      It'd be cool to see a bullet test where you shoot the side of a weapon instead of trying to cut it in half. It would probably only be possible on a bulky weapon but I feel like that'd be a more realistic scenario since aiming to slice a bullet would be extremely hard.

    Rich made an extremely impressive katana w/out a auto hammer or other fancy machines. Forged by hand w/ a simple quench tank & even after his first blade cracked. It cut cleanly, survived pushing through armor, & it's bullet proof! He should not be ashamed of his work. Between his & Matt's sword it had to come down to the finest of details!

    • @mrkiky
      @mrkiky 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He definitely messed up by trying to make a differentially hardened blade and quench it in water. Given that he was using modern steel and that his sword was gonna be used in some strength test, he should've forgone the differential hardening and just quench it in oil. Could've spent more time on the construction to make it nicer and maybe would have won.

    Both swords were very well forged and were equal in blade quality. But, to be honest, the winner's sword made the better impression visually. However, I don't want to call the two swords "katana" because an original katana has a blade made of multi-folded steel with different properties of each blade component in terms of blade hardness and blade flexibility.
    It’s nearly impossible to forge such a blade during only five days.

    • @thetoneknob4493

    • @charlieflight6124
      @charlieflight6124 2 ปีที่แล้ว +315

      The multi folded technique is the Traditional way to make katanas since metals at the time weren't the same quality we have today. So they multi folded it to spread out impurities evenly in the blade so it wouldn't snap if tapped at a specific spot.
      Most modern made katanas are forged like how they did here. Because modern metals are way stronger and have little to no impurities when compared to the samurai era.

    • @franalbertgarcia8601

      in fact traditional katanas were made with 2 different types of steel. soft steel core (Shigane, low carbon rate) and a hard steel casing (Hagane, higher carbon rate). Tamahagane steel is obtained by heating (for three days) in a furnace between 1200 ° C and 1500 ° C. That kill test... The katana was generally not used on the battlefield where the enemy was likely to be armored. If anything it was a backup weapon in those conditions, with a spear being the main weapon. Compared to axes and maces for example, swords are inferior against armor but they are more suited for parrying/blocking. That makes swords more versatile weapons and thus a superior choice to carry for self-defense. In other words, an unarmored test dummy would've been more realistic for testing the lethality of a katana.

    the curve of a katana is achieved in a process called differential hardening and it ensures that the edge of the blade is as hard as possible while the rest of the blade is soft. differential hardening uses a thin layer of clay on the edge and a thick layer on the rest of the blade the thin layer of clay allows the edge of the katana to cool down and contract faster than the rest of the blade creating an even curve. The weapons made in this video (while effective) are more of a chokuto which is basically a straight katana.

    One thing everyone always gets wrong about folding steel is you are not folding steel into stronger steel the folding process was born to create steel from iron and what it did is it would squeeze the impurities out of the iron and the process would forge a rudimentary steel but if the problem of too many folds came about it would revert the steel back into iron because of the carbon being squeezed out as well and the fold technique in the modern era is completely useless as melting down and forging steel is much more efficient and produces a much higher grade of steel

    Sorry if I will trigger anyone, but in my opinion, the blades both lacked in one major thing: The Curve. Both were extremely straight for a katana. The cut power comes from the curve. They should have put an ash-clay mixture on the outside back of the blade so that the quenching makes that the edge of the blade cools faster, thus expanding quicker, making the ICONIC curve.

    Something many people miss is that when you fold the steel it actually does add to the durability, you do this at least 15 to 20 Times , but legendary samurai had they're swords folded hundreds of times , another key factor is the core , if you cut a traditional katana in half theres a soft iron in the middle, this passes through vibrations (that cause breakage of the blade) to pass through ugh and makes the blade almost unbreakable

    This is the competition that has left me the most confused and that has seemed to me to be a joke. The loser's sword was better in all 3 tests. In the fish it cut cleanly, while the other one needed one more cut. In the test of death it could be a tie and in the test of the shot, it is clearly seen that in the winning sword there is a mark of the bullet and in the losing one there is no mark of the bullet.

  • @shaunbang

    Anybody that knows anything about katanas knows these guys didn’t make real Katanas but rather just a sword that looks like one. Real katanas should be made with steel folded over and over again to create micro layers that strengthen the Steel but also gives the steel a softness that allows it to be just perfectly flexible for impacts. These swords were literally just steel blocks shaped into a katana style blade.

    • @MarcsonMotoPH
      @MarcsonMotoPH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. I watched documentaries on how real katana sword were made in japan its more complicated. The katana swords shown here in this show were not real katana rather they were cloned. They were not made in the exact process.

GOOD QUALITE HERMITE WASNT AVAILABLE TO JAPAN BACK THEN, SO THEY FOLDED THE IRON TO SPREAD THE IMPURITE( ur micro fold is talking about impurity spread) AS JAPAN IS ACRIPELIGO.
