  • A fun yet educational video! I decided to make this video to help new fancy chicken owners know to keep a close watch on their birds. Long and/or fluffy head feathers can greatly reduce vision and can lead to problems. Outside of the birds not being able to spot predators or danger, other problems can arise. Banding or trimming the feathers around the eyes can make a world of difference in the health and happiness of your birds.
Steve is a Polish Chicken who is 5 months old. His head feathers have begun to grow crazy long and he was starting to be unable to see. This was causing him to sleep a lot and get lost from the flock. No worries! Thankfully this was corrected before it went on for long.
Watch as a tiny rubber band changes Steve's life!

Of course you have a chicken with a ponytail. So on brand! Question though: would people normally trim them down (for ease of life I guess)? Like you don't keep an AH in full coat, can you do the same with birds?

You can absolutely trim them down. Several of my hens have been trimmed. If you are going to show them you want to keep them full.
