slight hiccup i think for monster 1. The scouting chance in the original was set, after fighting the golem the king would mention some monster would not join no matter how much you feed them.... though i did find some oddities while researching this. some will never but some will if you feed them but only a select few (?)
I'm a seasoned DQ fan at this point, so I'm humbled to say that I genuinely had no idea these remakes exist. I've always wanted to get into those original DQM games, but the retro jank/tedium turned me off to them. Maybe this is the way I'll finally be able to experience these games!
I remember seeing Japanese trailers for these games and being obsessed with them because they weren't available here and we needed them. The translation team are miracle workers
I feel like Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 is especially forgotten so much so that the team that tried a fan translation even forgot about it. Which is unfortunate cause for people in the west we really didn't know what we're missing out on, these are hidden gems. the monsters 3DS games had 3D monsters in an overworld with hundreds of them to collect, years before Pokemon did the same (this coming from a die hard pokemon fan) these games really need more praise and unfortunate it was Akira Toryama's passing that brought the series to my attention
The Gameboy "Monsters" remakes on 3DS is the reason I modded my 3DS years ago. They are both great, too bad there was no official American release. Then more people here would know about them.
They simply didn't get localized. You can't forget something you didn't get. Like it happens with a lot of amazing DS and 3DS games stuck in Japan. I bet in Japan they still remember and play these DQ games. Hope we get a localized remaster collection or something but I doubt it.
Oh man I remember waiting for these to get released outside japan when I was in middle school... every day after lunch I would look for more info about the games... wish it had actually happened.
GC got me into Dragon Quest and JRPGs in general. Now, it's my favourite genre of gaming. Final Fantasy always seemed imposing, though I was intruiged by the mechanics and storytelling and GC made Dragon Quest seem more manageable. In hindsight, I would actually say that late game Dragon Quest to Final Fantasy are reversed, with Dragon Quest being the harder ones in my opinion, but that's likely due to the more limited resources for newer players to learn boss strategies etc with DQ being less popular in the West comparitively. Anyway, it's great to see a new video from one of my favourite video game essayists out there!
Tension and clash reminds me a lot of SMT. Getting wrecked by an enemy of boss the first time, but learning that they are weak to ice. So for your second attempt you include more ice skills in your team and do way better with the gained knowledge.
There were also the remakes on the PS1 for DQM 1 and 2 as well, and I thought that was impressive as well. It's like the leap in quality between DQ3 on NES compared to DQ3 on SNES. I don't think there was ever a finished fan-translation for the PS1 remakes, unfortunately, but they definitely felt like the definitive versions when I played them, at least for the 2D experience of DQM 1 and 2.
I've been trying to find a translation project for the ps version of 1. I just like the sprites a lot more than the 3d models. But I might give Terry's Wonderland a go. Just beat 3 professional, loved every minute of it.
They aren't really forgotten. Just doesn't exist in the west. I have the limited edition DQM2 3DS with the physical game from japan when i heard about the remake. Im fluent in japanese so i import alot of DQ games even DQ10.
"It's like a game of chicken: both players clashing over and over until one of them swerves out of the way into a different strategy." In a game of chicken, swerving is an instant loss of the game, though, not part of a strategy.
great remakes but I don't know why they felt the need to replace the interesting boss music with the joker one we heard (and would continue to hear for a while longer) but hey at leat it isn't the random encounter theme, we didn't have a monsters game with new standard battle music until 2023.... I don't think I want to hear that original dqm battle theme ever again at this point lol
So many great DQ games are stuck over in Japan… 😢 one that many don’t know about, and never got a fan translation, is the mystery dungeon ps2 game starring yangus!
I am still a little confused so these 3ds versions are remakes of the ds version of joker 1 and 2. but 1 is a remake of the gbc version. But the protagonist doesnt look like the one it joker with the spiky hair?
I managed to get the DQM1 remake going on an emulator with a patch and it didn't make much of an impression on me. It seemed like just combat and getting monsters without any semblance of a story, so I dropped it quickly
God if only they localize the 2nd remake on switch with content from the mobile SP release. The Dark Prince felt such a downgrade compare to the 3DS games...
I haven't seen the anime, but I've played a bit of Infinity Strash game (I received a free copy). I thought it was fine? The roguelike mode that was in it could have been the main game imo.
This is well timed. These last few days I've been trying to try Terry's Wonderland, but be it the "-ware" side or "game" side perhaps because of Nintendo's actions lately...I can't seem to find a way to play it in English or the process is too complicated for me. Mysterious Key though is an available option that's working and ready to start. I'm curious if I should just skip Terry's Wonderland and settle for that or get some insight on why it's a struggle to even setup for me otherwise. I don't necessarily want to "spoil" myself on a "better" game, I'd like to get as much value out of the franchise as possible as I've only played 4/7 Entries! As for this video itself you've convinced me that Clashes returning might be the thing that could save Dark Prince's PVP. 💀 (Praying for the alleged content update.)
TW3D is so monotone, The random generated areas really didn't work for 3DS. I would skip for Mysterious Keys which is objectively better and better than TDP as well.

