MVP voting since Trout era is mainly based on WAR (exception being when Miggy had triple crown). Ohtani has very big advantage on this if he is able to pitch above average for next 4-5 years and get like 4-5 war from pitching, MVP is his to lose since his batting generates about 6-7 war a year.

Yeah seriously. How far are you getting with that ball. And - chris here - I also wondered if the balls were marked. After you leave, how does the team know you still have the ball??
I got into card collecting a few years ago because of Shohei, so I didn’t realize how much card values could fluctuate. From my perspective, his success has attracted many new collectors. these newcomers including myself, unlike longtime collectors, often aren’t familiar with the true value of cards, which leads to some of his cards selling for prices that many collectors find surprising or unacceptable. I bought a bowman chrome blue "pitching"auto for $1800 about 3 years ago and thought I paid a lot at the time, but now I’m kicking myself for not buying more!
SELL... 2019 Naitonal convention I bought 4 PSA 9s 2018 Bowman Ohtani for $15 all together! Sold one for $80, 100, 120 and 140! Just checked and card is selling for $40! And I sold two years ago! So Ohtani prices are actually going down over last few years despite his performance. Card prices are not based on performance. 99.9% of ALL cards go down in value.
I am dying to buy an ohtani rookie card but I keep telling myself the current prices won’t be worth it, unless it’s for a bowman chrome or TC card. The other sets are tough for me to justify because there’s just so many.
@@SpitballinCards the 2024 pristine topps. My thinking is dodger first year cards will be valuable. ESP superfractors. Only 6.3k. But if he’s Jordan and Brady level it is easily a 25k card.
Great job as usual gentlemen! To weigh in, I don’t see another current player who has the power/speed dynamic, as does Sho. Acuna isn’t getting faster, and I don’t see 50 hr’s from him. Ohtani looks to be this decades Trout. I hold and am now selling a lot of Ohtani personally. The thing I find so awesome is who Ohtani is…he’s a great guy and a global ambassador. Who else do we have that can carry that flame? Thx again!!
I had offers for my BGS 9.5/10 Ohtani blue chrome batting refractor at Burbank for 18000 and 18500...I declined looking for 20k....looking back, I guess it was a good decision and it might just end up on my vault from this point on, and just enjoy the ride....Picked it up in 2021 so nothing but gravy since then....
What a card!! Did you have it at Trade Night? Chris here - we may have talked! We ended up with a bgs 9 blue auto and its locked away in our vault and we have no plans to move it. You must be sitting on a lot of unrealized profit after buying in 2021. I know that's tempting to cash in...
@@SpitballinCards yea I had it at trade night. I remember that trade is when he hit the grand slam to got 40/40 …I really didn’t see that many available at Burbank…you would figure in LA there would be a few…I have a feeling people are starting to put them away for good.
Hello Guys, for Shoehi Otani cards this is what I would do sell lower end cards,Autograph Cards if you have several sell the lower/Mid- Range Cards and Keep the Higher End for the End of his Career ,he will be a World Series Winner before he Retires Engagement Ring then work for it,Thanks for this Series.
Is this season better than Acuna's 40/70? I know Acuna's injuries really hinder his collectability but the hype on this season for Ohtani seems like it is far greater than the Acuna season
Even if the Dodgers got swept this year, I think most people thought that this was going to be his worst overall Dodger season, considering him not pitching and not counting those backend of the 10 year contract years. Seems predictable that they will be higher going into next year as people will say "hey did you know the guy who did 50/50 also pitches?". Now, he could do poorly on either (or both) sides of the ball next year and then the prices may go down, or he could continue to do what he was doing from 2021-2023 and then some (playoffs, WS, etc.). But even if he were to get injured and never pitch again, now people are excited at him trying to go for 60/60 lol. This is probably the only example of a player in the hobby where his value actually grows over the next five years.
Ohtani cards will go down in the future. Here is why. 1. He is 30 years old now. He is on the peak of playing career. 2. If he pitches again next year, his hitting will not come close to this year. Maybe 40 home runs and 30 to 35 stolen bases at best. 3. Look at all the Japanese players came to this league in the past, most of them peak at around 4 to 7 years of playing and then fade out. 4. His pitching is above average, not the best elite pitcher. 5. He could have another surgery in the near future. Injury prone on his arms.
