TY for doing this. I was introduced to B&0 gear in 1979 London UK....a kid in candy store. The company introduce refreshing styling/design that was unmatched......it was exiting and welcomed POV from my Radio Shack speakers that were hooked up to my Sanyo boombox, ..I was 15. Hi, very interesting video. I am setting up a system with a pair of beolab 9, an Urei 1620LE dj mixer as a preamp and a 1200 with a shure cardtrige. So far very happy with the sound
Thanks for another great video! Thanks for mentioning my company Sounds Heavenly, glad you liked my cables! I'm always happy to help with connecting any B&O products. Wishing you both a very Happy New Year!
Your cables worked GREAT! While I haven't used PowerLink cables in several years, your adapters and cables felt more substantial than the factory cables --again, going off memory. Regardless, they worked GREAT and you were right about the auto on/off functionality via the PowerLink cables vs. standard RCA cables. Thanks for ALL your help Steve!
Hello. I’m in England. I’m connecting a Sonos Port into the line in of a pair of Beolab 8000s. I’ll go on your website to see if you have anything which will solve the intermittent failure of one speaker to go into standby mode
I see B&O, Prestige Creators and Sounds Heavenly cables and I couldn't have pressed ''Like'' any quicker. The latter two are also fantastic people and companies that I am privileged to call friends now. All highly recommended, thank you once again for a fantastic video! And just know that you and Kristi always have an open invitation to come join the BeoTalk Podcast anytime 😁
Great experiment. I am contemplating on doing the same thing for my father’s Technics SL 1600 MKII which my brother and I saved up our money to purchase it for his birthday. It needs some TLC to get it in proper working condition. The second project is to get his circa late 50’s, early 60’s Scott integrated tube amp and a Garrad Model RC 88/4 working again. If there piece of gear that you love, then it’s well worth the time and effort in restoring it to working condition. Since you got the ok from the wife, then this makes your “project “all the better👍🏾 I just want to thank you Kristi for being such a supporting factor in Andrew’s life. This hobby can cause some of us to spend money on thing we know we shouldn’t. Thank you both for such a fantastic year of videos and have a safe, healthy and prosperous New Years.
Got my hands on a pair of beolab penta, beolab 4000, beocenter 9000 and beocord 5500 for 300$ 👍 Have replaced the foam inside the Beolab 4000 so they don't die because of the old foam, which you should do too Andrew if you haven't done it already!
Andrew, I enjoyed this completely! Let me say, I just recently got into B&O thanks to an elderly neighbor gifting me a BeoSystem 6500 receiver, cassette deck and the fabulous control center! Missing, was the CD player and the VERY hard to find turn table.
To shorten the story, I bought TWO CD players from eBay, and got one going perfectly. Contacted BEO-Parts in Denmark, got all the belts for the Cassette deck and tackled that MOST difficult operation, and am now really enjoying the sound! These were all dated 1990 on the rear panel. I got my adaptors for the Euro DIN for the speakers, and a small DAC to stream into the receiver section. My neighbor called me the other day, said she found something. I went over, and low and behold, she found the CD player !! So, now, I have the original to the set, and a working backup! With that, the final quest is to find the matching turntable for the 6500 series (in BLACK) and it is NOT to be found anywhere ! Perhaps you could let me know if you have seen one in your 'travels' ? Thanks for much !
There is a segment of audio enthusiasts who upgrade speakers, an audio restomod if you will. I picked up an old pair of 1960's Sansui speakers. I like the look of the speakers with the carved wooden grill, but man do they sound terrible. I'm going to be doing some upgrades, and leaning toward using the Klipsch cerametallic components as the copper and wood contrast would be visually appealing.
I bought a pair of used BeoLab 8000s this summer, plugged them into Pro-Ject Preamp DS2 which also has a DAC and sub out. The DAC gets sound from the TV via optical. After trying the setup also added a Dali c8d sub and now the whole setup sounds amazing. The soundstage of 8000s and their overall performance amazed me, especially after all this audiophile internet talks about B&O being abt the looks only. Total cost ended up being comparable to some Sonos setup, but it sounds better and, well, the looks, these speakers make the room look better.
