    I've thought about suggesting it in the past... now you've got many many hours of fiberglass work ahead - in Florida heat no less - you should check out a Cool Suit / Cool Shirt / Cool Pants... They are popular in racing where drivers have to wear firesuits in the summer. The expense is trivial in the grand scheme of things and, feels like not turning a tyvek suit into a personal swiming pool would be worth the nuisance of dealing with dragging a couple water lines around. Obviously you could modify and customize the chiller/pump side to be more appropriate at a worksite instead of a racecar. Might even be really nice to wear when you aren't in tyvek.

    glass fibre reinforced plastics as we know them so nicely, are extremely strong. But a very big disadvantage is that they do not tolerate point loads. therefore be careful when removing the aluminium profiles. they redistribute these point loads in the glass fibre. to think about.

    I have extensively used the local equivalent of Coosa board and it is excellent. If you consistently use it throughout the rebuild you will save substantial weight. If nothing else you save huge amounts of epoxy, paint and TIME sealing up plywood.

    • @markthomasson5077
      @markthomasson5077 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What is it? In fact what is Coosa

    • @philipwilkie3239
      @philipwilkie3239 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@markthomasson5077 Coosa panels consist of high density polyurethane foam reinforced with layers of fibreglass. They are stronger than the equivalent thickness of marine ply, and about 2/3rd the weight. The big upsides are zero water absorption and less work. The purchase price is about 30% higher but this is more than offset by the need for less epoxy sealers, paint and labour. I usually just put on two coats of single pack polyurethane for cosmetic reasons - fast and easy.
      It cuts and works like timber, but it is a little more abrasive and the dust has a glass content that is a bit itchy. And while it will take a thread OK - for high loads or repeated removals some form of threaded insert is advisable.

    • @markthomasson5077

    Hey Mads. You might like to check out using basalt fiber instead of fiber glass. It is more expensive, but stronger, around comparable to s-glass, so you need less.
    But the big thing is that it is non-toxic.
    Maybe less itchy too?
    Of course, you still have the hassles of the epoxy, but it is way less hazardous in itself than fiber glass.
    It is also UV resistant.

    You probably have 1708, which is also known as "combo mat" in other places. It does indeed come in sizes like 800/400g. I brought some down to central america with me, and some local fiberglassers cannot get enough of it. While you don't need to use with epoxy, it makes it REALLY EASY to lay 3-4 layers at a time without bubbles.
    1708 is 45/45 biaxal with matt. (17oz biax 8oz mat)
    1808 is 0/90 biaxial with matt
    If you're looking to build something really strong (with any resin, doesnt matter) and get some thickness built up fast, this is a GREAT way to do it. And a complete novice can lay it without bubbles. Very user friendly.

  • @kankama1
    @kankama1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Gday Mads - a couple of things from my multi builds. 1 - try and keep the weight out of the ends - both ends. You will put stuff in the ends but don't think like a mono sailor anymore - think light. My 38ft cat has lovely motion offshore because it was built with the mindset of keeping weight centralised. Increasing rotational inertia is not a good thing in multis so wherever possible get weighty objects towards the centre.
    2 - if you are going to go composite - start going the whole way and think cpmposite rather than stainless. With your tramp attachments, consider gluing on PVC pipe onto the tramp ramp and the hulls and then glassing over with 2 layers of 44gm db. Then cut into the pipe every 150mm with a notch. Slide through some alloy of glass rod and tie the tramp onto the rod through the notch. I even use this method for my genoa sheeting - as I don't move the genoa cars once set in the right place. Look at some composite cats and modern monos for composite tricks and how to do attachments. Bolting is heavy, expensive, produces point loads and causes leaks, whereas composite (when done well) is so much better. With the tramp ramp, I would run the PVC tube/glass along the edges where the tramp ran. I lash my tramps on, so don't need the boltrope. I love my cod end fishing net tramps - black nylon and 24 years old - 4 years liveaboard with kids. I will replace them soon but they last and are quite cheap from a fishery supply store.

    A tip for anyone contemplating similar amounts of f/g work.
    Get a small portable vacuum cleaner. Use flexible hose to pipe into a full face cover dive mask.
    If you want to help keep cool you can also pipe into your Tyvek suit. The positive air pressure will not only help to keep you cool, it will also help keep the f/g dust out of the inside of the suit.

    Super, glad you are getting the docks sorted out. Have fun with the sticky, itchy, gooey stuff. If you can find a used CPAP (sleep apeia) blower and some hose you could ventilate your Tyvek suit.

    One day at a time. You are working in "combat field conditions." Once yours, you can spend a week cleaning the project up and greatly increase your productivity. I too am O- and the mosquitos love me too! I made up a spray using essential oils that are totally safe, but drive the bugs away just north of you in Georgia. Per spray bottle: 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup witch hazel, 1 tsp glycerin, 1tsp alcohol (gin, rubbing, whatever), 30 drops citronella, 30 drops geranium, 10 drops lemon, 10 drops eucalyptus, 10 drops rosemary, and 10 drops lavender. Lasts for hours. Amazing stuff and you smell GREAT! Godspeed on your project sir!