I may not know whether ohtani prices will rise or fall near term since I dont collect sports cards. But if it means anything, even I (a non-collector) own a few ohtani cards. Thats the kind of pull he has. Transcendant. Iconic. Stopped watching baseball after steroid scandal and started watching again in 2018 when he debuted.
I could see his cards going higher, but at some point dipping below now, considering the hype of the first ever 50/50. Not a great time to buy now imo. Good time to sell now, depending when you bought in.
I wouldn’t do FOMO buy because that’s my investment style. Ohtani cards will most likely go up in value excluding injury or another gambling scandal. However the trajectory of his cards increase will slow. There will be corrections along the way but the challenge is when will his cards drop? After a huge run up? You may pay more than compared to today. That’s what makes this exciting but not for me to play.
I've got about 80 rookie PSA 10 rookies. Top end are the Topps Chrome rookies. I'd like to get a pink chrome rookie maybe get an auto at some time. I'm not as much of a baller as you guys. I look at the future and think, how would it compare to a Jordan or Tom Brady?
Definitely wanted to get these guys podcast for this subject! I've been watching Blabbin Bout Slabbin a few episodes, but don't comment really. But when is Scottie B going dive into the Ohtani pool??! Lol. But wanted to let you guys know a PSA 10 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Orange Refractor Auto #'d/25 recently sold for.....$25,000+!! It was crazy and amazing watching that auction.
That Sapphire auto is such a beautiful card!! Chris here - I think I actually like the base auto better. The blue really looks incredible. Thanks for watching Blabbin' too!!
Ohtani is great. But guys, wake up. His prices are definitely going to be lower one day. I have no idea when (could be years). But once you peak physically and your stats start falling, it is a disaster for card prices. People forget about you did in the heart of career and prices fall. Happens to everyone. There will be some other guy belting 50 HRs, wowing people like crazy and Ohtani will be hitting 12 home runs and no one will be dumping money into his cards. Lots of other questions about Ohtani: Do these prices sustain if he isn't the same as a pitcher?
Do a show about the new 2024 topps update checklist. I wish they would stop pairing ohtani on cards with trout like the new combo card. I think trout being on the card with him brings down the value now. The ohtani trout cards when they both played for the angels made sense, but not now
Shohei is the best thing that has ever happened to the baseball hobby. At one point I had a plastic tub full of base rookies from pretty much every licensed release. Half of them I pulled and the other half I bought in 2019 when you could get his Topps Chrome base rookies for $3 on comc and every other base rookie for less than $2..Sadly I never hit anything big of his in 2018 despite opening a lot of wax. It's now all gone other than a few base rookies that are parts of sets. His 2018 Bowman Chrome Superfractor auto must be the closest thing to a 52 Mantle in PSA10. Brady Singer...INVEST!!!!!!
You guys never mention any of Shohei's PRCs from his NPB days in Japan. So much amazing stuff. Unique, lower-than-USA-companies' print run, of older vintage. What's not to covet?
Chris here - I don't know much about those cards. In my mind they're like the US Non-licensed cards. Maybe they'll be as popular or even more popular but I try to stick to what I know or understand or think I know and understand.
@@SpitballinCards They are worth, IMO, an investigation if you are an Ohtani collector/ investor. Some truly amazing stuff from BBM, Calbee & Owner's League to name a few.
@@moronsaltable That's some solid value, in my opinion. I don't have the bankroll to play in the deep end of the high-end pool, but I really dig Shohei's Nippon-Ham cards and think there's short-term and long-term plays to be made there.
When it comes to Ohtani cards especially big Ohtani cards either you are going to keep them for the next 10-50 years and hope they 50x, or else sell them when there is some hype like now. Barring a Wander type situation, I don't see any scenarios where his cards fluctuate down much, so selling FOMO really shouldn't be a concern short term. Obviously there are differences, but there are 1,605 graded copies of Mickey Mantles 1952 Topps card just at PSA. Are we really concerned that a few hundred Bowman Rc autos is to many for Shohei's market to sustain.
