@@Wikarian99PLI have like320 hours in the game, I would have to guess at least 48 hours of that time is progress i lost because of crashing without saves.
My favourite way to crash the game is playing space stage for hours while forgetting to save and just traveling to another system. That always makes my day 😊
i’m extremely paranoid about saving for this reason 😭 i had the game crash suddenly YEARS ago and ever since that incident i’ve started to save at least every fifteen minutes. unless i’m playing civ because it’s real easy to softlock your game and make it unbeatable in hard mode civ 💀
2:37 this is due to the limbs not actually being asymmetrical as the Grox were made before the asymmetric patch. This crash only applies to limbs so this issue doesn't happen with the other 2 maxis creations with asymmetrical parts as they do not use asymmetric limbs. Those being Eyeguy and Anticipaste.
My favorite method of crashing, which seems to happen every single time, is when you're playing creature stage and edit your creature two times in a row without quitting to desktop. When playing a game for a while, spore will log me out. When it does this, it saves a copy of the creature every time it exits the editor. It puts the most recent copy at the top of the sporepedia and the older copies at the bottom. Scrolling to the bottom of the sporepedia or encountering that creature in your game will always crash it unless you quit to desktop. It will even crash if you view the sporepedia in the galaxy home screen.
More curiously though, the saved creature copies that are saved while logged out appear as shared, but cannot be commented on, added to a sporecast, or found by online search. Furthermore, because these creatures are already marked as shared, they cannot be re-shared to fix this and must be touched in the editor to make a new copy and then shared outside of a game. The original, quasi-shared creatures can then be deleted (apart from the game's current avatar) to remove clutter from the sporepedia that would otherwise be re-downloaded upon every fresh install of the game, but for some reason only on that machine??? Even though I can't find their files on my hard drive anywhere... also deleting these will screw with a game's timeline and make the generation pngs blank or in some cases completely white boxes, but this is something that Spore is somehow cool with.
AFAIK the improper "shared" creations along with the log-out after every edit is caused by the game trying to auto share your changed creature every time you edit it as you progress the creature stage, this was I believe originally done to fill up the online sporepedia with lots of creatures from other player's playthroughs with diverse stats and levels to pollinate people's playthroughs with, but the functionality seemingly either broke or was disabled deliberately server-side very early on in spore's life for some reason so the feature doesn't work properly and attempts to still share your edits but freaks out and logs you out while trying to.

For those wondering about why Windows doesnt allow those files to be used, it is because these are device files back from the times of IBM's PC-DOS. These are basically just device drivers that exist to look like normal files. As for why Windows cares to protect files from an OS made by a company that is noticeably not Microsoft? Because PC-DOS is literally the ancestor of Windows. Windows was built on the base of MS-DOS, which is a direct clone of PC-DOS for IBM-clones. Which means that a LOT of things at one time were programmed and physically designed around these exact device files. Some of those programs and actual physical devices are still used today. Currently, my most common source of crashes is of my own doing - messing something up when modding the game. Though, another way I know to crash Spore is just to launch it and to play a lot - because sometimes, vital savedata files - i.e, Pollination.package - get corrupted by the game. This causes a game crash on startup. I think the reason why loading the cell-stage from another crashes, but any other stages don't, is because the Cell Stage is coded fundamentally differently - it's the only stage that does not require the existence of a planet.

This comment isn't related to the content of this video, but on your last stream you asked if this video got pushed into the recommended for non-members of the channel. I am not a member and it got recommended to me, but when I clicked on it, it said "members only" and wouldn't allow it to be played. You mentioned being worried about how that might affect the algorithm or viewer behavior, so I figured I would mention it here, and note that after the video got full release, it was again bumped into my recommended list, now watchable. Will also note that I was mildly annoyed about being shown a video I couldn't watch, but definitely not at you. It's completely normal to have videos available ahead of time behind a paywall, and I'm glad you have ways to get paid, but I was annoyed at youtube itself for pushing the video to me, since it felt like them trying to pressure me into getting a channel membership, by essentially using for video as a kind of ad by withholding it, if that makes sense.
