UK: tick US: check
UK: autumn US: fall (autumn is used but mostly use Fall)
UK: post (verb) US: mail (but still called a post office as in US postal service)
UK: hire a car US: rent a car. (No one understands what it is meant by hiring a car, a taxi)
UK: timetable US: schedule (different pronunciation!)
UK: primary, secondary, and tertiary education US: elementary, secondary and higher education
I learnt English in HK before studying in the States. Americans are very generous with their ears; need not worry that your English doesn't exactly match the locals'.
Faye so cute.
In america, we use till also, but the till means the cash drawer. E.g. After the store closes, manager tells the cashier to count the till for the day.
Very interesting indeed. I almost forgotten the UK lingo after being in the US for 30yrs. 👍
Washroom"
Globalization makes the different words interchangeable. Am and Br words have been often co-existing for ages.
Till = cashier 😮 ~ Encore please & thank u so much to both of you 👍😸
This video is extremley helpful. Now I finally understand my friend meant "college" when she kept referring to "uni".
Sweet couple
very useful and thanks for your sharing
The term bathroom is used if you are at home or at someone’s house. The sign for “toilet” is restroom in a store, restaurant, gas station, etc. we say ginger snap instead ginger biscuit.
好❤多謝🙏🏻 thank you very much❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Faye and Stevo. I‘m looking forward to the 3rd❤
Moving socks good advice best of you both
I like the smiling of you couple, so healing
Thanks Faye n Stevo!
Hoover for vacuum cleaner is like Xerox machine for coping machine in the U.S. Also we say we are going to a doctor's office instead of going to a clinic
Yes im from HK when we first came to US over 30 years ago, we have problems understanding the American English and we are doubting what we’ve learned in school….. 😅
many differences in pronunciations too
there was a old documentery called 2 country separated by 1 language, it went deep into the language different between usa and queens english. it is very funny. we have fun with our uk friends too.
Great info
Very useful! Thank you so much! 👍👍
Very useful 、
Very interesting
Thanks for sharing. You guys are wonderful to watch. ❤️👍
goooooooood to thanks.. all the English...
Also call taxi as Hack in USA.
In US we say photos also.
Loo is very common, not care is formal or informal, not limited to use with your closed friend or not, everyone say that
I wouldn’t say loo to my boss though LOL 😂
In fact, "restroom" is more commonly used here in the US than "bathroom".
Bank Teller, not tiller. Till means cash register in US
British:canoe US: Kayak
British: torch US: flashlight
subway in British have a another meaning , an underground passage that allows people on foot to cross a busy road
Thank you Stevo and Faye, interesting topic

@@MovingSocks2.0 Oh! I overlooked the video. Thank you, it is really helpful.
Thanks.
Also, down town Vs center 😆
movies are also called motion pictures
Restroom is commonly used in a public place instead of bathroom.
我覺得都要睇埋喺英國咩地區,可能Steveo喺Greater London生活長大,多啲字可以interchange(或者好似阿Faye講咁樣MK咗嘅British🤣🤣🤣).
Faye!
Thanks for sharing 😘
Tea , coffee or me. As described by some profession.
you can do a video about USA vs UK words on clothing and pants, I know there are a lot differences in words, I get really confused
Hi, I’m a BBC but have spent lots of time working with adults and children from America.
Faye and Stevo covered many of the differences already but I have added some others.
UK: trousers US: pants
UK underwear terminology: pants (or boxers or slips) are generally male underwear, knickers are female underwear. Some people now call knickers “Panties”, which is more American.
UK: vest US: undershirt
In the UK we have t-shirts (male and female) and collared starch shirts (like you wear to an office, female version is a “blouse”).
UK: trainers US: sneakers
UK: rucksack US: backpack.
UK: bum bag US: fanny pack… in the UK a fanny is the slang/child term for a female’s nether region.
UK: torch US: flashlight
UK: nappy US: diaper
UK: baby’s dummy US: pacifier
UK: rubber US: eraser
UK: condom US: rubber
UK: jam US: jelly
UK: jelly US: Jello
UK: corn flour US: corn starch
UK: bicarbonate of soda US: baking soda
UK: plain flour US: all purpose flour.
UK: self raising flour is basically plain flour with baking POWDER (not soda!) already added.
Because the UK has more American influences than vice versa, the majority of British people (especially in and around London) tend to understand what the American word is.
I hope this helps!
Thanks for your sharing
Very good video 👍
Is Faye an Oxford alumni?
VIDEO thanks
Crib
While you guys talked about “surgery”, I remember they call surgeons by Mr, not by Dr…. They say it was an English tradition that quite confused me before they told me.
So funny ,very interesting. Thx ☺️
Cop is short for copper - to cop means to seize or catch
The TV series Peaky Blinders use the term copper a lot
Cab is short for taxicab
They called “washroom”/“restroom” in US, but not bathroom.
Useful, useful
What about Arcade?
“Restroom” 呢?
I saw you added an extra “p” to apartment. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought it was spelt “apartment”. For toilet, I’ve also used “can” or “washroom” over bathroom
It's crazy how different UK and US railway terminology is, could fill an entire episode with just train terms. 😂
Just a few examples to illustrate:
UK: railway US: railroad
UK: brake van US: caboose
UK: bogies US: trucks
UK: trucks/wagons US: freight cars

Car terms too:
US: hood UK: bonnet
US: trunk UK: boot
US: windshield UK: windscreen
US: station wagon UK: estate car
US: sedan UK: saloon
US: gasoline / gas UK: petrol
US: freeway UK: motorway
US: traffic circle UK: roundabout
US: overpass UK: flyover

The famous Chattanooga choo choo. A song sang during the 40s 50s big band sound.
Surgery = knife cutters. , , most doctors = Physicians
USA Apartment, UK Flat, Australia Unit.
THANK YOU
It's very interesting and helpful for us to know more local language that we become confident to communicate with locals in our social life.
I was asking for utensils in a restaurant in Manchester but the waitress did not know what I meant…..later I found out that I should have asked for cutlery instead.
American
I hadn't heard of 'flashlight' until I came to the US. In HK, I used torch. Is it also true in the UK? My US friend laughed at me when I said 'torch' as it means something like Olympic torch.
I had the same experience 40 years ago when I used "torch" to mean " flashlight". I deeply remember my friends here laughing that we were not in a cave!!
Board Game, Bridge Game, even TV Game?
Well, how to say if its really a surgery or an operation in hospital? Thanks in advance 🙏
I am going in for surgery or I am going in for an operation
Hi
