  • Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a faulty Sony Walkman WM-EX194.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    Easiest fix I've had from eBay (true story) is someone sold 4 different Game Boys, all faulty.
    They had simply put batteries in the wrong way around.

    If the belt on any piece of equipment is slipping because its stretched ad is in otherwise good shape, boil it in water for
    5 - 10 minutes to get it back into shape again.
    I heard this trick from an old timer many years ago and it definitely works!
    Great vids bye the way!

    I have a similar model (WM-FX193) and it had a similar issue. The belt was slipped out. The video helped me a lot on how to open up the walkman, what to keep in mind when changing the belt and how to maintain the device.
    Now I can enjoy my old cassettes again :).
    Thanks a lot for doing these repairs!

    Don't do quick versions any more. We enjoy you figuring things out. It helps me in my process of trouble shooting. I disassembled an electric started for a snow blower yesterday. Like you, I had to talk my way through the process. I was able to disassemble, remove the rust and clean the starter shaft so the gear would work properly. All in all it saved me over a hundred dollars to replace the starter.

    Hi Vince. I ran a company called Teletape in London. Sony found out that grease was prone to hardening and as time went on they started making plastic gears out of a type of plastic that they told me was self lubricating I don't know if they put something like PTFE in it which might count for it not gluing but in general grease became a no no apart for light oil in motor bearings. I am enjoying your videos. Many thanks, it's nice to see young people taking an interest in technology from my era.

    Using a wider rectangular belt can cause unnecessary friction against the sides of the pulley which can cause the belt to stretch and then slip. If you continue to do repairs like this, you might want to look into buying oring cord in small diameters. You can cut it to length with diagonal cuts at both ends, and then bond the ends together with a tiny bit of superglue.
    I use this method for repairing belts for turntables, tape players and other things that you can't get original belts for.
    The round profile fits easily into pulley grooves, and doesn't create other than normal friction against the pulley sides.

    I got a WM-EX190 off Ebay practically given away as not working in pretty good aesthetical condition as a hobby fix. It was just a case of clean off residue from a leaky battery that didn't cause any real damage, and change the belt, and the walkman works great now.
    Sometimes you can find these "quick" fix jobs that are good to do just for the fun of it. I ordered the proper size belt for it rather than going with a cheap assortment bag, so that put up the price of the repair a little, but I emjoy3d spending the time bringing back to life a walkman that woild otherwise be thrown out as not worth fixing as it's so low end.

    Whenever you replace the belt in any tape mechanism, always make sure it is not twisted to ensure the maximum smooth operation. Those mechanisms are most common Sony Walkman ones so if you know them well you can fix almost any tape Walkman.

      I remember the quality went right down the tubes on those as time went on. I bought one a few years after they came out and used it all the time. It was probably the best unit ever. Top quality for sure. After I broke it on accident I got a replacement and that one was garbage. In just a few years they went from top grade to trash.

    Fourth!!! =D Great job! Regards that head - try a bit of plastx on it! That might help get that mark off the top part of it? Smaller gear = more speed, larger gear will rotate slower! Having said that - it depends on which way around you look at it. A small gear connected to a small gear of samesize = 1 to 1. But if you connected that small gear to a large gear, the large gear rotates a lot slower as it has more teeth.

    • @ray73864
      @ray73864 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was going to mention this. Looking at it, it looks like for playing, the gears are the same size, so 1:1, which means the motor speed is at normal for playing, the big gear and little gear means that the motor gets sped up (possibly by a speed of 4:1) for fast forwarding and rewinding, compared to what Vince thought where the motor gets slowed down for playing and is at normal speed for FF/RW.

  • @JosephX
    @JosephX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Plus, I think that the white gear that moves up and down, not only changes the speed, but changes the direction, because the fast forward and rewind turn in opposite directions but the motor still moves in the same direction. Also, I think that gear is the reason that the pegs that make the tape move though the cassette (forget there name) engage and disengage, fast forward and play use the right peg and rewind uses the left peg. Hope this info helps

    Just a few days ago I attempted to fix a Panasonic shockwave RQ-SW20. It had a broken belt and took me a while to replace and when i did replace it there was finally sound after more than 5 years of it being broken. But the sound was slow and distorted. I spent a total of about 7 hours with little progress and then i got stuck, I gave up. Needs new belt, I think the reader might not be good. No info on it either do it makes it a lot more difficult for me to work on.

      Didn’t try to clean the reader so I’ll check soon. It belongs to my mom and she was going to throw it out since it didn’t work, only the radio and it’s been with her for years and it’s memories so I rather have it fixed so she can still hold on to it. I can’t find another belt for it though, I had to use a tape recorder belt to get it to work.

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The belts always turned out to be the problem with those. The hardest part is finding a proper belt that works. I see some places sell you a bag of mixed size belts so you can sort through them and find one that might work. It's too bad someone couldnt have invented a system that replaced the bloody belt system. It was always the issue with those and the cheaper record players.

    These models are very tricky to work on and the older ones are even trickier. If you don't know what your doing I would suggest you leave it to a professional. The cost would be about the price of a serviced Walkman on eBay. It might be even better to buy one of the serviced units from a reputable educated seller. I have repaired hundreds of these. It took me a long time and a lot of patience to fix these when I started many years ago.
