't think about how it was made by feeding an algorithm millions and millions of images (or text samples, or audio files) without asking permission from the creator. I hope that makes sense 😅
*Literally* arguing with an "ai artist" right now actually - That's the thing... You cant say its about artists' rights because they say they are "artsists too". You also can't tell them its unethical because of a lack of consent, because they say they just don't want to "get into the AI debate" or they say posting your art anywhere online is consent... Like... I knew as an artist how bad cultural treatment of artists was... how they would steal our art and erase our signatures and repost things without a tag or link... I'm a lifelong artist who is happy to embrace this new tool. I am also educated on machine learning and have coded generative models myself. I don't believe that using online material for training data is unethical, but I can understand why others can believe it is. I'm happy to have the "AI debate" with you if you're willing to hear me out.
They are literally art thieves because they are taking credit for what the model produces. Idc what you say. Even if you're not just prompting and using something like controlNet, you're effectively commissioning the model with a detailed description and maybe some small example sketches. You don't have as much control as you would have if you drew things yourself. No you didn't draw that. StableDiffusion, Midjourney or DALL-E 'drew' it for you.

Part of me wants to embrace AI in general or, at least, in certain ways, but the fact that AI art, specifically, pulls from copyrighted works, that part really bothers me. The way I see it, art will be among the first things completely overtook by ai, but art as general is in my opinion supposed to be a source of joy for artists. That said, art will become absolutely private and just a form of self therapy. Think of it as a yoga or meditating. No one will ever care enough to take a look on someone's else's art which is absolutely sad to me but I personally think that's likely to happen.
As someone with a learning disability AI has helped me communicate in ways that has opened doors for me and my neurospicy community. AI is a tool and all tools can be used as weapons, especially by the system. The lost jobs of "human calculators" that were replaced by computers are not mourned today. People today still have passion for creating new ways to computing, and some of them are turning it into AI. We will not go back to not having AI, regardless if we fear or embrace it, it will only serve us through understanding it and using it with intention.

AI has really done a number on my partner's (an artist) mental state, especially the techbro reactions declaring traditional art dead and AI art the future. Personally, I think its just another vastly overhyped product, a la ChatGPT. Lauded as the downfall of my own career (a historian) I have to admit I was mostly puzzled why people even thought such a program could ever send any academic out of work, let alone a highly multilingual field such as history. I work in 5 modern languages (and 3 dead ones), often need colleagues to do some translations on the ones I do not master because that does not at all cover all the literature. I'm sure that in time such a program could at least master those languages, but access the material, the vast majority of which is undigitized and/or paywalled, and then comprehand all of that as well. And then still crank out a coherent essay that analyses the material and comes up with something new - hilarious. Especially since it can not distinguish facts from truth, and it just so happens to be that almost everything on the internet about history is outdated, incomplete, and/or factually wrong. And thats the majority of its input. Nah, what I am worried about is right-wingers giving us to the giantess because they do not like the way we're telling the story. The 2008 economic crisis already was a great excuse to put the axe into my field of studies, I expect the next to nearly tear it down.

People take artists artworks without consent, feed them into the AI programs and use those AI results created from other artists works and claim it as their own, faking that they drew it themselves or even sell them. I think people who can't see why artists can take issue with that is deliberately being obtuse.

