Actually, rhododendrons are known for having very shallow root systems, but that doesn’t exactly mean “small”.
Also, they do need to have their root ball “torn” a bit when you plant them, because they want to expand their root systems sideways, but they can’t do this on their own without a little extra help.
Also, ramapo rhododendrons stay small on their own. They just don’t get more than about 2 feet tall/wide.

Did it make a good bonsai? What would you suggest to someone who may want to make a bonsai out of a Ramapo?

a really nice tree with some wonderful natural movement, u said that this plant may prefer a deeper root system... the branch u point out at 9:13 would make a nice cascading branch. i also think it looks quite nice from that angle, good video as always.

Hi I am enjoying watching your videos however you say you have been losing some I think you may be pruning to late! As from my experience it is vital to remove blooms before the plant finishes flowering and pruning hard then. If you let the plant finish flowering it will use all its energy reserves producing flowers/seed pods.pruning then reduces vigour overtime killing the plant also don't heavy prune and repot in the same year. Hope this helps good luck look forward to sesing more videos

Great video! Just wondering, why don't you do a heavy cut back instead of just trimming the tops of the plant? Because as of now, the primary and secondary branches are rather lengthy. Of course, that could also be the style you're going for :)

I'm starting in the world of bonsai and not know anything. I see many bonsaistas to do the pruning of pre-binsais but do not understand what makes you pick this or that branch to leave or withdraw from the plant. You do the pruning through a scheme set up or make you suddenly?
