Hi Stacy, I’m currently coming the the end of week 5 from partial rupture. Initially I was placed on a cast for 4 week’s, at the beginning of week 5 I went in to get the cast removed and placed on a boot with 3 wedges. I was told not to put any weight the next 2 week’s on the boot. From week 1 of my sitting on the couch I’ve been watching ton’s of video’s of other ppl going thru this issue and as it comes to no surprise just about everyone encourage early weight bearing after at least week 2. Now that I’m on a boot, I cautiously place limited weight on my injured foot and feel no pain at all. The following day, I woke up pain free. So this encourage me to keep going partial weight bering. I decided to hope on my Rogue Echo bike and push thru the heel but with consciously kicking my good leg on over drive, but still keeping a slow place during my workout. I felt very slightly burn on my heel but really nothing that was concerning. The following morning I woke up with no pain / soreness what so ever. I’ve been using my Rogue Echo bike for 3 day’s now being on a conservative side, will say it’s safe to say I can continue going this route?
I would make sure that you are not going through a full range of motion with your foot. You do not want to go past neutral and increase dorsiflexion until 12 weeks post repair.
Hi. Not sure if it was you because I've watched alot of videos. But I believe it was in one of your videos that you mentioned a device (looked like an ankle brace with a strap that limits plantar flexion and something else that limits dorsiflexion) that would control ankle movement so you didn't have to wear your boot when you were sleeping. Don't see it on your Amazon list. I apologize if I saw it somewhere else. Thanks
Great job keep up the good work. When I transitioned out of my boot, I used a compression type of ankle sleeve. Helped with swelling that can occur when going back to walking. Also it made shoes feel more comfortable.
Thank you! I am wearing a compression sock(s) and that definitely helps with the swelling but I am not sure if it helps so much with the rubbing on the scar area. It will get better though, just takes time. Thank you for your continued support!
really helpful video thank you. i am week 5 since my rupture. my physician and opted for the conservative route. I have 3 1cm wedges remiaing in the boot. the pain for 24 hours each time i remove the wedge is awful. apart from that i am feeling stronger each day but i was shocked to see you in the gym with no boot on. i feel ages away from that even though i can fully weight bare in the boot. i see my (private) doctor in 3 weeks when i am hoping i will be wedge free and very hopeful he will ok me removing the boot for at least some of the time
I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this injury! That is great that you are removing wedges just take your time and don't push it too much especially on the rough days. Just take it one day at a time, YOU GOT THIS!
I found this series through your FB Achilles Tendon Rupture group post the other day. Its awesome! I am week 5 post OP and have been having a horrible time trying to sleep in my boot. Honestly sometimes I just rip it off in the middle of the night so I can sleep for a while. Hearing a PT going through the same experience and be so honest about it makes me feel much better! Did you have any experience any plantar faciitis during your recovery? Thank you!!
I am sorry you are going through this injury! It is definitely not an easy recovery! Yes, I did! It seems to be common with this injury/recovery. I am happy to share my journey as long as it is helping others!
I am on week 5, but my physiotherapist said that i should not train my foot till I have taken off the boot and that is 14.11. Should I listen to her or should I train it earlier, becuase I have seen many people on youtube train earlier. I want recovery fast as possible.
The jumps can be huge! I felt my transition was smooth regarding boot angle and progressed 10 deg each week. I feel like the transition from boot into a sneaker could be laid out better - almost like we wean into orthotics (1 hour first day…2 hours second day, etc) and maybe into sneaker for PT. I feel like Ohio state and UW have pretty good protocols compared to the one I got. Either way you’re crushing it. Keep up the good work!
Progressions would be so much better than big jumps! Definitely need to make changes in the Achilles recovery protocol and thank you! Just taking it one day at a time!
Currently 5.5 weeks post op. Your Achilles series has been so helpful in my recovery. Question - With 7 degrees of DF at 5 weeks, was there any concern of healing long, especially since it’s well before the 12 week period?