What if ohtani decides... Let's win a cy young next year! And he put all his effort to focus mainly on pitching... His card value is gonna go thru the moon.. Or maybe the next solar system
Missed the Shohei boat. I'm all in on Riley Greene and the Detroit Tigers. I sold everything I owned - including my beloved chip fryer and most of my clothes - and plonked it on the tiggers to salute at 70-1. Go you good thing!!!!!
That’s what they said about Trout 5 years ago. Can’t miss perennial mvp blah blah blah. He hasn’t won a World Series. Non of the modern stuff is rare. FOMO is real. See how Ohtani’s values are when he blows out his arm pitching. He’s also 31. How many good years does he have left. Wake up people.
I collect game-used baseballs and I understand the market pretty well, and I am here to tell you that if Ohtani doesn't reach 60/60, that ball will be worth north of 2 million.
i am waiting until the end of next year after he has had a mediocre pitching season and 35 home runs. the hobby crowd is fickle as hell and everyone will proclaim from the mountain tops he is washed up, lol. there were guys bad mouthing vladdy this year during a slight slump 😂😅. not pointing fingers
Is there a ceiling (outside of a generalized expanded collector base) to a modern player before it approaches Babe Ruth “store of value” status? Long term, I would want to try to envision where Ohtani stands against the greats, and also how his huge supply of cards in great condition would work against him. Looking at the 90s, the highest value cards come from sets: PMG, credentials, 1st GU jersey set, etc. Not necessarily rookie cards.
Can his prices go higher....definitely. Postseason in Dodger blue will enhance his legacy. I think that where a player can become a legend in the hobby....with postseason success.
Jeff here: probably a lot. but he was reallllly inefficient. He made 42 outs on the basepaths in one season! FORTY-TWO! The better question might be, "How many steals would Rickey get if he were as efficient as Ohtani?" Prob 150+
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin Penalizing him for inefficiency is essentially penalizing him for the era in which he played. Not to mention he grew up a multi-sport athlete who was actually better at football but went into baseball per his mother's advice because baseball players have longer careers. Whereas, Ohtani has been dead focused on baseball since he was a little kid. He also has an entire analytics team at his disposal, ipads in the dugout, etc. He probably doesn't even sneeze if the analytics say it's not an efficient decision. Of course he'll be more efficient. He lives and plays in a more efficient era. Rickey played on overwhelming natural ability and instincts. He got on base with no one in front of him, he was running. Period. There was no squad of number crunchers to tell him it wasn't efficient. When Rickey played, WAR was a bad thing. I mean, it still is. But you get what I mean. Penalizing him for not being efficient just seems unfair. He was just a human being playing a game. Not an automaton making calculated moves based on the data provided by his team of analysts. End of day. Both players are incredible. I just don't think it's fair to compare them based on efficiency when Rickey didn't have 1/100,000,000th of the analytical information at his disposal that Ohtani has.
I 'd love to see Ohtani in the bullpen going forward..... 15-20 pitches max.... 3 days a week ~ Possible Cy young as a reliever his 1st .... Much easier to hit as a reliever IMO......the theatre of him coming out of the bullpen would be palpable. Every save would be a freagin' block party.
Would love your thoughts on Ohtani 1st year Dodger cards and the potential value there. Could those exceed the value of his 2nd or 3rd year cards as an Angel?
I could see that - very easily. Except the autos. I have a feeling that Ohtanis original signature autos will hold a premium over his newer signature. Just opinion.

I just picked up a 2023 Topps Shohei Ohtani Black and White with background color # to /49. And I'm holding.
beauty!
It's time to SELL his cards. Remember Mike Trout?
Who??
JK
Ohtan is in SO MANY SETS in 2018. He's got an ocean of rookie cards. Got to be picky about where we put our money.
I bought another Ohtani superfractor. He’s Jordan Brady level. These cards will be worth 100k.
WHOA!! Which one??
@@SpitballinCards the 2024 pristine topps. My thinking is dodger first year cards will be valuable. ESP superfractors. Only 6.3k. But if he’s Jordan and Brady level it is easily a 25k card.
@@SpitballinCards I actually did a max bid of 12k. Ohtani collectors are nuts.
That’s the thing there are buyers willing to overpay.
💯
Consider this baseball is ve re y popular in japan 😊
Yes it is!!
