People Judge You by These 2 Things - How to make better first impressions at work |

  • To succeed in business, is it more important to be competent or to be warm?
In business, people tend to predominantly focus on conveying their value & trustworthiness through their competence.
It’s based on the idea that if you’re perceived as being very good at what you do, then you’re trusted and accepted.
However, when it comes to being trusted, Harvard researchers learned that your competence is second in priority to your warmth.
This is because the first and most important criteria on which people base their judgements of trust, are qualities of sincerity, approachability and being genuine.
While competence is more quantifiable for companies, the ability to demonstrate warmth through values, a service-oriented culture and social corporate responsibility is what facilitates trust from a human-centric perspective.
And fundamentally, isn’t business is all about people?
(Since posting to this short video to TikTok 2 months ago, it’s amassed 1.9M views, so clearly it’s something people find intriguing).
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
How can you leverage the quality of warmth to help you at work?

Doesn't matter the nich, warmth appeals, secretly or not, to everyone. And competence is the respect in others opinion, is credibility you give someone. The funny thing is: you'll never trully know someone's competence if you're not competent yourself. So this "competence" is mainly appearence, acting confidently about what you say, but if you're not, this will eventually show...I mean, if you're competent enough to notice.

People will value you based on those two factors, agreed but sometimes warmth doesn’t help. The more warmth you are the more down they look on you.
As long as you are smart and a person who seeks success, you will always face difficulties caused by others. Automatically people are triggered to hinder your success no matter what.
Best things to do is to understand the negativities around you first then choose to implement or not to a fake warmth and move on. Bad people like to be treated nicely while they look down on you. Look them at the same level with a big smile, warmth but don’t over please them.

But when one wants to be warm, in most cases one is, or will be taken advantage of due to whatever reason financial demographics etc. In the end, as an mid aged adult, I guess I could say staying open minded but nonetheless, keep a threshold (when it comes intimacy, friendship, or courtship), is the best route..

Instead of saying "from an evolutionary perspective", try saying "from a design perspective". It's really not very reasonable to believe (regardless of what you've been taught) that a finely tuned universe just popped into being out of nothing and that the complex information codes required to sequence even the simplest proteins just happened through chance collisions of atoms. If humans prioritize warmth over competence, it's because we've been designed by a loving and ingenious creator.

I agree with warmth over confidence. It can seem untrustwothy or even like a know it all. I've done it before

    Dear Ms. Zahrai n team,
First congrats on making such precise and awesome videos. Really useful. Thank you.
Here I would differ with you on context of Peter Principle as competency is relative. An extremely competent and self assured person will prefer to have same qualities in her surroundings. And the reverse for a person with self doubts. Thus, same person maybe judged differently by different set of individuals.
I hope we can agree to disagree. Continue the good work.