Thank you so much for letting me know! I really wish the Members only videos wouldn't get pushed out publicly and TH-cam would let me control it better without making everyone see paywall content recommended. I might have to come up with another solution for members.
One of my favourite glitches was before I had the steam version, was where my creature spawned on land for the start-of-creature-stage cutscene, and then my creature went back out to the ocean to build its nest. First impression was that this was a typical graphical quirk, but no! This caused the ocean to behave like land and the land to behave as ocean, softlocking the save, since there was no food or other creatures available in the ocean and walking on land would cause the sea creature to appear out of the ground and eat you. My creatures could walk on the water (or slightly above it, anyway) iirc. Hitting the windows key and/or screenshotting spore also works to crash the game for me without fail!
That nest in the ocean glitch appears to be pretty common on the older versions of the game. If that happens again we can migrate to another coastal nest and that will allow us to walk back on the land. And using the Freecam cheat can make it easier to find another nest to migrate to as well. Does taking a screenshot still crash the game even on the Steam version? I don't think that's happened to me, but interesting to know!
Another inconsistent way is to rapidly place buildings in space stage. This happens when you place a building or turret on top of another causing that building to relocate rapidly to an empty space.
Another command that crashes the game is typing "prop shaderpath 4" into the command bar. Upon entering you will get a windows error message saying that the game does not have the files to run, and then it crashes. Upon reloading, the game goes back to normal.
PNGs have a really cool ability to save "extra" data that's sort of hidden. The actual picture of the creature is like preview, then there's extra "model" info along with the PNG that Spore is actually using to import a creature into the game! It's a really clever system!
the real creature information is saved on the image alpha layer, it makes me wonder if anybody has figured out how to augment creature files just by reverse engineering that system yet
My personal favorite crash is adding legs to a creature coming out of cell stage in the 1.04 patch. It didn't shock me or surprise me. I was just disappointed.
Now cover softlocks in Spore. I remember that no matter what, there was this one planet I'd get, relatively close to the galaxy's center, that when you made it to creature stage your Spore pack would surface like, way further from land than they should be, and they swim closer in the cutscene. When the cutscene is finished, you can see land now. But your Spores made a nest IN THE WATER. And if you walk on land the sea monster CLIPS THROUGH DIRT to eat you. You have no source of food. No means of interaction. No bones. You cannot progress any further.
I showed that in a Creature Stage glitch compilation video, and a way to fix it is to manually migrate to another nest on the coastline by swimming around the continent. An easier way to fix it is using the "FreeCam" cheat to manually migrate as well :)
I lost 3 space saves to a deadly softlock that occurred if you skipped cutscenes in adventures. after completing the adventure there was a high chance for every planet npc (civilians and creatures) to freeze in place and be untouchable so every mission asking you to abduct or kill an npc would be impossible to complete
I casually played Spore from start to Tribal stage the other day without saving and it somehow miraculously didn't crash. I only realised when I went to save lol
I thought me crashing during creature stage was only a me thing. it didn’t use to happen, but then it started happening every time I died. Sometimes I hadn’t saved yet so I would loose all my progress. I started spamming the save option, and I think maybe pressing escape to skip the cutscene prevents the crash, but I don’t remember.
proud 420th view also thanks for teaching me what to avoid when playing, my spore is about as stable as a house of cards made of chocolate, used as a fireguard
Way to crash spore: 1. Create a building 2. Before you place anything, press the paint like button and press any creation 3. When you place something in the builder editor, you get this glitched paint style and if you try to make any creation after and make it paint like one that has the secret texture, it will crash the game!
Around 2012 when i open the tribal/city/spacial creature outfit editor my game always crashed. One day idk what da heck happened but my planet became flat, no sea, no mountains, absolute flat, a flat round light skin colored planet.
@@KinglyValence youre the best! Also, when I try to load the grox png into the game it says that the creation contains part that are not installed or something like that. How can I fix that?
@@bluespectrum1348 That's odd, are you dropping the PNG into a creature editor? Try it in the main menu as well and see if the grox appear in the Sporepedia.