Thx again!!
Everything about him makes it so difficult to sell!! and so easy to buy
Jeff here: I wonder if that's one we saw at trade night? Good call holding onto it, I'd say! Great work getting in so early!
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin actually I think so!
@@SpitballinCards yea I had it at trade night. I remember that trade is when he hit the grand slam to got 40/40 …I really didn’t see that many available at Burbank…you would figure in LA there would be a few…I have a feeling people are starting to put them away for good.
I think the pitching images will go up once he pitches again
Very possible! There will also likely be fewer pitching image cards produced going foward. What does that mean? No idea.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Is this season better than Acuna's 40/70? I know Acuna's injuries really hinder his collectability but the hype on this season for Ohtani seems like it is far greater than the Acuna season
Great question! Chris here, even as a braves fan I can say that I think Ohtani's season is better. Slightly...
Goatani.
💯💯
Ohtani cards will go down in the future. Here is why. 1. He is 30 years old now. He is on the peak of playing career. 2. If he pitches again next year, his hitting will not come close to this year. Maybe 40 home runs and 30 to 35 stolen bases at best. 3. Look at all the Japanese players came to this league in the past, most of them peak at around 4 to 7 years of playing and then fade out. 4. His pitching is above average, not the best elite pitcher. 5. He could have another surgery in the near future. Injury prone on his arms.
Na mlb wants him to be the new goat of baseball, if u look at the same games played yo babe Ruth they similar, all scripted.
Now should also be a great time to pick up some cards for my PC since most of the investors and flippers are using their revenue on Ohtani.
Lots of other players for sure flying in Ohtani's shadow right now
I may not know whether ohtani prices will rise or fall near term since I dont collect sports cards. But if it means anything, even I (a non-collector) own a few ohtani cards. Thats the kind of pull he has. Transcendant. Iconic. Stopped watching baseball after steroid scandal and started watching again in 2018 when he debuted.
If you dont have ohtani now you're cooked lol
😆😆😆
Very fun discussion, buying now would be buying the hype, I have some low end rookies from 2018
I could see his cards going higher, but at some point dipping below now, considering the hype of the first ever 50/50. Not a great time to buy now imo. Good time to sell now, depending when you bought in.
Lots of hype right now for sure
Shohei makes more than 300k per game. Dodgers could have offered more.
TRUE
Sell ohtani, buy engagement ring????? WTH. Sell ohtani and buy Ruth and Wagner. Tell her to suck it up.
Mets wining this series and will have a run in the playoffs, will change the scope of the division for the next decade
Not impossible. Getting ready to make a splash in Free Agency this winter!
Mets are on fire!
Do you mean base topps chrome PSA 10's? If that's the case, I'd be looking to liquidate them and buy an auto!
Its amazing to think that Ohtani has around 224 career home runs at age 31 while Soto has 200 at age 25. Congrats though to Ohtani and 50-50
Soto: 🍻
Shohei has played less mlb games though. Could you imagine if he came right out of highschool?
Soto hitting in front of judge. Nobody hits in front on Ohtani.
Yes. If ohtani pitches next year prices through the roof especially if he has good postseason
Ohtani just turned 30 in July!!!
and Soto can't pitch!
I saw that. High PSA 10 pop (9 I think) and at least one of the corners looked banged up!
Jeff here: We've been trying to get Scottie to jump in! Thanks for watching the Blabbin' channel, and feel free to comment there anytime you want!
Thank god Zach Hample didnt get it...id hate him soooooo much more than i already do.
I saw him catch Judge's 56th HR today while watching the game..ugh
@@jacobgoudreault6680 noooooooooooooo
The ohtani trout cards when they both played for the angels made sense, but not now
That's for next week- we weren't collectively ready to tackle that one!
@@Philmington thanks I look forward to that discussion
Do u know how much a 2013 BBM rookie edition sells for? I see one on ebay for $3,600 bit it's obo and packs are $220
@@moronsaltable That's some solid value, in my opinion. I don't have the bankroll to play in the deep end of the high-end pool, but I really dig Shohei's Nippon-Ham cards and think there's short-term and long-term plays to be made there.
@familyberliner6254 I have a box that I might sell at the end of the year, do you know a good place to sell?