@Andrew Robinson I bought 4 used beolab 8000 several years ago and coupled them on my Sony STR-6400ES receiver with a tannoy RC5 Sub , still an amazing sounding surround set . But i want to expand to a set not only DTS or 5.1 but 7.1 or 9.2 Any idea which extra speakers and \ or receiver to use
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Hi Andrew , first love your reviews !!! I bought 4 used beolab 8000 several years ago and coupled them on my Sony STR-6400ES receiver with a tannoy RC5 Sub , still an amazing sounding surround set . But i want to expand to a set not only DTS or 5.1 but 7.1 or 9.2 Any idea which extra speakers and \ or receiver to use ??
This is right up my alley. I was always mesmerized by the older B&O speakers, and stuff like Beocenter 2 or Beosound 5, etc, and wished there was someone explaining how to slightly modify the hardware to be nicely usable nowadays. I hope to see more of Bang&Olufsen from you, this was extremely interesting!
This is not the same thing, but my 2018 Audi A4 has a B&O 19 speaker sound system in it, and it’s the cats meow 😻 loved the new video as always! Keep it up 👍
I have some 40 year old S45-2 passive speakers (including the stands) which I have always loved. I just had a friend replace the capacitors with new Beo Parts ones.
While I am thinking to add wood strips onto my B&O 6000 pair, this video encouraged me to do this idea. While listening, something went really funny. My mother tongue isn’t English and I am doing captions on, so I read while I am listening. But captions don’t interpret always right. And when Andrew says “Bang & Olufsen”, subtitle said couple of “Bang and all sins”. So I was laughing while trying to listen. Thanks Andrew, for the nice review.
@@KristiWright Most of us in the hobby long enough will likely have many individual “faves” in individual categories, but often only one brand encompassing the entire range of audio gear with which little fault can be found. For me back in the later ‘70s through mid ‘80s, that was Yamaha; just too many delightful and even funky pieces (TC800GL) that just worked together synergistically.
Great project Andrew, nicely done as usual. I can vouch for Steve at Sounds Heavenly and Demetri at Prestige Creators, both top fellas. I'd love you to get some Beolab 17, one of my personal favourites, it would be good to get your take on them, I think you'd enjoy them a lot. All the best for 2022 - John.
I would love to see this too, I am with John on both fronts here. Steve's cables are great and Beolab 17's are fantastic, I am very sad they are discontinued. They deserved a longer life but if you ever need any please let us know, Beolab 17's have universal power supplies so they work in the US too!
@@Mikipedia I got a beolink ml/nl converter and it works to distribute the sound from the Beo9k using the B&O app, but any idea how I can use either the Beo4 or BeoOne remote to control the BeoSound 9000 now that it in the BeoLink? The beo4 remote that came with beo9k doesnt work anymore.
This was so great. I loved the dichotomy between Kristi’s practical view and Andrew’s “tinker/nostalgic” view. As someone that purchased a pair of mid 80’s Beovox S45s this summer for $60 because they looked so cool and then spent $140 on stands and $40 on a re-foaming kit, I totally get it. Not the least bit practical. And then replaced a new pair of Emotiva B1+ with them. But they have blown me away with how amazing they sound and look. Every time I see them or hear them I smile and the journey to get there was part of the fun. I know these vintage videos are tough because they aren’t as relatable as reviewing available (or theoretically available products) but from a purely entertainment standpoint, please continue to mix these in (just like the Marantz). I know they take a lot of work but they are great fun.
@@beitie That’s awesome. I just don’t even understand how they can sound so good. Very detailed in terms of instruments and sounds stage and so clear. Only slightly lacking in the bottom end but not in a way that is desperate for a sub.
The Beolab 4000 is Bang & Olufsen's most underappreciated active speaker. The sound is really crisp and rich, and the new wood aesthetic makes it more more appealing. One of the weak points on the Beolab 4000 (MK1) have is the isolation materiale Bang & Olufsen had used. The Beolab 4000's isolation material burns on the amplifier board's surface as the amplifier board warms up, causing damage to the board. If you have a Beolab 4000 I will highly recommend to clean out the old isolation material before your Beolab 4000 gets damage.
For sure a revival of the beolab 5s would be amazing to me. I know that the 90s and the 50s kind of cover what they could do and modern DSP technology covers what the lens could do. But I'd love to see a double acoustic lens again.
The whole time I was listening I was thinking the exact words that Kristie said. Sounds like a pain in the ass. The kind of runaround I used to do back when I was using groups of lesser speakers, trying to bring them up to a better sonic level. I do appreciate the work you put in and bringing us the outcome of the experiment. As usual, great vid, the effort you put in shows, thank you.