I wonder if it's possible to add a spine to a Vehicle "Creature" or someway to not make it crash Just very curious how the game would behave with those parts (My guess is that nothing would really change if you still had the vehicle parts, as they probably don't have any collision or behaviour)
We can bring a creature into the vehicle editor, add vehicle parts, then bring it back into the creature editor and that will work without crashing to have a creature with vehicle parts on it. But I couldn't find a way to get a vehicle from scratch to work as a creature. The creations I'm pretty sure can be infinitely swapped around as many editors as we want to add all kinds of random things on it haha.
You could maybe take a very basic "blob" out of the creature creator, just a ball of flesh with a spine, and build the vehicle around it? Not a "pure" way of doing it, but it'd probably work no?
I would love an in-depth explanation video on how the game can even load creatures from a simple .png file. I've been wondering about this since I was a little kid playing this for the first time. lol
This is a really good video about how Spore creatures work and how they are saved (made by someone else) th-cam.com/video/ZFdj9wPNSD0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k-ob7KNsLDiG-yeJ But for how creature PNGs work, how I understand it is the PNG format allows for extra data to be stored along with the image that can hold the info that Spore is looking for. Whereas something like a jpeg file is just the image itself and can't hold anything else I think.
I had this glitch had that made 2 of my saves completely unplayable. in tribal stage (and only in tribal stage) my game would crash everytime i entered that save and played for a couple minutes, making the save entirely unplayable, idk what I did (I haven't had this happen to me in atleast 2 years but I just wanna know if anyone knows what causes it)
I remember back in the day my first PC had a terrible Nvidia card with 1 gig of ram, and for whatever reason Spore crashed every time I tried to enter the tribal or civil outfitter editor in-game
@@KinglyValence Sorry, I was admittedly being a little dramatic. I looked into it and my issue was that GA would not load when opening Spore via the EA app that was forced upon the world, instead just the base game. Apparently its just an EA app issue that I don't think much can be done about (RIP Galactic Adventures). but attempts to mess around with the files or uninstalling and reinstalling would stop the game from properly loading for a few attempts too (hence my comment 2 months ago out of frustration!).
there's a mod out there that fixes these crashes. it doesn't fix every crash but it fixes plenty of them. it works on ga, but i'm not sure about the main game.
The ModAPI Launcher that works with the mods only works with the Galactic Adventures .exe, yeah. I use a mod that fixes a different more randomly occurring crash in Space Stage that I didn't include in this video, since it's not super repeatable on purpose. But yeah, there are some really good mod crash fixes out there! :D
2:03 I also have the bot parts but they dont do this because they have sing 4 on them. not sure if this is a legitimate copy discrepancy or not, but they also only appear for omnivores too in my spore games.
to my knowledge Maxis never released fixed versions of the Bot parts, so most people who distribute the parts now modify them to have a Sing level, because they just straight up crash the game if the creatures don't have a second, working mouth
Yeah I believe most places and mods that include the bot parts added Sing to the bot mouths to prevent the Sing crash. But the bot mouths shown in the video are the original unpatched version of the bot parts.
Hi, I'm not sure where else I can reach you so I'll comment here; I think I somehow managed to cancel the brain-growing cutscene animation in cell stage? When I ate the last green chunk that lets you evolve to creature stage, I was hit by a Bloato cell at the same time. The cutscene didn't play and it automatically allowed me to advance to creature stage. Is this a well-known exploit?
Yeah this happens occasionally, when getting hit at the same time as the cutscene would play, the cutscene is skipped. This is actually noted in the speedrunning rules because it's known to happen sometimes. Normally the speedrun time ends at the cutscene, but if it's skipped then we just time when the progress bar is full :)
i legit didnt know about a lot of this wow so the inability to save on a planet was to prevent an actual technical issue? i thought it was meant to prevent like. some minor annoying bugs but no the save file straight up just bricks if you do this. i wonder why???
Yep! I played a lot of Magic back in High School and Nicol Bolas was the coolest artwork of the cards I had and used as my profile pic for years and just never changed it!

Interesting, never knew Spore can crush due to russian language, because... I play with it and it never crushed because of it (even if I open settings menu). Maybe because my game is by default set to russian, idk.
