Hi mr maillis just for you to know I’ve met lots of your friends like Mario karey and Ryan Myers and I love spearfishing I live in the Bahamas 🇧🇸 and I love your videos that’s how i got better at spearfishing
By far best pole spear video on TH-cam. Don’t wast time watching others….Luke is the pinnacle and the best teacher on technique and mastering this weapon! Thank you!
Wow! Hi from Philippines! Great video. Now I have an idea how to use pole spear & began liking to use it on my spearfishing. I'll try to make a home-made of it. 😅
Great video and advice...... However as a firearms Instructor I have to correct one thing..... When shooting a gun you focus on the front sight.... The front sight is clear and in focus and the rear sight and target are slightly out of focus....
Spear fishermen do not shoot by using sights even if some spear guns have sights. Fire arm shooter myself, spear fishing is more kwick instinct shooting than aiming. With some of the most powerful spear guns 4 Mts -12 Ft is way out yonder. I did my share of 5 mts hiting smal 2-4 Lbs spanish mackrel. And also missed some real nice 15 Lbs fish at close range. A life time of hunting and spear fishing
So sorry for the confusion, I should have specified that I was referring to shotguns as this is what we mainly use in the Bahamas. glad you enjoyed the video, thank you.
Wow I'm just getting into spearfishing and this is great. I would love to hear more on the "Knowing your prey" part. Also tips on Hawaiian slings which is what I will be starting with.
Most fish today are hunter smart at free diving deph. Unless very lucky or very dumb small fish ,get a double band spear gun. if close one rubber band if out yonder 2 bands. Will save you a lot of frustation
You want to attach the float line to the D ring on the band of a roller pole spear so that it does not cause drag. It is only the back end of the pole that travels. The D ring on the band where your hand is remains static.
Thank you great video. Side note, when shooting a firearm, you focus on the sights of the firearm, and the targets is blurry. That’s how you are supposed to do it, but I get your instructions. Thank you.
Do u ever accidentally let go of the whole thing and it goes flying? How far? Easy to lose? Like how important is it to always hold the rubber after you launch it
use a 2nd safety rope and you will never lose your equipment, even if it slips out of your hands, the 2nd rope attached to the signal buoy will make it easier to pull the equipment to you. 😊
This is great! As a sling guy, I would always get frustrated with the pole as I’d consistently miss fish I would otherwise land easily with the sling. Now I know why - I’ve been doing it all wrong.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Kye Clyde i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hi!! Really nice video!! I am really new in pole spearfishing and I would like to buy one! I want to catch big fish with that! U suggest me a 2 meter length) carbon, or aluminium?
super informative. i know nothing about using a spear, but, are you not takin a serious amount of potential out of the bunjee by 1/4 twisting it around the shaft? is that just for accuracy or to keep the speargun near your arm?
A 5ft will work but will be very difficult to spear anything as you have to get so close but also because when you draw back the pole, there is not much front end pointing out to aim with. the minimum should be at least 7ft
Thank you. I went pole fishing in Palau when I was 15 and now I'm 40. My boyfriend took me and had never fired one I definitely needed this refresher as I was holding it down beside me in the kayak. I need a video of this off a boat. In the islands we did it in water standing in water and off a motor boat. This will def help me bag an Asian carp that are invasive species here
I have a 7 ft polespear that I added another 2 ft length to. Would you grip it in the same spot as the 7ft and just increase the band length or grip it further back?
Great Vid. One thing about attaching the floatline to rear of spear. It is fine to do so as long as the user draws up the floatline with the band. Many big pelagics have been taken with polespears this way. Also with stiffer spears you don't need to impart a twist as they dont bend much at all.
Yes, you are correct in a way. You can't use a float line because of the amount of drag it creates, although we use what we call ''Shooting lines'' for pelagics and giant fish. the shooting line is 400lb to 600lb speactra or mono that attaches directly to the slip tip cable then passes through or over the back of the pole spear and leads up to the grip on the spear where you draw the pole to max power. like you said, as you draw the pole spear rubber, you also have that shooting line in your same hand. This has been our typical setup although we are planning to use rubbers with the shooting line inside of it instead. this helps to keep it simple and easy.
Yes that’s a method invented by Gat-ku. The lighter spears were becoming pretzeled and this breakaway set up with shooting line allowed lighter weight spears to be used on larger fish. I’ve tested 1/8” wall with 1/2”, 9/16”, 5/8” od rubber to see how much it could take. They all can handle any fish and have a floatline attached without breaking. That’s if it’s in good shape. I used to run a small line of spectra inside the band just incase the rubber broke. I went away from that once I tested how strong my bands were. You probably know this but watch the spear coming back at you if the fish makes a hard run and stretches your band. If it tears off, that spear is headed back at you. A couple methods, one with two hands spread the band apart this will lesson the rearward travel. If single handing it hold the spear away from your body as you don’t want it in your face. With roller spears they come back and slap your hand even during use. This gets old through the day because it only happens when your missing. I designed two big floppers that went over the front of the spear and they would open and slow down that rearward travel. Kinduv a gimmick but they worked. Best is to have a floatline attached and play the fish off that and if the fish does break off you’re not getting hit.
Best video on how to use a pole spear that I’ve seen
Definitely
Agreed
Yep, tremendous video.
No truer words
I agree - very helpful!
I´ve used a hand spear thousands of days during 50 years of diving, and developed a technique identical to what you describe here. Great job.
hi charles, love your video, what is the band size of polespear you recommend? what length? for 9 foot polespear (i got the evolve speed)

Where do we attach the flot line if it is a roller spear? I think attaching to the handle would slow down the veleocity.

Great tips, Luke! I started out shooting a gun but this year I'm trying to get dialed in with the pole spear! Gonna up my hunting skills😝

Hi, I found a 2 year old question.
If you don't twist the bungee when you are spearfishing, the pole spear can bend or break.
Where can I buy one of those?? Are they come in different sizes???
