@@LM-he7eb Ah, yes, a sport where you need both brains and brawn, which includes excellent balance, flexibility, endurance and strength is considered stupid to someone sitting behind a screen who probably never touched grass just because it consist of stones, a broom, and an ice rink. You can’t do it and you don’t know what it’s like to practice for hours and hours on end to hone your skill, so why don’t you just shut up?
The friction of sweeping generates a little bit of heat which melts the pebbles a tiny bit. Depending on how you sweep you can use this to make the rock Curl a little bit more or a little bit less. You can even increase the distance a little bit. In fact the sweeping is half the game.
Isn’t it behaving how a sphere behaves on air? If you kick a ball with a (anti)clockwise spin it’ll swing that way in its flight. No idea, but that may be somewhere to look for answers?
This fascinating sport which involves a lot of decision making and often enough comes down to the last stone bowled is maligned by some. The naysayers frankly baffle me. Even here there are trolls. And, no, it's not shuffleboard on ice anymore than chess is checkers.
@@mymusic8546 Right, but it's kind of lackluster for a NOVA video called "Curling - The Most Mysterious Olympic Sport " to not explain obvious questions about the sport in it's entirety.
they melt the ice with the brooms, which REDUCES friction. In fact, with skilled enough throwers, a game could be played with no sweepers at all. They just make it a little easier.
I hate to say it, but doesn't a bowling ball also curve in the direction of its rotation? They said that this curling stone is the only object on earth that does so. :-/
Different kinds of rotation. Tire analogy: Bowling ball is like a tire that is upright (on your car). Rotational forces align with the tread. Curling stones are like a tire on it's side (like the spare in the back of the car). If you set this tire on the ground, rotational forces are different. It's also why they used the analogy of the cup rather than a ball to show the difference in how the rotation is not the same.
The centrifugal force of a bowling ball and the like makes things bend one way as they travel and then bend back again, like a wavelength. Curling stones are unique because the ice and how much liquid there is from sweeping somehow cancels out one direction of the centrifugal pull and the force of a curling stone will only ever make it "hook". How long or wide that hook is controlled by the direction and spin made by the person throwing the stone, and also by the people sweeping. More sweeping means less resistance so it will go faster and travel more, but it will also curl less.
A rock curls because it has three speeds. If you use Vector quantities to measure these you will find that the bolt which is attached to the handle has the speed of the actual motion of the rock. Then you have the speeds of rotation, one which is moving faster than the centre bolt and one which is moving slower than the centre bolt. The faster side does not have time to grab the pebble but the slower side does. Like ABS in a vehicle the slower side relative to the centre makes more contact with the pebble and drags the rock that direction.
I totally understand and can explain the "Mystery or Secrets" of Curling but I can't figure out who to talk to about it. Also would love to explain and test a theory of the brushing that could change the sport of curling.
Dreadful presentation, completely distracting and unnecessarily dramatic music, underwhelming penetration into subject matter, immature and tabloid in tone

if you hired them you'd be slipping all over the place.
I don’t understand all the dislike people have for Curling? I think Curling is very underrated
That's new for me. Out of all sports curling isn't seen on television like majority i see. Seems cool to play given the standards. Id try it

generates heat, reducing resistance and increasing the range

At no point does it curl. It does curve though.
You answer the question of the stone, now explain why you need a 2 people with a broom sweeping the ice as it is gonna slow the stone down

There is nothing mysterious about it. The coefficient of friction between that flat rock with a handle, and the ice, is essentially zero!