Yeah maybe because everything else is defaulted to English for me including Windows and Steam causing the issues, but I'm not really sure why this one occurs.
@@KinglyValence I know that in some other games some strange things happen, when russian language is selected. For example, in Outer Wilds it is the fastest language for translating alien texts.
This happens when you place a building or turret on top of another causing that building to relocate rapidly to an empty space.
beautiful, flawless, no notes
i've come here to say that after like 150~ hours i've never crashed spore, i didn't know there were so many ways to do it honestly.
Another command that crashes the game is typing "prop shaderpath 4" into the command bar. Upon entering you will get a windows error message saying that the game does not have the files to run, and then it crashes. Upon reloading, the game goes back to normal.
Godly
How the heck does Spore even save my creations as PNGs?
That's something I'm always scratching my head about.
I think even just looking at the game will make it crash
this made me realize as a kid my save probably corrupted because id saved between the creature and tribal stage....
i wonder how many of these are specific to the steam version
My personal favorite crash is adding legs to a creature coming out of cell stage in the 1.04 patch. It didn't shock me or surprise me. I was just disappointed.
It sounds like those Spore-crashing speedrunners were just russian to finnish the game.
10:55 "These edibles ain't shi-......"
Hey, does pasting vehicles into cell stage crash?
Finnish is too complicated even for Spore 😂
I casually played Spore from start to Tribal stage the other day without saving and it somehow miraculously didn't crash. I only realised when I went to save lol
Spore is the most stable EA game ever released
I thought me crashing during creature stage was only a me thing. it didn’t use to happen, but then it started happening every time I died. Sometimes I hadn’t saved yet so I would loose all my progress.
I started spamming the save option, and I think maybe pressing escape to skip the cutscene prevents the crash, but I don’t remember.
proud 420th view
also thanks for teaching me what to avoid when playing, my spore is about as stable as a house of cards made of chocolate, used as a fireguard
Bro casually has rarest planet type as his home planet's moon
Way to crash spore:
1. Create a building
2. Before you place anything, press the paint like button and press any creation
3. When you place something in the builder editor, you get this glitched paint style and if you try to make any creation after and make it paint like one that has the secret texture, it will crash the game!
I'm not able to follow this completely, maybe a quick video demo would help? :)
Around 2012 when i open the tribal/city/spacial creature outfit editor my game always crashed. One day idk what da heck happened but my planet became flat, no sea, no mountains, absolute flat, a flat round light skin colored planet.
This video crashed my game.
How can I get the Dr Pepper pack parts in Spore? I've got Spore base game, GA and Creepy and Cute
I linked a download in the description with installation instructions :)
@@KinglyValence I got it now, thanks!
I'd recommend you get a modded version of the bot parts pack as well
I wonder how many of these stop working when run on Origin or the disc version of the game
I didn't experience a lot of crashing in Spore, only when I downloaded mods, and tried to build creatures with way more parts than in vanilla game
I wonder if it's possible to add a spine to a Vehicle "Creature" or someway to not make it crash
Just very curious how the game would behave with those parts (My guess is that nothing would really change if you still had the vehicle parts, as they probably don't have any collision or behaviour)
I was wondering the exact same thing
We can bring a creature into the vehicle editor, add vehicle parts, then bring it back into the creature editor and that will work without crashing to have a creature with vehicle parts on it. But I couldn't find a way to get a vehicle from scratch to work as a creature. The creations I'm pretty sure can be infinitely swapped around as many editors as we want to add all kinds of random things on it haha.
You could maybe take a very basic "blob" out of the creature creator, just a ball of flesh with a spine, and build the vehicle around it? Not a "pure" way of doing it, but it'd probably work no?
@@alexisauld7781 Yeah that should work to build vehicle parts around the creature to look like just a vehicle.
