Thank you. It’s so obvious when someone actually has lots of real world experience with a bike or tire or whatever they are reviewing. On my last tour, the only puncture anybody had was my nephews Road 5! I appreciate your observations.

London roads mate. I had puncture issues with all my tyres - Pirelli diablos, Pirelli phantoms, road 4s and road 5s. If you ride every day obviously get a tyre that can cope with a bit of road crap because lorry’s cross the city carrying rubbish like loose screws, nails etc... but I wouldn’t sacrifice the control in wet or cold weather for all the tea in china.... that’s why for me the Michelin Roads are the tyre I trust to prevent me from becoming a meat crayon.

It is a very valid point, I love the Roads so much but I wish they would sort out the puncture issue. Just slightly harder and maybe, just maybe a better result for me that is.

I ride around London for business and out in the sticks down B roads and lanes for pleasure, your urban puncture is usually a screw, nail or shard of glass, out in the sticks it’s flint, razor sharp shards of flint washing on to the lanes off the fields
A buddy of mine pulled what appeared to be a Stone Age flint arrow head out of his Road 5

Disclosure - I’m a Metzler guy, always Racetec on my HP4 and past bikes. I have just worn out the Roadtec 01 on my new XR at 3,600m of mostly hard riding and am happy with all round grip and will use them again.. but how anyone is saying they get massive mileage is beyond me, so I’d say don’t count on that! The best mileage I’ve ever had from a tyre by a Country mile is the Pirelli Angel GT2’s on a previous KTM 1290GT (6000!!!! 😳) and they perform well. I did try them on an earlier XR and again big mileage but created an unnerving speed weave above 120mph so darent put them on the new one.

I've answered this question a few times, I don't ride hard and do little motorway miles so don't square off the tyres and also religiously look after the tyre presure. I also ride them right to the end of their life, not saying thst is a good thing its just what I do. I achive high millage on all my tyres bar a bad set of Bridgestones that I tore through in 4k.

I keep going back to your video, purely for the comments. The tussle between the Road 5 and the Roadtec 01's on my R1 is never-ending, but I'm encouraged to read that the Roadtecs have a sportier feel to them. I don't really want to have to adapt my riding too much after the last 3 seasons on S20 and S21s, along with a short sting on T30's. Converting my R1 out from track use to road use now, so my point of reference for sports touring tyres is lost - Last ST's I raved about were the Roadsmarts on my 929, and they're at least a decade old now! I filter loads and the quality of the roads near where I live is passable as a macadam, so puncture resistance and reliability are must for a daily.

When you say that you got few punctures with the tyre, did you mean that, when it catches a nail, it will puncture itself slowly from then on?

If you get punctures, look at where you position yourself on the road. If you ride in all the shit in the middle of the road, like when you’re filtering, you’ll get punctures. Same on the inside of the road if you’re going up the inside of the stationary traffic.

I've been using the same pair of PR5s for 2+ years. No punctures.
Used to get Pirelli Diablos for summer and use PRs for winter, but the PR5s are good enough for all year road riding.
PR4s were weird tho. Carcass was too hard and the front felt really skinny

  • @SeanieVoiceOver

My record with Road 5’s was three punctures in 3 months, it actually made me paranoid, I thought I’d pissed someone off enough to come and hammer a nail into my rear tyre once a month, a lady I know had three punctures in the same day on her Road 5 rear, there’s a theory that the soles on the front tyre flip up nails and screws to the perfect angle for the rear tyre to catch.
There’s no question that aside from this puncture magnet issue they are awesome tyres, I’ve had 3 sets, still use them after going back to Roadtec 01’s for a while BUT I think the most longevity I’ve had is about 8k miles
Roadtec 01 also a great tyre, tip ,in quicker than Michelin, my HWM versions didn’t last as long as road 5’s when the central rubber started to wear after about 7k miles
I’ve still had puncture issues on the Metzeler and other bike tyre brands but I’m certain that Road 5 attract far more nasty sharp thing at a much higher rate

It’s bizzare. Tyres seem to work better on different bikes. The roadtec 01 was a slightly upgraded tyre for wet weather. The metzler Z8 interact were the ones before the 01 and cane top in the best sports touring tyre in neevseys mcn test review, and Germany’s equivalent. Metzler were also the choice of the IOMTT for many years as they were designed to be on roads. I have never had a better tyre than the Z8. Warms up quick, longevity, instant grip and feedback. I just wonder weather the 01 doesn’t feel the same because the tread is more wet orientated compared to the Z8.

