Not just that, the performances that are live are also so heavily edited, that it just sounds ridiculous. For example Itzys performance on Sketchbook sounded super robotic, and I watched Hyorins cover of Chitty chittty bang bang on Immortal song and it was the same - some parts sounded like some amateur did some autotuning in 5 min and called it a day. They edit out any shakiness, breathing and anything that doesn't sound 100% perfect. Live performances with flaws are what makes them perfect, but I guess people are so used to pre recorded vocals that if a live performance is not edited like crazy it will be seen as if the idols are not good singers :/
It’s been like that for a while now. The microphone is starting to become an accessory in kpop now. It’s gotten to the point where idols are just looking to avoid the microphone when doing encore stages.
Check out Stayc, their performances are about 99% live
they took advantage of the pandemic, no live audiences, more cuts and retakes to be made
not singing live takes away their presence. One of the biggest reasons they seem “robotic” is because they are a smaller group that lipsyncs most of the time :( you can feel a difference between their encores and their normal stages, their encores feel more hyped up and fun bc theyre not lipsyncing (i think)

@Raúl u said that she can do it perfectly and next second say that it's not going to be perfect? Which one is it? Also, dancing is a huge part of why idols might not sing as well as they can. It is biologically impossible to sing perfectly during certain moves like the chorus part in Black Mamba.

i really think them not singing live is one of the reasons why their stage presence isnt good. idols perform very differently when they sing live and dance at the same time and i personally want them to do that as much as they can. i dont care about them not sounding perfect, i WANT to hear them sing live and its only normal for them to not sound as good when they're dancing through the whole song
edit: so aespa is performing at coachella in a few days and im very excited to see if they'll finally sing live and how their stage presence will be especially on such a big stage and a large audience

i dont care too much when a group lipsyncs, but when they/the fans act like they dont lipsync it really gets on my nervesss "omg she eating CDssss" yeah girl its prerecorded. You wont hear them breathe at all, theyll hit a g5 while doing jumping jacks, theyll have 10 layered metal necklaces right next to the mic that you wont hear, and have a completely relaxed face, and fans are still like "omg slay vocal queen, no one else doing it like her" huh???
They can lipsync as long as they want (or their company, idc) but if their fans are willing to tell me that the "vocal queen's" are hitting some incredibly high notes while barely opening the mouth when they "sing live" and have none face expression because they are committed to their robotic concept then we have a problem. No one is saying they can't sing and I don't want to see the "live singing" in the recording of the song when that's literally their job, just stop the delusion of the girls giving °-° when singing a high note on a stage presentation for "the sake of the concept"

The line "SM doesn't let their rookies sing live" is definitely not true. EXO and Red Velvet sang their debut songs LIVE. Some were even making fun of D.O. because of his voice cracks (ofcourse there were times that they lipsync, but definitely not "always"). And also, Wendy developed vocal nodules because of singing while straining her voice in the "shine on me" part (correct me if I'm wrong). But I do hope SM would let them sing live, because they're getting tired of it that they're not even trying to make it look like they sing live anymore. Let the girls sing!
Wendy developed nodules in her trainee days (watch unnie slamdunk ep 5) and debuted with it. I think she still has it until now. I'm impressed with her. :)
Yeah but it was 3rd gen where lip-sinc was an 'addition' (Maybe with the exception of some groups like BP who rarely sang live) In the 4th generation, this becomes something normal. People praise idols for their singing even though they don't sing. I don't like it, but it's also horrible how people can hate idols for one mistake. They judge their encores where they do not sing according to their expectations and call them not talented. Encores should always be a time where you thank the fans for the award and you celebrate it, and you don't give another performance because you have to do it because otherwise you can't sing. I hate people who bully idols to such an extent that they are afraid to sing (for example, Momo).
The current situation also allows labels to easily manipulate fans.
Honestly, I don't like how idols pretend to sing even more when it's actually a pre-recorded vocals or back-track. Especially for encores. However, in the case of the Aespa, you can see that at least they are trying to be louder. However, in other groups there were situations where the idols panicked because they missed the lines and the audio continued to play. The fans still believed it was live and praised their idols for live vocals XD
Even snsd sung ITNW live. Idk why SM makes their artists use pre recorded vocals MORE these past few years, when they are already known for their stable vocals 😫

Can i just say this video is such a breathe of fresh air. I don't even bother looking at the comments under stages because I know there are thousands of fans raving about how their group sang live when it's just so blatantly obvious that it was a pre-recorded performance, but they genuinely believe it was a live. Some of them even say things like "you have low expectations of these idols" like no they're human as well..your expectations are the ones that are high.