Funny story. My one piece of B&O equipment is a Beogram 2000 turntable from the mid 90's. It's in fantastic physical condition but has some distortion issues and needs some TLC. I have no idea what's wrong with it (cartridge, cables, caps?). I thought about putting it into the shop but instead I started watching turntable reviews (including yours of course!). Yesterday I literally ordered myself a brand new Fluance RT85 to replace the B&O. The RT85 should be here in a few weeks. But if you have any interest in adding a vintage B&O turntable to your collection, please let me know. I'm in North Austin over near Great Hills:) Take care, and Happy New Year!
Necessity is the mother of intervention... Or something like that. LOL B&O was always about the phantasy of what the future would hold. Scarry, but still Kraftwerk cool. Remember their desktop portable phone/rechargeable base? That brings up that ole Conan Brian's shtick.." In the year 3000 "... Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Happy New Year kids... :)
Maybe this gives some hope for my ancient Paradigm 5SE speakers that I haven’t used in 20 years. Watching now. Happy New Year! 2022. The year of the new house!!
Well, I so feel I have my subscriptions right! As well as your brilliant channel, Andrew & Kristi, I am a subscriber to Steve's Sounds Heavenly...another great channel run by a thoroughly decent guy👍 Wishing you both a happy and healthy 2022, with more excellent Andrew and Kristi content!👍❤️👍
Steve at Sounds heavenly us a smashing guy as is Demitri at Prestige Creations there’s some really good honest people in the Bang and Olufsen community 👍👍👍 And as ever Andrew and Kristi give a fair and balanced in-depth review
I used to sell Audio in the late 70's into the early 80's.. We had a great buying option to be able to buy a pair of most brands speakers for 50% of their suggested retail. I bought a pair of the M75 monitor speakers which came with the stands. Those speakers were amazing back then, open and airy , sweet top end and excellent mid bass kick and some decent lower end frequency response if driven by good power. At that time I had a Hafler DH 500 powering them. At the Time the store I worked for carried B&W, Kef. ADS and B&O speakers .. Those stands played a great role in raising the speakers and allowing you to tilt them back which increased their sound stage. I got a lot of compliments from friends. Man, I wish that I had held on to them thinking back on those speakers. Kudos Andrew for sharing.. Definitely under rated loudspeakers in their day.
I work at a Bang & Olufsen store in Denmark. I love learning about the old school B&O loudspeakers! I myself have a pair of Beolab 9 and i love them so much! Awesome video and would love more videos about old school B&O products!
Once again, an honest no holds barred from both of you. B & O was and is cool to look at and of course sound great. Always has been a step up from my beloved Bose stuff.
internal cabinet foam rot is a huge issue too. The black foam used inside the early BL4000/BL6000 cabinets degrades and shorts out the amps etc. They changed to a white foam half way through the production run.. No issues with the white foam. If you can get the mk2 of the BL4000 (ice power variant by all means get it!!)
You may have inspired me to build some stands for my B&O RL60.2s I’ve had in the closet for too many years, my first “real” speakers I ever bought back in ‘89 or so.
I love this kind of stuff. I’m not huge into tinkering but I’ll happily pay a company to tinker for me and I’m happy to see that side of things is still thriving 😍
Great Experiment. I got a Beosystem 2500 for my wife and we love it. Btw refoaming Drivers is really easy. I did it with my JBL Control 1 Media - the wired version - and it was really easy and works great. Just try it. 🙂
I think this is very good idea. Unfortunately Beolab 28 are out of my price range but I will definitely try to find some good Beolab 4000 + grills and NODE. Thanks 👍😁
I have the Prestige Creation oak Wood frets on my 8000 mk2 They are very well made indeed , I also use cables from Sounds Heavenly too , great products 👍 . Andrew I use the Bang and Olufsen Core on a different system to my 8000s The system is one pair of Beolab 3 , Beosound Overture, Beosound 2 in between the Beolab 3s and a Beolab 11 sub woofer . The Beosound 2 plays independently but in tandem. The Beolab 3 s are connected to the Beolab 11 subwoofer which is connected to the core which is connected to the Beosound Overure . Andrew it works perfectly ok I can’t use the EQ Wheel on the core however do have EQ settings on the app via the core and of course EQ options on the Beosound Overure music system. The bass is excellent , the Beosound 2 emits a 360 degree treble , the Beolab 3 (I think this speaker may of been the one you were thinking of ?) emits 180 treble it’s a lovely little system all three speakers sit on tall poles as does the Overture. Bang and Olufsen are a unique brand they sound as good as they look it’s terrific Hi Fi And my experience with Sounds Heavenly cables is 10 out of 10 And that also goes for the guys at Prestige Creations another 10 out of 10 . I find the EQ options on the core enough tbh
I think it’s a cool idea. Older B&O gear is kinda like older Porsches, good design, engineering and also different from the crowd. Definite cool factor. And update an older speaker like that gives you a nostalgic piece that’s unique. I’ve been wanting to paint my woofers in some way because they are a little monotone to me. Not B&O but speakers I’ve had almost 20 years. I’ve considered a bunch of ways to just change the look a little.