I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this injury but glad to hear that my videos are helping you! I would hold off on working any DF right now and not go past neutral. If you are walking I would not do so not in a boot as even walking takes you past neutral regarding DF. I am wishing you all the best in your recovery and please know that I am here for you if you need it!
This videos are helpful. I’m two weeks today recovering. I just got my walking boot today. I saw you had a couple of resourceful items in your amazon recovery list. Did you use night splint & compression socks and when is the earliest you think?
I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this right now! I definitely used all the things in my Amazon list and you have to go by how you feel. Everyone had a different recovery so I suggest listening to your body and doing what works best for you
Great Video. I am feeling what you were feeling at that time. I am in week 6 and I went from Vecoped 2 to 0. Way too sore, so went to 1 and will try that for a week before going to neutral. When you were wearing the Vecoped when did you switch to the flat sole, at neutral? Also the bottom of my foot is a mess with blisters from being in a boot this long. any tips on foot care while in Boot?
Really informative video! I'm coming towards the end of week 5 (UK/NHS). At week 4, the NHS protocol just says 'week 4 - can fully weight bear when able' which is a little vague. As you say, definitely trying to do it gradually and find that point between feeling it pull but not going too far. We don't go back to the consultant here until week 8, so no one is able to confirm whether it has reattached. Do you think if you can feel that pull, presumably it has reattached?! Definitely with you on the throbbing heel too, we use CAM boots here and with more weight bearing comes blisters which isn't fun! Loved seeing you walk your dog, that was the little lift I needed this morning! This was a few months ago so hoping you're all fully healed now 😊
Hey Liz, sorry about the Achilles injury. If you went the non-op route, it may have reattached but the stretching could also be from the joint being pointed for a while. If you had surgery, they reconstructed the tendon there so the pulling may just be from your body getting used to that new length/load. The boot is soooo uncomfortable and thank you! I love being able to walk my dogs! I am not 100% yet but I am getting stronger everyday! I hope your recovery is going well!
I was able to walk this early because I was working closely with my physical therapist to create an Achilles recovery protocol that was specific to me and my procedure. I did a lot of research to help create my own protocol and I also consulted with my surgeon regarding weight bearing, walking, etc. Everyone is different so I recommend working with your physical therapist and surgeon.
Hello, thank you for your videos. I have a high grade tear on my Achillies. My doctor will put a hard cast to isolate my ankle. He mentioned crutches, but I am seeing lots of videos people wearing walking cast. He told me 8 week’s waiting period… do you agree with those conditions?
Hello! I am glad that you found my videos! Each recovery is different and different protocols would be involved depending on the specific person and injury. I wish you all the best in your recovery! Remember to take it day by day and sometimes even minute by minute! You got this!
Yes, I wore an even-up on my non injured foot as it helped me quite a bit! I did not have nearly as much pain in my hips, low back and ankle when I wore it. definitely evened me up! lol
I from the Netherlands. My doc doesnt use the boot. Im in week 3 cast with a big sole so that i can walk with crutches. They cut off the first cast after a week and put it in a new one. Now i have the 3rd cast. At week 7 the cast will come off fully. Still little scared to put weight on my leg but getting there! How are you now after a year?
I am sorry you are going through this injury! A year plus a little more out and I am doing great! I completely understand the fear but start of slowly and build your confidence. You can do it and I am here for you!
I am sorry to hear that you are going through this injury as well! I had swelling for a long time! I would say almost until 9-10 month post op I would still have some welling by the end of the day. You got this!!!
Thank you for reaching out to ask this! You do not heal long with weight bearing. You will heal long if you start to stretch and force dorsiflexion too soon. I am not pushing the dorsiflexion so I will not heal long.
Not sure if you know this...but you are a motivator for people going through this difficult time. Thnx for posting 👍‼️
I appreciate that! I am glad I am able to help by sharing my story!

Always great to see how much progress you are making each week!
Thank you Ben! Some days it does not seem like much but then it is always nice to look back and see the progress.
@@ThePhysioFix I bet! Those days are tough, but it’s cool how you are documenting everything so you can see how far you’ve come!