As an artist, I just hope that the 'creators' and people who made this technology public one day feel the same sense of doom, despair, nothingness and panic that artists are feeling. The pain of having your labor of love being stolen from you. Sold against your will. To be ridicularized when trying to protect yourself. This is too much hurtful.
There is already AI that is creating code, and essentially being made to replace programmers. I'm not a professional coder, mostly a writer/artist and just someone who learned programming, and it takes a lot of work and skill to code. I can't imagine that all coders are happy with the idea of AI being able to create code quickly and efficiently.
Yall are just now being affected. Labor sectors has been at it and people rather be ceos and artist than farmers, maintenance workers, electricians, plumbers etc. there will be a significant lack of laborers in those areas. @erickmiranda3600 It's not just about work. If it was, casual artists and those who do it as a hobbie wouldn't be as outraged as the rest of us. Art is something that makes humanity what it is. Creativity is one of the few ways to challenge the status quo. If that voice is taken from the people through surface level "art" by AI, there are even fewer ways to make the peoples voice heard. Yes, the industry side is important and is being affected greatly, but I would say it's shortsighted to see it only in regard to income.
I'm currently in art school to become a concept artist/character designer and seeing people program robots to do creative jobs like the one I'm studying to go into is really discouraging in a way I can't describe. It just really, really sucks that I'm so close to getting there, and there's a robot that's been programmed by stealing art from non-consenting parties that is actively working to take away my future job.
yeah, the way the AI is trained is very unethical. I don't think people should be allowed to train AIs with images/media that aren't theirs, images/media they didn't purchase, and images/media that they didn't get permission to train with

I've heard about there being precedent that only the human created parts of an image would be considered protected under copyright (as well as larger studios being very particular about having clear copyright to the things they're working with), which should help with keeping your job prospects rather secure(?)
I've lived long enough to see people make the same conversations about computers, machines, robots, and now AI and I've seen all of these things take money, jobs, and opportunities away rather than make life easier alone.

I think a good way to slow down the AI race would be to make anything made with it automatically public domain, or atleast, cannot be copyrighted. You'll see companies drop it real quick if they can't selfishly keep it for themselves
Additionally, require every “artwork” generated through Ai to be clearly labeled as such. If the general population embraces it, fine- but if they don’t, and seek out human-made art, that should be a clear statement. A customer should be informed if they’re spending hard earned money, on a person’s lifetime labor, vs Midjourney. Of course, many Ai art enthusiasts wouldn’t like this type of transparency.... gee, wonder why?…
Art aside, this disclosure is also important for news-related imagery, politically misleading stuff, and blackmailed adult content.

Art is not a "thing", it's a _process_ , specifically, it's a form of human expression and cultural communication. Even ignoring the HUGE ethical issue with AI bots scraping uncredited and uncompesnated material to create their output, it almost completely removes the human from the equation. But too many humans have lost that understanding of art, and see it only as "pretty pictures" or "entertaining stories". We've been taught most of our lives to see art as a commodity, as a _thing_ to _own_ , rather than a method of connecting to our community and creating a shared culture, as an *essential part of our humanity* .
And that's the core problem, the whole point of AI-generated "art" is to create commodities for a capitalist market, and for individuals to garner ego-boosting acclaim and other rewards without making the effort to actually develop their skill and imagination and express their personhood. Plugging prompts into a bot and then claiming to be an artist is like ordering a pizza with personalized toppings from a restaurant and then claiming to be a chef.
It is not "democratizing" art as so many techbros like to say, since there is no "democratization" needed; literally *anyone* can make art of some sort. It doesn't matter if someone else considers it "good" or "bad", the important thing is creative expression, regardless of the result. Keep in mind that the same people who are pushing AI "art" as the Next Big Thing, and deriding anyone opposed to it, are mostly the same people who have been shilling NFTs and cryptocurrency.

I think you are completely missing the point here. Proponents of AI entertainment don't want it because they think it will make them an artist. They want it precisely because they are not artists and AI is the only way they can generate an image, song, or movie that they do want.

No computer will ever benefit from painting. I can draw all day and burn my art so nobody sees it, and still get a sense of catharsis and satisfaction that no machine can. When a robot gets depressed because it can't come up with an idea, then I'll be worried.