I had bought a Beosystem 2500 for my wifes room because she has CDs and Tapes allready and the blue color at the speakers fit perfect in the room. And because of the reason that our livingroom is not so big I want to replace my Canton Ergo 102 for a pair of Beolab 8000, but I had to listen to them first. :-) Or I take the Sony HT 9 with Sub you tested to make it even smaller. The only Problem is I like the sound of my 102s because it makes even standard tv programs sound fine, precise and natural, but they really big, black and heavy.
I've been reviving the B&O 80's turntables for the past few years and thank the stars for guys that work on the mmc cartridges (shout out to Ray & Steve @ Vinyl Audio Science in New Jersey!)!
The Bluesound Node is a very capable source, my company designs both active and passive speakers on it and it's as good as anything we've used - via Tidal Master quality actually better than most!
Design wise , Bang&olufsen is one of the best timeless design products you will find…in these new era of blue tooth, wi-if ,etc… still Bang&olufsen looks and feels very premium until these day even if the speaker is 20 years old…don’t get me wrong some of the new stuff it’s very decent with Sony,Sonos,Marshall, fender…but a good design its a good design… i own a mini Cooper the first generation, yes still works fine no mayor issues… but still till today a have complements with the car,,, a bout the sound…there is way better speakers?? , yes they are…but what i really like about the sound signature of Bang&olufsen is the …non ear fatigue… i can listen for hours and hours a reasonable volume and feel very happy…
B&O support ways of keeping their old speakers up to date. Vintage B&O CX50 and CX100 speaker are passive, but can be given a make over with the Beocreate 4 Channel Amplifier from HiFiBerry paired with a Raspberry Pi 3 A+. Streaming, Bluetooth and Wireless connections. The board is expensive and you also need a power supply, mounting frame, a RPi and the SD card so perhaps makes more sense if you already own the speakers tucked away in a back room or garage. I don't think the board is a stereo solution. The four channels connect directly to the two woofers and single tweeter (CX100 is a three way speaker). The CX50 uses one woofer and one tweeter output. The repair to the foam of the two bass units is straightforward and a number of instructional videos on TH-cam to help. I have a pair of CX100 that I re-foamed. They are hooked up to a Beocenter 9000. I have been listening to the FM radio and then got out some old cassettes and CDs. The quality is surprising and the interface is futuristic by today's standard yet the unit dates from 1986. Amazing just how good the Dolby HX Pro and Dolby C are and even pre-recorded tapes are much better than I remembered. Just like you found on the Level there is something about the controls on the unit making you want to use the interface on the unit and not the remote control. On connectivity a Uher 4400 Report Monitor simply plugged that into the back of the Beocenter. Connecting phone, portable devices with 3.5 mm plugs and the computer just for getting a cheap lead or soldering one up. The Beocenter 9000 powers two sets of speakers and has pre-amp output for BeoLab 6000 and Beolab 8000. Only phono (turntable) and two external inputs (Tape 2 and AUX) but that allows a DAC / streamer, DVD, TV and computer to be connected. Like Bose, B&O have a reputation for over expensive products for the sound quality. Style and convenience does cost but on the second hand market there are numerous bargains to be had that would cost much more to achieve the same sound quality elsewhere. Damaged foam CX50 and CX100 means for very little costs of a kit to put new foams on you get great speakers for very little.
I haven’t had many B&O products, outside of automotive systems, but as for reviving. I dig the late 80’s / early 90’s appearance of the RL140s on stands. I’ve never heard them, but want to check them out and restore a pair. And not a “revive” but I’ve always wanted to mount 2 A9s on a huge wall as a stereo setup. Probably a terrible idea.