I usually don't bother with mnet performances because I know they either heavily autotune "live" performances or give heavy backing tracks that it's almost lip-synching and with Aespa, I thought they were way too good to be having vocals that are almost like if not the exact same as the recording in every "live" performance, even in SBS that usually will have actual live performances with minimal to no backing tracks or autotune. I've been suspicious of the performances and a bit disappointed because I've seen and listened to Aespa's live singing and they're actually excellent singers with unique "colors" (especially Ningning and Winter). It's a shame that their "live" performances aren't really live.
the only times they've sung a performance live was when they did the encores. other than that, they still have not sung live while dancing, which is disappointing as a fan. i know it's not their fault though! i'm proud to say they're all exceptional singers. SM LET AESPA SING LIVE!!
exactly and what bugged me even more is that there was still a backing track so we couldnt hear their voices completely. we‘ve seen so many clips of them singing in interviews and we know they can sing so why not live
They did live in next level performance posted in their youtube, the sung live and it's proven in their behind the scene but the thing is sm didn't use their live vocals and instead use their pre-recorded. Aespa recorded the performance with live vocals and sm use the pre-recorded in the final outcome.

I find this sad because there are still some very good vocalist in kpop... Chungha in her dance rehearsal video was explaining that for making certain moves it is literally impossible for her to breathe, she has to dance couple of seconds while blocking her breathing... hard to sing at the same time. When you see the earlier gens of kpop, the emphasis was much less on the dance if you compare to today where Kpop is very popular for the choreo and the visuals, and that good singing isn't even a requirement anymore. I find that it really became a "product" and the idols are a "product" not human beings with their limitations. They have to look and be perfect in every way possible while being "live". And that it puts soooo much pressure on the idols that they don't even dare singing live anymore...

It's so annoying that companies and some fans can't see that imperfections like shaky voice, voice cracks, heavy breathing are what make the performance interesting and "alive"
Oh and they are probably the first group that have literal BACKTRACK on encores (i mean backtrack with vocals, not instrumental alone) even JYP didn't make Twice singing encores with vocals in the back even tho they struggle doing encores and are so stressed out that they don't sound well at all

I'm sorry, but those are signs of vocalists who haven't been trained well/enough or properly, or have been given choreos unsuited to vocal work. It's a fault of the performance, is not, and should not be encouraged as good live singing - it being live is the 'alive' part of a live performance - the nuances between a good vocalist's stage and studio performances, the way notes are handled differently but still well, and alterations are made in vocal performances to account for the live nature. You're excusing poor work on the part of companies shipping out rookies with poor vocals - something that's increasingly common in the past few years. (edit: obvs difficult choreos will never have stable/great vocals but they shouldn't be expected to do live vocals on thsoe lol.. also ike, situations where vocals are really strained like encores are just, ugh, rough? This is how idols get injuries, and they shouldn't be having to sound strained.. give them proper breaks please guys)

the reason people talk about aespa more than other groups is that they are from sm and also their main focus is vocals not dance. the other 4th gen groups also lip-sync but their choreographies are like workouts not saying aespa's choreographies are not hard but they don't have jumps or big moments for people to overlook their vocals. and lip-syncing for encores really made them look worse like some groups sing live even when they are struggling they may get criticized for vocal abilities but people praise them when they improve. for I've many people said that their vocals are not as good as aespa but on contrary, they were singing live unlike them.
true. When you look at e.g. Itzy, their debut song or wannabe where key wise to high for them to sing but for not shy they could sing it really well. Also Korean has kind if a soft pronouncing which makes even bland singers sound somewhat okay. Even if they scream their lines and it's a mess. I'll rather listen to that than them not singing at all. I wished they where more like red velvet or. Irene and Yeri aren't the best singers but even they sound better. Black Mamba maybe was key wise too high but Next Level is just them talking and when they can't sing so high, a confident singer would just sing a lower key or just idk sing something different.
i feel like aespa after two comebacks still hasn't got that what other groups have such as stayc or weeekly. They talk instead of sing when they are out of breath.