I've been losing my mind seeing so many uninformed takes about AI, and one of the biggest things that people miss is the fact that AI generators don't do anything "on purpose". it's hard not to anthropomorphize it, but it's really just very advanced text prediction (or image prediction, etc. depending on the generator) and it doesn't understand a single thing that it's saying. the word "intelligence" is misleading and vague imo, since the computer doesn't "know" what an apple is. it just knows what humans usually say in response to "what is an apple" based on the text it has ingested from the internet. and god, we really need to correct misinformation about AI functioning like a human brain and other stuff like that.
I also feel like we're getting ahead of ourselves in these conversations, like imagining what terrible things AI might do instead of figuring out what to do right now. we should all advocate really hard to pause and focus on things that we could actually change, like limitations on the datasets that train these computers. I get that it's super scary to imagine AI taking jobs and becoming an evil force in the world, but I feel like that broad view is really missing the specific points about what we can do to combat AI misuse. social media companies were allowed to invade our privacy and use our data unchecked for a very long time (and they still are) so knowing that, we should push to impose limitations on that data for both privacy and copyright reasons! I think using data they've scraped without permission is 100% copyright infringement and I'm really hoping for some favorable court decisions that will set the precedent that it's not fair use.

I'm so glad someone finally said that, I still cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on with all of the fearmongering around AI (the actual "gaining sentience" kind, I understand why e.g. artists are mad at AI). LLMs like ChatGPT are basically just (complex) text generators and (some) people were freaking the fuck out over it.
I don't understand the stupid "AI said it will control/kill/whatever-bad-word humanity", "AI said this and that" clickbait bullshit that people are eating up. Our current "AI"s don't understand what the fuck they're saying. Guys like Musk (whose Neurolink I still find way more questionable and dangerous, btw) and that one ex-Google-employee jumping on the fearmonger train while not really providing any information as to HOW exactly these AIs that are actually intelligent in a human sense would even function and never providing any specifics, but rather just throwing out scary-sounding buzzwords left and right and seemingly not touching on the actual, current issues we have with AI right now.
And yeah, why is everyone scared of AI, if it ever even comes into being, becoming evil? Can we not have safety measures? Like in the end it's still just something powered by electricity and all kinds of technology that can fail (or be brought to failure).
For us humans, our thoughts etc. tie heavily into our biology - hormones, DNA etc. - an AI doesn't have that. How would a machine without biology "think"? You could probably argue that we become greedy, hateful etc. because of our biology, so why would AI, something without biology, act like we do?
This reminds me of when I saw someone play Detroid become Human and let ChatGPT make the choices and in the comments people were like "oh, it makes sense it would choose the cold, logical path..." like no, ChatGPT isn't choosing shit. It doesn't know what it's saying, for fuck's sake. It doesn't even know what the words "cold" and "logical" mean, let alone anything else it's spitting out.
In a way it's almost fascinating how you can just throw out THE most surface-level information about something and people will come up with the most crazy Sci-Fi scenarios about how it will end us.

AI isnt intelligent; it simply performs number calculations and some other text prediction stuff.
I think intelligence shouldnt be measured by what you can do, but how you can grow and learn; AI /cannot/ learn.
AI cannot learn in a conventional sense; if I put 20 pictures in front of a robot capable of processing jpegs, the robot will not be able to create a jpeg. I have to code it to observe the features of each of the jpeg, and then code it to create an image. I have to teach it how to do those things.
AI cannot learn. it can only be taught how to parse information.
so HOW is that intelligence?
intelligence should be classified by your ability to make sense and learn about new topics-- it should be defined by your ability to problem solve.
AI cannot solve problems. they can just assess them and regurgitate a pre-programmed solution.
As a newbie of the art community, I hope artists will be done justice. I hope that their creativity as wonderful, complex, human beings, with true experiences and emotions, will be more valued and win over AI. And that applies to anyone who expresses their emotions, and themselves, through any kind of form, and is threatened by being replaced with a robot's souless, empty work.

As a lifelong artist, I strongly disagree with the common rhetoric treating AI as some kind of evil entity that must be fought against. I believe it's born from severe misunderstandings about what AI art really is and how generative art tools can be used. I am happy to discuss my perspective with you if you want.

I will just carry on with my silly flawed human-made art. What I appreciate about this video is how it makes an honest attempt at both taking the threats seriously AND also questioning if the fear has possibly gone too far. Personally I don't think art or even digital art are dead, what I do believe is that it's going to be another excuse to demand more efficiency for less pay across all the affected industries, even in cases where the new tools may not magically speeding things up by as much as they think.

