There were 2 issues over the ball selection that I can recall in the past. Woosnam/Faldo were a successful partnership in 1987, even though they didn't like each other. Woosnam was the longer hitter and they agreed to use his ball in the next Ryder Cup. Faldo hit first and when Woosnam stood over the ball on the fairway he saw it was Faldo's ball selection and they couldn't change it for the rest of the round. They lost and Woosnam blamed Faldo big time and refused to play with him again. Another Ryder Cup, Azinger was against Seve/Olazabal and Seve accused Azinger of changing balls during the round, using the longer ball on certain holes etc. Azinger denied it and made a fuss about it. A few holes later Seve checked Azingers ball again and Azinger was forced to admit he was changing the ball type during the round. Amusingly Azinger publicly blamed Seve for that even though Azinger was the one breaking the rules. Both those incidents were high-profile incidents at the time considering they involved Seve and Faldo, the top golfers of the time. Attention to ball selection was more closely observed after that.
