    So you are to these alpacas kind of like what farriers are to horses. How marvelous that you do so much for these critters! Such concern for their well being and comfort! Thanks for sharing. ❤️

    I think you two ladies are amazing. So kind and caring whilst making animals feel so much better with your incredible skills. Thank you for what you do for animals especially those that are suffocating in their own wool . 🎉

      Every shearing is a little surprising to me. When I was a kid we loved to hold the shearers' hands bc they were soft and smooth. Katy, where are you and Devon from?

    I actually have sheared sheep. approx 50 yr ago. 2 days/ I think 200 sheep/ three of us. I had never before/ never since.( not sure about the other two's exp.) But I did give an honest try @ learning. Learned enough to RESPECT YOU BIG TIME!! I/ sheep worked well, I got the "set on butt, leanem back" rock side to to side, roll'em, and zip the spine last. No prob. I also learned how easy it is to "nick", and why sharp shears is a MUST!! Hat's off to you!! The sheep(llamas, alpacas, etc) are in GOOD HANDS!!

    I wanna know the process after trimming those wool/fur. Like how they process it and make something out of it. It will be more satisfying then

    • @tiltingplanet2869
      @tiltingplanet2869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I can sort of answer this, the process for rabbit wool processing is sort of similar but on a smaller scale! I have an angora rabbit and a netherland dwarf (they are bonded). Becuase my angora is spayed all her energy goes to wool production. I keep her sanitary areas and chest clipped for cleanliness reasons but once a year I sheer her blanket. I then wash the wool by hand in a plastic tub (the fibers are bad for plumbing), put it in a mesh nylon bag and put it in a salad spinner to try and shake all the water out before sun drying it. Then I go through the process of carding where I make all the fibers lay one way. I usually then dye it and then use a tool called a drop spindle to spin it into yarn. It's a really painstaking process and I went through it just to test it bout but my one rabbit doesn't really produce enough fur to justify it.

      I agree. I don't k ow what they do but there are other videos of home far.ers processing wool at home. I agree with you I'd like to see what's done with this wool.

    • @juliap7242
      @juliap7242 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want to be careful about washing/drying, because that can cause matting, but wash in a basin outside (birds love wool for nests), dry in the sun, comb (card), dye (optional) and ready to use!

    • @SallyGreimes
      @SallyGreimes ปีที่แล้ว

      Judy Johnson, alpaca fiber is incredibly warm! Super light, fine, and not knitted anything like sheep wool. The advantage is it has no lanolin like sheep or goat wool do. I break out in hives from sheep or (angora) goat due to the lanolin. For people who need ultra light, fine clothes alpaca and llama suit the bill. If you watch Katie shearing alpaca or llama, you can see what she calls "crimp" in the tracks.
      I learned so much from talking to people at the Washington Evergreen Fair some years back. At a table were samples and apparel knitted from the various wools and fibers. I was amazed! The lady said cross country skiers, extreme hikers, and long distance cyclists bought everything her flock produces.
      Paid to be a snoop that day.

    Lolz I have no idea how I stumbled upon your channel. This is the first time I have seen such exotic animals like llamas/alpacas/sheep (we don't have such animals in my country) being sheared.
    You're entertaining too,Katie. You and the animals make me laugh.
    Is it true that llamas spit at people?
    I wonder what's the difference between a llama and an alpaca. They look the same to me.
    Goats and sheep look so different but both produce mutton. Yet they both don't produce wool. While goats smell from 100m away I wonder if sheep smell too.
    Anyway,I had a lot of fun watching. Thank you.