It's actually a cool idea but would depend on which MK version of the A9's and which source you would like to use. Personally I would hard wire( using y splitter rca cables )MK2 A9's to the Bluesound node. Set the volume of each a9 to fixed and use the bluesound node volume control and stream using tidal. You may throw in a beolab 19 sub if you fancy more bass..Give it a short if you can
I’ve always enjoyed the B&O linear tracking turn tables! I would love to see them reissue one of the higher end version of one of those! Andrew and Kristi thanks for all the great reviews! I hope you had the happiest of holidays and that the New Year brings you health and happiness as well as some wonderful adventures in the realm of all things Hi Fi!
Have to mentioned I bought a pair of 4000 for my dad this Xmas. During my investigations, mk1 changed from black to white foam during 14xx serial number. Black = bad and may have already degraded, whereas white has a much longer (not yet discovered) lifespan. Oh - and the clarity is magical, picking up things in favorite sounds previously missed with lesser speakers. Also a slightly warm sound. Will need to find an excuse to buy a pair myself…
Currently reclothing a pair of Rl60.2 with blue fabric then mounted vertical on top of each other to a floor to ceiling pole in the corner of the room.
A pair of Beolit 17 or 20 will serve the same purpose with all of the wireless control you will need, including the whole house system capabilities. I have a pair of the Beolit 17, only complaint is the battery life of around 1.5 hours at full tilt, just leave them plugged in at home and they're highly flexible and sound will surprise you. One is good, two is a whole other story, the DSP on wireless stereo pairing for B&O is excellent.
I refoamed a pair of 90s baby advent and it was a fun project if you're into tinkering and glue scraping. Lots of careful glue scraping lol .. But it worked! Think it was $20 worth of kit from parts Express.
Is want the Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 5 back with newer connectivity features and integration with B&Os newer products! I love the design of the BeoLab 5s.
Is DIY customisation a HiFi trend at the moment? I love seeing reviewers getting inventive like this. I also love how Kristi pulls no punches about the tinkering life: "This was kind of a pain in the butt". Fantastic stuff, as always!
Cant help it, but i love your vintage videos a bit extra 🤓 the passion and work you put into this, the same goes to the restauration of the Pioneer ❤️ I would love to see the beosound 9000 in your livingroom! Just such a nice design, even though it is outdated with the CDs i still love the look of this epic design piece. Btw living in Denmark you can buy the beolab4k with stands for around 500$ in super condition 🙈😇
Great video, been waiting for this so long it feels like! I have two pairs of pentas i’ve revived and love and I think they are a great bargain. Others i would love to have a go at are their ”panel”-models like 4500! Also have some Beovox C75s and CX50s that sound great!
Knowing you like vintage, have you ever heard of Philip's MFB systems? I had a 22ah799 completely restored by a specialist and recently bought a pair of Philip's 587 MFB's, which were never sold and storage for 40 years. I unpacked them from their original packaging just a few weeks ago. Sounds amazing.. 👌
For a long time the only thing I was able to afford from B&O were the A8 earphones that you bought duty free on planes. Loved the punchy acoustics and open sound stage but actual speakers were out of reach. When I was finally able to afford B&O products, I was wiser and went with other brands. (RN: Naim Atom + Focal 800 series system)
Any chance you can compare beolab 8000s to the 28s? Did the lamellas alter the sound of the 4000s? Great to see you doing this! And also, well done sharing Steve at Sounds Heavenly, he is a vital resource for fans of vintage B&O!
I’m going to be examining a pair of 8000s in the next week or so for my 2ch setup. My old Def Tech BP20s just don’t fit the modern aesthetic of our new house, so I’ve been on the hunt and found a pair right in my neighborhood. Will be bittersweet having to repurpose the Jolida tube amp, but I think I’m going to add an extra pair of Triad in-walls behind the theater screen downstairs and have a completely separate 2ch setup apart from the Anthem/Triad surround setup.
You have had a great run with the DefTechs! Score on the local find! Maybe it's time for the tube amp to find a new owner. I bet you have a neighbor with some nicer Klipsch towers who has never heard them connected to a tube amp. If the 8000's end up not working out for you, check out the Martin Logan EFX. The on-wall electrostatic design works well in more modern rooms, and you don't have to sacrifice floor space like most tower speakers. Plus, think of all the "wall of sound" puns you can say in conversations.