I have a friend who sold early Apple Stock to pay for his wife’s engagement ring. It’s a *good* story I guess?
😬😬😬😬😬
Ouch.
I can see similarities with people that think now is the time to buy Ohtani cards,
and people that think now is the time to buy Apple stock
When it comes to Ohtani cards especially big Ohtani cards either you are going to keep them for the next 10-50 years and hope they 50x, or else sell them when there is some hype like now.
Barring a Wander type situation, I don't see any scenarios where his cards fluctuate down much, so selling FOMO really shouldn't be a concern short term.
Obviously there are differences, but there are 1,605 graded copies of Mickey Mantles 1952 Topps card just at PSA. Are we really concerned that a few hundred Bowman Rc autos is to many for Shohei's market to sustain.
Great point! I think a "wander-type" situation would break MLB. It would definitely break me.
Jeff here: Agree with this take. And just praying that there isn't a Wander-type situation. Thanks for watching!
The time to buy his cards was about 5-6 years ago
winter of 2020/2021 for sure!!
What if ohtani decides... Let's win a cy young next year! And he put all his effort to focus mainly on pitching... His card value is gonna go thru the moon.. Or maybe the next solar system
Jeff here: Sure seems as though he would be able to do anything he set his mind to. It's extraordinary.
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin and 2-3 years later.. Why not play outfield and win a gold glove.. Why not win all the possible award there is?
Missed the Shohei boat. I'm all in on Riley Greene and the Detroit Tigers. I sold everything I owned - including my beloved chip fryer and most of my clothes - and plonked it on the tiggers to salute at 70-1. Go you good thing!!!!!
TIgers are on FIRE!!
I collect game-used baseballs and I understand the market pretty well, and I am here to tell you that if Ohtani doesn't reach 60/60, that ball will be worth north of 2 million.
i am waiting until the end of next year after he has had a mediocre pitching season and 35 home runs. the hobby crowd is fickle as hell and everyone will proclaim from the mountain tops he is washed up, lol. there were guys bad mouthing vladdy this year during a slight slump 😂😅. not pointing fingers
hahaha - chris here, and I'm fairly confident my proclamation that I was OUT on Vlad jr spurred him into greatness!! HOF bound for sure now
@SpitballinCards 😅🤣 i didnt mean to make it so obvious who i was talking about. um, yes i did, lol. i love this hobby
I want my plastic tub full of rookie cards back!!!! Take me back to late 2020 when he looked a hobby bust.
True, but most of those 90s players have rookies in hugely overprinted sets with no parallels or autos
1 caught steal wipes out 2 steals.
Yeah, efficiency is big. That makes Rickey not seem so impressive!
FINALLY a lineup with some substance.
Can his prices go higher....definitely. Postseason in Dodger blue will enhance his legacy. I think that where a player can become a legend in the hobby....with postseason success.
Bowman pitching auto is the best looking version of his autograph.
I like the image too
How many steals does Rickey get with the bigger bases and pitchers not being able to throw over as much?
Mr. Ohtani is not a New York Yankee, so not for me! I have no FOMO whatsoever. GOOOOO Miami 'Canes! ☀🌴🌊 🏈.

He may get there as he ages, but he definitely wants to start and the Dodgers are inclined to let him do what he wants. At least for a while.
Save your money because what goes up will come down. Plus he should be busted for the gambling incident

Have you guys seen Shohei Ohtani: Beyond the Dream on ESPN? It's amazing!
Now that the hobby loves unlicensed numbered rated rookies are still cheap
If you catch that ball, the play is to give it to a kid. I’d way rather pass up on $300K than get booed by strangers.
Chris here - you can boo me into oblivion for $300k!!
Giving it to a kid is nuts. They can have foul balls all day. Home runs in general are different. League milestones? Come off it.
Knew there would be at least one who didn’t realize the sarcasm. But that’s the risk I chose to take.
How cool would a pitching card of Babe Ruth
So pitching ohtani could be hard to have later in his career

Cheaper at some point Scott? If he wins a WS or even multiple with Dodgers that will never happen dude.
It's a tough call. He may spend a few weeks on IL in his 30's but how much will he have accomplished before then???