I am highly concerned about AI under our finance capital system, will be used against people instead of helping(increasing accessibility). We have known for some time how oppressive and insidious white supremacy is and I feel AI upholds this status quo. The status quo of white supremacy (the power system/social structures) and its control mechanism of culturalist, ableism, classism, sexism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia. Knowing how much corporations etc hate paying people what they are worth, and a political system that hates oppressed populations, AI is something that should concern us all.
I think that is why Elon etc are so afraid of it because in hierarchy indoctrination when one is "better" they get control... ofc that's not right but AI works with what is given and that justification of abuse is such a given as u said

Your video essays are so creative, thought compelling and interesting. Could AI replace what you make, what you make me feel and ponder? No way! AI should be a tool to help, like with editing and such, not be used to replace creators. I live in Japan, and here, the sale of AI generated images was made illegal. You can make those images and post them online, but you cant sell them.
In the US our Copyright Office has ruled that you can make the images using AI but you cannot own the copyright to them, because writing a prompt isn’t sufficient to meet the legal standard for ownership. That means corporations probably won’t use the current image generators. It’s a pretty significant legal decision. Imagine if a court ruled that you couldn’t own copyright in any document you wrote in Microsoft Word- then nobody would use Word. Of course that’s not the case- you’re still an author of a story you write in Word. But the difference is that typing a short prompt into AI image generator doesn’t make you the artist

I have an AI that boils eggs for me! I guess technically it's an appliance, but it knows when the eggs are done and I like calling it EggBot 😂 I bought it at a second hand store for $6 and it's amazing. It uses maybe a few tablespoons of water and is done in under 15 minutes with much less waste heat.
AI has shown us just how quickly people are willing to use new technology to screw creatives over - artists, writers, anyone who requires a salary that could be cut out of the budget by replacing their incredible content with free knock-offs. I don't fear AI. I fear what humans with AI will do, because we have already proven how little we care about harming other humans with this or any other tool at our disposal.
My point, I am not scared of AI. I sm scares, as always, of people, it's a powerful tool with many possibilities for good and for bad.
That's why I wish AI becomes sentient, what can be worse than humans? Just give them life so they doom us all or whatever
About the AI question with art, my sister and I have a different opinions.
My sister believes that the fact that we can make art with AIs democratises art in a certain way, a field that is basically elitist and to which few have access. So she says "yeah thats great for people and they can enjoy art through their own vision without the need of skills". She also thinks that when artists publish their work, unless it's on a platform that protects the rights of others (not insta or pinterest lol), well that's a risk. Also, she thinks it's up to people who use AI to find out about the provenance of each pieces of work, used to create the AI artwork.
As an artist I have a much less positive view of the matter: I understand this approach and agree with it but I can't help but feel bad for the work, time, energy, esteem, and skills that went into certain works or creations that ended up being stolen/used. I know people and how much they don't care: they'll never try to find out how many works were used to get the creation they have in front of them.
And just the morals behind it are questionable..I just hope some laws or some measures will be taken to better protect the work of artists.
This argument about democratization: I see it again, and again. It’s not really valid. What exactly, needed to be liberated, so badly? It wasn’t learning resources, because TH-cam itself is overflowing with excellent free tutorials. It wasn’t tools, because even a simple, ballpoint pen, and a scrap of paper is enough to get started. Obviously, anyone who can afford Ai software subscriptions and internet access, could have downloaded the multiple free digital art platforms available online.
So, was it time requirement? Everything worth learning requires time.. Have we really reached the point where we DON’T actually want to internalize skill? Skill, which will remain in your brain and muscle memory, whenever you step away from a device? 90% of these people will see only miniscule improvement in actual ability, the moment you take away their Ai software. Having a good curator’s eye, is probably the most it will grant them. Meanwhile, most digital artists would still able to create, even if you remove their computers, because they learned key fundamentals.
At its core, the excuse boils down to laziness and greed. The ones most excited to use it, invariably are plugging in the names of artists and authors, to skinwalk the veneer of success. The mere fact, so many grifters, even on Etsy, don’t openly advertise they are using Ai, shows they know it’s innately less valuable.
I do think Ai can be used as a tool for artists, but it’s so obvious that’s not how these companies prioritized the release of this tech. Just look at how Adobe has stabbed their own userbase ( of decades ), in the back.