You'll love the 8000s I am sure but you'll love them even more with a Beolab 2 subwoofer. The sub connects directly to the 8000s to manage the bass crossover and makes the 8000s sound even better, especially if you use them in a 2 channel home theatre setup.
I love the look of the 4000's, and I hope to hear them some day. I actually just picked up a Beosystem 2500 that needs some work. I'm looking forward to getting it back into shape and enjoying it's sound and looks.
Receiving the bluesound node this week, also picking up the beolab 8000 with some new wooden covers can’t wait 😊 dichting my Bose for it, I hope I get a great experience from it 😁
I do not know the model number, but I remember that CD changer they had years ago that held 5 CDs in line. One could mount it in just about any way you wished. Flat, on wall horizontally or vertical. I know, some of us old school people who still listen to CDs.
Nice review. In my opinion it’s better to invest into a Beosound or Beocenter to manage a pair of beolabs. You will then have another exceptional b&o product.
Not B&O (I always thought they were more style over substance) but still a blast from the past, I'm driving a pair of Meridian M30 MK2 active speakers (circa 1998) with the original stands using a Bluesound Node 2i. I've had these from new as part of a 207 and then 208 CD player/preamp setup. In the mid 2000s I used a Sonos Connect for streaming Apple Music before I replaced it with the much more capable Node 2i. I had the speakers refreshed with new capacitors recently and I think they sound even better than before. Other than the possibility of adding a sub woofer, I am completely satisfied with it in my living room. It is part of an overall system controlled by Roon.
This video was super interesting I love the idea of being able to increase the longevity of audio products as thats what put me off going for an all in one in a speaker. Would love to hear more of your thoughts on the bluesound node as its definitely on my list if I ever switch to separates.
Have a pair from 95 along with Beo Sound Overture, recently added Beogram 2000 turntable , just played brand new Ziggy Stardust LP….crisp clear heaven!
My favourite TH-cam channel handsdown! On a very light note, Andrew you’re starting to act like a ‘relapsing audiophile’ 🤣. Happy new year to you and Kristi.
Great video, love the 4000s and been wanting to do this or something similar. B&O just makes things that look and sound incredible. The downside is the frequent missions you have to go through to get them to work with other things because b&o refuses to conform to any trends or standards the rest of the world is on. With that being said I still love my b&o stuff!
Awesome video. A vintage Bang Olufsen Beovox S75 speakers were my first audiophile grade speakers. It was a 4 way sealed box design. I wish B&O comes up with a sealed box midsize speaker along under $2k. I'm a B&O fan. very much so. ... but affordability has been the issue.
Great video. I had no idea you were such a big fan of B&O. I have two 1900's, a 9500, and a Beocenter 2. I love them all, but the Beocenter 2 has the biggest "Wow" factor of them all. I love the idea that I can play CD's in the most special way, but also have access to my local FM radio stations as well. I have a pair of Penta MK 3's and two pairs of Belolab 4000's. Instead of paying a ton of money on wood grills, I am in the process of doing it myself. I got the square wood dowels and I plan to sand and stain them. I am going to use industrial standard double stick tape to apply them hoping they will stay in place. I just havent decided as of yet to apply the wood slats to the speaker cloth which will create a black background, or remove the cloth an apply directly to the aluminum perforated frame. What would you do?
Love that you're doing videos like these. Just so amazing to witness older B&O equipment being brought into 2021 and given new life. I recently bought a pair of 6000's, and i have them connected to the Pre-Outputs on a Yamaha WXC-50. I can't really figure out if whether it would be best to buy a Beolab 11 or a non B&O subwoofer to add to the system. It just seems rather complicated with the Beolab 11. Happy new year!

Steve...glad to see you here...you have a brilliant channel, which is a must for all B&O fans. See you at 'your place' soon🙂👍👍
Brian, you are so sweet. I hope you know that I sincerely enjoy seeing your face and comments each week! Happy New Year!
Got my hands on a pair of beolab penta, beolab 4000, beocenter 9000 and beocord 5500 for 300$ 👍
Have replaced the foam inside the Beolab 4000 so they don't die because of the old foam, which you should do too Andrew if you haven't done it already!
And working on reviving the pentas with new midrange foam/rubber and some upgrades to the amp and crossover
Wow I love this concept of old and modernizing it, giving me a lot of ideas! Old horse new shoes! 🐎 👟
Glad you found the video inspiring!
