In Italy, we neutralize the ghosting by packing the pipe with some rubbed leaf of kentucky cigar (the "Toscano"). The smoke is strong, but the method works and it's quick.
Bradley! Ouch. In the Daughters and Ryan London Dock, there was a cherry or cherry-like aromatic that would not go away. The pipe I used was an old cob, so there was no loss in throwing it out, which I did. As for the "nuclear option," Isopropyl alcohol is not a good choice. Rubbing alcohol is tainted with something to make it non-potable. Get yourself some Everclear. It is safe to consume, properly diluted, and has no alcohol smell. It is 99% pure ethanol, so it evaporates while you watch! Back in the day, Joe Zieve at Smokers' Haven used to sell a "proprietary " pipe cleaning liquid in little medicine bottles. Great stuff. Then he stopped. Turns out, the revenuers done came and told him he was re-selling untaxed liquor. His magic formula was pure, potable ethanol. Anyway, alcohol alone will not do the job most of the time. You need the salt to draw it out. Good luck! Great show today.
Everclear is not 99% ethanol, it is 95% ethanol. Yes the alcohol evaporates quickly, and is safer than Propynol (Isopropyl alcohol), but it will leave a trace of water that you'll need to dry out. In my opinion Propynol is actually a better solvent for removing ghosting, but I do use Everclear myself. Also - Bradley used 99% Propynol, which contains no additives (the other 1% being water). Rubbing alcohol is about 70% Propynol and contains other things, and you are absolutely right, it should never be used to clean out a pipe. 🙂
I’m mainly a meerschaum smoker but the routine for ghosted meerschaums is to run at least ten bowls of straight burley through it. Seems to get the ghosting out quite well
@@samuellefischer9596 i started with cobs and then got a couple briars i like but then went back to my cobs for most of my smokes because of the cool and dry smoke they produce. My question to you is, do meerschaums smoke even better than cobs? I am very interested in a getting myself a meerschaum. Thank you for any input.
I love using the salt/alcohol treatment on ghosted pipes. And even on all my pipes, about every three to five years, depending on how often I smoke a certain pipe. It gets rid of all the stuff that has saturated into the wood and the cake, and it makes it taste fresh again after such a treatment.
What ever you put in a wood pipe will end up in you. Even trace amounts of isopropyl can have neurotoxic effects. The flavour left by 151 proof rum is not really even noticeable after the first bowl. Personally I would have filled the bowl with course salt, and added a small amount of 151 for 1-2 hours, cleaned it normally and left it for a week to dry. This leaves my pipes in nearly new condition with a slightly sweet smell and I have been doing it this way for 15+ years with no issues (I used to smoke mostly tobacconist store blend aromatics, before I discovered escudo).
Bradley, I've had this happen to a pipe or two. I used 99% isopropanol then smoked a fairly strong non-aromatic in it. I just alternated between smoking the non-aromatic tobacco, cleaning the bowl with the alcohol, letting the pipe air and dry for a few days, then repeated this process. I had to go through the process maybe 5 or 6 times. Most, if not all, of the offending odor resides in the cake. And you probably didn't smoke the Captain Black long enough for it to penetrate deeply into the cake or the wood of the bowl. So, repeated cleaning and smoking, perhaps with a little reaming should salvage your pipe. This worked for my pipes, and if you continue doing as you described in this video, I think the Peterson will be alright. Keep at it, give it some time, and be patient! Regards, AT.
I know haunted bookshop is named after a book... But I have noticed it cleans out a cherry ghosting of a pipe pretty good. It got Cult BRM taste/smell out of my pipe pretty fast at least.
Good to know my friend. I will put this one in the back pocket and when needed, attempt it. It's a game for me to see how many pipes of tobacco I need to fill to get rid of ghosted pipes as I am a goopy aromatic smoker. I do enjoy as a cleaner, elizabethen mixture to test when cleaned. Lol
Hi Bradley, I use apple cider vinegar instead of ISO. I got the tip from a long term pipe smoker in a forum some time ago. It seems to work for remove ghosting. For a short time in a fresh bowl, after a clean, you will get the cider taste. But it goes very quickly thereafter. It might not work on some aromatics, but could be worth a try. Reaming +ISO might be the last resort.
I use Everclear 150 proof to clean my pipes. I have a pipe I smoked 1-Q in for a few months and everything I normally smoke is different in that pipe. Still good but I notice the difference.
I once had a pouch of Captain Black Grape, a bowl of which I smoked in a cob. The aroma of grape was so cloying, it seemed to ghost the cabinet where I kept my other tobaccos. The smell still lingered even after I tossed the pouch. The cob that I used to smoke the CB was really bad. I just threw it away.
I don't know if this would help, but I use vodka for getting smoke or other smells out of used books I buy. I would think it might work on your pipe, plus it's "edible." Good thing you didn't use your Dunhill!
Y use pipecleaners and not Q-Tips? In my experience they are far better to remove dirt and goop :) Apart from ghosted pipes: If my pipes don't taste fresh and I am not in the mood for real deep cleaning, I soak a regular pipecleaner in 100% Lemon juice, stick it in from mouth piece to bowl and let it sit over night - best taste you can get out of your pipe by far!
I got a ghosted estate Peterson and it’s not pleasant. Given two salt and alcohol baths, soaked stem in heavy solvent, not great. 😢 I can’t vent tell what kind of tobacco was smoked in it, but I don’t like it. My only option at this point is to try to overwhelm that ghosted flavoring with some other aromatic.
Made that mistake joining my father for a bowl of blood moon in one of my decent pipes. Followed your route pretty closely to cure the pipe of it's cherry sickness. Cheers ! -Scottem
Good video, but keep in mind isopropyl is extremely toxic. It does evaporate, and it's amazing for electronics and other surfaces, but it's still not food-safe. I'd stick with 95% ethanol (Everclear)
@@stuffandthingsyoutube have you ever been told to swish it in your mouth to get rid of a tooth infection? An open wound isn’t connected to your digestive system
@@ryangg1756- Neither is a wooden pipe. 99% isopropyl alcohol evaporates very quickly and meets OSHA requirements for the sanitation of food prep surfaces. Just let the pipe dry out, and you’ll be fine.
I can still taste the Captaiin Black! (...no shyte Sherlock!!!) What did you expect? That's why I use a cheapo pipe or a Falcon since the Falcons are really easy to deep clean, if I ever need to smoke an aromatic baccy!

Couldn't have answered it better myself!
Bradley: "I didn't really believe in ghosts until now..."
Howdy Bradley. Try everclear instead of the iso alcohol. It doesn’t impart any flavor like a dark liquor would. Recommendation I received years ago
I’m glad you didn’t need to go with the welding torch method. Thanks for taking one for the team with that CBC review.
Any time!