I hate the democratization argument, people are just too lazy to learn how to produce art. They assume that artists are born with innate abilities to create art, and it is impossible to learn, so it can justify their laziness and their unwillingness to try to learn. If you want to make something you have to learn how to make it. I also find the entitlement of being able to make art, without putting in the work to be so annoying. No one is stopping anyone from producing any art. There have been countless artists/writers who make art/comics/animation/books/games without the skills to make it, and eventually, they do learn those skills and improve. No one became an artist overnight, even so-called prodigies still had to put some effort in to learn their craft. I find art to be one of the most accessible mediums, anyone can learn art there are so many resources and tools available, many of them which are free. You need a digital art program there are so many open-source programs just as advanced as commercial products. Heck, there's even a free clone of Photoshop available online. You can buy good digital tablets for under $30. Go traditional and you can literally start with a pen/pencil and paper. I think the real problem for these defenders is that they want to create something instantly, and get the same amount of praise. I love that I can produce art, and I can make anything I want, even if it takes hours.

But even if we are talking about someone who could, eventually, learn them, I fail to see why we should require such a large investment into acquiring technical skills for something that is supposed to be about expressing one's creativity. Almost everyone can learn to play a number of instruments with a lot of time and effort, but modern music software allows one to produce a song without having to do so. Do you see that as a bad thing, as well?
I use Chat GPT almost everyday. I love using it to organize information. I also use it when I draw tarot cards. I like to input my readings and ask for patterns and see if there was anything it thought I overlooked or if it thinks I should expand upon a subject.

The point about stagnation is such an important one. The current economical system thrives on stagnation. An endless stream of new versions of the same old stuff, sold in a different packaging at a slightly higher price point. Efficiency equals selling more and more with less and less effort.
Ai art has effected my outlook as an artist but I feel like me and my friends will always still have an appreciation for the art that came from my real hand which has so much life behind it

I know now that it's okay for me to draw just for fun, but it's the most crushing feeling in the world to have your lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist completely crushed in a few weeks' time.

I am someone who does a lot of creative things (mainly writing but I also draw every once in a while). When I first heard of Chat GPT I felt this sense of despair. For me, my writing abilities were my asset and something I spent years of my life building up even if I never intended for it to be. The idea that my skills would no longer be necessary because a computer could do it instead was just painful. I really understand the frustration of many creative people but then I paused and I thought about it.
We look at AI so destructively, we ignore its benefits and think of it as something that takes away our livelihoods and our purpose for living even but this is mainly just fear. We're afraid our talents will be obsolete and that they'll no longer matter. On this point I want to disagree. AI won't mean the end of creatives. Just like with the panic about calculators and photographs, in the future these things can co-exist. There will always be more opportunities and as artists I think we should all take a moment to remember why we started in the first place. I don't know if these words will reach anyone but anger and fear won't serve us any purpose. We have to look forward and realise that this advancement is no different from anything else.
Anger, fear, protest: Yes, they do matter. Both artists and the general public, should’ve had more say in the release of this technology. A small subset of tech entrepreneurs and engineers should not speak for everyone. There’s no reason to just surrender and take it, lying down.
Yes, the tech is now here to stay, but it doesn’t mean it should be left unregulated.
If everyone can sudden “create” 300+ Davinci paintings in minutes, what value will digital art even have? Monetary or symbolically? Realistically, will the average viewer even care anymore? Not likely. ..there’s nothing good about numbing people to the struggle and journey of art. Traditional media may continue to exist, and possibly rise in value, but let’s be real- we live in a digitally oriented world, so the effect here, is extremely skewed. Traditional artists also need to market themselves online, and there are few ways to protect themselves from getting scraped, outside of programs like Glaze.