You bought VERY wisely! Plus, 8000s are art whereas a Sonos Soundbar (as good as it may be) is just a commodity IMHO.
@Andrew Robinson I bought 4 used beolab 8000 several years ago and coupled them on my Sony STR-6400ES receiver with a tannoy RC5 Sub , still an amazing sounding surround set .
But i want to expand to a set not only DTS or 5.1 but 7.1 or 9.2
Any idea which extra speakers and \ or receiver to use

Didn’t hear a word Andrew said. I was just drooling over the magnats the whole time ! I Want them. :).
See you Sunday then 😉
This is right up my alley.
Bang & Olufsen: The Love Story 😍
Andrew is a smitten kitten when it comes to the brand, that's for sure.
@@KristiWright Great design and quality never gets old.
How would you recommend connecting Pentas, a BeoSound 9000, and a pair of beolab28s for a while house setup that syncs?
@@masontmike With an NL/ML convertor if you can still find one. Or pull cables from the BS9000 to the 28's and use the BS9000 as an audio master.
Me too!!!
Appreciate you sharing Tim. I think you can count on a few project type videos in the new year!
I grew up listening to Beovox S45's. They are really nice. It's awesome to hear that you are enjoying them.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Happy to hear! Happy New Year!
From my understanding there are MK1 with improved material the serial number will tell.
@@bjorngustavsson8242 Yes, in some cases
I thoroughly enjoyed this experiment video. It’s a good break between reviews on new gear.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the looks of those speakers……
Me too!
For sure a revival of the beolab 5s would be amazing to me. I know that the 90s and the 50s kind of cover what they could do and modern DSP technology covers what the lens could do. But I'd love to see a double acoustic lens again.
The 5's get my vote too
I grew up in NYC near a B&O location that's now closed. My childhood dream was to buy the BeoCom 2 landline phone they made 😂
Their phones were the BOMB! I wanted one soooo bad.
Those phones were wild.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Ditto.
Yes. A cool experiment. All the best for 2022.
thanks, you too!
LOL
B&O was always about the phantasy of what the future would hold.
I think most old speakers can be saved. Enjoy the video Sean.
Steve at Sounds heavenly us a smashing guy as is Demitri at Prestige Creations there’s some really good honest people in the Bang and Olufsen community 👍👍👍
And as ever Andrew and Kristi give a fair and balanced in-depth review
Love this type of content. Had similar thoughts myself, vintage B&O is pretty cheap over here.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Luck you! Wish B&O used equipment was cheaper over here in USA!
I enjoy restoring/refinishing vintage speaker. Great video
Thanks, Josh. HNY!
@@KristiWright Happy New Year to you both also!
I had the penta series 2 with a Hi-Fi it was amazing, they were 30 years ahead I f the game with amplified speakers
B&O has proven time and time again that they're ahead of the curve. Thanks for watching!
B&O certainly seem to have re-invented themselves the last two years, good to see
They always seem to come to market every 5-10 years with something that you can bet other companies will mimic in short order.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Happy New Year to you & Kristi
Once again, an honest no holds barred from both of you. B & O was and is cool to look at and of course sound great. Always has been a step up from my beloved Bose stuff.
internal cabinet foam rot is a huge issue too. The black foam used inside the early BL4000/BL6000 cabinets degrades and shorts out the amps etc. They changed to a white foam half way through the production run.. No issues with the white foam. If you can get the mk2 of the BL4000 (ice power variant by all means get it!!)
Makes me proud to be Danish. Thank You for great reviews and videos
You may have inspired me to build some stands for my B&O RL60.2s I’ve had in the closet for too many years, my first “real” speakers I ever bought back in ‘89 or so.
I thought it was GREAT!
It's an alternative and for some that could mean a lot.
Happy holidays you two, I look forward to your videos in the new year
I love this kind of stuff.
Thanks 👍😁
Just don't forget the sub 😉
Look out for a Beolab 2 subwoofer. I don't know prices in the USA but in the UK you can find them from about £700 upward.
I have the Prestige Creation oak Wood frets on my 8000 mk2
They are very well made indeed , I also use cables from Sounds Heavenly too , great products 👍 .
Andrew I use the Bang and Olufsen Core on a different system to my 8000s
The system is one pair of Beolab 3 , Beosound Overture, Beosound 2 in between the Beolab 3s and a Beolab 11 sub woofer .
