Try using 1/4" or 3/8" closed cell backer rod as a filler or slightly larger nominal size backer rod to fit in the gap. Much less messy than TP, inexpensive, more fire retardant, and predictable uniform outcome.
It’s a great question; if you are ever painting white or against white, you can absolutely use white caulking. Always always always. However, when you are either painting against a non-white colour please use clear; the moment you use white and it is not against a white , you will discover the reason why
Would you use this toilet paper trick outdoors? I'm used to using backer rod, but TP would be cheaper. Not related to this video, but, do you reuse rollers? Cheers.
Oh, help... I live in an old house and many of the walls are uneven like this. Your caulking tips worked! Thank you so much! But... now I need to paint. Do I paint the caulk the colour of the wall above or the colour of the crown moulding?
I’m going to give you a two-part answer; the first part I will answer now and then I will release the answer and I will go and search for a video that will help you execute the advice I’m about to give you: First of all, you want to use tape after the caulking dries. Make sure that it has dried; I advise you to paint the following day. On the following day you are going to use tape and carking again… Yes, I said again! And the reason for that is contained in numerous examples in the following video; and this video is the second part to my answer here now, let me go and search for it and I will edit this comment when I find a video and send it in this answer:: th-cam.com/video/KDgR28VFFyw/w-d-xo.html
@@spencercolgan Thank you SO much!!! I have been painting for weeks. I have a pretty steady hand so I do the detail work and my husband does the roller work. I REALLY enjoyed this video! I made a number of little mistakes that your video has shown me how to correct 😀👍 We have two more spaces left to do. I will gratefully use your tips. And I paid close attention to the part in your video about vertical spaces, but I’m still not entirely sure how to handle my vertical crown moulding spaces; sometimes the space is as large as a half inch, sometimes a quarter inch and sometimes flush, all on the SAME wall 😳 You mentioned ‘fooling’ the eye to make an imperfect wall look perfect. I’m THINKING I should paint the caulked spaces the colour of the wall so the straight crown moulding fools the eye into believing that the wall is straight too?
I have the same 5 in one I’ve had it clip d to my belt For two years now n it still works perfect I love it!!!!and u know spencer it s actually a six in one lol don’t forget murder weapon lmao jk!! Love ur videos !! I’m hooked I’ve been in the finish construction / wall finisher for 15 years and never have heard of the hairspray trick
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Harley Malcolm I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I have a question for anyone who can answer. I painted one coat of paint on my walls, I missed some spots, and painted the areas and I can see a change in the color on the walls. Why is this happening
Good lord I thought the gaps in my house were bad. Anyway this is the best solution. Changing the skirting/base board wouldn’t do anything the wall is out.
Hey honey, hand me some toilet paper, I’m out. Ok, hold on, let me tear out the baseboard and I’ll get you some! (Seriously, that is a good tip, thanks)
I would just remove that baseboard clean edge from old mess and nail more firmly to wall with less time and much better result but there is always this lazy ass hack you can try.
Great learning video Spencer, and I am glad that you keep these up for someone like me to learn.
VERY helpful video and I loved the extra tip about the black line on the caulk. Thank you!
These days toilet paper is a premium!

What is that ? Never heard of that sir.
Nice tip Spencer use a sealant finishing tool that we use in the UK works a treat.
If the base was getting painted white with a green wall, would you use white caulk or still clear?
It’s a great question; if you are ever painting white or against white, you can absolutely use white caulking. Always always always. However, when you are either painting against a non-white colour please use clear; the moment you use white and it is not against a white , you will discover the reason why
I was always taught to paint skirtings (baseboards) before hanging paper, but when painting the walls to do the skirtings last.
Would you use this toilet paper trick outdoors? I'm used to using backer rod, but TP would be cheaper. Not related to this video, but, do you reuse rollers? Cheers.
I reuse them. Yes

why did you not use your new tool to cut the top of the caulking.
What caulk do you use ? Thx
I have the same 5 in one I’ve had it clip d to my belt For

There used to be a mildly abrasive toilet paper in the uk in the 80s. All schools had it, it was non absorbent a bit like tracing paper
The blue stuff?
Bro we still had that in the 90’s 😂
Thanks for the great video
Not bad! Especially for when you’re limited to what you can do. Thanks!
What a great idea, we'd use expendable foam but that's dear - super cheap solution.
Well the TP is a great idea, I always learn alot from you. Thanks!
Wow. T. Y.
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..?

