Loved this video so much, I'm going to create a nonprofit that saves/plants trees, removes plastic from entering the ocean, and helping feed people in impoverished countries, mainly I'm working with Kenya now :)
Great video! Thanks for sharing about the board of directors being financially responsible for the org's financial health and to avoid setting up a dynamic where they're not from the beginning! That's a great tip!
Thank you so much for this video. I just subbed. You give some of the best advice on this subject that I have found. Thank you for all of the information and ideas. God bless you!
What is the foundation you mentioned at 10:12? Austin or Awesome Foundation for start up funding? I didn't see a link listed. Thanks! This is helpful since I have very limited funds to start with
Hi, Tiffany. I appreciate all of your information. You're so awesome for sharing so much knowledge. I have a question about donations, are we able to receive donations of products needed for our mission? We are providing backpacks with hygiene products, snacks, water, socks, etc. as well as a tent. Can we receive these types of donations as we are in the process of incorporating the organization? Do we provide a receipt to the donor for the cost (if new) or fair market value of their donations (if they are used blankets and clothing)?
Hi, thanks so much for watching my videos. If you are providing a receipt to a donor and you’re not incorporated there’s not much they can do with that if they want to write it off. After you’ve incorporated and pursuing 501c3 status then if you apply within 27 months of your incorporation they can retroactively write it off. But don’t put the value of the items on the receipt, just identify what they gave
At 10:12, a few seconds after introducing community foundations, you mention the Awesome Foundation. I am part of AF which, to be clear, is not a community foundation. For example, it has no endowment and it is unlikely to pay your startup costs. Also, unrelated: Starting a nonprofit before your project is well underway is a waste of energy and time you could regret later if you have to go through a bunch more paperwork to disband. Instead, start as an informal thing or as a fiscally sponsored project under an existing nonprofit. Concerning the first point, the average for a community foundation in the US is around $15 million a year given. For an average Awesome Foundation chapter? $10,000 TOTAL for all grants.
@@BossonaBudget I edited to be clearer. Thanks for engaging with me about it. I just don't want mismatched expectations, nor is it fun to go through lots of proposals we can't fund.
I’m very excited to apply for community grants as startup funds for our organization. As Chair, I have encouraged the board (only two other people) to list 4-5 places in their general area for potential places where we could apply. I have posted a Google spreadsheet in our drive to post on, but (other than me listing 7 places to start), they have posted nothing over the last two weeks since it was posted. What can do I to excite them? It is disconcerting that they have not done what could take five minutes to help fundraise in order to begin programs. Thank you! I watch your videos often and they are extremely helpful and informative!
Thanks so much for watching my videos! I’ve found it best to do things like that in the midst of a meeting. Scheduling an activity as part of the agenda( even if it’s virtual) for everyone to fill in the sheet together has helped me when I need folks to complete an assignment.
There are a lot of good online resources on the topic but generally it’s a local public foundation that manages funds from local donors and helps maintain and disperse them.
Hi Jerome, every state is different with its processes, but usually you have to start a new nonprofit corporation. But this is general info, I would consult a professional in your state.
You don't necessarily need 501c3 status to raise money, but you do need to follow the state rules on charitable solicitation. If you are pending 501c3 status, you just need to disclose that to your donors (or if you don't have it at all).
Hi there, I really appreciate your help to us. I'm from India and currently staying in Chicago. I want to start up a Non-Profit Org. I have some questions regarding this. Please let me know your contact info so that I can talk to you and clarify my questions. Thanks!

Can you share where I said that the Awesome foundation is a community foundation? I’m clear that it’s not and mentioned that they give smaller grants

Recommended business structure for a family reunion
I would consult a business attorney or tax professional on that one.
Amazing video!!! Do you do one on one consultation? If so, what is the fee?
Hi! Yes, I do. I do one- time sessions: calendly.com/bossonabudget/bossupsession
I also have an ongoing group coaching community on fundraising: rebrand.ly/moneyonamission
@@BossonaBudget would you say this is beneficial to utilize when you are only in the idea phase ?
Yes, it will work, but just keep in mind that any money you raise before you start your organization may count as personal income and is taxable.

Is it possible to make business a non profit?

What if you stress that you are trying to get a 501c3 license? What if you need $3,000 and want to raise money?