Bang and Olufsen are a unique brand they sound as good as they look it’s terrific Hi Fi
And my experience with Sounds Heavenly cables is 10 out of 10
And that also goes for the guys at Prestige Creations another 10 out of 10 .
I find the EQ options on the core enough tbh
I think you did a great job with these speakers, they look very nice. Great video.
Thank you so much!
They look amazing! I love grills.
The grilles are super cool!
@@KristiWright Maybe you should get some Beolab 5's in and give Prestige Creators a call again ;)
Always great to hear something different. Keep on experimenting
Killer combo. The Node saves the day once again.
10:40 as someone in the US that’s lived within the B&O ecosystem for most of my life. I feel this pain on a spiritual level.
It's hard out there for us US-based B&O fans.
The vids are always a treat
Thank you so much, NovaLive! We appreciate you watching.
I liked this kind of project video.
Thanks, Joseph. It was a fun, personal project!
Happy New Year. Awesome reviews, look forward to more of them in 2022.
Ps Andrew and Kristi keep up the FABULOUS work 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much!
happy new year Team! i love you!
Same to you!
Happy New Year!

Is DIY customisation a HiFi trend at the moment? I love seeing reviewers getting inventive like this. I also love how Kristi pulls no punches about the tinkering life: "This was kind of a pain in the butt". Fantastic stuff, as always!
Experiments are very cool, but yeah, you should set a budget before jumping in. Happy New Year 2022 to you and Christy!
Love this experiment. Why not have some fun (even though going down a rabbit hole on eBay isn't always fun) haha. The new grills look dope AF.
Cant help it, but i love your vintage videos a bit extra 🤓 the passion and work you put into this, the same goes to the restauration of the Pioneer ❤️
I would love to see the beosound 9000 in your livingroom!
Great video! I'm with Kristi, if you want to tinker, go for it. I just want things to work personally and not deal with playing around.
Wonderful...!!! Just wonderful experiment...!!! Thank you,,,!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Please make a review on the Beolab 17's.
Seconded!! you barely get those reviews
I love the look of the 4000's, and I hope to hear them some day. I actually just picked up a Beosystem 2500 that needs some work. I'm looking forward to getting it back into shape and enjoying it's sound and looks.
Receiving the bluesound node this week, also picking up the beolab 8000 with some new wooden covers can’t wait 😊 dichting my Bose for it, I hope I get a great experience from it 😁
Have fun!
Any updates to this exercise? I have the Beolab 9's paired with the Bluesound node and a PV1D sub.. The sound experience is really mind blowing
I do not know the model number, but I remember that CD changer they had years ago that held 5 CDs in line. One could mount it in just about any way you wished. Flat, on wall horizontally or vertical.
I know, some of us old school people who still listen to CDs.
6 in line. BeoSound 9000. Absolute classic
Nice review. In my opinion it’s better to invest into a Beosound or Beocenter to manage a pair of beolabs. You will then have another exceptional b&o product.
I have two B&O s3 i use with my Mac mini desktop system i love them
Not B&O (I always thought they were more style over substance) but still a blast from the past, I'm driving a pair of Meridian M30 MK2 active speakers (circa 1998) with the original stands using a Bluesound Node 2i.
I have to disagree Bang and Olufsen sound wonderful and I’ve had British hi fi separates for 20 years
This video was super interesting I love the idea of being able to increase the longevity of audio products as thats what put me off going for an all in one in a speaker.
The journey is more important than the destination, they say....so...let's continue the journey...
For about 500 us dollar you can get a Bang & Olufsen, Beosound 3000 mk 2 with Beolab 4000 speakers and remote in Denmark in good condition.
It is for sure that I will have B&O one day. I just need to persuade the Countess first ! She's not as excited as I am. =)
You should have a look at the Beocreate 4!
Andrew i'm work in B&O Store in Lima, Perú, we Have a Lot of stands, cables and accesories for vintage B&O products if You need anytime.
Good to know! Thank you!
Surely putting wooden slats on a speaker not designed around them is going to SERIOUSLY affect the output response?
Yep, I checked the Dutch Ebay and just like that I can get a working pair including the stands for €499,-. 😉
And a set of stands for €175,-.
I am jealous.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Next time check your European fans and we can get you some B&O gear! 😃
Damn! Those are sexy little things.
This was very enjoyable. Well done.
Thanks for watching, Jim!
Any chance you're interested in a B&O Beogram RX2 turntable for your collection? 🙂