I thought it was just me. PR4, thought I had a puncture because it was leaking from a minor nick in tread, so had it patched. Still leaked. They put a bigger patch on. Still leaked. Then I noticed it leaking from several other places including the join. So I ditched the tyre for fear it was starting to delaminate. Next PR4, got a hefty cut within a few hundred miles, but not down to the cords. It leaks. Experience said check the rest of the tyre, so I smothered it with very soapy water. Hey presto, it leaks from several other locations too. Almost as if neither tyre had been sealed on the inside. I love the grip, but I won’t be buying anymore.

Quite curious how would Road 6 Gt compare to Metzelers. Got bike with Metzerler Roadtec Z8 (not sure how those compare to 01 though) tyres and were quite bad, swapped them for Road 6 GT and it was total transformation of bike.
So far I have done about 8k km (about 5k miles) on them with 0 issues. Grip all the way around since moment you sit on bike. I don't push bike at all though, and mostly commuting and relaxing ride after work.

    Hi and Thankyou for sharing...
I have a set of 01's fitted to my triumph tiger 800xrt.
They have covered 7000mls and the rear tyre (centre) is virtually finished.
My tiger has tyre pressure monitoring so I've always kept them within range. It's abit odd with these 01'S as I always seem to be adding pressure (front and rear) every couple of months. Never really had to do that with other tyres.
Anyway, you get great life from your set, can I ask what bike you ride? (For weight comparisons)
I wonder if metzeler make a harder construction rear 01 tyre (like a GT) for heavier bikes like the tiger and heavier sports tourers..
    Keep safe buddy 😉

Realy helpful review. I have had 3 sets of pr4 and have had a similar overall impression. Though only 1 puncture. You must be unlucky.
As a year round rider I love the Michelins for the all round grip. Though I agree that they fall off at higher temps. But to know there is another option that will perform as well and I can wring a few more miles out of is really helpful.

I've done 800 on them now (in Yorkshire 😉) and they undoubtedly have good grip in mixed or wet conditions but it feels like the road is made of memory foam. That's the best I can describe it! Same issue with S22 vs M9RR. S22 gets too hot on the most "fun" days, and becomes squishy. And like the Road 5's, they pick up Everything on the ground. My last set of S22 had a Lot of gravel stuck inside the tires. When they get hot, they're basically jello. M9RR is the Only tire I actually trust. I'm going to be testing the Roadtec 01 SE next. There is only one motorcycle tire (tyre): Metzeler. That is the only brand I would ride with. Great for cornering, great in wet weather, great grip, great at speed. People need to realize that before they wind up on a compilation video wiping out on a corner because of the wrong tires.

    • @A_Pt_9298
      @A_Pt_9298 3 ปีที่แล้ว

And then you buy a different style bike and you change your opinion of which brand of tyre is, what you consider, the best 🙄 yeah yeah, heard it all before. At the end of the day, like a question that was put up on a Facebook page i read recently, it read 'What pressure does your tyres need to be on a track?'... Well, as you (maybe) can guess, there was no correct answer other than, ', different strokes for different folks, simple', weather, track and air temperature spring to mind, and it all depends on what style of bike you're riding too, a sports bike is a slightly different stance to a sports tourer bike, an adventure bike, a naked bike etc.., it's not just a simple, look in the manual at what they recommend and then set them up like that, that's not the answer and you'll realise that in time when you keep doing it, knowledge is key! Granted, whatever Metzeler tyre you have on this year might be fine, but next year will it be the same on the next version? No, it won't, as you can clearly see that with the Michelin Pilot Road tyres, the 1 & 2s are a bit different design to the 3, 4 & 5s, i think it is, that's just the way technology goes unfortunately, like Windows XP compared to Windows Vista, which was phased out in a year, and now, the preferred system of choice for PCs, Windows 10...they're suited to different people, for years I'd only run Windows 98SE and then XP Pro because it was better for audio production, Windows 2000, Vista and 8 were pants because nobody could be bothered to write decent audio drivers for them... So what you've said is very naive and please nobody pay attention 🙄

Very good response, wheather has no impact here. The tyres don't last forever - up to 8-10k km. Michelins are wired to me, seem high end, feel from-very good-to-generic.