@Kendall Creed instablaster =)

@Harley Malcolm It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
Great Vid Spencer, and thanks for the valuable tips
I do something different. I use the 3M patch putty then caulk over before painting.
Does that work for quarter round, inside corner where the gap is about 1/4"?
Yes mm
I wish these videos would complete the job. I question why white caulk could not be used because it is paintable and you did use tape. Confused.
I have a question for anyone who can answer. I painted one coat of paint on my walls, I missed some spots, and painted the areas and I can see a change in the color on the walls. Why is this happening
You sound like Christopher Walken! Good vid 👍
Was thinking the same thing. Enjoyed the video.
Thank you for the tip! I definitely needed it!
For some reason I got constipated, when the caulking gun got stuck.
Good lord I thought the gaps in my house were bad. Anyway this is the best solution. Changing the skirting/base board wouldn’t do anything the wall is out.
I like his style
Great job Spencer
Are you doing a Christopher Walkin impression
Brilliant! thanks.
Wow great helpful tip!
Awesome video thank you! Btw you kind of sound like Christopher walken. But your more like Christopher caulken lol thanks again!
I used cotton & insulation. Never thought of using toilet paper.
Hey honey, hand me some toilet paper, I’m out. Ok, hold on, let me tear out the baseboard and I’ll get you some! (Seriously, that is a good tip, thanks)
Thanks for the tip.
so helpful!!!
Worked great, Thank you!!!!
wow this is the problem i'm having except it's the ceiling i'm gonna try it
Also try expanding foam 👍
in the UK everything is 'rough' here, including loo roll!!! hahaha
Thank you, very helpful!
Expanding foam ..
Great information
You can use white. All you do is prime it before painting.
How to make a complete mess in someone's home
Best quote, there’s a bunch of trolls on TH-cam
Mildly abrasive?! Yea…. We used to call it John Wayne toilet paper. Cause it don’t take s*^t off of nobody…..😂
Nice tip!!!
Foam backing rod is a much better idea.
Dude acts/ talks just like christopher walkin...
Become one with the caulking !!
I watch videos to learn the right way to do things. Toilet paper is what I would already have done. Hahaha. Just kidding, good video!
After 10 wipes on the toilet this would be idea and good for the environment. J/s
Much cheaper than the backer rod I was planning on hunting down and buying.. somewhere.
Imagine you went to fix your baseboards and you found a shit load of tissue paper ....
During this time I bet a lot of people wish they had tissue paper hidden behind their baseboards...
@@gobirajmusic I've heard of hiding cash in your mattress, but TP in the walls? What a crazy world we live in 🤣
oh man u gotta move those hands faster lodding that cawlking gun
Close my eyes and im hearing Christopher Walken
That sanding was driving me nuts trying to listen.
The time this guy took I could have done the whole room😱
Why not just get some round caulk filler foam? It really doesn’t cost much more than toilet tissue but it’s a whole lot more professional.
Thank god the toilet paper is not used!!!
But if you want to save even more, put it used!!!
I was about to say what a terrible looking result... until you pealed the tape 👌
Or you could do it the correct way and use drywall mud
Crack city. Plus drywall mud will fall through the cracks....if too big...That’s where the term comes from “falling through the cracks “
Amiga for girls.
I would just remove that baseboard clean edge from old mess and nail more firmly to wall with less time and much better result but there is always this lazy ass hack you can try.
Mr. Wizeguy ty
Im an electrician. lol.
Talk about polishing a turd!
Am I the only person that thinks the finished job looks like crap? I do like the TP idea....
This is just horrible lol
Sorry but that is far from perfection it looks ok now but it will shrink and end up looking bad
It didn’t sir. But I tell them before I begin; this is not going to look original
Do you know what your doing.....asking for a friend
🤣
Not a troll but that's a fucking mess.
You really enjoy talking for a 1 min video could show.
You’re right.
What a mess