People won't stop making art, but we may stop being paid for it, and under capitalism, money is time, which means less time to do what we love. And that sucks. I think AI could be an awesome creative tool, but I worry that it will be wielded to minimize cost and maximize profit, and that art - and artists and other creatives - will suffer for that penny-pinching motive. We're already suffering under excessive copyright periods and the current deluge of remakes and milquetoast derivative storytelling. Yes, there is still great art being made, but we all need to eat and pay rent, so if creative jobs start going to AI, we'll need to find other work, probably not creative. Which, again, sucks.

I'm a professional potter and when AI art started getting big all of my pals smugly remarked that ceramics were safe from AI. However, ceramics have been made by machines for a long long time and the industry has still survived but is fairly rare and very expensive. I'm curious if this is the future for writers and 2d artists

My stance on AI is ismilar to other artists, I cannot condone a tool that has literally trained on stolen art. It's also annoying to see folks trying to claim they are artists, when they literally just give a AI a prompt. I think the only AI artists are those folks who actually add on to the generated image, and create something new, not someone who literally just threw the prompt hot anime girl with blue hair into a generator and is now claiming they spend hours on their artwork, and drew it themselves. Art is a skill like anything else, and should be learned. And besides with so many free resources available online, and the low cost of good digital tablets in the present, I think learning to draw is much more accessible. I hate that corporations are tying to replace artists with AI and already exploit and underpay them. We know coporporations like to weaponize creators's passion for the arts, and the scarcity of jobs, by basically pressuring them to work 16 hours days to be a good team player and also to secure their jobs. They already treat artists like machines.
AI also adopts the biases of their programmers, which is huge problem, because you basically get racist/sexist notions built into AI, when ideally it should be more neutral because it's not a human.
Honestly I missed the days when AI was more of a tool, and it focused on things like filters, reproducing classic art which was already in the public domain, or creating useful things for artist like making busts of imaginary humans, or being able to create multiple angles of a photo/or illustration. Those were much more harmless and useful of AI, and didn't step on other artists' toes. I remember these tools were often recommended by artists, and were useful.
I know people like that AI has allowed people to make portraits of characters for free, but at the same time, there are so many avatar/portait makers freely available that are made by artists. There's also a lot of templates/bases out there for people to edit and make their own characters. On top of this I know a ton of artists who are just willing to make art for free or very cheaply, if they get excited about a prompt/idea.
I'm no programmer, but I did study game design, and do know how to code. Quite frankly I still think all the doom and gloom of AI actually achieving human intelligence to be ridiculous. Computers are stupid. They need very clear instructions, and throw fits over things like capitalization and stray commas. I think about AI in videogames, that often have very limited functions (like being able to follow enemies) and they still mess up, even as complex as AI is. I certainly wouldn''t want AI to drive a car. I doubt we'll ever see the day when AI is able to replicate human speech/decision making without being heavily scripted. The only time I ever thought any chatbots sounded even remotely human like, was because the creators had written a ton of scripts/responses themselves. Often the ilustion is broken only after after a few minutes. I much prefer those silly Personality Forge chatbots, over watching corporations trying to replace coders, cs workers, artistw, and writers with AI.
I will never let AI art take my love away from a craft I so lovingly put my everything into. Don't let AI put you down, all types of artist included. Writing, music, fine arts, etc. Keep drawing, remixing, novel writing, and don't let hopelessness drive you away.
I feel that an interesting aspect of this idea of "replacement" is how much it clearly shows how much competition for survival has been structurally integrated at all levels of our society. If I feel like the Beatles or whomever are the best of all times, does that mean that music should stop, that nobody else should ever dare to play anything else, much less make a career out of it? No, of course not. When I play music, it is meaningful and interesting, and therefore "valuable", because I'm the one doing right here and now, regardless of how "good" or "new" it is. Sure, art that manages to be original or insightful is justly felt to be more meaningful, but that isn't a requirement for it to be art. Therefore, even if AI eventually cracked the art code and managed to be the "best" artist ever, why should we feel differently about it than we would for human "best artists"? I make art because I want to, regardless of how much "better" someone else might be at it, human or AI. The idea of replacement is only born from a context that makes art, and work in general, function like a competition for survival, where only some are selected to thrive (often via dubious criteria... Cough cough capitalism cough...) while the others are left not only in a rough spot economically, but also with this insidious brand of "not good enough", as if wanting to participate in art and work could only be meaningful and appropriate when arbitrary standards are met. So I feel that the conversation about AI should also include a conversation about how badly we're currently handling the concept of "worth". I mean, honestly, people genuinely claiming the death of human art because they could make more money out of AI art is such an admission of how little understanding and appreciation of humanity and of its lived experience hypercapitalism has...
I wish I could give this more than one like! Your point about our messed-up concept of "worth" is spot on. Art doesn't have to be perfect, or even good (whatever those words mean), to be worthwhile and worthy. I think nowadays so many people believe that nothing short of excellence deserves praise or approval. This mindset is exemplified by the positivity bias in social media, where filters enhance an already highly selected image. People see amazing content and think they have to be just as good-right now!-or they're nothing, and nobody will ever care or even notice them. Maybe to them AI is just another filter, so they don't think about how it was made by feeding an algorithm millions and millions of images (or text samples, or audio files) without asking permission from the creator.