It's nice to still see you posting DQ stuff after so many years.
I remember seeing Japanese trailers for these games and being obsessed with them because they weren't available here and we needed them. The translation team are miracle workers
I was glad when Nintendo remade DQ 7 & 8 for the 3DS.
I also would have played DQM 3 & 4 if they came to the 3DS.
Tension and Clashing would have been such a cool mechanic to keep in The Dark Prince.
I agree 100%
i get that but i also like not being able to scout each new monster as soon as i see it
I feel like Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 is especially forgotten so much so that the team that tried a fan translation even forgot about it. Hope other Pokémon fan like you try also :)
Fan translation not finished ? 😭
DQM2 3DS is now my favorite game in the Monsters series. They really pulled no punches making these look, sound and play phenomenally!
The Gameboy "Monsters" remakes on 3DS is the reason I modded my 3DS years ago. They are both great, too bad there was no official American release. Then more people here would know about them.
My heart breaks for these games. Some of my favorite memories are playing Joker 3, DQM3DS 1, and DQM3DS2 online before the servers shut down.
They simply didn't get localized.

It's a shame!
I played the remake of DQM2 over the last month and it genuinely might be my favorite RPG ever made
Been craving for recent quality content on the monsters series, thank you so much!
It hurts so much that it was never localized.
Never did play these. Going to have to give them a shot! Sounds like a good time overall. Thanks as always for the awesome work sir!
Thank you for always being here!
Sweet, new GC video!
Hope you enjoyed it!

As always, an amazing video! I am missing the jokes at the beginning from the traditional DQ retrospective!
I've been trying to find a translation project for the ps version of 1. I just like the sprites a lot more than the 3d models. But I might give Terry's Wonderland a go. Just beat 3 professional, loved every minute of it.
Cant get enough of these vids, which games were your favourite?
Still wished these games came out global since DQM2 Cobi version was my first game.
Great vid! I really want to try them remakes now 😄
Go for it!
So sad I missed out on these, especially since my 3DS died on me not long ago. I loved playing the first DQ Monsters on the Gameboy as a kid.
Buy a cheap 3DS and mod it. Or buy one already modded. They are out there.
They aren't really forgotten. Just doesn't exist in the west. I have the limited edition DQM2 3DS with the physical game from japan when i heard about the remake. Im fluent in japanese so i import alot of DQ games even DQ10.

DQM2 remake is literally the best game in the series, especially comparing to TDP. For those who liked TDP I really recommend to play DQM 2 remake.

Nice vid :)
How is this the second time this game has been remade and not recive a wide western release... Square fumbles the bag yet again
Just got my hand on them translated.
I managed to get the DQM1 remake going on an emulator with a patch and it didn't make much of an impression on me. It seemed like just combat and getting monsters without any semblance of a story, so I dropped it quickly
Yes? Did you not watch this video or the previous one about these games?
God if only they localize the 2nd remake on switch with content from the mobile SP release.
The Dark Prince felt such a downgrade compare to the 3DS games...
I had fun with The Dark Prince but the ds and 3ds ones are all better.
What’s your thoughts on dragon quest dai
I haven't seen the anime, but I've played a bit of Infinity Strash game (I received a free copy). I thought it was fine? The roguelike mode that was in it could have been the main game imo.
i never played any dq besides dragon warrior a few years ago, but it's always a good time watching these
Dang… now i gotta figure out how to play them in English 😂
There should be fan translations out there!
There are most definitely fan translations out there!
@@zedorian6547that doesn’t answer how you get it to work though.
WIsh Dark Prince had the giant monsters.
Hope you're doing okay
mostners....
