Sometimes it is better to salvage the parts, also it is always educational to repair things. So, if you are an new engineer, you get to see and learn from other people's design. About the electronics, even some working equipment are not worth keeping. Say IBM PC with 8088 chip! or CRT TVs.

I'm surprised you didn't ohm out the laptop power connector prior to purchasing a new one. Same with the charger cable.
I am puzzled that it seems you didn't check the output of the laptop power supply. That would have been my first step.
Yeah, and couldn't you just buy a new power plug? Or maybe get the lead and plug from an old power supply or car charger or something.