@@purpleplanet888 True, their choreo is enough for their vocals to be shaky. It might look easy but it's not. I'm always out of breathe after dancing their full choreo because it also requires certain amount of energy to execute the dance well. They are bouncing, popping, and they need to control their power. And as far as I know on their second encore, they used instrumentals but with the hidden vocals so their vocals are more clearer and you can hear their voices well than the other one.
This dance is pretty hard to sing the choreo have a lot of popping isolation and body lock which it's suitable for the male Kpop group ITZY's choreo focusing more in Big movemenf and their song not really hard song compare to AESPA

To me these ‘perfect’ performances make it a lot more empty and really fake. In my opinion singing live makes it perfect even if it the choreo is hard and it doesn’t sound perfect, its really impressive which adds to the performance

The easiest way is to just take two performances and make them play at the same time. For aespa, all that I have tried were identical. That doesn't mean they are not talented, but they are not singing live. If SM is scared they won't be able to hit so many high notes they can give them songs with less difficult parts, it's not like you can't have a good song without several high notes. The problem in general is - for aespa and also many other 4th gen idols, that they have so many pre recorded stages that a live stage would stand out maybe too much, since you would go from perfection to idols being breathless, shaky, occasionally flat (of course if the live stage wouldn't be post edited, like so many are).
Older kpop fans have nothing against that (I personally think imperfect stages make a perfect performance) because we are used to see real live stages from years ago, where they had mostly one take so if they tripped, fell, had voice cracks it was all left in there, but newer fans are used more to those polished and perfect versions and could possibly react negative if the idol shatters the illusion of hitting a high note while dancing and barely moving their mouth and with absolutely zero strain.

i would rather say that there are some specific groups like MAMAMOO , BTS , itzy , txt , enhypen etc. most of the time sing live with less backtrack voices.......

I totally remember EXO and Red Velvet singing live in their rookie days even on the second comeback IcC you can heard RV sing it live clearly but for aespa there literally is no live stages. I know they are fully capable of sining live and i just hope we get to see them sing again soon a
When they debuted, I understand that SM didn't let them sing live to focus more on the choreography. However, with Next Level and Savage, I don't think the choreo is as intense as Black Mamba to not warrant a live performance at least once. We're already in the 4th gen of kpop idols, being a rookie shouldn't be an excuse anymore not to perform live. I was really hoping they'd perform Savage live since the choreo for it was quite simple compared to their previous songs. But to my disappointment, they didn't.

i wouldn't call the choreo simple but yeah its not so intense that u cant pull off a live recording with a backtrack like other kpop groups do (the ones that sing live at least, i can think of a couple groups now considered well-respected seniors that have still only sung live a handful of times in their careers but thats another topic~)

Tbf it's not just them. Since the pandemic and no crowd being around, all the backtracks have taken over and the artificial processing. Some singers still try to sing over them, but it's not the raw "live" performances I'm hoping for on most occasions unfortunately. Another reason I'm not that big of a fan for music shows.

It's really gotten so much worse! I generally only watch music shows when my ults are having a comeback, and it was so noticeable how last year from January over May to November the number of artists singing live rapidly reduced to whole shows where not a single live voice could be heard. Even groups who used to (almost) always sing live are getting louder and louder backup tracks to the point where you can barely hear them anymore. I really hope that once live audiences return this trend wil be reversed again.

They can sing live, it's just that SM are more focus on this SMP type of thing for their artists. They are more focus on the camera productivity and dance performance. It is disappointing, but please let us not be engage to some of these hatred toward the SM artists. I've been an SM stan for almost 10 years, and I know that SM artists are all capable. They are more than that.
And also aespa have a lot of vocal parts and high notes and it hard to do them while dancing.

