    Thanks for thoroughly explaining how you "get away with" two chains to one set of sprockets. I've always heard replace both and still agree with that in general however the way you stated everything made complete sense! Also have never heard the 16 pin/10.1 in. measurement. This was great! Thanks for the vid!

    I would say this is one of the best video riveting the masterlink on the chain. I'm very particular with my work and I like the idea of using a caliper on the rivet flare and so with the exact measurement of the chain width.

    The best chain replacing lecture I've found anywhere on the internet. Thank God I found this video before I started popping rivets and breaking links. The digital micrometer caliper could save you damage, or your life. More specifically, as outlined in the video, the width of the master link plates and diameter of the newly mushroomed rivet. If you can't understand those instructions you'd be better off taking it to the dealer or MC mechanic. Even if you do use a mechanic I'd still get a digital micrometer caliper and double check the measurements on the newly mushroomed master link rivets and the link plate width.

    Lots of good info, I too am a tool freak and want the best I can buy, but the chain breaker/riveter doesn't have to be the top of the line model from Motion Pro, I bought the entry level model (08-467) because I needed one fast and the motorcycle shop only had that one in stock. I found it performed quite well and it is well built. I'm sure the mid and top models (08-470 and 08-135) are more suited for the day to day use of a motorcycle shop, but for a bike owner who changes a chain once a year or once every two years, the base model will work.

    This is one of the better chain install vids. One trick I'd like to add is if your front sprocket cover is a pain to remove, you can easily install the new chain without removing the sprocket cover by connecting it to the old one above the swingarm using the new master link. Then pull the old chain below the swingarm until the new chain has rounded the front sprocket and come far enough to grab to connect with the other end. Another thing, the example of the cheapo tool shown, which looks like the Stockton one Cycle Gear often sells for $40, is actually quite good IMO. I've had mine quite a while and it looks like its got lots of changes left in it.

    A very well done and informative video. Tech support at JT Chains recommends 5.5 to 5.6 as final number in riveting. 5.7 max...more will likely break the chain and not in a good way! Thanks again, David

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wish more chains would publish their final riviting number. It's why I like the 0.5 - 0.7 flair above the unflaired pin. So if the pin is 5.0, flair to 5.5 - which is ocnsistent with what JT chains recommended. But some other brand chains will have different flair numbers. It's a little frustrating.

    As for cutting the new chain, if you are not changing gear ratio or chain size, then just count links on your old chain and duplicate on the new chain. Even better, if you purchase chain and sprockets from Sprocket Center, then they will size the chain for you based on gear ration selected.
    I always suggest replacing chain and both sprockets as a matched set to get he most life and smoothest feel out of the drivetrain.

      @@CanyonChasers What do you think about the Vstrom? I know where there is an almost new 2015 DL 1000. Less than 100 miles... (one hundred miles). He is asking $7,800. I say this because as of today, two more BMW shops are going out of business. It will be a long way for me to trailer a bike should I need to. After watching your video and learning about taking care of chains, it does not seem to be all that bad. Since my 800 mile days are long gone, and I just want something to hop on and get the cob-webs cleared the 1000 V strom makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I want a 1250GS. Being retired I do not know how I could come up with that much money.

    Great vid but an important point: At 7:40 he says 'typically' flare is between 0.5mm to 0.7mm. Emphasis on the word 'typically' as not all rivets are the same and for some rivets the flare is MUCH less than this. By trying to achieve 0.5mm on some rivets you will split the rivet and have to start again.

    When I was newish to bikes I bought an R1 and didn't observe the chain dying. It did exactly what you described, it didn't straighten out, went around the front sprocket which only has a minimal clearance, and buried itself into the stater casing, locked the rear wheel going 60mph and almost dumped it. Def. keep an eye on your chain!
    Thanks for the how-to, I got 2 bikes I need to replace the chain on and so far I've either sold bikes before I needed to do the chain, or had a shop do it, so this will be interesting. I think my chain tool is one of the cheaper ones you mentioned though, so we'll see how this goes.... Bought it like 3 years ago so too late to return now, lol.

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raptorpome2577 IDK if I watched additional videos or not, but I did the chain on one of the bikes and it was pretty straight forward. Other bike is still in pieces. I mainly just followed the directions that came with the cheapo tool for which pieces to use to break the old one, which to press the pin back on, etc. It was pretty self explanatory looking at the pictures and the pieces. Basically just 1 setup to press the old one out, a different setup to press the new one in.
      This was years ago at this point, I think I had a couple small problems to watch out for:
      1. I bent the pin on the tool which presses the new pin into the chain, think I got a replacement for cheap on ebay or something. Happened because the tool wasn't completely straight on there when I was torquing it down against one of the links, so make sure it's straight.
      2. I pressed it in a hair too far and I think I flipped it around and pushed it back out a hair until it was balanced.
      3. I think I got the sizing mixed up and had to remove an extra link after I got the new one pressed on.
      Been awhile so I can't quite recall, but it was pretty straight forward with the directions + the cheap tool I had from Amazon or whatever. I didn't struggle much.

    If you get a smaller or bigger sprocket, be sure to check your adjuster before you do it. One time, I got a smaller sprocket for a fourwheeler. I ended up needing a chain that was a link shorter, but when you shorten a chain, it goes two links at a time or else you can't put the master link back on. I ran out of slack on my chain adjuster.

    Of course if you already have the angle grinder you can save yourself some time and just cut the old chain off. Also another thing that saves some effort is finding out the exact length of your chain and simply buying one with the exact number of links. If you are running stock sprocket sizes this info is usually easy to find and most bike specific forums will have data for chain length if you've changed sprocket sizes as well.

    Just did this today using the Stockton kit and man with the Stockton chain break chain rivet kit you need to have a soft touch because the tools to push out the old rivet and install mushroom the new one WILL bend or break if your not 100% accurate and slow. The chain tool he has seems fool proof way more durable looking than the Stockton. $40 kit i bought down the drain.