I'm a lifelong artist who is happy to embrace this new tool. I am also educated on machine learning and have coded generative models myself. I don't believe that using online material for training data is unethical, but I can understand why others can believe it is. I'm happy to have the "AI debate" with you if you're willing to hear me out.
They are literally art thieves because they are taking credit for what the model produces. Idc what you say. Even if you're not just prompting and using something like controlNet, you're effectively commissioning the model with a detailed description and maybe some small example sketches. You don't have as much control as you would have if you drew things yourself. No you didn't draw that. StableDiffusion, Midjourney or DALL-E 'drew' it for you.

Part of me wants to embrace AI in general or, at least, in certain ways, but the fact that AI art, specifically, pulls from copyrighted works, that part really bothers me. I don't have a solution to this other than a system where only artists who consent to their art being used are the ones being used?

I tried using to find some details about the movie Iron Man's production over the course of 2007 and 2008 and how it was affected by the writers strike back then. I was trying to see if i could find some articles from then that I wasn't doing all that well finding on my own. it gave me some articles and titles, I tried going to them, they didn't exist. I thought ok, maybe they existed at one point but got deleted due to time or something. so i threw the links in the waybackmachine, and still didn't find anything. Just thought that was kind of weird. that's it, just wanted to back up this point right here with ancedotal experience to attest that this might have some issues.

The way I see it, art will be among the first things completely overtook by ai, but art as general is in my opinion supposed to be a source of joy for artists. That said, art will become absolutely private and just a form of self therapy. Think of it as a yoga or meditating. No one will ever care enough to take a look on someone's else's art which is absolutely sad to me but I personally think that's likely to happen.
As someone with a learning disability AI has helped me communicate in ways that has opened doors for me and my neurospicy community. AI is a tool and all tools can be used as weapons, especially by the system. The lost jobs of "human calculators" that were replaced by computers are not mourned today. People today still have passion for creating new ways to computing, and some of them are turning it into AI. We will not go back to not having AI, regardless if we fear or embrace it, it will only serve us through understanding it and using it with intention.

Like seriously, are we just gonna ignore the decades of racism, ableism, and the sick smoothie of other prejudices that the legal system has been drenched in for all of its existence??? AI has really done a number on my partner's (an artist) mental state, especially the techbro reactions declaring traditional art dead and AI art the future. Personally, I think its just another vastly overhyped product, a la ChatGPT. Lauded as the downfall of my own career (a historian) I have to admit I was mostly puzzled why people even thought such a program could ever send any academic out of work, let alone a highly multilingual field such as history.
I work in 5 modern languages (and 3 dead ones), often need colleagues to do some translations on the ones I do not master because that does not at all cover all the literature. I'm sure that in time such a program could at least master those languages, but access the material, the vast majority of which is undigitized and/or paywalled, and then comprehand all of that as well. And then still crank out a coherent essay that analyses the material and comes up with something new - hilarious.