It's always funny to me when they are doing those facial expressions while singing high notes like they really sing it lmao But I don't get why SM doesn't let them sing live. Then they have to prove for 1 performance that they can sing live and then back to lipsync like... what's the point? I don't like the way SM is going with those pre-recorded vocals, I don't want live singing to be dead in kpop. They really want to make robots as idols or what?

@@aywa3007 I felt like the whole SMTOWN concert was a one big lipsync and I don't understand it, because I know that those artists CAN sing. It seems to me that they want to make that 'perfect avatar-robotic vocals' for aespa to match their concept but it's weird to me. They are self-sabotaging themselfs, because then fans will say that SM artists can't sing.

Not just aespa, I feel like this is becoming more and more used in the K-pop industry nowadays. Remember, this is their jobs and they should know how to sing live whilst dancing because it's getting ridiculous atp. Even if their voice is shaky whilst dancing that's completely fine cuz that's normal, it shows they're putting effort in their performances making fans more excited. However even fans themselves just let it slide and praise them for everything, which is getting really annoying. Companies should really let idols sing live because then we can actually praise them for their vocals on stages.
I heard a theory that sm doesn't let their artist sing live anymore so that more people would pay to go to their concerts to hear them live. Its a horrible strategy for aespa because they are new and people will judge them for everything especially their vocals.

Yeah you can obviously hear the shakiness and the voices when they do certain moves of choreographies where they have to jump or get on the ground,
The thing is you dont have to go thru too much analysis. Just look at their facial expressions and mouth movement while performing and you can tell right away if it is lipsync or not.

I love aespa, but this really butts me. They never really sang live. I really want to hear them sing live. They are music artists, they're supposed to give more importance in singing than the dance. i hope SM let's them sing live, they have incredible voices.
this isn't really a comment about aespa but dude, i love the fact that when you showed a clip of them singing, you let them finish the verse they were singing. i know its not a big deal but so many kpop channels use clips and then just cut the verse off midway and it drives me nuts

They stopped trying because SM doesn't let them sing live. That's why they lipsync poorly and it's so obvious. Each girl has the predebut videos to backup their singing but they never get the chance to show it off.
It's like a painter always showing off one work because his art teacher says nothing else will sell but pretending to draw it each time, he knows he can paint but always told the same pose, same strokes, same colors. No room for creativity. So he smiles less as he shows off his art. People wonder why he looks so sad because he makes an amazing, true to picture piece everytime.. . So he stays depressed and stuck in that bubble.. stops caring and people critique his art...

I think it all boils down to them being not prepared enough to debut in the first place, sm lays so much emphasis that they give the whole package (Dancing with stage presence) that singing live becomes less important

I feel like this is the reason I find their performances quite boring because there’s nothing new each time they perform. The only difference is their outfits, everything else is the same, the backtrack, the robotic facial expressions, the same choreo. I noticed immediately from their debut that they sang with prerecorded vocals and it was weird seeing comments like “best 4th gen vocalists” or like “they eat CD’s for breakfast” when there are other kpop idols who work their asses off to sing live and don’t have big 3 privilege. I get this is all SM’s work, but it’s very disappointing to see.
The fact that aespa have the talent to sing really well while performing live but sm just makes them lipsync is so sad
pre recording usually happpens before every show at the venue so it’s different for each performance. they’re still singing live just not while also dancing. for most artists. but aespa’s pre recording as so much autotune that it doesn’t even sound live. a place that i find you call always find live vocals are in concerts, especially if people are paying to see them. you’re not paying to see something pre recorded you’re paying to see something live. from the groups that i follow i find thats always the case
We're so used to perfection at this point, that if idols sang live and went flat or sharp just a little (which new flash: is bound to happen when you're dancing like they are) , they'd be ruined.