I would love an in-depth explanation video on how the game can even load creatures from a simple .png file. I've been wondering about this since I was a little kid playing this for the first time. lol
This is a really good video about how Spore creatures work and how they are saved (made by someone else) th-cam.com/video/ZFdj9wPNSD0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k-ob7KNsLDiG-yeJ
But for how creature PNGs work, how I understand it is the PNG format allows for extra data to be stored along with the image that can hold the info that Spore is looking for. Whereas something like a jpeg file is just the image itself and can't hold anything else I think.
nice
Sometimes when I delete units in civ stage the game crashes
my game consistently crashes when I try to delete something from the sporepedia :c
i found that trying to access the cut city stage (id 5) crashes
10:54 my boy is moving on borrowed time. He knows Spode was not present in his creation.
I had this glitch had that made 2 of my saves completely unplayable. in tribal stage (and only in tribal stage) my game would crash everytime i entered that save and played for a couple minutes, making the save entirely unplayable, idk what I did (I haven't had this happen to me in atleast 2 years but I just wanna know if anyone knows what causes it)
(Spore is a VERY finished game ( sarcasm )
I remember back in the day my first PC had a terrible Nvidia card with 1 gig of ram, and for whatever reason Spore crashed every time I tried to enter the tribal or civil outfitter editor in-game
You should do a video on how to actually download, open and play spore. I can't even seem to get GA to work anymore!
Is the game not launching at all? Or is it launching, then immediately closing itself?
@@KinglyValence Sorry, I was admittedly being a little dramatic. I looked into it and my issue was that GA would not load when opening Spore via the EA app that was forced upon the world, instead just the base game. Apparently its just an EA app issue that I don't think much can be done about (RIP Galactic Adventures). but attempts to mess around with the files or uninstalling and reinstalling would stop the game from properly loading for a few attempts too (hence my comment 2 months ago out of frustration!).
I once crashed spore by picking very broken planet made by 0kep in ga editor, made it small and then reentered the editor
the reason why vehicle creatures crash is that they lack a spine
I saw WildTangent was there some FATE gaming?
there's a mod out there that fixes these crashes. it doesn't fix every crash but it fixes plenty of them.
it works on ga, but i'm not sure about the main game.
Hi, I'm not sure where else I can reach you so I'll comment here;
I think I somehow managed to cancel the brain-growing cutscene animation in cell stage? When I ate the last green chunk that lets you evolve to creature stage, I was hit by a Bloato cell at the same time. The cutscene didn't play and it automatically allowed me to advance to creature stage. Is this a well-known exploit?
Yeah this happens occasionally, when getting hit at the same time as the cutscene would play, the cutscene is skipped. This is actually noted in the speedrunning rules because it's known to happen sometimes. Normally the speedrun time ends at the cutscene, but if it's skipped then we just time when the progress bar is full :)
@@KinglyValence I did not know that! Thank you for explaining :P
I've had the game crash so hard it wouldn’t even OPEN again and I had to uninstall and reinstall it.
i legit didnt know about a lot of this wow
so the inability to save on a planet was to prevent an actual technical issue? i thought it was meant to prevent like. some minor annoying bugs but no the save file straight up just bricks if you do this. i wonder why???
From my experience the best way is to not save for an hour, that’ll do it.
Yo guys, when was the last time he made a thumbnail of the grox having laser eyes?
Am I the only one spore never crashed on
I wonder, that might make for a good poll! Or you're the luckiest Spore player ever! ;)
SPORE DID WHAT?!
I’ve got several hundred hours of progress in this game and I’ve never had it crash a single time.
I wonder what I’m doing right.
Spore never crashed for me and I definitely have over 500 hours
Moi!
Wait hey I just realized your PFP is Nicol Bolas, do you play MtG?
Yep! I played a lot of Magic back in High School and Nicol Bolas was the coolest artwork of the cards I had and used as my profile pic for years and just never changed it!
@@KinglyValence Siiiiiiiick. I respect that, magic is very cool and Nicol Bolas is just a cool character all around.
And now Spore is your thing! I’d say you have a nice assortment of hobbies.
I’m already subbed but I probably would’ve just off of that lol.
So the game crashes when you do something that a normal player would not do under normal circumstances during play. Got it.
Probably something to do with cyrillic alphabet, but how I know it doesn't happen with other cyrillic languages, so still strange.
Step one: play tribal on my pc.
I hate how the game dont let me log in and play others adventures.
Step 1: play
