Youre a Queen girl. I broke my achilles in Slovakia in June this year and i passed by the airport in Austria and Ethiopia on crutches. It was really a problem, i did my surgery in Seychelles at my final destination the next day i arrived. I did 6 weeks in cast it was my worst year in my life.2023

Thank you! I am sorry to see that you went through this injury as well! It was definitely not an easy road to recovery but all of the hard work was worth it in the end!

I ruptured my Achilles (full rupture) Sept. 15. Doctor told me I was a candidate for non-operative healing. I was in a cast, non-weight bearing for two weeks. On Oct. 11, I fell on my foot and unfortunately was not wearing my aircast which saw me undergo Achilles repair surgery on Oct. 18. Spent three weeks non-weight bearing and have been in an aircast with three heal wedges since Nov. 7. The protocol given to me says assisted weight bearing, which I did for about a week. I live in a small basement apartment which makes crutching and even i walk-ing difficult. So I have been walking with the aircast, being careful not to put too much weight on my injured leg for short bouts. Longer walks, I defer to the crutches. I ice several times a day and do small eversion, inversion, dorsi and plantar flexion exercises, as well as hip flexion strengthening, knee extension, leg raise and hip abduction/adduction (I know this is getting long, I apologize). I am wondering, is walking in an aircast at this point (again with the three wedges) screwing up my recovery?

I can commiserate. I flew from Germany to Boston at week 4 postop Achilles, checked the scooter, and used the wheelchair assistance. I had my crutches thankfully, so I could access bathrooms, etc, but the lack of independence was SO frustrating.

That had to be hard! That is a long flight and to be reliant on others could not have made it easier! I am so sorry you had to go through this injury too! It is definitely not fun and I hope you are back to the activities that you enjoy!

Traveling inured sounds really challenging! Glad you were able to navigate that.

Is it okay to dorsiflex before 12 weeks?? I've seen a lot of information claiming that will lead to the risk of healing long

Surgery is the easy part. They knock you out, and you wake back up in a cast.

I am sorry that you are having so much pain! You need to do what is best for you. Listen to your body, your care team and go the route that will be the best for you and your injury.

Hi Dr. Barber, I surely appreciate your videos. Thank you!
I am at week 5 post surgery and struggle sleeping at night with the boot. You mentioned the splint for nighttime. I have all my wedges in my boot, is it too early to consider a splint? I am still in plantar flexion with no dorsiflexion.
    Any insight appreciated…

I am so sorry that I am just seeing this! How is recovery going?

Hello, thank you for your video. I had a major tear, and was on a cast for 3 weeks. I have now graduated to cam walker, but walking a great deal. I don’t feel any pain on my Achillies , but will not stretch it before 12 weeks. If you don’t wear your boot, did you feel stiffness ? Did you do your own PT? I am debating if should do my own? All the things I have seen, I think I can do my own. When did you start jogging?

Sorry to hear you are going through this injury! I did not do my own rehab as I have a great team of physio therapists around me. I would not suggest doing it on your own as you will not be able to see the big picture and work on all the little things that others may see. My Achilles was definitely stiff and did not feel "normal" for close to a year post repair. Definitely do not push dorsiflexion until after 12 weeks as you do not want to heal long. I am not much of a runner but I was able to start to "jog" around 24 weeks while wearing Hoka's as they have a rocker bottom and a 12mm drop. It was not until later on that I was able to run in regular shoes.

Thank you so much!!! I will probably get my doctor opinion too (probably same as what you suggested). I have a big Grand Canyon event next September, so very eager to move fast..

I do not wish this on anyone but I am using it as a learning experience and to help me with my patients.