It's pretty amazing how many people don't know what live singing/performance sounds like.
You can get up and do any bit of choreo you can think of and try to sing as you go. No matter how talented you are, you're gonna be breathy in spots at the very least.
They get hate if they’re not perfect, hate if they have a voice crack, hate if they don’t have amazing stamina, people saying they shouldn’t be idols if they aren’t exceedingly stable on stage while dancing and singing, hate if they don’t sound like they ate the CD. I’m not surprised companies and even idols probably want to avoid that by just not singing live. It’s simply not worth it. The mental stress it causes for them is just too much. Not shocked they don’t sing live and honestly I don’t really care that much. I think singing live is great if you want to do it and if you can do it but if you can’t then that’s fine too.
I feel like people put so much unnecessary emphasis on “singing live” and all that does is add pressure to be perfect.
I hope SM allows them to sing live as I'm sure they will kill it.

Love Aespa but singing “live” with auto tune feels like an oxymoron.
I feel like there should be two types of performances: one for dancing and one for vocals. That way people that want a better visual performance and those that want a better vocal performance are both happy.
Also, dances shouldn’t majorly effect an idol’s ability to sing. Why have them jump around when they’re supposed to sing?

At least they sang their encores without backing track. Wendy proofed once again that she can hit the high notes at the end without much trouble. SM just probably had another stroke 2 years ago, that made him think, that they have to lipsynch now all of a sudden.

I realized Kpop changed alot over the years. I remember in 2014 the emphasis was on performance and singing but the choreo was just to fill the stage and to provide a visual eye - catching factor as well. Nowadays the choreography is way too important. Seeing idols sing with passion and emotions is really rare nowadays.
Idols pre record their live singing in the studio of the music show they’re performing!! It depends on the music show too if they want artists to sing live with or without backing tracks. also you need to remember that music shows want to give the best show for high ratings or else how they going to profit!

As Stray Kids Bangchan said, idols have to pre-record their songs because all they do is work. They have to practice all day, sleep late, and wake up early for dry rehearsals and their performances.

It’s just not realistic to effortlessly singing while doing this kind of choreography, even when your singing and walking your voice usually shakes a little. SM should let them sing, it looks like even Aespa is kind of bored of lip syncing all the time just like their fans. It’s okay to Lip Sync but not all the time to give singers a break, but SM is ruining their credibility that they’re singers but haven’t sang live once.
They are definitely bored, imagine training and being a good singer only to end up lipsynching.

I think this is a systemic problem in the Kpop world. We have so many singing tv shows, even singing competition use those post-edited vocals that had a bunch of smoothing effects and pitch-correction. It makes "good live singing" an incredibly high standard. And considering how certain groups have been bashed for not having good live singing during encores, I kinda get why SM doesn't want to risk aespa's "AI-perfect" image and let them show less-than-perfect live singing. And it's a freakin' cruel world. If they lipsync, people bash them for being deceitful, but if they do, people'd probably bash them for being out of breath. It's mental how toxic it can be.
I just hope that they sing live next time cuz I wanna listen to their actual live voices.

I think the issue is that people know it is hard, but other groups manage to do it. If you notice in the choreo, whenever Winter or NingNing have a high note, their choreo is standing there and hitting the note. It obviously would take practice, as 3 minutes of dancing would make you tired and out of breath, but it's for sure something they can work towards. It would also probably help to give them songs in a more reasonable vocal range instead of making them have high notes in every comeback song.

they do have 100% live encore stage but you just choose the one that is not, Inkigayo always have non 100% live for their encores recently, not only aespa..
SM Idols used to use prerecorded audio the first two weeks for promotion and then sing live after that. But ever since the pandemic it seems like they want everyone to lip sync, aespa included. At least other SM idols get to sing live on radio or other things like that but SM hasn't given Aespa the chance. I'm not sure why they keep doing this because it's pretty obvious the idols want to sing. I think it helps them put more energy into their songs and enjoy the song more when its live so I don't blame them. Hopefully they change it once live audiences become a thing again.

This is why I am always looking forward to the encores. It is the only time I can see these idols sing live, because let's face it executing those choreos while singing is damn near impossible. I was so impressed by fromis_9 DM encore, when one of their did the whistle note love.

Bang Chan pointed out that they do prerecorded vocals sometimes to prevent straining when schedules are packed and they don't get to rest well in between. I love Æspa's vocals but I want to hear them sing and perform live for once, and not just on encore stages.
